    Lamb skewers
    Timothy L.

Food was pretty good and the staff was very kind and welcoming. The location is kind of interesting; you have to take an elevator when you get to the strip mall in order to get here. I tried their lamb soup with noodles and the lamb skewers. The lamb soup was pretty good and the broth was so flavorful. The lamb meat however could have been tastier, but the soup truly was the saving grace. The lamb skewers were good, they were well seasoned but the price felt steep for ordering 5 individual skewers. Overall, pretty enjoyable experience. This definitely reminded me of my time as a kid visiting family in China and they would take me to lamb specific restaurants. Very nostalgic experience.

This tofu portion is tiny and salty. Not recommended!

Came here based on reviews. The staff were very friendly and provides good service. However the food was just okay. Order the lamb soup, but not the two items below. The breakfast tofu doesn't taste remotely close to being authentic. The portion was tiny, but can't finish a bigger portion anyway, since it was too salty. Don't order this one unless you love soy sauce. The biscuits doesn't have much flavor, especially the sesame paste biscuit. Don't order it.

I love lamb. I love skewers and I love soup. Everything I've ordered was above great. Will go into details then.

Lamb heaven. Pretty much everything here is lamb, lamb, and more lamb. I am weeping while writing this. Parking is available in the strip mall parking spot. Surprisingly high number of empty spots. The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor, where Thai Son used to be (they have now moved across the street to the Walmart complex). Decor feels like something straight out of a Chinese museum, with the fur outfits on a wall, and the antique looking tables and chairs. None of the staff speak English at all. Literally. This includes the staff who pick up the phone. Nobody spoke Cantonese there either. Be sure to bring a friend who speaks Chairman Mao's Mandarin. The menu has written English, but hopefully one doesn't plan on asking any questions. Looks like every table gets a free green onion ham cake and sesame cake. Buns are a bit dry, but some chili oil took care of that. Bonus. Lamb pluck in soup - pluck is defined as lungs, liver, and heart. I definitely saw slices of liver and assume the other mystery parts are the lungs and heart. Excellent flavour. There are also clear noodles inside. Spicy pouting lamb - yes, that's what the translation says. Nice large chunks of lamb, with a bit of heat from the accompanied chili peppers. Lamb with cold noodle - nice and tangy, with plenty of flavour. Grilled lamb - 4 large pieces. Meat was nice and crisp. Almost thought I was eating a pork chop. Lamb dumplings - nice and plump. Skins are a bit on the thick side (ie Northern style). Went well with chili sauce and vinegar. Lamb skewers - covered in cumin. Spiciness can be specified. Not greasy at all. My friends and I were so busy destroying the food that we almost forgot to chat. This place is so good, I may consider it for my last meal on Earth. Food was a wee bit pricey, but seriously, who cares. Recommended with great reverence.

Great lamb soup and skewers. This place is located in a strip mall you need to take the elevator up to the second floor. Unlike what other reviews say this isn't a food court it's a full service restaurant. We got the lamb soup with veges (you can also get noodles at no charge). Also comes with baked cakes / buns. Not like what I had in xian but still good. Their lamb skewers were great. Fatty and crispy and spiced with cumin. Pro tip - for the non Chinese speakers its marked as chicken gristle skewers on their menu (bad translation). The item on the menu called lamb skewers is not skewers haha. You need to order 10 minimum but they are easy to eat

