    Mermaid Roll

Enjoyed a casual dinner here! [[HIGHLIGHT]]We walked in on a Sunday and there were only a few other people around.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was quick and friendly. We shared shumai, seaweed salad, mermaid roll, and a sashimi platter. It was well-priced for the area. Everything was good but not mind-blowing.

Food: 5/5 this place was soooo delicious and the price wasn't too bad! I ordered from the lunch menu and got 2 rolls, tofu, miso soup, rice and salad all for under $30. I think that's a pretty decent price! I loved their chicken tempura roll sooo much. Service: 5/5 the gentleman that was in there serving us was the nicest and very patient and kind! Ambiance: 5/5 we ordered around 3 and no one was in there when we picked up. I loved the low lighting and how the tables weren't shoulder to shoulder with each other. Definitely will be going here again!

I'm always on the lookout for good sushi spots with affordable classic rolls with a good filling to rice ratio. Shima Sushi checked off those boxes, so I ordered 3 rolls to go. Pick up was seamless, but the rolls didn't taste too amazing. The rice was a little bit hard/cold and the fish had a sliiight fishy flavor. I think for the price it's not bad though!

Ordered for delivery. Came pretty quickly and the sushi was super fresh. Loved the salmon avocado roll!

Great lunch specials and expansive menu. The main lady is always so friendly and attentive, and the sushi is always fresh. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A perfect spot for a quick lunch during the workday.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Was not impressed. The staff were not helpful, and seemingly did the bare minimum. I needed to ask for water multiple times-- when the pitcher was right there; they could have left us the pitcher. The sushi was good, and the broiled cod was great at first (rich flavor, soft and chewy, excellent + no pain for braces), but I think I ended up having too much, and didn't feel totally good halfway through. And I did not realize there were small bones in it. In the end, I was not impressed. However, seeing other reviews, I think my experience was a fluke.

Had a great dinner here with my friends last night! Super friendly staff who comes running when they see your hand up - helped each of us split the bill as well at the end. The duck spring rolls were flavorful but slightly on the dry side in my opinion - would recommend to try though because my friends enjoyed it! The food was good and wasn't too expensive either. The sushi for 2 had a basic assortment of sushi - nothing too special but was satisfying. The rest of the rolls were all great as well - my favourite was probably the Crazy Yellowtail Roll, but all of the salmon we had just melted in my mouth. Great time and would recommend!

This has become our go to sushi spot in this neighborhood. Have gotten food to go and also eaten in a few times and the service and food are always very good. The last time we went in it was totally empty. The service, as always, was attentive. Not too pushy to order or anything. We started with the butterfly shrimp which came out hot and crispy. Basically like a small portion of walnut shrimp without the walnuts, really delish. I also had the golden dragon roll which is one of my favorite rolls they do. Paired with some Sapporo's and you can't really go wrong!

Will keep this review short! Had dinner here with family around the NYE holiday week and I was pleasantly surprised at how well priced and fresh the sushi was! In a sea of sushi spots in Manhattan it's hard to know what's what- and prices can def make or break your wallet. I would say this is on the more approachable end with low key vibes that would welcome you when you're in the mood for sushi without all of the frills and extra $ that come with other big name sushi spots in the city. We had one of the special rolls, and the sashimi- both well made. Would recommend to others- more of a casual weeknight type thing. Service was also great- no complaints! (just a funny FYI: I added this in the photos- couldnt help but notice- Their TV was tuned to the Fox News channel) But let that not deter you! lol)

We stopped for a dinner in that place and it was not crowded even after 6:00 pm on workday. I looked the lady who was a hostess and a waitress. Miso soup an sushi were really great. But in the middle of our dining 2 guys just decided to throw away 2 big black trash bags which smelled disgusting . I don't know why they have to carry those bags though the restaurant. Probably a bed luck for me and you would enjoy good sushi without a smell of rotten cabbage.

