Cravings satisfied. If you're craving a Taiwanese chicken, this place will do the job. Honestly bang for your buck! For $12, you can get the XXL fried chicken cut up in half or pieces. The chicken was moist and well seasoned. I got the mild but honestly I could do another spice level up. Make sure to eat it right away while it's hot and fresh. Service was ok. After frequenting two of their mall locations in cupertino and milpitas in recent years and I have come to a conclusion that I affirmatively prefer the milpitas location. Reasons are below: 1. Fast, efficient and friendly service. 2. Generous portions and fresh food. The Cupertino location in valley fair always has a long line with haphazard order calling and inefficient handling time and sometimes an attitude due to busyness. Once I got a dirty used napkin in my order. Gross! As for food, batter's super thick and greasy, it was mid at its best. Milpitas location has the best popcorn chicken, hot, tender and well seasoned. The hot grass jelly dessert is on the sweet side, will find out if I can have it reduced on sugar level next time. I've been wanting to try this place for a while and finally got the opportunity to grab a few snacks! Both the fried oyster mushrooms and sweet potato fries were very crispy and thick-cut. I do wish the sweet potato fries had a bit more plum flavor on it (I even got extra plum powder) like this place I used to go to back in SGV (IYKYK), but it was still yummy--slightly sweet and so savory. The oyster mushrooms were not greasy, which can happen when it's fried incorrectly or if the batter is not good--but this wasn't the case. It did take longer than I thought to get, but it looked like there was just 1 or 2 fryers, 1 employee, and everyone was ordering something fried. I'll definitely be back to try the o-a jian and o-a mi sua when I'm hungrier! read more

Tried the popcorn chicken and the XXL chicken breast and it was more than enough food for two people. The portions are huge and definitely worth it. The seasoning was really good and everything tasted super fresh. You can tell they make it to order, which makes a big difference in the flavor and texture. Honestly one of my fav popcorn chicken spots now!! You totally get your money worth here compared to other places. The chicken is consistently juicy and always fresh/hot!! I've been a big fan of Shilin since my college days back in Berkeley, so whenever I'm in the Milpitas area, I'm for sure dropping by! Best chicken cutlets I've ever had -- crispy and juicy too. I also love that you can adjust the spice as well. Even with the increase in prices, I'll still buy and crave it. I think this might be the original Shihlin that opened in the Bay Area or maybe the South Bay. I'm not too sure... But it was my first introduction to Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks. Located in Milpitas Square it's a typical storefront in the plaza. What sets it apart is the diminutive size of the venue and the lack of seating. The inside has a small bar are with two or three stools and there is a picnic bench and a couple of tables in the ally outside. Most of the orders are to go. Taiwan Street Eats: ~ Popcorn Chicken 鹽酥雞 - 5/5 My favourite item here and my go to spot fro Popcorn Chicken. Initially, I thought it was pricier than other spots that serve Popcorn Chicken. However you get a lot, I mean enough for a meal! The Popcorn Chicken here is perfect. Juicy and tender on the inside while Crispy and flavorful on the outside, fried to perfection! ~ Popcorn Chicken Rice Box 鹽酥雞飯 - 4/5 The Popcorn Chicken meal wasn't as good as I was hoping. There is a lack of consistency. Sometimes the veggies were a bit under cooked, while everything else was brilliant. Good size meal. ~ JiaYi Chicken Rice 嘉義雞肉飯 - 3/5 The Shredded chicken is OK. It doesn't stand out for me. I got this once, and never tried it again. Stick with the fried Chicken. ~ Treasure Rice Box 招牌便當 - 3.5/5 Good size meal. While the Chicken was cooked to perfection, I got some The under cooked veggies with this one as well... ~ XXL Chicken Thigh 雞腿肉 - 4.5/5 Juicy chicken thighs fried to perfection with a good amount of seasoning. Good size portions, you definitely get an XXL. ~ Oyster Mee Sua 蚵仔麵線 - 4/5 Eat this while its hot or at least warm. I most definitely don't recommend eating this when cool or room temperature. Its tasty, but a bit on the salty side. I'm not sure what the base of the soup is made off...I think its Soy Sauce based. Shihlin took me back to the night markets of Taiwan. Loved the food and ambiance of this spot! The flavor was there for the cutlet and the chicken was super juicy. And the Oyster Mee Sua was good too but the taste differed from what I remember from Shilin/RaoHe/other night markets in Taiwan, still good but slightly different which could just be a taste that suits the US better! I always get the XXL chicken thigh and the portion sizes are huge, which I love. I think one is enough for 2-3 people. The chicken isn't dry, it's fried to perfection. A quick snack fix when craving for some fried chicken. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and there was no line. It took about 10 minutes to get my order. I loved the chicken thigh. The chicken was moist and it's best had when hot and fresh. I went for extra spicy and extra seasonings and it was flavorful. Also, tried the popcorn chicken but went for extra spicy and default seasoning. I would order it with extra seasoning next time as that adds a lot of flavor. The extra spicy wasn't spicy for me but I enjoy having spicy food in general so order accordingly. As much as I liked the food, unfortunately I did not enjoy their boba drink. The brown sugar milk tea did not have enough tea flavor in it. It tasted more of milk and sugar with ice. I would definitely visit them for their fried chicken options but wouldn't order their drinks next time. read more

And for $13, it is a snack to be shared on a meal. The oyster omelet was yummy. A light egg omelet with lumps of oysters that was a treat to have. read more