I first came here for dinner after hearing about their leg of lamb with bone marrow (Stew Sauced Lamb Leg Bone). However, they ran out of that so I opted for one of their well known items as recommended by the server - Lamb Soup for one with Tripe Soup Base and Sugar Cake (Shaobing). Since then, I also tried their Lamb Skewers and Chicken Heart Skewers both at Medium Spice Level, their Stir Fried Diced Bone-in Lamb with Bay Leaf, and their Red Bean Shaobing. The shaobing was definitely a good surprise as they were very crispy and the sugar one stood out the most as it had an excellent level of sweetness and I was thankful that the server recommended this filling. It was something that I could just keep on eating. As for the lamb soup, it was very aromatic. It came with tripe, cabbage, glass vermicelli/noodles, green onion, cilantro, and a couple of wolfberries. The soup itself was very soothing as it was rich, had enough flavour, but not at all strong nor overwhelming. The tripe had a good flavour, was tender, but still had a nice chew to it. I am not a typical fan of glass noodles but it went really well with the soup as it brought out an umami flavour. The cabbage, green onion, and cilantro all added extra levels to the soup - crunch and refreshing flavour from the cabbage, and aromatic smell and flavour from the cilantro and green onions. In terms of the skewers, the lamb was very tender, juicy, and had a good spice level at medium. The chicken heart still had a bit of the organ metallic flavour but was tender, crunchy and juicy. Perhaps it would be better at Strong spice level. The stir fried lamb was crispy as it was nicely fried first, was flavourful with a nice level of spice to it, and included good pieces of lamb. Other than the food itself was the restaurant's decor and service. I really enjoyed the decor and atmosphere at the restaurant. Looking out the window on this second floor restaurant made it a lot more pleasant and calming (with the restaurant and table decoration and plating). Service was another highlight at the restaurant. The server was very friendly and welcoming. For me, she offered solutions to selecting spice level such as adding more spice after if needed (if it's not spicy enough) and suggesting that I may have ordered too much when I was leaning to ordering more. In general, she did not urge people to leave but rather offered another cup of tea and said that they should warm up fully before leaving. One of the notable things was that she brought out a cup for the delivery person too. Overall, the food, decor, and service made it a very immersive and enjoyable experience

Food was great. The spices on the meat is not over powered. We ordered the stinky tofu, that was new to us, it didn't have a "stinky" to it like a jar of shrimp paste would but still good.

I'd never heard of Shine Valley Lamb Soup before but a co-worker recommended it to me. It's a Northern Chinese restaurant that's located upstairs. We dropped in on a Sunday evening (around 6:00pm) and were able to get a table with no wait. Service isn't too shabby as they have a button to call a server over (to order, for more water, the bill, etc.). The main menu consists of cold dishes, lamb soup, signature dishes, hot, new, vegetable and staples. They also have a separate menu for skewers. If you order ahead of time, you can buy a whole roasted lamb for $666.00. - Cooked lamb meat in lamb soup ($43.99 large) - this comes with four cakes. Buns have a light, flaky texture but taste better when you dip them into the soup. The broth itself was homey and came with lamb, cabbage and thin clear noodles. - Stir-fried bone-in lamb meat ($19.99 small) - we opted for the spicy version (which it wasn't). Good chunks of meat and chewy bite. - Lamb meat stuffed dumplings ($13.99) - slightly thicker wrapping and solid filling. - Lamb skewer ($1.49 each) - standard fare. - Beef tenderloin skewer ($1.49 each) - tender and beefy. - Chicken heart ($1.25 each) - these were plump and juicy. - Chicken gristle skewer ($1.49 each) - not our favourite. All about the crunchy, cartilage texture. - Chicken gizzard ($1.25 each) - good texture. - Chinese lamb pie ($1.99 each) - these weren't the best. Way too greasy. Most interesting thing was that they looked like pupusas (Asian style). Come with a large group so that you can order more things. SVLS is all about the lamb goodness. 3.5 stars.

We have heard all the good things about this place and finally had the chance to try it out recently in one of the cold days. The Lamb soup with "Shāobng", baked cake, is one of the must-order set if you come to this store. The soup is so creamy and sweet which you can taste that naturally come from the lamb bone soup. It's not very heavy or over seasoning, very light but homey taste but warm your heart. The free baked cake is very nicely done with a very flaky outer layer and flavourful filling. (Btw, we get the "green onion and ham" flavour".) "Liangpi " the cold flat spicy noodle and Lamb shank also were good. Good value and taste for those two dishes. However, the skewers were not recommended unless if you just want some small bits. However, they are just not our taste. Overall, a good experience. The price range could be low or high depends on what you order. If you order lots of skewers then its easy to add up quickly and quite expensive.