To drink, I had a Hot Organic Super Matcha Tea for 4.95. It was alright tea, and I wish teas were included in the price point, as otherwise, this place feels pretty traditional. In terms of food, I only ordered from the seasonal menu, so I'm not sure how the rest of the dishes are, but from what I had, I would go back for a light traditional meal. My appetizer was the Dashimaki Tamago/だし巻まき卵たま, or sweet savory omelet with daikon for $6.98. This came with three pieces along with a little dollop of grated radish. The pieces had a light sweetness to them along with a bit of savoriness. They were juicy and a bit bouncy while maintaining some softness. This was standard and good. My main dish was the $19.98 Beef Tan Tan Udon, or ground sirloin beef, spicy broth, baby bok choy, kikurage mushroom, scallions, and sesame seeds. While I have preferred udon from spots like Raku, the udon had a mild chew to it, and they were still good. The broth had a mix of sweetness and spiciness with a nice depth of flavor. The vegetables inside tasted fresh, and the meat added some richness. This was good as well. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to go here, but the food was good. If you're in the area and looking for no frills Japanese dining in a more comfortable atmosphere at pretty decent Midtown East prices, I would recommend this place.

Very cozy restaurant and the staff were attentive and friendly. Luckily their service is very fast so my family and I didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes for a table in the back. I really enjoyed their niku udon. The broth was flavorful but not too salty. The menu offered a variety of options, all reasonably priced between $10-20, ensuring great value for the quality provided. I would come back to Tensai for some comforting Japanese udon noodles!

The décor features light natural wood and bamboo, creating a warm, authentic atmosphere, with an impressive collection of sake lining the wall. The food is outstanding. We started with the seasonal soft-shell crab, which was incredibly fresh and fried to perfection. The daily sashimi special was exceptionally fresh, and the salad was light and refreshing. The must-order Wagyu beef, served on a hot stone, simply melted in our mouths and was unforgettable. Every dish was beautifully prepared, and I enjoyed every single bite. The impeccable service was the icing on the cake. The staff was attentive throughout our meal, making sure we had everything we needed without ever being intrusive. Definitely melt-in-your-mouth quality. The hot udon soup was fine but nothing too special. The hamachi was very good but be aware that it is the hamachi shoulder on the bone, not hamachi sashimi. I tried a sake that is made from red rice, which was really delicious, and my wife had a sauvignon blanc, which was also really good. This is a fun place to try a bunch of Japanese small plates in a nice setting where the tables are not too crowded and the noise level is very reasonable.

Beyond the usual ramen and sushi--an incredible Japanese spot!…read more When friends suggest Japanese food, it's usually the same rotation of ramen, basic sushi, or curry. This place completely breaks the mold! The chefs here put genuine thought, balance, and incredible freshness into every single dish. The space is small and cozy--perfect for groups of 2 to 4--and our server, Alisa, was attentive, friendly, and never pushy. Here is a breakdown of what we ordered: Sake Flight & Sakura Mori: Smooth, light, and the perfect start to the evening. Ankimo (Monkfish Liver): Super innovative and a total standout compared to other spots. Paired brilliantly with the ponzu-wasabi-soy combination. Uni: Exceptionally fresh with that natural, clean sweetness you always hope for. Toro Tataki: Pure summer vibes! Beautifully fresh sashimi topped with the perfect crispiness. Scallop Roll: Fresh with a great bounce to the texture. Karaage: Fried to perfection--super crispy on the outside, incredibly juicy on the inside, and paired with a delicious house-made mustard dipping sauce. Age Tofu: Super soft texture with a wonderfully balanced flavor profile. Takoyaki: Generously packed with octopus. The sauce was a bit heavy-handed, but if you love takoyaki sauce like I do, it hits the spot! Pork Katsu Curry: Crispy, perfectly fried pork chop balanced out seamlessly by the rice and rich curry sauce. Kurobuta Sausage: More of a casual bar-style bite that felt a little out of place next to the other refined dishes, but saved by that great house mustard. Black Sesame Ice-Cream & Fried Sweet Potato Dessert: We usually skip dessert when we order this much food, but this combination was an incredible, must-order finish to the night! You can tell the kitchen takes immense pride in their craft. I can't wait to come back!
