Manny's has always been on my list, but this morning I was actually heading to Lou Mitchell's. I got there, saw the line, and immediately decided I didn't have that kind of patience in me . So I changed plans, headed over to Manny's, and somehow the place I wasn't even planning on visiting ended up being exactly where I was supposed to be. I walked in having absolutely no idea what I was doing, and there was a woman standing there looking just as confused as I was. She looked at me and said, "This is my first time." I laughed and said, "Mine too. Let's do it together." And just like that, we were off. I decided I wanted breakfast, so one of the guys pointed me back toward the first counter and told me, "He'll take care of your breakfast. If you want anything else, come back and see me." Perfect. I ordered scrambled eggs with corned beef hash, hash browns and toast, then worked my way down to the hot bar where I added some macaroni and cheese and a knish. And THAT was the move. Everything was really good, but the mac and cheese and the knish were the stars of the entire meal. Manny's is famous for the gigantic deli sandwiches, but after today, I'm convinced the real adventure is working your way through that hot bar. The sides are where it's at. While I was waiting in line, one of the guys behind the counter noticed my Dave Matthews Band shirt and started talking music with me. He told me he liked Dave and that he was a huge Phil Collins fan. I told him I'm a Phil Collins guy too, and we ended up having this completely random, genuine little conversation about music in the middle of a busy Chicago deli. Before I left, I told him I was glad he shared that with me and hoped he had a great day. We laughed, said goodbye, and went about our lives. And honestly, that little interaction was almost as good as the food. That's what I loved about Manny's. It didn't feel polished or manufactured. It felt like Chicago. Great food. People actually talking to each other. A little confusion when you first walk in. A stranger becoming your temporary partner because neither of you knows what the hell you're doing. A random conversation about Dave Matthews and Phil Collins. And somehow, by the time you leave, you feel like you were part of the place for an hour. I went looking for Lou Mitchell's today. Instead, I accidentally found Manny's. And I'm really glad I did. Manny's, I'll be back. Next time, though, I know exactly what I'm doing.

With a recommendation like that, I was ready to try anything. Parking can be a challenge in Chicago, but they had a lot in the rear of the restaurant, which was nearly empty. I strolled around to the front and walked in. I wasn't ready for it to be a cafeteria-style eatery, but it really didn't matter. The ambience was kind of cute. Lots of black and white tiles for a retro feel and some historical pictures of the founder. I ordered the 1/2 sandwich and cup of soup lunch special. Matzah ball was my choice of soup and my half sandwich looked huge. I was ready. I tasted the soup first. The broth was clear, and the matzah ball was large. I like hard matzah balls and soft, so it didn't matter to me which it was. What surprised me was the lack of chicken soup flavor. The matzah ball was spongy and not particularly tasty. On to the sandwich. The first thing I noticed was that the carver didn't pull a chunk out of a steam cabinet. They had a slicing machine running constantly forming a mound from which the carver grabbed a handful of corned beef, then a handful of pastrami, which had already been sliced and griddled to add to the corned beef. I asked about the smallest size side of chopped liver they could offer and he gave me a tiny chilled dose sized cup of liver pulled out of the fridge. So far I wasn't impressed. The chopped liver tasted very good but it was hand chopped and in large pieces with very little schmaltz. The sandwhich wasn't anything special. Not hot, not piled and the pickle was a kosher dill, not a half sour. I left half of my half sandwich, the pickle (except for the one bite), and even some chopped liver. For the cost of this average lunch , I would have rather eaten at my favorite deli in Atlanta and had tongue which wasn't even on the menu at Manny's.

Then wiped his fingers on a dirty rag and proceeded to finish making the bowls. A short time later, we were served that same bowl of ramen. Watching an employee use their bare hands and mouth on food that was then served to a customer was extremely concerning and completely unacceptable from a food safety and hygiene standpoint. It ruined the experience and made us lose confidence in the restaurant's food handling practices. I hope management takes this seriously, retrains their staff on proper food safety procedures, and ensures this doesn't happen to anyone else.

