i'm having difficulty choosing a rating for this restaurant. while we love their food, the service and food requests are spotty and we never know what we're going to get. the pros are that if we sit at the sushi bar, we have amazing service by all - all the time. the sushi chefs are so welcoming and we love them dearly (especially the veteran chefs that have been there for several years). We also look forward to having Yoshi as our server while dining at the bar. He is great and has such a kind warmth about him. we just love the guy! the cons are, that if we order anything from the grill, the chefs in the kitchen do not realize that when i ask my teppan steak as "well done", i really do mean that i want it "well done". more often than not i have to send it back due to it still being pink inside. ...also, the few times we have decided to dine at the "show", we have had mixed reviews of our chefs. we could not stand Cesar. ..when i asked him to cook my steak "extremely well done", he stated in exact words "we'll see what we can do for you, mama". ..."mama"... that was strange. i then asked if he would butterfly my steak before he cuts into pieces. again, he stated "we'll see what we can do for you, mama". my husband and i just looked at each other, baffled. ..and he never did butterfly my steak. he then proceeded to mention that he gets many requests from customers wanting him as their chef, but he then added that he expects a good tip if people ask for him exclusively. my husband and i are just sitting there, highly uncomfortable as this point, not knowing how to take this guy. it was a strange experience that entire evening. well, another night, we decided to dine at the "show" again, but upon check-in, we made it clear to the hostess and restaurant manager (who was coincidentally standing at the check-in counter) that we did NOT want Cesar as our chef. the manager did not bother to ask why and we never gave our reasons why either. ...so once we sat down, the very kind waitress took our order, but then a few minutes later, guess who comes walking over to our grill. crap. what the hell. ... my husband gets up and talks again to the manager again. the manager basically brushed my husband off with no apologies. but they did end up moving Cesar and we end up with a good chef that didn't refer to me as "mama" and never mentioned how much "tip he expected from the customers", so it was a much more pleasant experience. i really want to give a higher rating, but i cannot until things get bit better here. until then, my 3 stars stand strong. read more

His solution for my party of seven not being over crowed with randoms people was ....wait for another table then were gunna sit another couple with you anyway. Really rude manager arguing for no reason it was a simple question .They clearly offered other customers room in there tables ... This is the place to go when you are in the area and want some good quality sushi at an affordable price. One of the good things is that they have a huge choice of vegetarian items so that those who don't eat fish can eat here too. The teppan part is good for families and groups and if you have little ones they will enjoy the show put on by the chefs read more

Went here for a birthday party last night with a large group we had 3 tables. The service was great hence the 2 stars however the food not so good. I ordered the steak & colossal shrimp with the fried rice. Fried rice didn't have a lot of flavor nor did it have added chicken which I'm used to from Tokyo Wako, not worth the extra $2.99! The steak was not so flavorful either, I got the New York. Now the shrimp was even worse, they don't clean the shrimp completely, which was very visible being that I ordered the larger shrimp. The long black string was very visible which the cook & waitress kinda argued with me about, they finally took them back to be fully cleaned. When cooked they tasted dirty which 2 other people at my table said the same. I happened to notice the table next to us and shrimp (smaller ones) they too were not cleaned. So excited to eat here this evening after a long while. Much to our dismay, we were disappointed with food and service this time. No more fire show so who knows what happened to discontinue the tradition. We've been coming to Shoguns for over 25 years. Is it new management, staff or a lack of understanding as to how to provide customer service. Initially things were okay but then our water was never refilled, food salty, and the wine I ordered to go with my steak never came until the end so I refused it. To go boxes were provided but no longer the service of boxing your food. You have to do it and nothing to put it in either. No apology, no smile and, unfortunately, will not be returning anytime soon. For just over $300, I do expect quality and excellent service. read more

I have eaten here several times and each time I have eaten here the service was below par. That wasn't the worse of it. The cooks and what they think are funny jokes are actually sexual innuendos. Both times directed at my daughter. I complained to the manager to no avail. So be cautious if you eat here with your family the comical jokes have a serious sexual under tone. read more

I made reservations for 16 at the La Verne location. Spoke to the manager for this special New Year Occasion. We just lost a loved one and this was their favorite location... as we arrived on time, they said they can seat 10 of us together and the rest in another location... First off I told them I was paying... So one check and I will tip well, 20-30% due to the big party. The little host girl couldn't handle me asking for a manager after they said they could accommodate us. So she told her manager that we yelled at her? I did not even raise my voice and my wife didn't even speak to her?? Any way you missed out on a 2000 dollar bill and 30% tip! We will never go back and sorry to say, your service sucked! Needless to say I called Tokyo Wako, they accommodated and the manager was super attentive to our huge party. We felt like family... so my recommendation is go to Tokyo Waco or Benihana... read more

