Some people might walk into Shine Morida and assume that they are going to be in for just another elevated fine dining experience. The servers are nice and groomed (albeit in a trendy manner,) the deco is clean and hip, and the dining crowd is rich and young. In my experience, this is a recipe for sub-par food, as some restaurants betray their dishes for atmosphere. However, you couldn't be more wrong about Shine. Their food is absolutely to die for. I don't know if you could pick ANY dish off their chinese/japanese menu and be disappointed. My personal fave is the Shine's crispy chicken. Freaking delicious. The service is friendly and attentive also. I can't say that I have any complaints, honestly. I highly recommend this retaurant to anyone looking for a fine asian dining experience. read more

One of the rolls I got it was a spicy tuna but I forget what they call it was really mushy tasting and bland. :| But the times I've been there before I have really enjoyed the mongolian bbq...oo and their drinks are always really tasty. read more

5 stars for the food, 5 stars for service, 4 stars for somewhat small portions. This place is a little bit on the pricey side for chinese, but the quality and flavor of their food is always excellent. Came in here recently and ordered the cucumber martini, it was cool and refreshing. Ordered the spicy kung pao chicken, general tso chicken, and the Mangoku maki roll. The kung pao and general tso's chicken were both good, but again, just a somewhat small portion for the price. The mangoku maki roll however is definitely worth the price, and coming to this restaurant period. Fresh salmon, wrapped in tempura crunch with spicy mayo, wrapped on the outside with freshly sliced mango and spicy crunchy topping. It's crunchy, sweet, spicy, savory, and creamy all in one. I have gone out of my way to come here just for this specific roll, and it is on of my favorite sushi rolls I have ever eaten! read more

This is my favorite Asian restaurant in Chicago... I take the 30,000 foot view and say "Asian," because that's the Chinese and Japanese quirk of this Armitage restaurant... I love sushi, and have my go-to dishes here -- we order the sizzling rice soup for two (awesome), and the edamame to start...then, I order a Dragon roll -- honestly, the best Dragon roll I've had in any U.S. city, and I've tried them in San Francisco, Washington D.C., NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Wilmington, DE (don't ask why), and San Diego. It has a tempura crunch, and the unagi is perfect. I also order a spicy tuna (generic, but good), and sometimes a "Mexican" roll, which is very fun. Jacky, my wife, orders a Harvest chicken stir fry (not being a sushi fan), that is very, very good, and we also like their noodle dishes. Our other favorite part is that they deliver, and they are FAST -- I mean 30 min. from order to your door. Can't beat that!!! If you eat in, you also get the luxury of a very cool/hip interior (recently updated I believe), and friendly, helpful staff. Shine rocks. read more

I have only been to the actual Shine restaurant once for a meal, but when I am ordering in consistently defer to the great selection and super fast delivery time that is consistent for a delivery order. I am a sucker for the mogolian beef and lettuce wraps from Shine and like magic, they get to my door hot and fresh. Have you ever had delivery that comes to your door cold and bland? Not so for the drivers at Shine. I sometimes wonder if they have some crazy teleportation device in the back of the restaurant, how else could they get the soup here so hot? If you are in their delivery area and want to stay in, give Shine a shot. You won't be disappointed. read more

Meh. Meh. Meh. This was my first time to Shine, and most likely my last. I have had much better sushi experiences than this one. I ordered two rolls: the scallop tempura maki and the ichiban roll. Suprising, they lacked flavor. Also, my rolls did not stay together very well, and one of the rolls was cut unevenly making every other bite difficult to eat! The service was VERY slow. From the time we ordered to the time we got our food was about 35 minutes, and there were many times where guests at our table were asking, "where is the waiter?" It has a nice interior, and the patio looks nice, just too chilly last night to sit there. I had a good time because of the company I kept, but I don't plan on making a return trip any time soon. read more

