Just had another great evening at Shiki. I like the improvements in lighting and sound and decor. Also love the new menus and new creative rolls. Definitely my favorite of all sushi restaurants in Charleston. It's a plus to be slightly off the beaten path of King street. But the quality and care of the food and service is so much better than O-Ku, Fuji, which I think has the best atmosphere, given its rooftop bar and seating, and Osaka, in West Ashley (my second favorite for food). If food is your primary objective, go to Shiki. If younger, louder is what you seek, consider Fuji or O-ku. For me it's the food and the family run care that trumps all. I honestly was a huge fan of this place because I did think they had some quality fish. However, the poor customer service greatly outweighs the decent quality sushi. My experience: I called and asked to place a take out order. After telling the girl my entire order, she asks for a debit/credit card. I completely understand that. Unfortunately, I did not have my wallet at the moment. I drove home and by the time I got home and had my wallet, I just didn't feel like going out for food. I then receive 5 (FIVE) phone calls from thus establishment. I answer 3/5 and tell them repeatedly that I no longer wanted to place the order and to please cancel. Flash forward 2 weeks later and I call to place a take out order. I am then told that they "have caller ID, we know who this is and you are no longer allowed to order from here". All because I never called back with a card number...... Naive staff clearly didn't realize I then ordered through Uber eats. Was afraid to call for a modification after I ordered cause who knows what they would do it my food - spit in it?! Truly an embarrassing excuse of food and bev in Charleston. The sushi here is absolutely delicious and fresh. We walked in for dinner and were seated promptly at the bar. They offer unique rolls like ones with cut Korean pear. We had a roll with Korean pear and shrimp on top; the sweetness of both were very complementary and I've never had anything like it. My partner tried the pork katsu and it was accompanied on a sizzle plate with tasty charred cabbage. Wonderful surprise to eat such quality and refined sushi in Charleston! When most people think of sushi, they think of the "Americanized" version, but Shki offers true Japanese-style sashimi and nigiri, with large, fresh cuts of fish and perfectly cooked rice. A few minutes later the music was turned off and some of the lights went off for a second, then back on again, which I could only assume was our cue to leave. After 15-20 awkward minutes of silence, the music returned at a slightly-too-loud volume. Patrons were looking around, commenting on the oddness of this. You've been doing so well, Shiki. Best sushi I have had in Charleston. This place may be small and not as well known as other sushi places, but this place is THE BEST when it comes to sushi. The atmosphere is laid back, so don't feel the need to dress up fancy if you don't want to, but it is still nice enough to take a date. First off, the sushi is MOSTLY FISH AND FILLINGS AND NOT A BUNCH OF RICE! Our server was Ani and was very helpful with how to order. you basically fill out the card with what you want and turn it in. The ingredients are all super fresh and the staff have all spend time in Japan learning how to do sushi properly. The presentation is amazing and the taste was equally awesome. I got the futomaki which was a lovely balance of sweet and salty with the sweet egg and kani balanced by the pickled veggies. My friends got a variety of sushi/ shashimi and it was all good. **MUST TRY** (Jellyfish, baby octopus, sweet shrimp, and O-toro)(also heard the conch was great). The mackerel and yellowfin were buttery (not pungent, like places that keep their fish too long). The owner was kind and talkative when behind the sushi counter (we spoke about everything from punk music to where he learned his well honed knife skills). I hadn't been to Shiki since well before the dreaded Covid. In the past visits it was good! We recently got reservations! (Who knew)? We had a table for four in a dining room that was packed! The entire restaurant has had a "makeover" and boy is she pretty now! The staff was very friendly and our server was very informative. We started with a couple orders of the pork gyoza. Very good! Light soft wrap just enough "color" on the fried side. We were told about a "special" roll that wasn't on the menu. I don't remember what it was called but it was delicious! Tempura shrimp with a slightly spicy sauce served over a fried rice cake looked like a Macdonald's hash brown. ...(only way I can describe it) it was topped with thin slices of jalapeño peppers! Flavor was outstanding. Only slight negative for me was that there was a bit too much sauce. Then we went with our "go to order"...spicy tuna, eel roll, and a couple pieces of eel nigiri and o'toro (fatty tuna belly). Everything was very fresh. The spicy tuna was exceptional. Chunks of tuna instead of the typical blended mush you get at other restaurants. The o'toro was melt in your mouth almost buttery! This is a must try! We just opted for iced teas. I really can't recall the old prices but I "think" they may have increased a bit...but well worth it! ****I hate giving up a good review for a dining spot that we love because once everyone knows about it we can't get back in! We really enjoyed Shiki! It's not much to look at from the outside, but thanks to pix from prior yelpers we were prepared for that. We were seated immediately in the small but busy dining room. We ordered a Gyoza appetizer then a Bagel Roll, Tuna Avocado Roll, Ikura Nigiri with Quayle eggs, Uni Nigiri, and a House Special Roll (not pictured). (The uni was a recommendation from the owner. I had never tried it before. Tasty, but not a new favorite.) Overall, the fish tasted fresh, which is my number one priority in sushi restaurants. I went to Shiki for the first time a few weeks ago and was absolutely obsessed with it! We did the Omakase and the experience was incredible. Amazing service and the food was unreal with over 10 courses. We had a serious obsession with Shiki in the weeks following, ordering takeout multiple times a week and fantasizing about the next time we could go for another round of Omakase. When my mom scheduled a visit to town, it was the first reservation I made. Over 20 times we talked about how excited we were for this meal again. Immediately when when we arrived we were told that we would have to leave within an hour and 45 minutes. A lot of restaurants do this when they have back to back reservations especially in small spaces like shiki but it automatically kinda set an off mood. Especially couple with our server then greeting us with an attitude and condescending disposition. We explained what our experience was before and she was extremely nasty with snarky responses. From the get go, her demeanor put a damper on our highly anticipated evening. As the dinner continued, she became slightly more pleasant, but felt the need to continuously remind us that "this isn't really what omakase is"-- as if we don't understand the concept of omakase-- and essentially that we shouldn't have done it this way. Keep in mind we just ordered a very expensive bottle of wine, and were spending multiples of what we would have if we had simply ordered off the menu as she suggested. I wish I could do it justice with my description, but her behavior and attitude is honestly so shocking it's indescribable. I have never been treated so rudely by a server. She finally told us that it was our last dish at course 4.... Drastically less than what we received before and with less quality of fish. While everything we ate was amazing, we were unbelievably disappointed with the service, quantity of food, and overall experience especially considering how excited we were after the standard set at our last experience there. We asked for the manager to come over and talk to us and shortly after the chef and owner, James, spoke with us at length. He was so great-- super patient, respectful, understanding, and friendly. He ultimately gave us a discount and was very apologetic which we really appreciated. Although we were disappointed overall with our experience, James was so great and handled it most perfectly and efficiently that I would continue to give my business to Shiki because of him. However, I will never return with the intention of dropping that amount of money again and will most likely opt to only get takeout instead of eating in to avoid disappointment again. read more

When I went here (pre-COVID) service was excellent and since the menu offers so many options, our waiter really helped us with giving us recommendations and answering our questions. Every roll that we got was so delicious, the Shiki SC (super crunch) was especially my favorite (it has korean pear in it! so yummy!!) The atmosphere of the place is relaxing and low-key. I know they're just doing take-out because of COVID but when everything is normal I highly recommend this place for a night out! read more