I took my daughter here for an early dinner, about 5 pm. When we arrived, the place was pretty empty. Only a few couples, no big groups and nobody cooking yet. We were seated and waited about 10 minutes for someone to take our drink order. Then, it took another 15 minutes for someone to take our food order. The place was still pretty empty but service was amazingly slow. It took another 15 to 20 minutes for the cook to finally come over and begin preparing the food. The cooks at places like this are pretty much made to interact with the guests so we talked a little bit. He finished the fried rice and was moving on o the next item to cook. He asked how the rice was, I told him that it was very good.....and for some reason he decided to respond with..."well, you must be drunk!" I know it was a joke, but not something you say to someone who you don't know. I found it rude and undignified for a restaurant. The food was good, but a bit under cooked. I would normally given this place a 3 or 4 star rating, but because of the very slow service (in an empty restaurant) and the rude attitude of the cooks, I can only give them 2. I have ordered for pick and dined in and so far so good. They have a delicious caliente roll and a really delicious lunch special that has a delicious amount of spicy crab... They are always busy so if you come for lunch call ahead to ask for the wait time. Let me start by saying I am only giving a 5 star rating because of the years of good experience I have had at this restaurant, but lately that I am coming more often and not just for special occasions... I have not had the same great customer service experience as before. Lately I just sit in the dining area (non teppan) because I love the food and don't need to see the show every time. I've come 3 times recently, the first of these occasions my server was named Jacob. Oh my god... he was absolutely amazing! He embodies exactly how every waiter in the history of the world should treat their guests! INCREDIBLE! We left with a delicious meal in our bellies and having an excellent waiter! I was beyond happy! I tipped a generous amount and keep in mind that I usually hate tipping. I can't say enough good things about Jacob! On my second occasion I also sat in the dining. Upon sitting down I saw Jacob walk by and got excited but then Conner was our server... Wow complete opposite! He didn't greet us or even smile, made us feel awkward when we ordered, forgot to specify if we wanted fried rice or not which they ALWAYS do, then he never checked on us, someone else entirely delivered our food, and then we saw him just hanging out in the bar area not even doing his job! Totally wasting time! We finally flagged down Jacob and he finished with us, getting us a box, the check, and asking if we needed anything else. How sad that Jacob had to pick up Conners slack! This time we left upset bothered that this event had occurred. The third and final visit, once again in dining we sat at a large booth and a sweet Asian woman was our server. She was kind, but you could tell she was quite busy. Then she came to tell us that she was going on break, but forgot to mention who would be helping us. We waited and waited... Conner came and gave me some more water without me asking and he didn't say a word either, but I knew it was him because I remembered him from last time. Finally I once again flagged down Jacob when we were ready to leave and I apologized stating we had no idea who our server was and I am drawn to him because of his reliability. He said no problem that he would help us with a smile, as always. When he came back with the check I asked him who our legit server was supposed to be... guess what?! Conner! Can you believe that? So ridiculous! He didn't even say he was our server, just quietly gave me water and walked away. I told Jacob how sad it is that he's taking care of the entire dining section while his "teammate" if you will, is literally helping NO ONE. I said who is this tip going to? Jacob replied that they all share tips. I'm sorry Shogun, but you're treating your employees unfairly! Why does Conner deserve the same amount of tips as Jacob?! No way! Conner needs to be fired and Jacob needs to be promoted! He is carrying your entire dining area on his own! Please do something about this! Until then I will refer to him as Saint Jacob, because he is an outstanding waiter! read more

What can I say, this place has never let me down. I come here a hell of a lot and everything that I have ordered is great. I 99.9% stick to the sushi, but I have came here before and had the teppan grill. My favorite rolls are the Double Shrimp roll, the N'Sane roll and the Spicy Lobster roll. They are so filling and always hit the spot. Lately I have been ordering their spicy edamame, it is so addicting. The flavors are perfect. They also have a good happy hour. I wish they had AYCE, because I would tear that place up on the regs, ya dig?! I get to-go orders here regularly and they are fast and very nice at the front desk. This place is the bomb! read more

