I tried their bahn mi sandwich before which was good. I tried again today and added fried egg (+$1) but this time I'm a little disappointed. The pork belly was good. It's fat and juicy. However, the bahn mi does not seem to have any sauce. I had to put my own Mayo and hot sauce to lift up its flavor profile. Maybe cause it's a take out, the bread wasn't crusty anymore. read more

DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY FROM HERE. I placed an order for delivery and the delivery time kept getting delayed. I contacted the restaurant and they said the order has been ready for a bit. So I called the driver to let them know. The driver went to the restaurant and the restaurant kept telling them the food wasn't ready. Eventually the driver dropped the order since the restaurant was taking too long. It was a small space with only 3 tables and a counter so be prepared to wait during busier times. It's casual dining so you order at the counter, find a place to sit, and they bring you your food. Tons of people came in for coffee and drinks while we were eating. We ordered a hot Vietnamese coffee, lemon ricotta pancakes, pork belly banh mi, and pork adobo bowl. 3/5 Vietnamese coffee was really good. A little sweet (I'm used to Vietnamese coffee being pretty strong) but still good. 5/5 Lemon ricotta hotcakes were amazing! Super fluffy, love the berries on top for the freshness, and the perfect amount of powdered sugar and syrup. 4/5 Pork belly banh mi was pretty good. I enjoyed the non-traditional meat and veggies. The pork belly was a little too fatty (but I mean, it's pork belly) and the slight sweetness of the hoisin with the crunch from the pickled cucumber was great. 3.5/5 Pork adobo bowl had a lot of rice and the pork was a little dry. Really enjoyed the pickled onions, cucumbers, and fried garlic on top. Overall great flavor. Short Grain does a great job balancing out the heaviness of the dish with freshness from the pickled vegetables and fresh fruits. Really liked that they have a good amount of vegetarian options. I ordered here today for lunch through grub hub. I ordered the pork belly sandwich and one hash brown. The food arrived on time and looked delicious. The hash brown was a little soggy but I guess that's a problem from ordering takeout and delivery since fried foods can get soggy during delivery. I decided to eat the hash brown first. The first few bites were fine but then on the third bite I felt something weird and sharp in my mouth. I spit out the food and found a staple in the chewed up food. I have no idea how a staple had gotten into the hash brown, but if I would have swallowed it, I think I would have had major issues. I immediately threw out the rest of the hash brown and though the sandwich looked good I threw that out as well. Unfortunately grub hub wouldn't offer me a refund since it was the restaurants fault. I don't have a car so I can't take the food back. Though it was only $19 for lunch, it was a total waste of my money and total waste of food. As someone who's new to the area and has worked for small businesses and in hospitality for 10+ years I know how important customer service is. I ordered an Americano here and was met with a dirty look and an eye roll when I asked the "barista" if I could add half and half. Sure she asked if I wanted it black but I'm not a regular here and didn't know that the milk was stashed behind the counter. Every cafe has a different way of doing this so the amount of attitude and burdened air the barista gave me for asking for half and half was embarrassing and hostile (note: it wasn't busy). To have this be my first interaction of the day was disappointing and bizarre. Everyone has bad days but I would never dream of treating a customer like a burden for such a small request. Also the americano was filled to the BRIM of the cup so full that if she hadn't poured some out it would have been dripping all over me as I walked away (not to mention the proportions of water to espresso made the drink very watery). Next time I'll know to give extremely detailed instructions here before ordering my drink if I ever have to come back which I won't be doing anytime soon.. read more

Believe it or not, it's easy to mess up avocado toast based on dozens of previous experiences at other cafes. Short grain takes great pride in their avocado toast. This is a must order item. Avocados were perfectly ripened, radishes were fresh, pickled onions were indeed pickled perfectly and egg was spectacular. For $9, it's a rather filling meal. Savor each bite because it's full of deliciousness. Vietnamese iced cold brew was fantastic as well! Vietnamese Coffee is one of those beverages that's hard to find in most cafes. Short Grain masters Vietnamese Cold Brew. Not too sweet, not too creamy; it compliments the avocado toast quite well. They use dark beans, so the Vietnamese Coffee has a nice bitter taste. What I particularly enjoyed about their coffee was it didn't weigh me down and make me feel like I just drank 100 grams of fat. Nice and light! Great beverage to grab and go. The cafe itself has about 5 tables and plenty of charging ports as well as complimentary WiFi. This is a nice little spot not far from the main streets of downtown Jersey City that offers a more cozy atmosphere. Both times I've been here I was doing work while grabbing a bite; and we all know that the cafe where we don't get toooo distracted is the place to get work done. The all day brunch is hands down the best part of the menu. They taste as good as they look and look as good as they taste. Check the photos! The other two items I've tried were the cauliflower and pork belly sandwich: looked appetizing but tasted okay. The sandwich was the biggest disappointment as my cuts of meat were 99% fat. Now I know pork belly is a fatty cut of meat (I'm a fan), but this sandwich only had the top part of the pork belly if you know what I mean. Like I was just eating belly... Couldn't waste my money and it was good for the few bites until it got too overwhelming. I just couldn't finish. Perhaps the chef was having a bad day. I can imagine how delicious it would taste had the ratio of meat and fat had been correct. On the bright side, Short Grain offers more than enough good to cover the bad. read more

