My to-go order is the Hornet on a Dutch crunch roll with everything on it except mustard. Make it a combo with chips and a drink, and you'll have an incredible lunch. The ambiance is different from other sandwich spots in midtown. The chairs and tables are older and worn, and it's small inside, but it's also inside an old house that was converted into a restaurant. That alone makes this place unique. People hang out inside or outside with friends and enjoy the vibes. There's a real sense of community that the Sandwich Spot brings along with uniquely crafted sandwiches. All of the sandwiches are named after people or landmarks in Sacramento. The staff are all friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and will help you with recommendations if you're not sure which sandwich to get. It honestly feels like you're in the company of good friends. The staff joke around and seem to enjoy their job and working together. You won't be disappointed by trying the Sandwich Spot during your next lunch break or on the weekend, hanging out with a friend.

I ordered the #19 with turkey, prosciutto, avocado, and swiss on a dutch crunch roll. The bread had just gone into the oven, so we had to wait about 10 minutes, but I can't complain because it was baked fresh to order. Overall, I thought the sandwich was very good, but honestly not quite as amazing as people online had made it out to be. It was definitely good, but I don't know if I'd be dying to go back when I think Ike's, Mr. Pickle's, Corti Bros, and maybe even Nugget or Sprouts make more interesting sandwiches. To me, those places use slightly higher quality ingredients as well, though maybe I just didn't order the best sandwich here. Overall, it was a good sandwich and a good experience. My expectations were probably just a little too high. I wouldn't be dying to come back but also wouldn't say no if someone wanted to go there for lunch.

The chocochip cookie was soft, sweet, and crumbled but still moist and a little bit chewy, totally hit the spot for the end of the meal. All in all, delicious deli sandwiches and sides from Tony's. Not sure about service but the presentation was good, making the ambiance tasteful and inviting.

The sandwiches were prepared quickly and looked great initially, but while eating mine, I bit down on something hard and spit out a piece of glass. Finding glass in food is a serious safety hazard that could cause severe harm. I called immediately, and they offered a refund or a replacement sandwich. When I returned around 3:15 PM, the shop was closing early because they ran out of bread entirely. When I mentioned my call to the staff member up front, she dismissed me, saying she couldn't help because they were out of bread. After I clarified that I just wanted the refund I agreed on with the manager, she handed me off to someone else without another word. Instead of an apology for serving a dangerous foreign object in my food, the staff handed me cash (even though I paid by card) and essentially brushed me off with a poor attitude. Mistakes happen, but finding glass in my meal combined with zero accountability or basic customer service ensures I will never return

The claim is that the side dish is made with a blend of three cheeses and a touch of spice, but it tastes flat, like melted cheddar cheese mixed with too much milk. My cheese craving was fulfilled, and that would be all Sourdough's signature mac & cheese is good for. It's mediocre. As for the sandwich, what I received wasn't pesto. While I was mentally recalculating my schedule, I noticed what I'm eating should have basil. Peering into what I was chewing, the sandwich was predominantly orange from a sauce I don't recognize and yellow from the mustard. My pesto sandwich wasn't green. No matter, mistakes were made and I'll just save the food for tomorrow. I didn't feel like getting the attention of the employee glued to her phone, crouched out of view behind the counter. I meant to take a picture of my sandwich for this review, but a man kept staring at my bag. He tried asking if he could see my sandwich a few times in broken English. Fortunately I arrived when there wasn't another person in the store so I was able order up a plain ham and cheese sub with L, T, and A. I communicated my wish for a simple sandwich and it arrived, albeit ridiculously overstuffed and above my budget expectations. Props for kindness and understanding. My first visit to any shop is always testing how well they do basics. So far, I'm not an Ike's fan. I'm no newcomer to sub sandwiches. At 82, and being a Massachusetts native, I've been a sub girl for at least 75 years, ever since I could wrap my fingers around the perfect sub roll. At first I was really excited to have found a new spot to hang out and study. I have just finished law school and am prepping for the CA bar so I spend 10-12 hours a day studying. Usually at various coffee shops around Sacramento. I've definitely spent A LOT of time pretty much everywhere that serves coffee in this city. My first experience at Shine was pretty pleasant. I went with a friend and had some coffee and food and studied for a few hours. The food was average, but took foreverrrr to come out. However, the next few times I went to Shine, I was completely shocked at how bad we were treated. The last time, a colleague and I went there to study for a few hours and after he ordered a sandwich that took no less than 25 minutes to come out, I got up to use the restroom. There was a lock with a code on the bathroom door so I asked the owner who was behind the counter if I could have the code. She rudely looked my up and down before asking if I had purchased anything. I told her I had just arrived a little bit ago, but I definitely planned to order a few things as i would be studying for quite a few hours longer. She would not let me use the restroom until I purchased something from her at the counter at that exact second, which I thought was ridiculous. I completely understand the need to have people purchase things to prevent people from sitting for hours and freeloading seats and internet. However, it was clear my friend had already purchased items and I, of course, was planning to. After then being berated by a homeless woman who wandered into Shine, bothering customers, I felt like the owner (of all people) had treated us the same way. (Although we're clearly paying, excited, willing, new customers with many friends in desperate need of a place to study). A few days later I saw my colleague at a usual study spot. He said "I can't go to shine anymore- that was awful. A shame too, because I thought it'd be a cool new place." I'm not at all surprised we came to the same conclusion - nor am I surprised that this is a struggling business. Mediocre food, sloth-like service, and an owner who patronizingly treats customers like vagrants - no thanks - I'll continue giving my business to the other cafes in midtown. read more

