Ok I'm being generous with 4 stars. This place is pretty good. Whoever was doing the seating the night we were eating had no clue what they were doing. But ok they have a nice little bar so not a big deal. Fun drinks on special. I wanted a steak and luckily they were doing a filet mignon special that night. It came with foie gras which I still feel guilty about. I ordered rare. It came out med rare so make sure to emphasize RARE if you are a stickler. I thought it was good anyway. The lobster mashed potatoes were yummy but I think would've been better without the lobster strangely enough. My friend is veg and he didn't have a ton of options but seemed happy with his mashed potatoes and salad ( the one with feta). Definitely a tiny salad but really good. Anyway everything came fast. As it turned out they were waiting for our table to seat a large party so we were awkwardly asked to move at the very end. I'm not sure why they had the place settings next to eachother instead of across! The party could have easily been sitting there the whole time. Although probably for the best since they were all wasted. As a weekend visitor I don't think I'd be back - lots of other places to check out. But a good choice for a decent steak dinner. read more

I like The Ship. I was here in early September for dinner with a friend. I have been many times before, as well. They serve decent, consistent food that I enjoy. But here's what I don't enjoy: The tiny, tiny two tops and the chairs! The two tops make you feel super squashed. On my last trip the waiter did not remove my empty cocktail glass (kind of annoying) but because of the tiny table it felt unbearable to me! It was a cooper mule mug so he probably didn't realize it was empty. Now the chairs...just simply awful! So uncomfortable! Please, please, please upgrade. I would go more often if I didn't dread the chairs so much. I had the lobster ravioli which were tasty. The lobster was slightly over. The mule was good. The creme brûlée was good but not anywhere near the best I've ever had. All in all, this is a consistently good restaurant that I recommend. read more

