Came here a few days ago with my boyfriend and was somewhat disappointed. I was so excited to order the Lion King roll that I ordered two, which ultimately turned out to be a mistake. My husband and I eat at this sushi restaurant at least twice a month. The thing we love about this restaurant is that it is family owned and everyone who works there is really personable and ready to help you with anything, whether it be refilling your drink right away to changing an order of rolls to make sure you get exactly what you want. At first the sheer number of workers may be off putting as you will be asked more than once, by different employees if you need anything else, which can be bothersome. However, in this restaurant you really get to know everyone who works there and learn to ignore it. (Although I can understand why this kind of aggressive service would be offputting to other yelpers). In fact, the owner walks the floor helping customers pick out what they want and talking about how he came up with different dishes. It makes you feel like you are eating sushi at home. The food itself is really good. Their scotty roll (philadelphia fried roll) is really good and comes in the perfect little bite sizes. They also have a large selection of moderately priced rolls as well that really appeal to different tastes. Well now I finally understand the poor reviews. And I don't often give poor reviews. But after yesterday's experience, I was left with a sour taste in my mouth. We entered, and I see the female owner peeping up and looking at us, but doesn't bother to greet us. After we were seated, we were asked to move to another table because "a larger party was arriving." There were plenty of seating as only one other table was occupied and they could've easily pushed any two tables together to form a table for 6, but no, we moved. We went to sit at a booth, but we asked to move again, to the middle booth, because they didn't want us sitting at the first booth. No reasons were given this time. Our food arrived promptly and thus the 2 stars. While eating, the female owner asked my 3 yr old daughter to not climb over the booth, which caused a tantrum. Prior to leaving, another waiter gave my kids candy without asking either parents, which is a no no because you don't know if the kids are allergic or if they can have sugar. It was a nice gesture, but nevertheless, not appreciated as my son has dental issues. Of course, if I take the candy away, another tantrum would have ensued. I am a lover of sushi! I've been to Shogun a number of times and have never left disappointed. It is one of the better sushi spots in Stockton, as far as quality goes. The rolls are fresh and yummy!! My best friend and I favor Shogun. Whenever we need to suffice our sushi cravings Shogun is where we usually can be found. What is up with the spicy sauce?!?! My table ordered five special rolls (Godzilla, Dragon, Tiger, Super Rainbow, and Lobster Roll). Not one desription indicated that it included spicy sauce. After the third roll, we had to ask them to make sure to NOT put the spicy sauce on the remaining rolls. Recommendation to Shogun, your descriptions should include the spicy sauce if the rolls come with spicy sauce. We brought it to the attention of the (I think) owner, and she tried to tell us that the descriptions do say that. They really don't. Then she said it says "spicy tuna." Spicy tuna is NOT spicy sauce. We were sorely disappointed and probably could have finished all the rolls had it not been for that damn sauce! So then our Lobster Roll comes sans spicy sauce, but there seems to be a hint of wasabi in it. Being that my sister and I are not wasabi fans, we bring it to the attention of our server. He tells us there's no wasabi in it. We tell him that we can taste the wasabi in it and ask him to taste it (he doesn't). So he goes back to the sushi bar to check with the chef, and he comes back and tells us again that there's no wasabi in it. Then he said, maybe it was on the chef's hand or on his knife, but there's no wasabi in the roll. Okay fine, but then your chef needs to wash his hands better or use a separate knife to cut different rolls. Okay, so moving on past the rolls. The nigiri sushi tasted fresh and was very good. Wakame salad - good. Tempura - good. The kids had the teriyaki and seemed to enjoy it. The service was not bad. I'm surprised to read some of the negative comments about their service in the other reviews. Maybe we came on one of their good days. I would have given them another star had it not been for the overuse of spicy sauce and the invisible wasabi in our Lobster Roll. I will probably return when I'm back in town, and I'll make sure to ask them to keep the spicy stuff to themselves. read more

I really enjoyed the food. I placed an order to go of gyoza ( 6 pieces for only 3.95!) and salmon sashimi which came with a salad. I thought the food was excellent. The only reason I took 2 stars off was because I felt the service was seriously lacking. I dealt with what seemed like the manager or owner. He was very rude. I needed a receipt for a business expense and he was very difficult about it and refused to listen to what I had to say. It made the experience kind of a downer, but once I got my food- I perked up. The sushi was made horribly for a Togo order so we brought it back to be remade and the RUDE old lady took it to the back, put it in a different Togo box, drowned it in sauce and brought it back to us. We refused to take that sorry looking mess home, as it was already falling apart and looked soggy. That RUDE old lady told us she wasn't going to remake it for us and we told her we weren't going anywhere unless we got our rolls or a refund and she CALLED THE COPS on us!! This old lady told them that they need them to come because we wouldn't leave after she told us that was how the sushi was made. And that we were going to wait all night. And that she is scared. Anywho, The manager came and had it remade. As we were leaving, the rude old lady goes, " Thank you! Don't ever come back ever again." Right as she was seating customers and in front of the manager. I have only been to this Shogun twice. The first time I was with my mom who was visiting from out of state... she is a very talkative woman, and asked one of the owners what she thought of another sushi place in the area (her favorite place to eat, I might add) - I understand you cannot expect a competitor to give rave reviews on another restaurant, but there is a thing called professionalism. She did not have it. She bad-mouthed that restaurant for about 10 minutes, no joke. Many of the things she said were also completely untrue. It was a casual question and I did not enjoy listening to her overkill