Where do I begin? From the moment I walked in, I wasn't greeted--I was simply stared at. He went to the kitchen and returned about 15 minutes later, saying, "That's how they are." I politely asked if they could remake the dish and warm it up. He said no and walked away. We wanted to order more food but never received further attention. Eventually, I went to the register and asked for the check, explaining I hadn't received proper service. He handed me the printed receipt, and I paid in cash rather than by card. I left--and haven't returned since. I felt it was unfair to pay for a dish we didn't eat and for the time we spent--nearly two hours--with minimal service. The service was fast though and they didn't make a fuss over me wanting to send the food back - it's something I have never done before but I hadn't even eaten one full piece of the meat before sending it back. Now, fast forward to two days later. We came again and I wanted the egg puff with fruit. We weren't seated immediately but it seemed like a lack of staff in the morning in comparison to the first night we came and the dining area was busy. I tried a bite of the of each and the chicken on both were juicy and tender. My dish was too salty and had way too much sauce over it. I used half of my rice to pat my beef to take off the salt! The beef was tender and the green beans were delicious. The side salad was a waste. They serve it with way too much dressing that it's like lettuce in a soup! The drinks were good! Five of us had lunch on 8-25 Sunday at noon. We ordered 3 meals & pan fried noodles. 3 salad and soup and hot drinks came with the meal, we ordered two more hot drinks. Waitress said 3 sweet milk came with the meal. Service was so so, the pork chop, and rock were very salty, the short ribs were mostly bone, pan fried noodles was good. We were charged with service charge and for the sweet milk which we did not order. We questioned the waitress about the added service, she said it is added to six and more people, we told her there were five people at our party. She said 5 and 6 people are the same. She walked away and offered no more explanation. I'm just wondering if the service charges information was printed on the menu or not. The waitress's attitude was rude. read more

My husband and I like to come here whenever we're in the area in the evening and are looking to have a late night snack. He always gets the mango sago with coconut milk and I always pick something to eat. I would definitely recommend the peanut butter and condensed milk waffle. The texture is so gooood and you can never go wrong with peanut butter. This last time, I decided to get egg puffs with peanut butter topping. The texture wasn't that great so I'm going to pass on the egg puffs next time and stick with the waffle! I don't like that the mango sago came in a to-go cup even though we dined in. Less plastic please! The meh service at HK cafes are very typical and expected. You have to really catch their attention when you need something. read more

I rarely go to Oakland nowadays but I made sure to stop by Shooting Star Cafe for lunch when I was in town. I've been to Shooting Star a handful of times now and I've always leave satisfied. I usually get pretty lucky getting street parking, but there is also a parking structure across the street. On the weekends, this restaurant is usually always busy so make to get there early before any lunch rush. Reason why I like Shooting Star is because of the variety it offers, there's an extensive menu with snacks, entrees, desserts, drinks, and more! For 2, we ordered: - 1 Hong Kong milk tea: 2/5 - was looking forward to this the most because I loved their HK milk tea back then but was super disappointed; super watery - Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings: 4/5 - seasoned well on the outside/skin and not as flavorful on inside but comes out piping hot! - Braise Shredded Roast Duck & Pickle Cabbage Vermicelli: 4/5 - so much veggies, yum! But be careful of the duck bones - Baked Chicken Steak Spaghetti: 4/5 - love the cheese, tasty and fun to eat; you have option to do spaghetti, rice, or macaroni Service isn't the greatest but the food makes up for it. read more