Not a place to come to for a sausage egg and cheese. They give you one little link in a roll with some cheese. No ketchup. So salt. No pepper. The staff isn't friendly either. Vietnamese coffee might be the only thing worth getting. Much better spots to spend your money at in the area. read more

This is my all time favorite spot to dine at in Jersey City. The staff is absolutely WONDERFUL, and the food/drinks are even better. Lemon ricotta pancakes - I also usually never order pancakes when I go out because the taste ends up being too bland after a couple of bites. I gave in though after a couple of my friends raved about this dish. You can actually taste the lemon in every bite. Avocado toast - I usually try not to order this when I go to a cafe, thinking I can just make this myself. This spot got me good though, because the toast was STACKED. I was so full after eating it. I'm also just a sucker for feta cheese. Green eggs and spam - fun spin on what is usually a standard breakfast Matcha latte - just what I needed (Jersey City gets so windy sometimes!). I highly recommend this place if you just want to get a cup of coffee or go full beast mode and eat everything on the menu (like I sadly/but-not-so-sadly did #noregrets). I tried the coconut curry chicken bah mi and bubble tea. I really liked the bread, cilantro and pickled veggies they put on the sandwich. And it was so big and only $9. Bread was super fluffy anf crispy on the outside. Downside of it it was very very spicy. I actually couldn't finish it because of that. I didn't realize it was going to be so spicy, I assumed coconut curry would have been a cooler creamier version but it wasn't and I didn't taste any coconut flavor. I was excited to try black sesame bubble tea since I don't think the other cafes that have bubble tea around the area have this flavor. I love black sesame stuff and it was great. I ordered it with less ice and no added sugar. The downside was that the boba were at least a day old. Super hard and firm. Some where softer than others but 90% of them didn't taste fresh. I did like the flavor of the boba though, reminiscent of coffee for some reason. I bet they are really good when they are fresh. I want to come back again and see if they can make the sandwich less spicy. Overall cute and reasonably priced place. read more

Updating my review as I've finally come in for food. This review is going to be five stars, and this review is about one and one thing only. Short Grain's fantastic avocado toast. A bit pricey at 9$ but completely worth the splurge. A thick and hearty piece of toast smothered in pickled red onions, radishes, feta cheese and roasted red pepper flakes. You can also opt to have it with an egg on top. The toast is filling and definitely enough to make a meal out of. There are other tasty food options on the menu such as banh mi, rice bowls and ricotta pancakes, but next time I come in it'll be hard to resist the avocado toast. read more

Stopped in for breakfast a few days ago after reading some good reviews. I ordered the pork belly sandwich and it was great. The crunchy outside of the bread is a perfect texture counterpoint to the soft belly. The sandwich is slightly reminiscent of a Banh mi. The pork is served with a hoisin sauce which makes it sweet so the pickled onions and the cucumbers compliment it very nicely. Overall an extremely well rounded dish. The avocado toast was also delicious. Crunchy, creaminess, light acidity. I would recommend both. Also ordered a croissant, which they get from Balthazar and bake on premises. While the price wasn't cheap (about $40 with two coffees) it was certainly delicious and the staff was very friendly. Make your way over. I'm sure you'll ENJOY!!! read more

Ordered Takeout and got the Pork Adobo and Vietnamese Coffee. Adobo was DELICIOUS and they gave a generous serving size! Vegetables were fresh, and the delivery was fast from Jersey city to Secaucus. My only con is that I would suggest 2 eggs instead of 1 (if you so choose) since it's so heavy on the avocado, especially for breakfast. But great none the less. And yet another new place opens up in Jersey City. I'm not completely sure what the concept is at Short Grain is but if I'd have to guess, it seems to focus off fresh and simple ingredients. The menu is quite small- 3 or so brunch items, a handful of sandwiches, and 3 small plates. They also have coffee and pastries and such. Since they just opened, I am not sure if they plan to expand their menu but I hope they do. There is seating for about 10 people inside (3 tables) along with a couple of tables outside so it's a pretty small place. I ordered the avocado toast and cold brew. The avocado toast was super fresh and really nicely seasoned. I loved the addition of pickles onions as they complimented the creamy avocado nicely. The cold brew was really good as well- some of the better coffee I've had for sure. I feel the prices are just a tad high. I paid around $15 for the two items and the avocado toast was not a huge portion at $9. The cold brew was definitely on the high side as well. To their credit, the ingredients seem to be high quality. I'm curious to see if they add more menu options and will probably be back at some point to try more. read more

