My wife and I have driven past this restaurant several times and wondered about it, but it took us about a year to finally try it out for date night. Last second and we didn't have any reservations. Luckily the high top tables and bar area had openings for walk in's. We both really enjoy good sushi and have tried a lot of places, so we weren't sure what quality we were going to get. Quick, nice, and attentive service from the waiter. He made me a custom drink based on what I like and my wife ordered off the menu. Both drinks were excellent and the drink menu had a lot of options I'd want to try in the future. For appetizers, we had the vegetable egg rolls and a beef plate. Both were great! We ordered 5 speciality sushi rolls. As you can see from the picture, we couldn't wait to take a picture first and dug in right away. Every roll had a really good range of flavors and taste. Fresh. I've been a long time fan of Shintos back when the opened in Strongsville. This visit was amazing!!! It was packed at the hibachi tables so the manager John brought us to an amazing booth where he attended to absolutely every whim, need and request. He went above and beyond in every aspect. I've never had a bad Shintos dish, but John made every dish special. He even got me a dish that wasn't on the menu anymore. Reinvented my martini over and over until it was just right. No point in getting a reservation, you're not going to get sat at that time anyways. Food is good, what you'd expect for hibachi. Just could not stand waiting in the packed lobby area for almost an hour after the time we had put in a reservation for. We had reserved hibachi but ended up asking for a regular table because it took so long for us to be sat. Once we got to the table, the waitress went by us four or five times, saying "I'll be with you guys in a minute" every time. Last year after a hungover night and fight with the lady, we decided to walk over from our dingy little motel that's next door. Holy guacamole Batman we were absolutely taken by surprise! Thought it was just another run of the mill Japanese steakhouse at first glance, but we were absolutely blown away by the Hott Karl Witha K Roll. Like geez that was amazing. Some guy (manager) kind of creepily came up to us last year and inquired about us having an air fryer or not. I said yes and then he proceeded to give me instructions on reheating the roll... wow it was even better the next day when I heated it back up. Anyways here we are AGAIN about a year later and it is exactly like we remember. We got 4 rolls and not one of them disappointed. I should also say that we came on a Saturday night DURING dinner rush, and we were seated fairly quickly. We also did not get Hibachi which would potentially warrant a wait. This was our second visit to Shinto. We loved it the first time and it certainly didn't disappoint this time. The young man we had as our server was very welcoming and very attentive, without being annoying. We ordered the Miso Surprise sushi roll as our starter. It was SUPER TASTY!!!! My husband had the Tuna Poke Bowl and I had the Steak and Shrimp Combination plate for our entrees. Both were delicious!!! And each entree has a very generous amount of food! What happened to Shinto?? The service while sitting at the bar was absolutely terrible. With two bartenders working, it took over 10 minutes to be greeted without a full bar. 18mins total for a drink and order to be taken. Me and a couple other customers were talking about the service and they said it's gone down a lot and in the past. They've been happy with the guy bartender who typically works on Thursdays I guess. Glasses and plates left all over the bar, no checking in to see how the meal is, they just look like two deer and headlights. The guy next to me told me how they messed up his order as well. Unfortunately, we overheard the one woman saying that she's a manager. Yikes.. I guess it makes sense why happy hour there isn't even a full bar. Ordered takeout for my girlfriend, and I and specifically mentioned that they make the cali roll and the Philly roll as gluten free, since she has a gluten allergy. The hostess said okay, and made no mention that they could not accommodate this request. Upon picking up the order I confirmed again that the order was gluten free and was told yes. After arriving home, I noticed that they did not separate her sushi rolls from mine except for a piece of lettuce divider down the middle which was comical and she had immation crab in her cali roll which contains gluten. My girlfriend ended up talking to the manager and she mentioned that they cannot make the cali roll gluten free as they have nothing to substitute the imitation crab with. More concerning was that the hostess just marked that all rolls were to be made gluten free, and didn't inform me that couldn't be done anyway and that the kitchen just fulfilled the order. Went with another couple for their 25th wedding anniversary. We sat in a cozy booth. We had two servers. Worst food and service ever. We ordered