VERY GOOD! I am happy to find a delicious Shawarma restaurant that is open 24/7! HELLO! Between three very hungry people we DEMOLISHED the Large hummus, which was served with PLENTY of pita bread. It was very good. Tasty, good consistency, perfectly seasoned, topped with tomato, cucumbers, parsley, and seasoning, with a pool of oil in the middle. yum! We split an order of falafel (6)... which was also very good! Fried to crispy perfection! We all ordered the same Beef Shawarma sandwich. Very big and very filling, a good deal for the cost. It came in a large, albeit thin pita wrap... STUFFED with nice chunky Shawarma meat, cucumber, lettuce, and tomato. The tahini sauce is good too but you have to put it on yourself, and apply after each bite. =) My friends enjoyed the spicy hot red sauce that they had to "borrow" from the table next to us.... All in all very good. I am happy we found this place. Very Authentic Middle Eastern! The three of us ate for around $30 and we were STUFFED! You know it's good when cops and taxi drivers are chowing there! Shawarma Inn has a new location on Devon Avenue in Park Ridge. I never tasted mideastern food before, and was very pleased with this restaurant. The food is deliciously seasoned, generously portioned, fresh. The restaurant itself is a large, comfortable sit down place with table service, upholstered seating, very clean - not a plastic tray food court type. The waitstaff is pleasant and efficient and helpful if you don't know the menu. This is on my "regular/favorites" list from now on. Parking is not a problem. It is located in the South Park shopping area (which is only a few minutes from the Kennedy) , a great neighborhood with many other restaurants and shops-safe and inviting day or night. AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE! I am middle eastern and know authentic food when i see it. After years of living in germany even, you get used to the Donner Kabobs. You come to the states and its all fake gyro meat. So we saw this rack of real looking beef spinning on the pit. Little did we know that it was little bits of meet marinated in some kind of pungent paint thinner. We barely touched the shawarmas, and did not want to be rude so we took everything to go. Our mission to eat some delicous kabobs turned quickly to finding the closest dumpster to get rid of this toxic doggy bag. The true victim here is the homeless man who thinks they are coming across a free meal , instead finding later their bowels are in for a bumpy ride, only a war torn third world country can offer. read more

I had been to this place more than 5 times. I love the food they make. Them being open very late night is totally a bonus. Who wouldn't want a late night shawarma sandwich right? The reason i gave three starts is first, some of their staff is really aggressive towards customers. Second reason is a recent political post on their window. No businesses should be showing any political signs. They didn't only missed a star for that, they also missed a regular customer. After all, their food is good. Glad there are several allternatives to good middle eastern foods near this dump. They must also personnaly know an inspector because the place is filty and should be shut down. truley an outrageously sickening place. i took my wife there after weeks of complaining that she did not want to cook. (THAT WILL BE THE LAST TIME SHE COMPLAINS) because we both got food poisoning!!!! i called off of work the next day and my wife and i took turns running in and out of the bathroom with diahrea and throwing up. i will NEVER try that shwarma in place again i still get sickend and disgusted thinking about that food. read more

PLEASE BE SAFE !!!! This is one of the worst restaurants in Chicago. The owner sexually harasses women who go there by themselves. Right before sitting on a table the owner stared winking at me and giving me dirty smilies. I confronted him immediately in front of two cops. Which is hard to achieve since there are a slew of resteraunts on Lawrence and kedzie. Anyhow give it a try. Best place in Lincoln Square to get Middle Eastern food. There open 24hrs so you can go anytime when your craving something to eat. Prices are fair and they give you big servings. The best, that's all I have to say. My only problem with it is sometimes the food is hit or miss depending to the cook but it is never bad. Its also cold inside and lacking in decor but all that aside it is one of my favorite spots for a late night bite. Awesome place, a must try!! read more

We each drank a can of "Healthy Cola" - zero sugar and zero calorie beverages out of Saudi Arabia. My lemon mint was AOK, and I presume my bud was fine with his cola, as he prefers a diet cola anyway. I was facing outward towards the street view, so I could not tell if there was just a one-man gang working at the restaurant. We asked one time for a take-out box, but we had to ask the server three separate times for the check, and finally we were asked to come up to the register to pay for our meal.

They still sell bananas and local Middle Eastern cookies from Chicago bakeries for desesrt. The menu might have changed slightly, but fans of Pita X-Press will probably find their favorites. We ordered a vegetarian platter, which had baba ghanouj, hummus, two kinds of cucumber salad, four falafels, and a generous, freshly warmed pita. It was enough food for a light lunch for two. We enjoyed watching the cars pass under the Belvidere Oasis as we ate our food. So glad that this business is back.

I normally get the dinner special for $11.99, it comes with an egg roll and shrimp fried rice. I ordered the shrimp egg foo young dinner (2 patties the lunch special only has one patty) and the Mongolian Beef dinner. The egg foo young is loaded with shrimp and it's fluffy with a really good gravy. The Mongolian Beef is packed full of vegetables and tender beef. It wasn't spicy to me. Next time I have to tell them to make it extra spicy. The only downside to me is the cost of extra green onion at 3.50. Ouch!! They give you the standard soy sauce and sweet and sour, any additional packets are .10. Not bad. Overall decent food at a decent price.
