I hate leaving a bad review, especially on a place i've never been to. But spending $50+ on something as mediocre as the sushi that came from this restaurant? Yikes. The avocado tasted unripe and even the masago tasted like it was past its expiration date. The sauce was weird, like teriyaki but off brand? and the lion king was the worst excuse for a lion king i've ever had. The description said spicy mayo for half of the rolls we had but none of them tasted at all like spicy mayo. Went here recently for my father-in-law's birthday. Great experience. The owner is awesome and clearly cares about his customers. He was really helpful with our party (storing our cake, and getting the restaurant to sing happy birthday) and made sure we had a great night all in all. You can tell he cares about his customer's experience. And the food was really good too. I recommend the Hawaiian Poke, but really everything we ate was delicious. 2nd time here. The food is nothing but amazing. Came here on 9/10/22 Saturday morning. Best time to come since it's not busy. Chef's greeted me and server followed up with our order and refilled our drinks. The experience was amazing and I felt appreciated. The sashimi salad was very flavorful, the rolls were perfect with the balance of fish, rice and sauces, the appetizers came out to perfection especially with the presentation. I haven't been here in over 3 years. I was hoping it had changed. The waitress was nice. It was only us and one other couple there. When she handed the chef our sushi order he yawned and acted as if he didn't want to be there. I thought it was really unprofessional of him to do that in front of customers, even if it was just 4 people there, we could all clearly see and especially hear his loud yawns and sighs. Then.... We were very disappointed to have tasteless rolls. My deep fried asparagus was totally obviously old. The batter wasn't crunchy, it was tough like stale bread, I couldn't even bite through it. My husband ordered a Volcano roll and it tasted like flavorless mush. We didn't want to complain so we nicely asked for the check and just left the food there. I wish I would've taken photos. We used to come here all the time and stopped a few years ago when the food and service started going down hill. I hope it changes. I'll try it in another few years. read more

We were a party of 6 and I did call ahead of time to ask if there was a wait time and there wasn't. Service was okay. The girl introduced herself to us but for the sake of privacy, I won't drop her name here. She got our order and went back to her counter where she just stayed there. Didn't check up on us much. Only asked if we needed anything when she brought our food. There were 2 other tables besides us, one being a table of 2 and the other being a single so it wasn't that busy. She was the only waitress at the time so she probably got burnt out and needed a break, which I understand. Overall, I loved the place and food. I can see myself coming here again! read more