Alright, I'm learning more and more about this sushi business...ate here last night and thought it was really good! I tried the spicy maki (salmon, avocado & cilantro)...and the bagel roll...which is smoked salmon and cream cheese. I liked them both! The crab rangoon were good (The sauce was amazing!) and we also had the fried calamari (sesame-jalapeno...awesome). Little did I know that my friend wouldn't eat the part of the calamari with the suckers on it, so we only ate about half (and had to hide an expecially big squid under the plate cuz we felt like it had eyes!)...the flavor was good, though! Overall, a nice meal, nice ambience, we had a great table by the window, perfect for people-watching. Service was OK, they were busy, so I cut our waiter a little slack. I'd definitely go back! Atmosphere-This place has a great ambience and it's quite a big restaurant. IT is very swanky, but you don't feel misplaced if you are dressed in jeans. The bar is really cool with tiles and lights coming up from the bottom. Food-A great selection of asian fusion, sushi, chinese, thai, japanese, with apps and salads from all selections. I had the spicy scallop roll and ginger salad. The ginger salad was huge and very good. The rolls were very good, but really warm when I got them. It didn't bother me, but it could bother some other people. They had a lot of flavorful martinis, but I stuck with wine...the white wine I had was good, but these prices are more expensive that some restaurants I have seen downtown, weird! Our service was not bad, but it was not good. Our waiter seemed to not have a personality. We didn't dock him too much for it, but it was weird, he could have gotten more tip! After my first really mediocre experience I never thought I'd make it back... but I had a party to meet up with, and this is where they went... This time around, the service was *excellent* and the food... OK. The new space at the new location is laid out a bit different... The old place was more open, this has a few smaller rooms. For our group, we were seated in a private room that was just off the bar. The room was equipped with AV equipment (flat panel TV, DVD player, stereo, etc), it probably holds about 25 or so people (though it gets really, really loud). Our group was about 15-20 people maybe. Our waitress was awesome. She didn't miss a beat the whole night. She took drink orders and even though not everything came back from the bar at once (beers quick, martinis a few minutes longer) never missed a drink and knew exactly who ordered what. For our food, same thing... she had everyone's order down perfectly. I don't think she missed anything in the 2 or 3 hours we were there, and that's saying a lot considering our check was about $800 and long. The place is great for drinks. The food I would still put in the average category. They have pretty much the same menu as a few other similar places in town. (Several of ex-Shine people have started at least a few of those similar places). Taste-wise, I didn't really have anything that was in the "oh wow' category, it seemed pretty average in taste too. Maybe not the best sushi I've had, but not bad. The pacing of the food to come out was much, much better this time around. Nothing took too long. The bathroom was nice, though at the last location the bathroom was out of order when we went, so anything would be nicer. :] It is *NOT* BYOB any longer. They have a full bar with a pretty extensive drink list. I probably won't be back on my own any time soon, but overall I was pretty satisfied. The new location is a win for Shine. It's the type of dining room where sound is magnified when it's crowded. If applicable, would recommend the hearing aid that best cuts the background noise. For all others, just know it's better for groups versus a quiet romantic dinner. Even though our waitress had ample reason to kick us out- her every appearance coincided with our most offensive and disturbing moments of conversation- she was a pleasant trooper. She even comped us her favorite roll (a flaming maki), as well as two orders of dessert (a tasty warm apple bready Cinnabon type thing). We decided to have dinner here with some friends after reading the predominantly positive reviews. We were a bit skeptical about a restaurant that attempts to serve Thai, Japanese and Chinese cuisine...but we wanted to eat in the Lincoln Park area so we decided to chance it. We were pretty disappointed. When a waiter remarks that there are a few items on the menu that are "ACTUALLY pretty good" then you know you are swimming in dangerous waters. Our waiter made casual comments like this more than once, as if he was somehow warning us to get up and run away quickly while we still could. We should have taken his hint. I must preface this by saying that none of us felt like having sushi, so this review only covers the non-sushi items on the menu. For appetizers, we had the edamame, the sea bass and the soft shell crab. The edamame came out cold and clammy with barely a hint of sea salt. The soft shell crab was wimpy and mainly fried exoskeleton, with barely any fleshy meat. The sea bass, however, was pretty good, but not the best we have had. I was in the mood for noodles so I ordered the Yaki-soba noodles with pork and cabbage. The dish tasted like it had been doused in soy sauce and then showered with salt. Way too over-salted for my taste, and the crunchy cabbage that I was hoping for was barely detectable. My husband had the lemon grass beef which was tough and over-cooked. We were expecting soft, tender beef with a lot of lemon grass flavor. What we got was salty, over-cooked meat. Our friends also commented that their sesame chicken was over-cooked. Probably the only dish that passed muster was the hot pot my friend ordered with tofu. It had a nice curry flavor that was not overpowered by a whole boatload of salt. Maybe it serves us right for taking the risk of going to a Pan-Asian restaurant. I will hesitate before I ever do that again. read more