Another fabulous brunch spot to add to my collection! Short Grain has a unique menu wish offers the typical avocado toast to banh mi to savory bowls...yum! Upon my first visit I had the avocado toast with an egg. There was a little kick of heat to it and the onions gave it a nice, sharp contrast. I also had the hot chocolate was was quite yummy and satisfying on a cold morning. My friend ordered the lemon ricotta hot cakes- these did not just have a subtle hint of lemon...these were packed with lemon goodness. The fruit which accompanied the hot cakes gave it a nice bit of freshness as well. We also tried the cortado and that was great. There is limited seating inside but we were lucky enough to snag the last table for two. Also side note, their playlist which was on during our visit was on point! Any Ari fans out there? Neighborhood gem and walked by many times. Today ordered via Uber Eats on my lazy Sunday. First thing I ate-the fresh rice paper rolls and wow very fresh and refreshing-the mint inside with avocado and shrimp were just the right hint of flavor taste for an appetizer. I will definitely ordering this on a regular basis. It was so good and best I've had for Vietnamese fresh rice paper rolls!!! Being half Filipino had to try the pork adobo- lots of flavor and tastes similar to Filipino version only thing different is Filipino versions have a soupy sauce porridge on the meat to mix with the rice. So to me it was a bit dry the meat. The roasted cauliflower on the side was tasty thinking it would have been a bit more broiled, seemed undercooked to be called "roasted" on the menu. The market salad on side was tasty due to the picked red onions on top therefore no need for a dressing. It was all shoved tight in the bowl but it is take out so presentation is not as important as flavors which was winning in that category for the most part. Will stop by in person for outdoor patio when it is warm for real like 70s to review on presentation in person. read more

I was craving pancakes to showcase on my blog today and since I was in Jersey City this eatery popped up so I went. I lucked out on parking right in front the restaurant and that's rare in this area. I walked in (wasn't even greeted) and sat down for a good 10 mins thinking a waiter was going to take my order but apparently you have to order at the counter. Then proceeded to order their famous lemon ricotta pancakes and their hot matcha latte too. I saw that they had a good latte art on yelp and just had to experience myself but was disappointed. I'm not sure of the barista's name but when I asked if he could make it look artsy so I can post on my blog but he didn't seem like he was in the mood to do so. I found that to be really odd because if a customer is asking for something that's on your menu as a restaurant you should do whatever it takes to make your customer happy. This incident really rubbed me the wrong way and instantly killed my mood. After 10 mins, I received my latte and was highly disappointed to see that it didn't have any artsy flair to it but simply plain like any ordinary latte. Also, the matcha itself didn't taste like the Japanese matcha that I'm used to so I didn't continue drinking it. Thankfully, my pancakes were delicious and didn't have any complaints about them. They were $10 with tax, included 3 pancakes, warm honey, strawberries, and blueberries. My only suggestion for them is to have maple syrup in their restaurant just in case a customer wants it especially since it needed a little more syrup. I probably won't return to this restaurant due to the poor service and the attitude I received. read more

Tried this for the first time, ordered pickup online. The coffee tasted like warm water and the lemon ricotta pancakes were completely burnt and inedible. The syrup was poured in the bottom of the pancake container instead of having a separate condiment container. read more

Stopped by for a weekday brunch at this charming little spot. Starting off, coffee was okay - lacked depth and aroma. Green eggs with spam was surprisingly interesting and good. The salsa verde really ties things together well. But it does have SPAM so ladies be ware if you don't like that. Slow roasted pork belly was very flavorful - it's basically a bahn mi vietnamese sandwich. Pork belly was succulent and thick-cut and bread was crispy. I would've liked a bit more vinegar onion to counteract the fatty pork as it was quite rich. Good lunch bite. Place is a bit smallish so be ware if coming at peak morning hours. I would have to try more items to have better understanding but the overall bright vibe, helpful staff, and interesting items give this easy 4 stars. read more

Short Grain is a Vietnamese-inspired brunch place. They have the usual brunch items (yogurt bowls, avo toast, pancakes, etc.) and within that mix, a few Vietnamese staples. I can't vouch for the authenticity of the Vietnamese food, but I can tell you that their food is delicious and justifiably priced! I ordered the granola bowl and the avocado toast on multigrain with a fried egg, and the dirty chai. The bowl and avocado toast were both satisfactory! Nothing that I would change on either of them. The avocado toast was perfectly seasoned and the yogurt granola bowl was well balanced with fruit and granola. The chai was a little too bitter for my liking but it wasn't undrinkable. I also tried my friend's Roasted Cauliflower small plate and that was the best thing I had in ages! The cauliflower was served cold with a green sauce which made all the difference!
