We went to Grand Central Market fully determined to go to a specific spot to eat, but unfortunately they were closed for the day. Walking around, we stumbled across Shiku and decided to give them a shot. The Grand Central Market has been a historic destination for decades, offering a variety of shops all with unique vendors and special food! And on a visit to the market on a Tuesday afternoon around 1PM, I was checking out different offerings in the rustic food hall when I came across Shiku, a vibrant "Homestyle Korean" stall with a few specialty items on the menu. Quite a few people were waiting for pickups around the stall, so I figured I'd join them and ordered a Kimchi-Braised Pork Belly which was 15 dollars at the time of this review. I then waited for about 5 minutes before my food was given to me. After leaving the stall, I walked around for a while longer to find a place to sit. But because I was there during peak lunch hour, seats were hard to come by. As I made my way to the exits, empty tables were a more frequent sight, so definitely search around the perimeter of the market to find seats. The market also has streetside dining tables available on Broadway, especially great if coming with a larger party. Sitting down to open the box of food, I was initially a bit skeptical due to the higher 15 dollar price tag. But don't let the size of the box fool you; quantity was portioned fairly. The amount given was equal to one long slice of pork belly you'd find at a typical Korean Barbecue place, so it ended up being very filling. With chunky pieces of meat and a small amount of fat, the dish felt like it was worth the money. In addition, three banchan dishes consisting of kimchi, a pickled vegetable medley, and what tasted like another kind of pickled cabbage were given along with a layer of fluffy white rice on the bottom. These were a nice addition to the bowl and were given in similar portion to the pork belly. Although the rice made up 50%, the banchan made up 25%, and the pork belly made up the last 25% of the dish, quantity of each was higher than your average rice plate. I left the meal full after not eating anything prior in the day, which to me says numbers about the dish's value. At 15 dollars in the downtown area, the price is a little high. But if you take into account the dish contains a more expensive cut of meat, the price could easily be justified. And for the amount of pork belly offered, price to portion was good. Out of any criterion, the quality of the food was definitely the highlight of this experience. And if I had to describe the dish in one word, juicy would be the name of the game! The thick grains of rice were pillowy and lightly salted which buffered the textures of the other items. For the banchan, the kimchi had a perfect level of sourness to it, which in turn also made the spice easy on the mouth. And with a crisp texture, it was very easy to eat. I found the yellow pickled cabbage to have a stronger, more sharp sourness to it which made it more difficult to consume. But because it wasn't saucy, it was also quite easy to eat. The vegetable medley of onions and broccoli absorbed some of the sauce of the kimchi which made them taste more rich than they would have otherwise which was also great. As for the pork belly, it was perfect! The pieces closer to the edge were fatty and melted in the mouth. And even with the dry pieces, the rich fermented kimchi flavor compensated for the lack of moisture. With a diverse flavor profile, the meat was umami, subtly sweet, savory from the sesame seeds on top, and mildly sour/bitter and spicy from the kimchi! It's very rare for a place to master all 5 tastes in the composition of a single piece of meat, so I found the dish to be very impressive. Definitely pick one of these bowls up should you give Shiku a try! Everything about my experience with Shiku was perfect and results in a high 5 star rating! From the experience of eating in this historical market and the fast service to the quantity and quality of food at a fair price point, I did not have any gripes. Portion control does seem to be a larger issue with others' experiences here on Yelp, so definitely keep that in mind. But for my personal experience, portion was generous and satisfactory. Grand Central Market has a variety of food options, but very little Asian-inspired offerings. So if you're in the area and are craving a filling, flavor-packed rice plate. I am giving this place 3 stars only because the fries are so good. I'd come here just for the fries, but that is just about it. I got Korean fried chicken and fries. This is probably some of the worst KFC I have ever had. It is mostly fried batter and no meat. It was very hard and difficult to chew. The flavor is not great either. Service is okay. But the flavor was just not there. You get a strong kick of heat but then it's