On our way out of town we stopped at Schat's for coffee and breakfast treats. The store is nicely decorated and has a selection of breads, truffles, sweet treats, desserts, and donuts. Our family ordered four donuts that were a hit with each person. The coffee was very hot and good. The line moved quickly and the staff was friendly. There's a room adjacent to the bakery where you can sit and enjoy your meal. I'd highly recommend! read more

Breads and pastry! What more could you want! Great selections of breads, from packaged sourdough and local honey to fresh baked claws and donuts. Dough is light and fluffy and not at all greasy, fillings can be on the sweeter side (i mean, it's a donut of course) but it's very well balanced. One thing i noticed, their fresh baked good did not have a price tag and i had to constantly ask how much an item is, and workers had to ask each other for clarity. Good thing the bread was good because that was worth nothing. Note for Covid: social distancing is enforced. Only a certain number of people are allowed inside the place, even if it's huge enough. If you see a big line outside the doors, don't be discouraged. That's just because they can be inside. read more

Always love stopping here every time I am in Mammoth! Their OJ is SO good, as well as pretty much every single baked good. I was so so sad to have had a negative experience with the sandwich side though - both my fiancé and I got sandwiches and shared the clam chowder and both of us got terribly sick after. We put the schat in schats. Going down it sure was tasty though! The only thing I would say though is that the bread for both of our sandwiches were pretty thin and the Sammy was falling apart by the end. Overall I will definitely still go back to the bakery end but I don't think I can trust the sandwich side. read more

We got a dozen donuts and some other sweet treats here, and everything was really good. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the variety of goodies on display all looked really tempting, with some really creative decorations. Went this morning on my way out of town. This is the second worst cup of coffee I've had. Most acidic espresso I've tasted, almost to the point where it tastes like they squeezed a whole lime into it. Plus it's a very strange color for just being 4 shots over ice, and nothing else added. Wow doesn't like fresh pastries, fresh bread and sweets. On my way home from camping with the bears I stopped for some treats. The fresh ciabatta bread bread with the chili chipotle grilling oil was a perfect dipping sauce for the bread and I look forward to trying it on the grill/kitchen. The bakery is filled with delectable treats for all taste buds. No matter your desire they have it all even a caffeine jolt for the drivers. On one said is all the fresh baked goods and on the other is where a fresh samie can be bought. I recommend coming when you have some time as popular as this establishment is there is always a line. Save yourself the headache. The line is so long and it's because the service is so slow. I got a sandwich with their signature shepherds bread and it was so dried out that it was cracking. The costumer behind me asked for fresh bread and they laughed at her but now I realize how smart of a request that was. There were two blonde ladies that we were making sandwiches with one Hispanic lady. There were about 8 people in line and the two blonde ladies just left her to deal with the crowd. They give you a soggy pickle and a stale cookie. This place is a well known bakery and you get stale, cracking bread on a $20 sandwich with staff that just walks away. The Schat's Bakery is a good spot to grab some breakfast while you're in Mammoth. We drove by this restaurant several times during our stay. The Bakery is just so cute that I couldn't wait to visit. We ended up coming here as we were heading out of town. We picked out several pastries and took them to go, and everything was fresh and delicious. Service was helpful but not necessarily friendly. We arrived in Mammoth lakes and were hungry. My husband recommended sharing a sandwich, I remembered Schatts bakery in Mammoth mid 80s best locals breakfast and I could choose their famous family recipe Volkeran bread. We shared a turkey sandwich on sourdough bread. The turkey was freshly roasted whole and when they made the sandwich there was plenty of white or dark meat. Though this place is pretty legendary you will find the food to look a lot better than it tastes. Doughnuts are mediocre on par with any neighborhood shop. This place is alright. Not sure what the hype is all about but it is a decent bakery in Mammoth where there are not many other choices. Just being honest. When I went it was very disorganized, people just lining up wherever to order food. Good spot to stop for breakfast - lots of pastry options and small section of breakfast pre made sandwiches. They have a heated display of sausage/ham/bacon egg and cheese croissants which were actually very tasty and lots of donuts, homemade breads and pastries. This is my first time to the Mammoth location. It feels more spacious than the one in Bishop but it lacks the coziness and charm the other location has. We came for the pull-away bread and anything else that looked interesting. They were down to just 6 loaves, so the bread section was looking a bit cleaned out. The ladies at the register offered tons and tons of samples of cookies and even a churro. Watch out vegans, nothing here for you except water. The service here is super friendly, shop is clean & cute but I was feeling a bit disappointed with the uncozy vibe. It's still worth a stop in! Moldy Bread Disgusting..... Poor Customer Service, as I am placed on hold waiting to speak to the manager about the moldy bread that I got from this place. It's been over 20 mins on hold, I always like to give the establishment a chance you correct their mistake before posting a negative review. We dropped $100 at this place on lunch and bakery items, the sandwiches were almost to the standards of the Bishop location, but due to COVID, we did want to wait a hour in line, so we settled for the Mammoth location prior to leaving town. The meats in the sandwiches were kinda on the light side for a $14 sandwich. The pastrami was good, but the roast beef had about a 1/4" of meat, really disappointing. Their jalapeno cheesey bread was off a little as well, I think their quality control is off at this place. No PRICES on any bakery items, WTH. Who does that?????? I know why,,, they are charging $6 for an Apple Turnover, that's Berverly Hills french pastry chef pricing, Come On Man... Had I seen the price, I would have not gotten that. Finally, upon coming home, we took the Ciabatta bread out of the bag and found black and green molds on the bottom. Totally Disgusting! Want to speak with management about this, but, been on hold since writing this review and no one has answered, I tried, but had you had better customer service, you would have not been a subject of this review. Unfortunately seems like it's the only bakery in the entire Mammoth area. Went to get an assortment of their pastries , so tried a little bit of everything. In all honesty, every single thing - cheesecakes, fruit tarts , chocolate cake, croissants were all mediocre and incredibly average in taste. The actual reason for 2 stars though is that every single item we bought on average was around $10!! for a single piece of cake . Our total made out to be $87!!! for literally 8 items that we purchased and it didn't even taste that good! It quite literally tatses like any basic cake you can get at Vons over there , only you are not going to break a bank at Vons by being overcharged. Came here for a quick bite before heading back home and because a friend wanted to buy their bread. I ordered the sausage croissant sandwich and the hot chocolate with coffee. The croissants are pre made and sit under a hot light go stay warm. The croissant with pretty tasty. The eggs were fluffy and the croissant crumbled to the touch. The hot chocolate with coffee was soothing and didn't give you the wired feeling that coffee typically gives you. HOLY COW! This place is amazing.... I came with my family and we all enjoyed the sandwiches we custom made at the deli counter. We all agreed that the sourdough bread was the best we have ever had and purchased multiple loaves before leaving. Don't even get me started on the baked goods section... the Apple fritter is hands down one of the best pastries I've ever had! The cookies are crunchy rather than soft but so delicious and flavorful. We also tried some of the chocolates- the German chocolate and the coconut clusters. Holy moly! I can't say enough good things about this place. Oh- also let me mention- it's reasonably priced. We couldn't believe how many pastries we got to try for $15. Health safety alert! Came here for to grab a couple of pastries before heading out of mammoth. Went to use the bathroom to find both bathrooms out of soap, with no replacement to be found. We notified the staff (whom had actually just come out of the bathroom), who reported that they can't replace it because the one guy who knows how hadn't come to work yet that day. This means that employees (including this girl) are using the bathroom and NOT WASHING THEIR HANDS before handling the food. When we pointed out that this is a disgusting health and food safety violation the girl said she "didn't know" what to do.
