This is my all-time favorite coffee place ever!!!!! Local, handmade, organic, and delicious! Shirlee is pure joy and light!!!! I have honestly gone in just for a hug; I always leave her shop happier than when I went in. I love Hammerhead Coffee Roasters and Shirlee's blend is delicious! Whenever I'm not in the mood for coffee she has a lovely assortment of teas from Wonderland. My favorite pastries she makes are anything with berries, maple, or cardamom; everything is delicious, you can't go wrong! And why stop at coffee and pastries when you can also have breakfast, paninis, or curry! If you haven't been to Shirlee's yet then you must! The quirky and inventive decor, the heavenly smell of baked goods constantly coming out of the oven, and warm conversation with the owner. The bearded man and I found the Shirlee Bird on Yelp. The restaurant is tiny, but the good energy looms large. We loved the friendly owner and will visit again. We had perfect cafe au laits (I wanted to write "cafe ole" like the bullfighting cheer) and I had a satisfying croissandwich (that is not what it is called on the menu). SO delicious! Small, one woman operation in an 1800's building. I had the Monte Cristo on sour dough - ham, turkey, fontina cheese, with chutney! Oh, the chutney! I was a very boring breakfast companion as I found it necessary to exclaim over every bite! Coffee and tea were both very very hot, an appreciated feature as that is so seldom the case in restaurants. The owner's interaction with each customer is a delight. Happened upon this adorable coffee shop (thank you, Yelp) after taking the train from Seattle to Bellingham and am so grateful we did! The woman who owns the cafe (I wish we'd gotten her name) was an absolute delight and one of those people whose vision and energy is utterly contagious. She gets in at 4am to bake pastries (4 at a time in their tiny convection oven) and I have to say, the pastries are worth the drive from Seattle, alone. We got the raspberry turnover and the bear claw and I genuinely wish why'd just bought the lot. The cafe is also adorable in its own right, set in a historic building from the late 1800s, complete with personalized touches and games from the owner's home and childhood. A worthwhile stop, no matter your length of stay in Bellingham. read more

This was very alarming at first sight. It was a very interesting venue, but the shop itself was pretty crammed. The food was great! There was one employee at the time, and it was farely busy. She did a great job handling the customers, and also making the food. Sure, it was a pretty slow order, but then again it was one employee, but she was very calm and handled everything very well. We don't come around here often, but if we do, the we might just have to stop in here again. read more

Wonderful coffee, wonderful food, wonderful owner. My favorite place to grab an awesome sandwich or pastry and work on some homework. Shirlee makes a mean macchiato. My personal favorite is the Curried Chicken Sandwich. Shirlee really cares about where her ingredients come from and the quality of her food. She knows all of her regulars by name and cares about how her customers are doing. I don't just come here for the awesome food, but also for the awesome company. Wow, waiting in line was fun because the conversation was interesting. We have eavesdropped on everyone from farmers, planning commissioner candidates to network installers. And the coffee is fine. Yes, the woman behind the counter in the morning is likely to be vivacious and outgoing Shirlee herself and if she isn't as hip and cool a chick as can be found in B'ham she runs a close second. This woman is completely energized and might be reason enough to patronize this establishment, but her pastries with berries and cheese and tart lemon sauce and almond paste and good coffee perhaps even outdo her. Other reviews describe the cafe accurately as well as the personality of the owner - good vibes abound - but she is also an accomplished and proud professional. Seating in the interior atrium of the historic Sycamore Building is not ever going to be an intimate setting, but my wife and I - elderly customers- will continue to stop here on our way to Vancouver for this little piece of magic in Fairhaven. read more

This cute little place in Fairhaven has delicious coffee, pastries, sandwiches and salads. The owner is super friendly and the servers are always pleasant. You can eat in the indoor courtyard if all the tables are taken in the cafe.The only drawback is sometimes around lunchtime it gets busy so there's a bit of a wait. I stopped in to have breakfast having left another cafe that smelled of everything it had ever served. This wonderful woman served me a delicious Monte Cristo, a large Americano and some great conversation about life. With a counter of delicious looking pastries starring at me the whole it, I exhausted all my willpower for the entire day just resisting those. I won!.. Instead I had a wonderful glass of a local kombucha to top off my meal. Paid my bill and left her an extra 5 just because. Nice to have these moments with good people and good food that aren't mean to ever be repeated. It is what it is. I'm grateful. read more

Visiting from out of town. Just needed a good drink and treat. Only one wonderful woman working with a bunch of people in line. There was a woman who all of a sudden got passive aggressive about not getting her food in 3 minutes and she handled it amazingly. Have a free pasty, acted maturely, and didn't get pushed around. Found this awesome little place in the Fairhaven area. If you are expecting a sit down place with lots of options, you will be disappointed. However, if you are looking for an exceptional cup of coffee and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, this is the place. They have fresh made pastries and a killer breakfast burrito panini (lunch paninis looked amazing as well). Wonderfully eclectic with a super friendly owner/operator. I've been here twice now, and both times the coffee has been great and the barista (owner?) has been wonderful to talk with. The cafe itself is a little small so seating is limited, but that being said, you can always grab your coffee and wander the floors of Sycamore Square (which is easily one of the coolest buildings in Fairhaven). Overall I would say this place is worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

not the place to zip in for a super fast coffee to go but the food, beverages, and staff are exceptional when you want a bit of a break. I'm neither a big coffee nor pastry guy but... this is THE place i take someone when those are the desire. my friend from London pronounced his macchiato "so beautiful i can't drink it" but drank it anyway and enjoyed every drop! a foodie friend from Vancouver declared the chocolate croissant (the best i've ever eaten!)