immediately overpowered by honey, sour and sharp honey flavor which also isn't very sweet. It was my last eating stop in the Market, so I couldn't order everything I wanted to, but so much of the menu is appealing. I got the galbi BBQ rice box, which comes with 3 banchan (sides) for $17. Won't eat here again. Lots of red flags: The food wasn't fresh - they have a giant pile of fried chicken just sitting out in the kitchen, and they flash fry it if you order it, so it comes out burnt. The kimchi fried rice was probably a couple of days old - it was stale and flavorless. The cashier was openly eating food in the kitchen between taking orders, so pretty gross optics. These were all things I didn't notice until after I had paid and was waiting for my order. After only a few bites, my stomach started hurting, so I took that as a sign to just toss the rest in the trash. I work super close to GCM and am there all the time, but I will not be ordering from this place ever again. LA has incredible Korean food - just don't bother getting it at Shiku. So disappointing. Food Generous portion, I wish there was an egg on top of the Andong Spicy Soy-Braised Chicken ($9.50) like in the picture they were advertising, but I didn't know it had to be specially requested. Went here on the weekend and there was no line surprisingly! I ordered the ribs and they were so hot, flavorful, and tender. I was drawn to the "homestyle" Korean food motto and pictures of the entrees in front of the register (I had not eaten some of the Korean plates that were advertised -- Temple Tangsu really peaked my interest). This is what I ate: (1) LA Galbi BBQ ($17 but with tax $18.62): The flavor of the meat was good, but you really have to eat it when it's hot. By that time we sat down to consume our food, eating the cold meat felt unappetizing. Also, the ratio of rice to meat was imbalanced (there was a lot of white rice and not enough meat). I enjoyed that there were at least tiny sides at the edge of the take out box (see photos below). (2) Temple Tangsu ($14): The mushroom was delicious! However, if my friend and I had not shared dishes, this entrée would have been unsatisfactory to me as a meal by itself. Also, the majority of what you're paying for is white rice. I enjoyed the little sides that were provided (see photo below). In terms of parking, we came on a Sunday (IDEAL!) so it was easy especially if you are okay with walking. Our parking spot was 15 minutes away (closer to the Little Tokyo plaza) and FREE. The two employees that were at the front were professional and considerate. When my friend struggled to find her receipt with her order # on it, the employee told her that it was okay if she could not find it because the employee remembered who she was. Came here to get some quick food and it did not disappoint! Orders: - La Galbi: comes with pickled sides, rice, and marinated galbi. The galbi was super flavorful and delicious. The pickled sides complemented the galbi super well. - Braised Pork Belly Plate: comes with pickled sides and rice too. Generous portion of pork belly. Pork belly was super soft and satisfying. Amazing Korean food!! After Baroo closed a while ago, my bf and I eagerly awaited the opening of Shiku and had to drop by when we were in town. We had the spicy Korean fried chicken and temple doshirak (fried pyogo mushrooms) and were so blown away by the quality of both dishes. The KFC was perfectly crispy, spicy, tangy and even for my bf who doesn't normally love fried chicken, he loved them. We also looooved the fried mushrooms and the banchan! Each mushroom piece was crispy and umami and tasted delicious eaten with a bite of rice and a bit of each of the banchans. We ordered online for curbside pick up and seamlessly received our order right outside Grand Central. The fried chicken held up so well despite a 10 min drive to Vista Hermosa for a picnic lunch. Great addition to both GCM and downtown! They officially opened this past Friday, and are still figuring out kinks. I know they were super swamped the first day and the owners were super apologetic on insta. Opening during a pandemic can't be easy, so let's give them a little bit of kindness. Plus, they're swamped for a good reason - - the food is amazing! While I haven't tried the main menu yet, I've ordered a variety of their banchans and every single one is amazing. The prices are super reasonable ranging from 3 - 10 bucks (at least that I've seen so far), allowing you to make your own feast :) They're also constantly updating and playing around with the selection right now so don't blink or you might miss one! Usually I like to recommend a couple of options, but in this situation I really can't. Each of the six banchans I've tried has a completely different flavor profile, so it honestly depends on what you're in the mood for (something sweeter? More savory? Some spice?).