Best lamb ever. This place is pretty good. Located inside a food court, this place looks legit the first time we saw it. As the name suggests, this place specializes in lamb dishes, and served only lamb dishes. After we ordered some lamb meat skewers, we saw order after order after order from this shop. In the span of 30 min, the shop next door had no orders, but this lamb meat shop had been pumping it orders non stop--there must have been 20 orders here comparee to 0 next door. When we got our meat skewers, we found out why. The meat is super tender, with a lot of spice, served hot, and the meat slides right off the wooden stick. This place knows what it's doing, and everyone seems to be in on it. Have to come back again!

This venue used to be in a food count but I guess they upgraded and transform themselves to a restaurant atmosphere. I went to this place with a friend of mine for lunch. On that day, we ordered the Lamb Soup Noodle, the Lamb dumpling and Cha egg. The Soup Noodle is good. The soup tasted good and it needs a bit of work in seasoning. However, the noodle was great, house-made and great in texture. The dumplings were great in taste and I like the texture of the dumpling lamb fillings. As for the Cha egg, it was a bit under-seasoned and it needed more time in the tea marinated. Overall, the dishes is good in taste but the chef need a bit of work on their menu.

Lamb leg. Well seasoned and very juicy.

Had the lamb leg and it was very juicy. The spice was awesome. Also I really enjoyed the soup.

Went to this restaurant this morning to have breakfast..but unfortunately they aren't doing breakfast anymore..so we waited an hour for their lunch We ordered the steamed bun stuffed with lamb, cooked lamb in lamb soup, specialty baked sesame cake..I would highly recommend the steamed bun stuffed with lamb!! The bun is so moist and the lamb tastes really good!! The lamb soup is great too..but if you are looking for a strong scent of lamb, i wouldn't recommend this since the lamb has already been cooking in the soup for some time..the scent of lamb doesn't taste as strong as the steamed bun. For the speciality baked cake, I wouldn't recommend it as it is really dry..will definitely try some other lamb dish next time definitely go for their steamed buns!!

I didn't realize it was a chain with three locations in Metro Vancouver. We entered and the place was moderately busy. We were seated immediately. Rather typical looking restaurant but it was clean. Despite not liking fresh durian , I don't mind eating this. Outer layer is crisp and not too thick. - Rice Noodle with Tomato Broth: Good. Comes still boiling. Decent size, variety of toppings and a slightly thicker broth than most. Rice noodles are a bit soggy, but being all you can eat rice noodles is a nice feature for big eaters. - Yang's Chicken Rice Boneless: Good. Also comes boiling. Chicken is tender, and mushrooms have intense flavour. Service is minimal, but helpful. Overall, we were happy with our food as it was good, fast, and affordable. Not something I would crave, but a reliable option if I'm in the area again

We got in just before the dinner rush so were seated right away at the last open table. This place is a legend in itself, since their original location. Shanghainese place. We ordered: hot + sour soup - solid 4/5. Could use more heat but I like the level of acidity and they were generous with the veg/shrimp in it. Add some chili oil and you're good. XLB - theirs are big, and thin skin but still holds up well. Theres an aunty standing behind the counter making them nonstop. We got the regular pork ones and they were great. Absolutely loaded with soup (seriously, most soup in xlb ive seen in a long time) and the pork filling was nice and juicy. 5/5. shen jian bao - a lot less dense than most versions. Still quite light, and the bottom was nice and crispy. Filling was the same as the xlb. Also loaded with soup. This might be my fav version of this dish. 5/5. sauerkraut fish soup with noodles - I think this was made to cater to a more canto crowd, and I like it. Its lighter, much less greasy, and much less salty. Fish slices were cooked to perfection, still with some bite and not mushy. The purists may not like it but you can eat a lot of this and not feel sick. Could use more of the pickled greens though. 4/5. Total bill was $65 + tax and tip for 2 ppl, and we took home enough food for 1 meal. The restaurant itself is utilitarian. clean, somewhat modern and comfortable enough. There are some big screens showing stuff on TV. You can order with the waitress or use the QR code and order from your phone. Cash or debit only. Come here for no frills, high-value shanghainese food that is surprisingly light. Definitely recommend. Theyve been around for a long time for good reason.