I'll be honest: I didn't expect much from Shine. I have a long-standing rule not to trust sushi from pan-Asian restaurants. This probably stems from the fact that the first pan-Asian places I encountered were shady joints in West Philly advertising all-you-can-eat sushi - Would *you* trust that? Shine is a far cry from places like that. Situated in the heart of Lincoln Park, this restaurant offers a full Asian menu spanning a number of cuisine styles. The star of the menu is (and rightfully so) the sushi. I am a fan of simple sushi, especially when trying somewhere new, because there aren't a million extra flavors interfering with the fish. That in mind, my contribution to the table was a salmon and avocado roll and a spicy scallop roll. Because of raw scallops' tendency to get slimy, it is a good "test" roll - and is great when done correctly. And it was! Everything was. Other highlights of the meal included the "Hawaii Roll," the "Honey Roll," and the "Toro Maki". Everything was absolutely fresh and so delicious - the three of us eating sushi cleaned our plates! The bill wasn't bad, either - 2 appetizers, 2 $5 corkage fees, a bowl of pad thai, and 6 rolls of sushi came out to $100 even for 4 people. I do have a pet peeve about restaurants who are only BYOB but still charge corkage (I don't think it's fair to charge me if there is no other option), but I don't believe this place is staying BYOB for long, so it's a somewhat moot point. I've always been a Toro fanatic, and Shine lacks the awesome "family feel" you find there. Toro isn't perfect, though, and the wait and lack of reservations can get in the way if you want to get sushi with a bigger group of people. Shine is a great option for people looking for very good sushi in Lincoln Park, particularly if you are with a large group, and extra-particularly if you are with a large group that includes some non-Sushi people (although they are missing out!). read more

I've been on a mission to force myself to branch out to new chinese/asian/sushi joints as often as possible, because I tend to keep going to the same places over & over. Shine, you're finally up to the plate. The sushi we had was pretty tasty, though some of the rolls kept falling apart. I do give mad props to the Honey roll, which was my favorite; crunchy, sweet & delicious. Service was prompt, and our waitress was really friendly. I definitely want to go back and try some of the warm dishes on the menu, I kept staring at the people by us that had chicken-vegetable somethings and it all looked really good! My only big negative would be that it seems a little over-priced for what it is... I've had bigger and badder-asser sushi at my standard go-to joints for less, but as far as taste goes, Shine is spot-on. read more

I really, really enjoyed our food and service here. We ate outside on a beautiful night which made it even better. It's on a side street so you miss a lot of the busy or annoying Armitage traffic. The sake list is fantastic. It does a short and simple job of explaining what each of the sake's are in body and taste. We ordered the Sapporo rolls, Spicy Octopus, Negi Hamachi and ... the last one I can't remember. Something with eel and their spicy mayo. They automatically give you light soy sauce which is so nice not to have to beg for it! Score! Oh yeah...if you do the American Airlines dining program they give you 5 miles/dollar. I've been to Shine twice (most recently last night) and I really love this place. This is owned by the same people as Rise.... get it... Rise n Shine! hahahhaha My friend and I went last night at 7pm and had a great time. The place was half empty and we were seated in the second room. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. What I love most are two things--- peach martinis and the honey roll. YUMM!! The honey roll is white tuna with cucumber rolled in tempura crunch. I always get it without the sauce but that's because I don't like mayo. The roll is one of their specialties and costs $11. And I ordered the negi hamechi (yellow tail/scallion), which was fresh and very tasty. My friend ordered the crazy roll and a hand roll but forgot the name. She loved the food and ordered a lechee martini, which she loved. It wasn't too sweet. By the time we left around 9, the place was packed! Every table was occupied but you can still have a good conversation and not be talking loudly. The service is always good and the waitress came by often and when we needed something (i.e. extra ginger), it cam quickly. The food took about 20-30 minutes, which I thought was standard. I love this place and like coming here when I am in Lincoln Park. Also, street parking is never a problem for me and after 6pm, it's free. read more

Sometimes a girl needs sushi with a reservation. Shine has scrumptious rolls - among my favorites are the rock and roll, spicy tuna (a generous portion of tuna) the new york, and, most recently the "flaming" maki. Didn't know that flaming meant literally on fire - the roll arrived at our table with a Bacardi fire circled by the melt-in-your-mouth salmon and avocado rolls. Excessive and yummy. read more