I was craving pop corn chicken but I know there are a few minutes wait so I decided to to order ahead. And i ordered the treasure box. Chicken fillet along with rice, braised tofu, egg and pickled vegetables. So good! Huge portion. I have never had chicken breast that moist and tender. You can adjust the spice level too. I had leftovers for the next day. It was healthy and freshly made. Prices are reasonable. The lady in front is pleasant. I see a line everytime I'm near here and finally decided to come see what it's all about. The popcorn chicken here aren't popcorn sized for sure. They're huge! It takes about 2-4 bites for one popcorn chicken. This is the most juicy and flavorful popcorn chicken I've ever had and the spicy powder makes it so much better. Since there was a line I had to wait about 15 minutes for my order. I really enjoyed the popcorn chicken but definitely felt a little queasy from the grease by the last one in the bag. read more

First time here and the online order was down. I was curious enough to drive here to order. The place is surprisingly small with no place to sit inside, luckily it was next to an alley where limited outdoor seating is available. There's only a grandma lady manning the store when I was there. She speaks Chinese and was very friendly. I tried the oyster noodle soup, a braised chicken ground meat over rice and broccoli and carrot as a side. Everything is precooked, so just 5 minutes she was able to assemble and has the order ready. I also saw her making the yam fries with plum powder, the portion looks big. My food tasted ok, nothing wows though. There are 6 oysters in the noodle but I have to say they look bigger in pictures. I do recommend the broccoli and carrots side, for $2, the broccoli is fresh and the taste is refreshing, good value for the portions. I am not into fried food and most of the menu items are fried. The only other item I haven't tried is the Jiayi chicken, but not feeling the urgency to try it. read more

Yes for sure. But right now there is chicken supply storage, and we often don’t get the breast meat from local vendors or its price ($3.55/lbs) is 3x than before. Hope the chicken supply issue will be resolved in the next few months.

It is ground chicken. We only sell chicken from our stores and we grind the fresh chicken in house to make those ground meat. Thanks.

They also packed away the left overs in a heat sealed container so it wouldn't spill in the car and keeps for a while in your fridge. The street food scene in America has been a booming success in recent years, but little do we know, it's been quite a fixation in Taiwan for a while now. Here at Shihlin, you're transported to a quick taste of authentic flavors, creative small bites, and traditional cooking methods of Taiwanese street food cuisine. Upon entering, I was happily greeted and explained all the popular options on the menu. My order: XXL Crispy Chicken - Their most popular option and I can see why. Crisped to absolute perfection with soft, juicy chicken within. They generously season their crust with a unique pepper salt which I looooove. I can see why this is one of their more famous selections. Sweet Plum Potato Fries - Now this is a favorite of mine. Not your average sweet potato fry, but these have a slightly sweet, hint of sour, and crispy crust. I'm a girl that usually needs a dipping sauce with fries, but these were already perfectly flavored. Really unique and delicious! Smoked Plum Juice - Refreshing and delightful for anyone who enjoys a bit of that mouth puckering flavor. Not too sweet and more tangy than anything; it reminds me of the dried plum treats from the Asian markets that I enjoy so much. Really good! Hot Grass Jelly with Beans - They had a little crock pot apparatus sitting at the counter with a small sign; fresh homemade grass jelly?! Oh totally! What made it interesting and really tasty was that they added cooked beans and allowed for the grass jelly to slow cook to a deliciously warm temperature. Very mellow, not too sweet, and beautifully done. Friendly service and very accommodating. You also have an option of your choice of drink for only $2 every time you spend $10. Shihlin has officially ruined us for fried chicken because now we can't seem to go anywhere else to get our fix. Despite the fact that the shop is small and that the parking lot is a complete nightmare, Shihlin is insanely popular, especially during peak hours. Their menu is simple, but with plenty of variety to choose from like their famous fried chicken, soups, drinks, and rice boxes. If you're looking for a snack, albeit a heavy snack, their XXL chicken is bomb. The chicken itself is incredibly tender, but it's the crispy crust that will have you salivating. For something a bit more convenient, but just as tasty, the popcorn chicken will do you right. The rice boxes at Shihlin are also a steal. I've tried the popcorn chicken rice box that not only comes with a huge portion of juicy, crispy chicken bites, but also a huge mound of rice with minced meat, a half boiled egg, vegetables, and braised tofu. I absolutely love the crispy pieces of basil that adds both an aromatic effect as well as texture. Shihlin isn't a conventional restaurant in terms of size and the style of food it serves. Most people come in for a snack, but after smelling all of that delicious fried chicken, people tend to order more than they can finish. Great place to get some yummy Taiwanese night market snacks! I have visited Taiwan before and loved the night market snacks so thought I would try this place out. I ordered the XXL Crispy Chicken Thigh which was super juicy with a crispy flavorful crust on the outside. It is also a very large portion so you get a lot for what you pay for! You can also choose how spicy you want your chicken to be. The Sweet Plum Potato Fries were also absolutely delicious. It looks like they hand-cut the sweet potatoes because they are thicker than most places. I got the sweet potato plum fries, handmade oyster mee sua, and grandma's braised meat rice. The sweet potato plum fries were definitely my favorite - they were cut in pretty thick strips and were flavorful since the plum powder was spread evenly, something that a lot of stores fail to do! The mee sua was also amazing, and it seriously reminded me of Taiwan. The only downside is that it's more of a take-out place, so the area is small, there isn't much seating, and there was a line every time I've went which basically fills up the entire store. Haven't seen many good Taiwanese restaurants in the Bay recently that serves snacks like this one, so I'm super glad that I found this place! read more