Keep in mind they won't seat you unless your entire party has arrived. The total came to less than $30 per person, which is great value for money in Vancouver. While the xiao long bao and sheng jian bao were definitely the highlights of our lunch, I enjoyed all of the dishes. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for Shanghai cuisine in Vancouver. Xiao Long Bao ($9.25) Even with my questionable chopstick skills, the wrapper didn't break at all, which shows how well they're made. The broth was flavorful, with plenty of meat inside. I just wish the dipping sauce had a stronger ginger profile. Pan-Fried Pork Dumplings / Sheng Jian Bao ($8.50) Crispy on the bottom with a fluffy top. Interestingly, they have the same soup filling as the xiao long bao. Meat & Vegetable Wonton in Peanut Sauce ($12.95)This was the only dish I've never had in Shanghai (my friend told me it's commonly served in the summer, when soup dumplings would be too hot). Wine Chicken ($15.95)It was cute how they served this dish in a tall pot. It looks small, but there's actually a decent amount of tender chicken inside. Fragrant without being overwhelming. Crispy Rice with Salted Egg Sauce ($21.95)The flavor profile reminded me of Singaporean-style salted egg fried chicken (which sadly doesn't seem to exist in Vancouver). The crunchiness adds a nice balance to all the dumpling dishes we had.

Fully expected the sweet one to be better but it turned out to be the opposite at this place. The savory one was better. The sweet one was actually quite bland. It was not enjoyable at all. Come here for the dumplings. Don't bother ordering anything other than dumplings though. Stick to their namesake yummy dumplings. The tofu was a huge serving too. Especially the sweet one. The cold sweet one you just grab it yourself from the fridge. It's a huge container. We were 5 people. Between the 5 of us we had one order of meat dumplings, one order of Vegetarian dumplings, one order of sweet tofu pudding and one order of savory tofu pudding. We didn't even finish the tofu pudding and we were all soooo full. Should have just ordered one savory hot tofu pudding and left it at that. Oh, you're supposed to place your order at one of those electronic kiosks. Make sure at least one person in your party is comfortable with that kind of ordering system! Service: Fair (It helps if someone in your party understands Mandarin!) Parking: Plentiful and free

However, I was a bit disappointed but not too much as prices were decent depending on what you get. We got the chicken laksa, Nasi goreng, Mongolian chicken, and kuih lapis. Chicken laksa is the ideal order as the soup is decent and the pricing is fair. It is not the best as the soup didn't carry much flavor and the noodles were a bit on the softer side. It was filling however. Nasi goreng is solid. The vegetables felt frozen reheated and wilted, but at least the cucumbers were fresh. The amount of shrimp, squid, and fish cakes was dismal. Flavor profile is good. The Mongolian chicken is okay. It's not fried as the batter is quite soft. It is saucy which my friends were craving. I enjoyed the flavor profile of this one though. The dessert is good. Kuih Lapis is a colorful dessert so it appealed to me in both taste and presentation. One red flag I noticed is that I heard beep after beep of microwave sounds. It's as if all the dishes they prepared well in advance and just reheat for us, plus they walled off the kitchen and the back completely, giving the impression that they want to hide something. Most renowned places won't hide the back like that, as you can at least take a peek of what's cooking behind the scenes in most places. Service is good as they refill complimentary tea throughout our dining experience. Pay at the front for the bill.