Impressed seriously it is enough to make me come out of review retirement Shine is under new ownership ( i had only been in under old ownership once) and you can tell - gone is the old style ( as in the I just turned 18 and moved out of my parents house so ill take whatever furniture you have style) in is a sleek warm mid century style that fills you with just the right amount of nostalgia (even if its just nostalgia for what you think the era was like because you weren't born yet) and wraps you in a warm hug (for just a minute though because I hate hugs) ok ok ill cut to the chase the food is consistent and delicious - this can be a weak spot with a lot of cafes but not Shine - they excel and keeping standards high the owners - are always there - they are really taking a hands on approach and I love it - they are friendly without being annoying the drinks - well they have cider - that is all i need to say oh and the coffee is excellent too :) Live music - they have a great selection - reminds me of Fox and Goose back in the day (like 20 years back in the day) they have different nights and of course different crowds are attracted to each type of music get here - in the morning evening afternoon - whenever you are sure to have a great time, great meal, great conversation - well you get the point read more

This place is not good. The new ownership has driven this place into the ground. What used to be a great part of the neighborhood has turned into a high school hang out with kids vaping and getting high on Kava. The coffee is terrible now. They don't have food anymore. And they do not follow any covid restrictions. Further, the staff sucks. I went up to get a coffee and the guy behind the counter was on his phone the entire time, with his feet up on a stool, and he wasn't wearing a mask. They really destroyed such a rad place for people of all types to hang out. What makes me even more mad is that this place is benefiting off of the old Shine - they have their old pictures and reviews up, and they mention that they have live music which isn't true. The worst part is that, they are doing great. They allow maskless kids to hang out in there, and let them chug kava. This place isn't going anywhere, and they have no incentive to change. I don't understand the negative reviews at all... Shine is uber ultra mega awesome. Period. Great music. As a jazz guitarist and bassist who regularly plays at the Tuesday jazz jam session, this is THE best small venue in Sacramento to hear all kinds of music, and the acoustics are much better than you would think. You can have a conversation even up near the stage without having to shout or stuff in earplugs. Don't diss The Rena. The owner *cares* about the customers, but sometimes Shine can be very busy and it is not Starbucks or a fast food restaurant. Quality food and drink takes time, and the selection of wines and beer are decent... if she seems a bit abrupt, its almost always because as a small business owner she is typically juggling 6 or 7 flaming bowling balls at the same time. You want more details on the awesomeness, read the positive reviews. Ignore the negative ones because they are simply not true. read more

Dimitri ... If only I were a former employee you would have a point. However, I am not. I did however delete my last review, as it was centered around one person and their poor service, not the overall store. So here is a review of the general store. The food does taste good, however it is often stale. (I was in ... not having food, and another customer complained that her bagel was stale and to hard to eat.) The coffee is doesn't taste good, I can't put my finger on it, but it just isn't right. The atmosphere is also really strange, their is not enough seating and it doesn't provide an atmosphere to sit, relax, and visit with friends. So like I said before, this could be a really cool place, given time. However it is doubtful that because of the lack of, well really anything good that it will make it. read more