This place has gone way down hill. Firstly it's very over priced, and I don't mind if the food is beyond phenomenal but I could cook better than this place. The main dishes don't come with sides you have to pay extra for that too. The past two times we have been exceptionally disappointed. Wow. I repeat, wow. Happened to be in Kingston for the night with friends, and being from the NYC area we were all worried we'd have to settle for some mediocre pub food... we were dead wrong. First of all Kingston is cutest little town on the river with quite a few dining options. Ship to Shore came highly recommended from some locals we ran into, and the reviews were good, so we gave it a go. Again, wow. The food is absolutely exquisite. The halibut tacos with pineapple salsa as an appetizer... so flavorful & fresh. My friend had an appetizer salad with the most amazing thick-cut bacon.. out of this world. The steaks- better than some major steakhouses we've been to. There were four of us, we each had something different, but tried each others & were all SO IMPRESSED. The sides are huge & tasty. The seasonal mushrooms literally changed my life...all mushrooms will now pale in comparison to their perfection. Tender, moist, flavorful steaks. Exciting and delicious sauces to accompany the steaks. An excellent cocktail and wine selection. The cucumber gin drink was so refreshing & unexpected. The service? Equally as impressive. They really set themselves apart. The bartender was SO friendly upon our arrival. We waited five minutes for a table to be set up for us, and she was so welcoming & social. She made our drinks perfectly & chatted with us about some local spots for drinks, and that really set the tone for the rest of the night. Our waiter (who's name I can't believe I forgot) was excellent. He took such great care of us, timing was perfect and we never waited for drinks/refills. He was knowledgeable, and even understanding towards the end of the dinner when our laughter became a bit on the loud side. We just had such a great experience there! Beautiful, charming little place with a flare of contemporary sophistication. Great ambience. Definitely not what we expected in Kingston. We are already thinking of excuses to spend a weekend in Kingston so we could come back. Today I took my son to Ol Savannah. Home from college from NYC for a few days. We always hit up Your restaurant. Give five stars. But heard about A raw seafood platter st Ol Savannah and decided To try. First the drinks. When my son is home only The best. Bloody Mary's Lunch OS. Terrible Too Hot and a Spicy. Asked if could add V8 Or tomatoe juice. Don't have. Uhhh. Ok Ship to Shore waiter did. Perfect. Ok. Now got The platter. Awful. Oysters the size of quarters and Clams the size of dimes. Who heard of a chipotle cocktail sauce? So spicy had to add ketchup. The mussels were the size of my fingernail and get this. Put on ice with frozen butter Garlic sauce. Lol. Really? And then platters to come with a half of lobster tail. Sorry out of lobster Want extra something. OMG. 40 each. What Kind of restaurant is this. I have to say there is not one time I went to Your restaurant I got the utmost Service and food in Kingston. Thank you for a restaurant who delivers and will do anything for their customers. I love seafood and have been meaning to try this restaurant for a while. Before going there for dinner, my husband and I recently decided to try their Sunday Brunch. He looked up their hours on their website, and it said brunch until 3 PM. Well, we got there just after 2 PM and the waiter said that they were on their Dinner menu! Not even Lunch menu (which is also until 3 PM), but Dinner menu, on Sunday afternoon. I recognized his ploy immediately, but I have to say I was surprised. I've sometimes received this kind of attitude in NYC, when I'm under-dressed, but that was in the 90's when many restaurants purposefully acted this way. I didn't expect this in Kingston! I looked around and saw 2 tables occupied, one a table of 2 and another table of 6. They were all dressed in business casual. My husband and I were decidedly more casual. I politely asked to see the Dinner menu - I wanted to see what kind pricing they had that they didn't think we could afford. Their most expensive entree was just over $30, no more than most restaurants we frequent around the Hudson Valley. By this point, my husband is a bit upset and insistent with the waiter, especially because he knew that I was annoyed and hungry. He explained to them that their website says Brunch until 3 PM and that we drove here specifically for brunch. Then another waiter came over and told us that they've changed their Brunch hours and that it hasn't been updated on their website. A few years ago, I would have been furious for such stupid discrimination and snobbery, but I was actually amused and touched by their sad, pathetic effort to keep out 2 new customers to protect their restaurant. My husband saw, as we were leaving, a sign on their door advertising Sunday Brunch until 3 PM. Of course, their website still says brunch until 3 PM. And I see that they serve lunch, everyday, until 3 PM also. We went somewhere else and had a wonderful brunch. I'll just have to find another place for some classic surf & turf. read more

I'm writing this message in displeasure of my experience at Ship to Shore this past weekend. I have been a loyal local patron of the restaurant for over 17 years, and in fact, even had my rehearsal dinner there in 2011. As you can imagine, I take pleasure on a regular basis in promoting the restaurant. This past weekend, I was very unhappy and surprised with the experience I had. Upon arrival, my table, which I had an 8pm reservation for, was not ready, and we were offered to wait at the bar until it became available, which we did. When we sat at the bar, it was wet, from just being wiped, so I proceeded to dry it off myself with some paper napkins. The bartender noticed what I was doing, and promptly took the napkins from me and apologized; he appeared quite busy. I was interested in ordering a bottle of wine, and therefore requested to taste several different kinds of wine, none of which i was fond of. I asked if the bartender could make a suggestion for a dry white wine, to which he responded to being unfamiliar with many of the wines on the menu, but stated that he did not think any of them were too dry. I ended up ordering a nixed drink. When our table was ready, we asked to have our bar check transferred to our table check, to which we were told we had to close out at the bar. This was an odd request, as we had never done this in the past, at any restaurant we have been to. We closed it, and were then asked to bring our drinks with us to the table, again an odd request, since all previous experiences have involved our server bringing them to the table for us. After sitting, we were given menus and greeted by our server, who seemed polite and attentive at first. However, we ordered our appetizer, salad and entrees, but were never given bread, until we asked for it at the end of our appetizer course. We received our BLT Caesar, which as you are aware is served with a thick piece of bacon atop. I had to ask for a steak knife to cut it, as one was not provided initially. After the salad was cleared the table was crumby, but was never crumed, until asked. When we finally received our entrees, we overheard the table next to us being offered wine specials, one of which was described to be a dry white! As you can imagine, I was upset, as I was told there wasnt a really dry white available, and we were never even offered the speacials! I asked the server why we weren't told about these specials, and he apologized and asked if we wanted it now... obviously we weren't going to order the bottle at that point. I ordered a scallop entree which the kitchen made special for me, as I only wanted scallops. When they came out, they were very salty, in a plain brown gravy; while I appreciated the special request being honored, I expected a little higher quality than I recived. All in all, I was very dissappointed with the experience, and didn't want to complain in front of my friend, as I didnt want to embarrass them. My friend and I spent over $150 at the restaurant this night, and I can not attest that it was worth it. I would greatly appreciate you looking into this, and rectifying this situation, as I would like to remain a loyal customer, and pass that along to others. I also want to add that I attempted to contact the restaurant via email and facebook immediately following the incident, however 3 days later I still had not received a response. I worked in the restaurant business for several years, and I am aware of what good customer service is, this was by far sub-par. read more