This place was a lot nicer inside than I expected! Prices are on the higher end, but I went there with a group of girlfriends on a week night and we had a great time. There is a full bar which is great. We had wine and cocktails and it might even be a good place to arrive a little early for dinner and have a drink at the bar first. I liked how the tables were round- weird thing to like, I know, but I always feel like a round table creates more intimacy and better conversation! I ordered the chirashi which was very good, fresh, but I wish there was more fish included. I could eat pounds of fish at a time so I might be over-exaggerating a bit. I've lived steps from Shine Morida for almost a year and have never been before. We finally ventured out on Friday night. Like so many people, I get a little sketched out by whole sushi, Japanese, Chinese, all in the same restaurant, thing. And, I'm not going to argue that Shine is authentic, or that it's the best Asian food around, but it's good, and I'd definitely go back. For me, it's the appeal of having an Asian restaurant near home. For starters my boyfriend and I got the calamari, which was good. I would have appreciated some sauce, but it was good. I had the sesame chicken and it was delicious, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. My boyfriend got sushi and it was really, good. He had a great roll with mango and spice and he loved it. The rolls are huge...a great amount of slices in each, and the ingredients are fresh. We didn't have room for dessert, but are looking forward to our next visit. We'll definitely be back soon. read more

This place is sub par when it come to the Chicago sushi scene. First of let me start by say the restaurant was uncomfortably FREEZING! Even the hostess had in her winter jacket. I guess with their terrible food they cant afford to pay the heating bill. We ordered a few of the specialty rolls which were both bizarre and not good. One was a tuna roll flavored with avocado and lime zest topped with a piece of salmon. Sounds good on paper but terrible. There was some sort of jelly in the roll that gave it a weird texture and threw off the whole taste. I think I was like a lime jelly to add flavor. The other was a wagyu beef roll topped with "partially cooked" wagyu. Nothing partial here, the roll was gross and fell apart. The only reason this place got 2 stars from me was the great service and the miso soup I had, which I loved. But then again who can screw up miso soup. Won't be back here again, my advice is drive 5 block north and hit Sushi Toro. read more

I honestly don't understand why this doesn't get better ratings. This review is judging Shine for what it is... It's not an "all you can eat" or "half priced rolls after 4PM" place. It's also not a super upscale sushi place or high end sushi place either so I don't think it's fair to compare Shine to these places as it's right in the middle. It's pretty large with a lot of seating so there's usually never any issues being seated on a Friday or Saturday night. It's very casual and I regularly see families dining there. Shine has a nice outdoor space which is not the norm for a sushi place. The rolls are pretty good and there are some fun / creative ones which I like. The Kobe Beef roll was really good so I highly recommend that as well as the crab rangoon. I'm not sure if it was a special but they had half price bottles of wine on Saturday which you won't find anywhere! We went with a party of seven on Saturday and were seated immediately without reservation. We were served quickly and the staff was nice. I think the bill came out to around $150 which included 5 rolls, two crab rangoon and two bottles of wine. read more

We'd heard solid reviews about Shine from the sister in law so had to check it out. It offers up a pretty diverse Asian menu (chinese, japanese, sushi, fusion, you name it) and while not excellent it was A-OK. Chose al fresco off a busy Armitage, yet the side street/walk we were sat at was pretty quiet and quaint. Not particularly feeling the Chinese or Sushi, I chose some mixed Asian inspired appetizers. I must say the starters are pretty good size and for the price, a great bargain one might consider as their entree. I went w the Crab Cakes app were two delicious crab cakes, wrapped in wonton and then lightly pan fried...as mentioned, good size and you get two for $10. Also, after looking at the incredible picture of the seared Sea Bass app from Shine's website picked that as well...it was sea bass in miso and supposed to be over mushrooms but sat upon a bed of crispy noodles..oh well, still good and w two (approx) 4 oz fillets for $12, another great deal ! Asked if the boy could get a small/kid portion of chicken fried rice but they couldn't accommodate so ordered the regular entree. It was HUGE (and average in taste) and now we have left overs for the next few days. Probably be back at some point to try more of the many many menu items. read more