Shine has officially lost its soul. They've literally gentrified KRATOM. They serve kratom tea and kava and it's all very expensive. The drip coffee costs four dollars. All of the staff and regulars of Shine under its previous ownership have entirely disappeared. Also, though there was a "masks required" sign on the door, one man at the counter was NOT wearing a mask, neither was another man who was behind the counter, seemingly doing some work on a laptop. Also, this place is now Tiki themed which, in 2020, seems like a hugely out of touch move. I presume once the pandemic is over, they won't host live music either. The Shine that Sacramento knew and loved is dead, and Shine Kava stands in its place, a reanimated corpse. Shine Kava is to the old Shine as a taxidermied rat is to Mickey Mouse. read more

This is the place for you if you like: 1. No parking being / taken up for hours and entire days at a time. 2. motorcycles on the sidewalk.yes you have to ride on the sidewalk to get it on and off. 3. Litter 4. Loud no hesitation use of the N word Hard R! 5. Racist insignias on huge trucks in your face- that take up so much space and block the crosswalks and street view necessary for driving. 6. I used to enjoy coming to Shine. Hadn't been since before COVID hit. Didn't realize there were questionable new owners who refuse to follow safety protocols. Absolutely no one is masked. Their menu is very limited and bleh. They make grilled cheese in the microwave, FFS. A group of obnoxious frat bro types sat at the bar watching football and yelling obscenities. The only reason they have a 4-star rating is because of the reputation the original owners built. Even the majority of pictures of the cafe, food & drinks are from the original owners. Don't waste your time or your money. Something weird is going on here. I seriously wish I could leave negative stars for this place. read more

Shine has been many faces since the business first opened, but they've all been good lookin and the important things have stayed consistent; on a weekly basis you will find: live music, poetry readings, rotating local art on display and for purchase, a hub for creative writing workshops & business meetings, an all around inviting space to hang out with friends, and plenty of outlets to plug in devices for studying or working. Food is good & fairly priced. Great options for herbal and caffeinated teas. I'm a coffeehouse junkie and this place accomplishes that laid back, always-been-there feel that most other coffee houses struggle to achieve. read more

Used to be one of my favorite Midtown coffee places. Especially loved jazz night on Thursdays. Went in for the first time since Covid. Great atmosphere with new management. But, if you're working on your laptop, forget about it. A bunch of people were all crowded together at the bar. Not a problem. But, no one had headphones on, so everything they were playing on their phones was heard everywhere. The guy working there didn't care either. And, no one in that whole crowd had masks on. Great coffee shop and one of the only all ages venues still around. Events happen nearly every night, from weekly trivia and open mic on Tuesday and Wednesday, to Jazz nights on Thursdays and live music featuring local acts on Fridays and Saturday nights. Coffee is made from local coffee roasters, Temple and Naked Coffee, and the food they serve is made in house. Grab a breakfast burrito if you go early! I used to love coming here with friends to spend time and have fun. Lately, I have stopped coming here and going to different and much better board game cafes because the staff is incompetent and understaffed. came here with the gf the other evening and i really liked it i have a love hate relationship with downtown/midtown its the same crowd every night every where and that gets old but Shine was an awesome change of pace it was bought not too long ago and the new owners jumped in feet first i really like the new look - hip cool without trying the furniture is awesome it would make an antique person go nuts the staff is wonderful the food is tasty - def on my go to list from now on read more

Terrible service. Unfriendly staff. The bar tender named Javie is a complete tool. He has been slinging racial and homophobic slurs left and right all night for little to no reason. He has no respect for personal space or boundaries. If you want a terrible time and a little prick calling you names, then I highly recommend this place. You may have a better time getting a colonoscopy by a drunken Edward scissor hands. The cava is so-so. The toilet paper is only 1 ply also. read more

I decided to give it a second chance. While I did have a slightly better experience with the service, the product is still lacking. I was is in during the evening last week. I ordered a tea and it just tasted horrible. It seems like this place just needs to work some kinks out and it would be decent like I said before. If you want a lecture about how Italian espresso drinks are not the same as Starbucks I highly recommend coming here and ordering a caramel macchiato. And if you want to pay twice as much just to feel like you're as pretentious as the guy who owns this place, it's the place for you. Also, they've decorated with bad art, old people furniture, and douchebags. read more

From what I've observed, the new owners are working hard to alienate the older regulars and attract only the worst people to be new customers. Customers frequently park their motorcycles onto the sidewalk, or park their trucks with their beds angled to block traffic headed north on 14th. Just a bunch of tools really. read more

Very flavorful, I actually could pick out all the notes but I feel like the bitterness of the coffee overpowers a lot of the drink. Overall, this seems like a convenient place to grab something but not spectacular enough to go out of my way as I did today.