Super disappointed, I went here today and TOLD the chef that I have a shellfish allergy, what does he do? Puts my food right on top of the place where he JUST cooked shrimp without cleaning the grill.... I talked to the manager who was just like oh you don't have to pay not that I had received any food but salad. WELL DAMN STRAIGHT YOUR COOK COULD HAVE KILLED ME IF I HADN'T NOTICED. Came here for teppan once with my girlfriend and her cousin and date. We had a double date. Service here was pretty on par I couldn't say that nothing went wrong except for when I ordered a beer it was flat so I just ordered a new one and it came out better. I ordered a steak and shrimp combo and it came with soup, salad, veggies, steak and shrimp. Also fried rice but thats extra. My girlfriend shared a seafood platter with her cousin which included shrimp, lobster and scallops. Also soup salad and fried rice. Our chef prepared and cooked everything to our liking. He was a very charismatic and funny chef doing a lot of tricks with the food and all. All I gotta say was that the portions were great but price wise the bill will hit your pocket back. read more

La Verne location. This was my favorite place for years!! It was our families special place for years! It has gone down hill quickly. I keep giving it another try as I understand sometimes there is just a bad night. the last 3 times we have had horrible waitress service, horrible cooks, and rudeness all around. The Manager, or so she said, was absolutely the worst cause I went to her for help. We waited 45 min to sit and we had reservations for 20. Our waitress was on her 4th day, and had no clue and disappeared a lot. Our cook had no clue!!! He didn't have enough fried rice to go around because he burnt it, and he said he will order more. We never got it till the very end. We never received our appetizers. He was sooo slow that one of us ordered beef Yakisoba. The noodles was the first thing. 30 min later her put the steak on, everything was cold. One ordered Filet and a Lobster, he poured the salt on the lobster so heavily, he couldn't eat it. I had a coupon from their website, but 3 dinners get one free. We had 20 people and approx $1000 tab amongst us, and they took off a kids meal for 9.99. Of course I was furious and said really, are you serious. The waitress was embarrassed and got the Manager to take a chicken Neal off. Then we had 2 fifty dollars gift cards, the rest was cash. And the manager said she couldn't take the gift cards because they were purchase at Costco. At this time I was so sick of this Manager and gave up. I told her to call the police. I am paying this tab in full. Everybody left, this is all the money I have, I am using these gift cards. If you don't want to take it. Call the police. I am sure they will agree with me. She then said I will go back and see what I can do, mind be she told me she was the manager. Then she came back and said I will do it this time. When I walked out front everybody was out there. That's when we realized we had to come in and put $100 deposit down to reserve for 20 people, and they didn't take that off our bill. Came here with the boyfriend and his family. They are regulars of this restaurant and the boyfriend has mentioned to me many times about the spicy lobster rolls and the teppanyaki here. I was excited because I haven't had any teppan since coming to LA. The interior design is surprisingly great considering it's located in a stripped mall kind of place. The restaurant seemed to be divided into the sushi section and teppan section. Teppan tables were really crowded but the sushi bar was pretty quiet. They also have a bar that serves cocktails. We started off with some sushi. I ordered the BSC (baked scallop on top of Cali roll) and boyfriend ordered the spicy lobster roll (and was teased by the family because he orders the same roll every time). The Sushis were really really good. Big portions and flavorful. Best sushi I've had here, and priced much more reasonable than Kastuya, where we usually visit. The teppan meals came with a soup, a salad and rice ($2 more for fried rice). The soup was refreshingly NOT miso soup, but a clear onion soup. It was pretty good. Th salad average, like many other teppan meal salads. I loved the whole teppan experience. The chef makes the meal delicious and entertaining at the same time. Every course he cooked there was a joke that came with it. There's also buttons on the teppan that triggers sound effects when he was mraking the onion volcano and the train (LOL). I noticed that every teppan chef brought props with them to perform tricks with. Now the teppan food. I feel like there could be more flavor variation. A lot of it is just teriyaki sauce and soy sauce, which gets a little old, despite the fact that they're both very tasty sauces. I loved my fillet mignon which was cooked medium rare, just the way I liked it, and was juicy and tender. I tried my boyfriend's lobster which was really tasty too. Usually I have nothing but good things to say about sho guns. This is after all the place I would choose if I was feeling like eating sushi. But this time I was not happy with the service if I could call it that. My husband's family and I went to eat there one Sunday afternoon and it was four adults and two kids. My nieces are 5 and 3 and didn't want sushi so we got them chipotle instead. When we asked the host if we can bring in the chipotle for them they refused us! The manager said that we cannot eat there if we bring outside food in. So, you turned us away because of two kids meals from another place. I would understand if it was an adult bringing food in but food for children? Please! I will not be coming to sho guns anymore, that proved to be horrible customer service and I refuse to be a customer of that location. read more
