This is my family's favorite Japanese restaurant in the area, so we came here for Father's Day lunch. The place is always clean, and the sushi chef's are the quickest ones around. We ordered a rainbow roll, a salmon skin roll, a bento box with BBQ ribs and salmon sashimi, a chicken udon, and a sashimi salad. The rolls were decent. The ribs were good, albeit a bit salty (so was the miso soup that came with our order). I really enjoyed the sashimi salad - it was a bit heavy on the sesame oil dressing, so much so that I didn't even use the spicy sauce that came with the salad. Still, the best dish that they have on the menu, and a super large portion: a great deal for $13. The chicken udon is mediocre. I wouldn't order that again. The owner is super friendly - one of the reasons why my dad likes it here is that he gets to talk shop with the owner. I don't particularly appreciate the constant, and long, interruptions to our dining experience, but it was Father's Day, and it made my dad happy. read more

I visited this place for lunch, (I ordered takeout) and the Man that greeted me (perhaps the owner) knew that it was my first time visiting. He was very welcoming, nice and courteous. He explained the menus to me and also gave me some information about the restaurant and told me that they have been in business for many years. My youngest son came for a visit the last couple of days, and yesterday he said he wanted to try Japanese. We had drove by a Stockton Japanese restaurant in Stockton by the name of ShiraSoni; we found their website online and I told him I WILL NOT pay $20 a dish for Japanese! Especially in Stockton! So, Shogun was it, and Shogun was close to Lodi. The Sushi Bar, which can accommodate around twenty customers and around two Sushi Chefs, is at the NorthEast end of the restaurant. There was only one customer at the bar when we went in, as everyone was probably still at work. The rest of the restaurant, which is pretty big, was filled with tables of varying sizes that could accommodate four people to groups of a dozen! I was very surprised by the affordability of this Japanese restaurant! VERY surprised! And pleased! My son was leaving back to Las Vegas that evening and did not want to try Sushi, as the late afernoon temperature was pretty warm. Starters were the traditional Miso Soup with Tofu which was very flavorful. But I've never had a bad Miso Soup. We also had a small, cold lettuce salad with a sweet white Salad Dressing, which was VERY good. Another appetizer we tried was the Grilled Squid, which was made perfectly. Not overcooked which would have made it rubbery, and definitely not undercooked. VERY good! I had a Bento Box consisting of Salmon Teriyaki and BBQ Beef Ribs ($10.95). The Salmon Teriyaki was cooked perfectly with a bronze colored sweet and salty sauce on top... probably a little too salty. The BBQ Beef Ribs in the Bento Box was VERY good, probably not as addictive as Korean Galbi. My son had the Udon noodle soup with Tempura Vegetables ($8.50). I got to try some of my son's soup.. VERY GOOD! I have a suggestion for Japanese restaurants... The soup stock that came with the Udon Noodles does not compare in taste with the free Miso Soup... Why not just use the bean paste from which the Miso Soup is made for the dinner soups? Just a suggestion... We both ordered the most unusual drink I've seen in a LONG time... Ramune.. which on the menu is described as a sweet Soft Drink. Shogun charges $2.50 for a small bottle. You probably can describe Ramune as a very sweet, bubble-gummy type of drink reminiscent of Sprite (but sweeter)... And just for kids! The gimmick that Ramune uses is a clear glass marble at the very top of the bottle. Unopened, the marble acts as the plug. You use the opener which is part of the bottle top to push (with a little effort) the marble down into an enclosure at the top of the bottle. After you get the marble down, the marble has no other purpose than to interfere with your drinking afterwards. I haven't been here in over 3 years. I was hoping it had changed. The waitress was nice. It was only us and one other couple there. When she handed the chef our sushi order he yawned and acted as if he didn't want to be there. I thought it was really unprofessional of him to do that in front of customers, even if it was just 4 people there, we could all clearly see and especially hear his loud yawns and sighs. Then.... We were very disappointed to have tasteless rolls. My deep fried asparagus was totally obviously old. The batter wasn't crunchy, it was tough like stale bread, I couldn't even bite through it. My husband ordered a Volcano roll and it tasted like flavorless mush. We didn't want to complain so we nicely asked for the check and just left the food there. I wish I would've taken photos. My husband and I use to come here a lot. I was shocked to see it has new owners. It looks a lot more brighter in the dinning area. My children took us here for my husband's birthday. The service was just ok, but then again restaurant wasn't too busy. The food was just ok. Nothing to brag about. They just opened, so maybe it will get better with time. It became clear this was more an act as I could come in twice in a week and he would treat me very different each time. I order the mixed sushi and the house roll. It never occurred to be to ask what the house roll was...it was a deep fried tuna roll. When people are ordering raw fish it might mean they are trying to eat more healthy. Fish portions was small. I left and went and got a snack. Fish all tasted the same. Used to come here a lot and travel a ways to get here for my favorite volcano roll....this was my first time since they've changed management and I have to say I'm highly disappointed. My favorite roll is no longer the same. I ordered a volcano roll to go and when I finally got home to enjoy my meal it was very different and extremely dry. There was no sauce like it used to have. The spicy and teryaki sauce on top of the crunchies used to be my favorite part! There was also these long stringy crab pieces on top of the mess and not in the roll itself. I've heard reviews about how they'll sneak in some random charges and you won't even know until you check your receipt. Well, I just had dinner here it was below average. Probably the worst sushi I've ever had. I ordered the Stockton roll and the avocado that was used was rotting and tasted horrible. I also ordered the smokey joe (secret menu) and it was DRENCHED in the sauce and burnt. I don't know how they're still in business. Also, the smokey joe used to only be 12.95 but it is now 14.95. We came during the happy hour, where they offer some appetizers for a couple dollars cheaper, and it was alright. The food was okay, and is around $10 a person.