Nestled in the Armitage shopping corridor, Shine-Morida is one of the few sit-down restaurants in the immediate area. Unfortunately, it's way overpriced, the staff is a little too trendy for my tastes, and the quality of the food wildly varies. The first time I went, I had one of their sushi specials, which featured white tuna, spicy mayo, and tempura crunch. It was delicious, and I'm picky about my sushi. When I went back several months later, however, it was gone, so I chose a more traditional tuna roll. The rice was not very fresh, and neither was the tuna. For the most part, it was simply bland and unoffending. But this inconsistency leads me to believe that the sushi is only okay. The entrees are very good; beef with broccoli is my favorite, and they do it well here, with a salty brown sauce and heaps of rice. But it's way, way overpriced for something so traditional and not particularly special. Overall, not a bad place to go for a date or take company, but if I could use one word to describe it I was choose mediocre. There is way more interesting sushi around town, done far better and cheaper. And you can get a lot of these dishes at your local mom-and-pop Chinese place for far cheaper. read more

In fact as I looked over the menu, I told my girlfriends they have a little too much going on, this is probably not going to taste good at all...hello Chef Ramsay can you let them know that they should pick a type of Asian food and perfect it. So damn good. The atmosphere here is great -- clean and modern, but not annoyingly so. I have no idea why something so simple impresses me so much, but I remain blown away by their cucumber water. (I am apparently easy to please.) The potstickers were really tasty, but most of all I enjoyed the sushi -- I had the rock and roll maki, which is one of the best rolls I've ever tasted. Shine... i'll be honest, i omit the chinese and go straight for the sushi... i always get asked, why do you go to shine when sai is only 2 blocks down the street... answer's simple, the overall experience... sai cafe is great and has great sushi, however... shine's location is perfect to people watch... when the weather is nice, they open there oversized windows and a window seat is great stimulation watching the passing crowds and petite dogs... armitage is great to spot and watch the stereotypical lincoln park crowd, and shine is in the heart of it all... also, during summer hours you can catch and outdoor seating section to ensure you get the best view of the street... the staff has been extremely friendly each time i have gone and the sushi is great too... i personally like the special honey roll with raw tuna, avocado, cucumber, and a special honey mustard sauce... try it! the sushi and food here isn't overly amazing, but the overall experience keeps me coming back... read more

Big fan of the new location... I think it feels a lot 'warmer' than the old one. Not trying to be as modern/hip, now it's just comforting, and there's still outdoor seating. Shine has some unique rolls which are fun to try, for example the Honey Roll. I would recommend branching out for this one, white tuna with a little tempura crunch on top. Also tried a lobster roll, couldn't taste the lobster a whole lot.. but the Spicy Scallop was really good for just a simple roll! Also, the House Salad is pretty big, not the usual little 8 pieces of lettuce, which is also why it's $6 and not $3. Will definitely go again, the old location didn't do much for me last time I ate there so I was hesitant, but now I think I'll be a regular. read more

Looking for an amazing hot & sour soup? Look no further. You must try it at Shine Morida. It has just the right amount of kick and will hit the spot if you're craving a good hot & sour soup. I think it has the perfect blend of bamboo shoots, tofu & mushroom in a piping hot & sour chicken broth! Now onto the main course..... Do you enjoy a good Dragon Roll? I know I do. For only $10, you can enjoy fresh unagi and tempura crunch wrapped in fresh avocado rice roll. If you're looking for a really good appetizer, may I recommend the Shine's Shrimp Roll. Personally, I like this one better when dining in (tastes better), but anyways it has shrimp, cream cheese, and scallion in crispy wonton wraps with a sweet dipping sauce. I've gotten take out probably about 50+ times from this place and have dined in probably less than 10, but every time I eat their sushi, edamame, or Chinese dish I'm NEVER disappointed. My family and I have been going to Shine for ~10 years. It's been our go-to sushi restaurant all this time and we have loved it. However, the level of service my family and I received during dinner tonight was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had. It started with the hostess who was not the kindest. Then, about an hour and 15 minutes after we sat down the waitress told us they needed us to leave because they had reservations, but we also had reservations and weren't yet finished with our meal. She proceeded to give us strong attitude and remind us multiple times that others were waiting, which was not our fault. They should have better planned their reservations. Truly disappointing considering how often we've frequented the restaurant and the number of people we've introduced to the restaurant. read more