Tried this restaurant twice because of the great reviews and it was terrible both times. The first time we got a steak and a burger, both were dry and tasteless. The foie gras burger was a thick patty that looked like it had been boiled and it was tough, dry and tasteless - much like the bun! The next time we went for lunch. I got the foie gras appetizer. It looked and seemed like a piece of calf liver that was only partially cooked since when I cut into it, it spilled red and runny across the plate. For the main course, I had a salad and my husband had pasta. Both were decent but so small they could have been a appetizer (or less) - really, my husband's was about five bites without any exaggeration! At those prices, we expected more. I have eaten here many times over the last 6 years....My warning to you now....don't do... it go somewhere else...Hoffman house etc..Kingston has more to restaurants that truly care about the quality of the dishes at this price point.... at one time, ship to shore had a quality chef in the kitchen...no more...just workers in the kitchen.....now the food quality is poor. This is the Second year going to ship to shore at the Hooley festival. Adam our waiter, was excellent. So was the food. He recommended the tuna stack and it was one of the best appetizers I have ever had. The rest of the food was also excellent. I had fish and chips, which not your standard Fish and chips. It was a broiled fish with homemade potato chips. An interesting twist. Ship to shore is a restaurant that might require a visit outside of the Hooley festival. I highly recommend it. read more

Our main objection on this last visit was the ambience. Felt more like a beer hall than fine dining. Music was WAY too loud, tables seemed slap-dash placed around the room. This is definately one of my favorite places to eat. The entire staff is very friendly and can always help to suggest a wonderful wine to pair with dinner. Monday burger and brew is the tops! Choose any one of their awesome burgers and get 3 pints of tap beer for $20 bucks! How sweet is that?! Favorite appetizer is the tuna stackers. Tuna is sear to perfection. Warning, it's spicy and awesome! At the bar, they make their own pineapple infused vodka. With that, they make pineapple cosmopolitan's. Now I'm more of a beer fan, but I tried one and it was like liquid crack! You are instantly hooked and just can't get enough. Make sure you have a DD to drive you home. Over all, it's a wonderful place with great food and great people. I can honestly say that I have never had a bad experience here nor has any of my friends. I'm a regular here and always enjoy my dining experience. Fyi, keep an eye out for their 5 course wine pairings. It's an fantastic deal and you won't be disappointed. My experience at Ship to Shore was not great I called for reservations stating it was my wife's birthday and requested a table that would be quiet and lad back , this was for a family of 4, we got there and were put in the bar area which was very loud, our waitress was good the food was OK not what I was lead to believe 5 stars, then at the very end a big waiter came walking towards our table at full speed and smashed the chair into my knee, I let out a loud ouch! and all he said as he keep walking by was sorry. I limped out of there and I will never return. He could of at least offer the table a round of drinks at the very least be more sincere about what he did. read more