response... it was very awkward. What made this experience worse was after we got our food, I was completely unimpressed. My husband and mom got sushi and said it was very good, but I could not have any seeing as I'm pregnant, so I ordered udon instead. It was pretty terrible... I couldn't finish it, which is unusual for me, so I decided to box it up and take it home to see if I could salvage it somehow and make it more edible. I was also very disappointed with the side salad that came with my meal. Normally I love getting that little salad in Asian restaurants, but here they absolutely DROWN it in this watery mayo-based dressing. It's a salad, not soup! The bottom HALF of the bowl it was served in was a white watery substance. A couple of months later I went back with my husband. Still pregnant, couldn't try sushi... hubby said it was very good. This time I got something less risky... I think it was a chicken teriyaki bento box or something. The bento box was good, but then again I've never had one that was awful either. The salad was the same... absolutely terrible, completely drowned in watery dressing. The service was very mixed. One of the owners (I think) showed us to our seats and he was very nice. When we ordered, it was some other, younger guy. This was a slow time, so I'm not sure why our server changed. He was okay, but not particularly friendly. Then the owner came back, and was not very nice at all this time. Then the kid again. I felt very confused about who was getting the tip and why on earth they kept switching. All in all, I am not very impressed with this place. The people who run the restaurant make me a little nervous and I have not been impressed with the food. Solid 3.5 star restaurant. The service fluctuates from attentive and friendly to aloof and sometimes annoyed (hence the reduction from 4 stars). This isn't a pomp and circumstance place, if you're willing to forgo consistent service, the food stands on its own. The Bento box is the best value (a combo entree, pot stickers, salad, miso soup, rice and orange wedges); come with a hearty appetite and you'll probably go home with a box. They've never screwed up my order (creature of habit I am), salmon teriyaki (no salt or pepper) with sauce on the side. My fiancé orders his chicken teriyaki with no sauce and usually asks for a side of California rolls. In addition, I've ordered the sashimi (either salmon or tuna) which if not stored/prepared correctly could send you to a local emergency room. Every time it has been fresh, cold and not "off" in any way. The salad. To me, iceberg lettuce has no discernible nutritive value, but since their salad is topped with a scrumptious secret dressing, it makes me overlook the insult of the iceberg. No matter how chatty the owner gets he won't budge on the secret. Is it ginger? Honey? Is it mayonnaise? Is it a hint of citrus? He even shared that a former employee is a chef at another Japanese joint in town, and has tried, rather unsuccessfully to replicate the secret dressing. Whatever it is, I've never waxed poetic on a salad, but this dressing makes me want to don a black beret, smoke Gitanes and snap my fingers while flowing some moody bon mots. Strictly about the Sashimi: Sashimi is waaaAy better than over-rated RAW unfreshness at Trinity Parkway. My favorite was the Maguro (Tuna) & Hamachi (yellowtail). The sushi is deliciously fresh and well put together. Great selection of rolls that include raw fish, as opposed to some places with a heavy emphasis on rolls with cooked items. Udon soup with chicken very good as well. Edamame was cold and tasted old. My preference is edamame served warm. After two visits, one with a small group and another with a larger group, i would say the food was really good. However, the service on the last visit with a larger group was really bad. I am no service diva, but look for basic service. Had to ask for menus and water after close to 10 minutes of being seated. Pretty much had to ask for most things that should be provided (water, menus, bill, soy sauce trays, refills, etc). Granted, the place was busy. This place has seen so many owners over the years. Its a decent place, my family goes there a lot. The food is okay and service as well if a bit hectic at times. A plus is its the only sushi joint I know of here that doesn't close mid-day and reopen for dinner. So if you're craving and all the other places are closed, its an option. I like the MS roll which is another crazy, loaded with stuff and yummy sauce roll thats my style. I'd also recommend the Hamachi Kama and make sure to get ponzu sauce with it, sometimes they don't serve it with it for some reason. Their other stuff is okay. It's fairly quiet in here too, another plus for those that hate the loud environments of other sushi establishments here in Stockton. So I have been coming here for over a decade with my friends and family, and I always returned because my favorite roll and the insanely good salad dressing. However the previous owner was very imposing. Today I returned when it had changed management, and LET ME TELL YOU, THIS PLACE HAS DONE A COMPLETE UPGRADE. The menu is upgraded to new and different dishes, as well as reinvented sushi rolls. The service is IMPECCABLE as well as GENUINE. I mean the waiter was honest about a question we had on the roll, and his lack of knowledge on it, because it wasn't typical for sushi dishes. I appreciated the honesty as well as the prompt demeanor of the owner to explain the ingredient choice, and we were so pleased that we decided to stick to the suggestions because IT WAS BOMB. And finally the renovations are superb and so classy. Honestly, there is so much more light and energy that flows through the place because of just the slight changes the new management made. The restaurant is nice inside. Employees are good with the service maybe because it was slow. We had the dragon roll, tiger roll and 49er roll. The dragon roll was decent as well as the 49er roll but the dragon roll did not have much flavor in the taste. The tiger roll as a shorter roll with 5 larger pieces but it didn't look as much in portion size. Plus toppings were falling off of the tiger roll and the dragon roll. It wasn't well rolled. So I guess they are under new management. Anyway, the food was practically not edible. Ordered the raw oysters, ramen, 3 rolls and nigiri. There was absolutely NO flavor and the quality was terrible. My kids wouldn't even touch the ramen. And my nigiri was cooked? The menu had no mention of this. I might not be a sushi connoisseur but I thought nigiri was supposed to be raw? Our total came out to about $80. By that point we just wanted to hurry up and pay the bill and try to erase this place from our memories.