My gf and their family decided to stop by I was curious as to why this place had such low reviews as it turns out they are under new ownership. The rolls were a good quantity and had a great ratio of sushi and rice. Flavor was great as we had a range of 6 different rolls. They serve can soda which = moderate sipping & NO REFILLS. Who does that?!?! Near 25 min after my Coke in can was given, still no food. I asked for ice in a cup for my Coke in a can. 10 min later, I ask again....."our ice machine is broken, I need to get some" Well hot damn you could've explained that when we asked for iced water or at the time you served us the room temperature water. What a huge improvement Shogun has shown since its new ownership (sushi chef Chong). The food was just amazing. My wife, daughter and I had the crazy spicy roll, the house roll, Tiger Roll and the UOP roll. The taste was exquisite and so unique. My experience dining in was superb. They were even playing the 80's jams which added to the great ambience. The customer service is great and I had an overall outstanding experience. My opinion not the best sushi in town. I order the Godzilla roll which is my favorite roll and I do not know what I ate or taste and no, I did not have cold. The miso soup and salad was good so I thought this was a good start. Service was not that great, didn't allow a first timer to review the menu and there were no one in here except 2 other couples. I usually read the Yelp reviews before choosing a restaurant, but today we were starving and this was the closest sushi place. This was my first visit ever. It was around 4 in the afternoon and there were no customers. We were greeted and seated. The waiter seemed a bit anxious for someone with zero customers, but I guess I tried to put a positive spin on it and tell myself he was just very attentive to customers. He gave us about 2 minutes before asking if we were ready and then after we ordered the 4 rolls we wanted he took the menus and said "Ok, someone else going to help you. I'm going on break." My son and I looked at each other and smiled... not sure why he needed to take a break from an empty restaurant, but whatever. I asked my son to check his phone and see how many stars this place had on Yelp. He told me 3. I didn't actually read any of the other reviews until tonight though. When the sushi chef was almost done with our rolls, another couple came in.After a few minutes when we didn't see any other employees. The Chef called to them from across the restaurant to just sit in a booth. Later, a man who I assume is the owner came over and brought 2 of our rolls. He said "lion King Roll" (which we had ordered) and another roll which was inaudible...there was a bit of a language barrier. The problem was that when he walked away, we couldn't figure out based on the ingredients what roll it was! I don't think either of us ordered it, but we figured the waiter was in a rush to take a break so maybe he heard the order wrong. I'm not big on sending food back and it actually ended up being the one I like the most lol, so I just ate it. The same thing happened with the next two however.... "The Nova roll and d...roll"... My son had ordered the Nova Scotia roll and personally when I tried it, I thought it was repugnant! But I had ordered a Dragon roll and thought that was what the D sound must have been. If it was a Dragon roll, I don't think all the ingredients were there. At the end of the meal, I figured Yelp had it right again...this place seemed VERY average. I would only give the food 2 stars; it was less than mediocre and I didn't really enjoy any of it which is a shame. The place itself was nice and quiet inside and they even put on some soft music for us :). But then, the check came and I was in a hurry so I just handed them my credit card. I don't know if we were charged different because the waiter wrote down the wrong rolls and I never saw an itemized bill but I wasn't happy with it. I didn't have time to make a big deal out of it (and after reading the reviews now about the "crazy" owner, I'm glad I didn't try!) so I paid and still left a 15% tip but I won't be back. The service is poor. There are better sushi even in Stockton. I'm assuming those who really like it here have never had good sushi before. I was charged $3 for a drop of salad dressing. Are you kidding me? I was basically told, "You want extra, you pay." For a quarter size serving of dressing??? You wouldn't even miss it! I noticed patrons were treated differently and the lighter your skin is, the better the service from my point of view. Yes, my skin is a little tanner than most. It was from the moment we walked in until we left, we compared our service to those that were next to us and we weren't once asked if we were doing okay. I had to ask for more water while the other table didn't even need to be asked. Never again. But if you must, the volcano roll is what I will miss. read more

i called ahead to see if they were doing dine in. the time online for closing says 8pm. so we walked in around 715, and there was no one in the restaurant at all besides another man who was waiting for his mobile order. it took the lady about 10 minutes to come out the back. then she asked if we placed a mobile order and i said no dine in for 3 please and the lady just stared at us like they were already closed. and i asked "so can we eat in here or not?" she paused a little and said sure and the man that was standing there had laughed at the situation. after we sat down it took her another 10 mins to come up to us. during that time 2 other people had walked in and they waited about the same time to be seated in this empty restaurant. we ordered and got our food. the sushi was safeway level at best and the food was bland. we ordered chicken katsu and teriyaki chicken. no flavor at all. about 40 mins goes by and another couple comes in who had a mobile order and she was talking to them in their language and was getting their order ready for 10 mins. by this time we are done eating and waiting for the check. she continues to talk to them for another 5 mins and doesn't even bother to look in our direction as we're trying to get her attention to give us the check. if there ever was a perfect opportunity to dine and dash that would've been it because she was not paying attention at all. it got to the point where i got upset and walked over to her conversation and interrupted her for the check and she said "yeah after i'm done helping them with their mobile order i'll bring you the check" we did not leave a tip. don't waste your time or money. terrible service. no flavor in the food. just all around terrible. read more

This is my family's favorite Japanese restaurant in the area, so we came here for Father's Day lunch. The place is always clean, and the sushi chef's are the quickest ones around. We ordered a rainbow roll, a salmon skin roll, a bento box with BBQ ribs and salmon sashimi, a chicken udon, and a sashimi salad. The rolls were decent. The ribs were good, albeit a bit salty (so was the miso soup that came with our order). I really enjoyed the sashimi salad - it was a bit heavy on the sesame oil dressing, so much so that I didn't even use the spicy sauce that came with the salad. Still, the best dish that they have on the menu, and a super large portion: a great deal for $13. The chicken udon is mediocre. I wouldn't order that again. The owner is super friendly - one of the reasons why my dad likes it here is that he gets to talk shop with the owner. I don't particularly appreciate the constant, and long, interruptions to our dining experience, but it was Father's Day, and it made my dad happy. read more