an appetizer for the table ($32). Ahi tuna was inedible. It tasted and looked old. Beef Mamanaki was inedible. Tempura was tasteless. Then husband and I ordered gyoza, fried rice and a shrimp cocktail. Gyoza was ok, couldn't eat the shrimp because it was rubbery and looked freezer burnt. Never received the fried rice. Friend ordered beef filet dinner from the gluten free menu. When it was served we asked if it was gluten free. She said she didn't know. Didn't matter. The filet was tuff and gristly. Had to find server to order more drinks. Flavorful and spicy dipping sauce Spicy tuna roll was excellent and had great flavor. I didn't like the spicy salmon roll. It wasn't spicy (it was supposed to have spicy mayo and sriracha but I think they forgot) and a couple of the salmon pieces had a faded color and were chewier than I would like. The Jimmy #30 (shrimp tempura, cream cheese, spicy mayo etc) was good. It was a heavier, "loaded" roll- very large portion with a nice light spice to it. The place was packed. Came here to celebrate a birthday and the ambiance was great! What really made the meal memorable for us was our waiter. He was so full of energy and went above and beyond to make our friend feel special for her birthday. We ordered the sushi platter, sashimi platter, and Shinto appetizer platter to share. The presentation of each dish was very eye-catching and well put together. The sashimi was fresh and the sushi was great--quality of the fish had a good bite to it. Sashimi that is not fresh is usually sort it chewy and a bit slimy. If you're like me and like to try a little bit of everything, their Shinto appetizer platter is for you. It's mostly made up of their deep fried appetizer selections, but it was nice to have the variety. I would recommend making reservations here whether you're here for regular dinner or their hibachi dinner. You may be able to get away with no reservations for their regular dinner, but you definitely need one for hibachi. They were fully booked for hibachi and it was a weekday that we went! Everything was late soup, Salad,& appetizer had to be asked for. The chef was boring. Almost no fun at all. One of the customers spit up sake that was being shot into his mouth by the chef, and it went all over the food on the cooking surface. He continued to cook and served it. Unbelievable. The seafood was the worst i've ever tasted and was not palatable. I called the manager the next day because three out of four people got sick. Maybe it was because of what we saw when the customer seated with us spit all over the food. Also the manager never returned my call. We got fried rice first. Had to pay extra for fried rice? At these prices it should be included. Can't recall if there was anything in rice other than soy egg and maybe a few vegetables. Other places put garlic amd chicken Oh well. I ordered my filet medium. When the chef served it, it was rare and not seared at all. He moved the meat around as if it made it cook. He needed to let it cook first them cut it! The vegetables were last served and were hard. No water and cover that many use on top to help cook them. Oh, the chef didnt count right on the shrimp and had to go back to kitchen to get more. Pretty much our shrimp came as desert. :( The chef made no attempt to do the fumny little things we always expect. Build the volcano. Blow a whistle. Shoot saki etc etc. The chef at the next table was lively and fun and did the whole show. Our guy was just not interested. One last point. May be minor to some, but I love Hibachi, so it is not. So many other hibachi places offer a mustard sauce. At these prices, I would hope they would go beyond the yumyum and ginger sauce offering. Even if you charged us $2. Ugh! A ton of money for horrible service. I feel bad for the hibachi chefs. Our chef was fantastic, our server (Blake) the worst I've had in a long time! My husband's beer came half way through dinner. My Imperial Flight also waiting only to find out they were out. Changed to the Samurai Flight took an additional 15 minutes. Meal completely served... no white rice received for my daughter yet either at this point. We're seriously in a Japanese restaurant. I'm sure white rice is absolutely readily available. My daughter is almost in tears as we're finishing up our meals and she has just a couple pieces of chicken on her plate. This child wanted to try eating with chopsticks... guess what... everyone else is done with our meals and still didn't receive any chopsticks that we asked for. Finally asked another server and he immediately pulled them out of his apron saying every server should have some in their apron. Blake could tell I was getting angry 30 minutes into our meal with no beer or sake flights or white rice. Thought well... when we get our bill maybe he'll try to compensate in some way. Nope! $172 and what an effort it was to even get served. Thursday night, not crazy busy just a horrible server who I'm sure will bitch he got a bad tip but honestly he shouldn't have received what he even got.