I've been a regular for a few years and have always been pleased but lately this establishment seems to be off. First hand, service was always very good but the last three visits was very poor. There is certainly less wait staff and unfortunately they kept the wrong guy. Yesterday we tried their special Valentines Sunday Brunch which included a choice of one item on the list, all were very boring and all you could drink Bloody Mary or Mimosa. How can an established chef allow a premix, is it really that much work to whip a batch of Bloody Mary from scratch? They were terrible. The food was decent but sparse, certainly not worth the ride. The french fries were soggy noodles. No substitutions were permitted and the regular menu was off limits, typically I order the tuna stack appetizer which is wonderful. I won't do another special menu event. Last week for lunch the crab salad was exceptionally bland, if the waiter would have given a little time to his customer base rather then his own personal problems I would have sent it back. As for atmosphere it's getting pretty tired, yesterday it was down right cold and there's a moist mildewy smell towards the back of the restaurant. Decor is circa 80s rough. I'll hold off a couple of months and give it another chance if not just for the Tuna Stack. read more

Wandered into this place on a whim while driving home from Woodstock. Food was outstanding. Vegetables were all super fresh from the local farm. Our waiter Adam was very knowledgeable about the many questions we had about how the foods were prepared. He also gave us a brief history of the town as an added bonus. We used Ship to Shore as our caterer for our wedding. I don't know how many people hire a caterer for their wedding and can say that the staff set the tone for an amazingly perfect and flawless evening and that is separate from the food that people will not stop talking about. Samir and his staff helped to create a perfect wedding which was last night and I couldn't wait a week to share. We wanted an unconventional event, rather than a formal sit down dinner where people stopped dancing to eat or a buffet, I wanted the music to keep going and people eat courses throughout the night. Samir was right there with us in creating an amazingly fun, delicious meal that had various stations throughout the evening which he cooked outside in front of our guests, serving fresh food in a fun setting that was unbelievably good. As we were cutting the cake (literally) my husband turned to me and asked if I tasted the beet salad. Today people are still talking about it (sadly as the bride, as much as his staff tried to get me to eat, I didn't taste it all but my husband who is a foodie did and won't stop raving. So if you are looking for delicious food (which is not easy to pull off at a wedding), Samir is the man. More important to me and difficult to find in catering is how the staff treats the guests and attitude throughout the evening. I am picky about service, in my younger days I worked in catering for years and I have been to enough events at which the staff stands aimlessly around and gives you the impression that they are completely bored to be there and counting down the clock. Not this crew. From the get go, some staff members came a few days earlier to get the lay of the land, I knew they cared just as much about making our day perfect as much as we did. I knew we were in good hands. They were warm, supportive of my suggestions (and I had a few), ridiculously friendly , upbeat and doing everything to make it a magical evening not just for us but the guests. Our friends and family were impressed with the quality of their presentation and professionalism. I have a million more wonderful things to say about Samir, the food and staff but you get the idea. If you want great food and service, Samir and Ship to Shore should be your choice. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for everything. read more

We live on the strand and this is def our go to place. Out of all of the options its the most consistent. Everyone seems to make a big deal about savonas but this is way way better. The drinks are great and the food is always tasty. The service can be spotty- the first time we went it came out ridiculously fast, but there have also been times were it seemed to take forever just to get some bread. Absolutely horrible experience! Wait staff was excellent, however management's total lack of flexibility is inexcusable. If your dish on the menu is served with rice, for example and you'd prefer potatoes. NO! I dine out quite frequently, and know of no other restaurant with such absurd menu conditions. I had dropped this restaurant several years ago for this very reason, but thought I'd give it another try. Hopeless. In speaking to the wait staff I found that they were intimidated and would get screamed at if they even suggested in the kitchen that a substitution might be in order. When I spoke to the maître d' regarding something as simple as swapping one veggie for another, his response ... "then dine elsewhere". With so many great restaurant offerings in the Kingston area, I would suggest others take his advise. read more

Consistent high quality of food and service. Just got an email that starting March 30th they are back to 7 days a week for dinner and resuming lunch April 1st. That way you don't have to think about it -- just go! Love the salads in the Spring and Summer and brunches on the weekends are a guilty pleasure!
