The ice cream is FABULOUS. SERIOUSLY FABULOUS. However, the service is horrible. The lady who waited on us was rude, grumpy, possibly annoyed, somewhat checked out, mildly disgusted?, etc. She spoke to my kind, elderly (Native Hawaiian) mother with disrespect and disregard. She gave the impression that she was doing us a favor by filling our orders. A middle-aged couple who had finished their ice cream outside, stood and looked at the toys through the window, and she seemed presumably affronted, giving a look of lip curling disgust at them while she was still working to complete our 'ohana's ice cream cones. What in the world?!? Maybe because we're from Hawai'i, my expectations were too high?? Maybe it was a one off? (Looking at the reviews that make similar observations though...I don't think that's the case). I have no idea what the deal was. She treated everyone who came in with obvious disdain. My mom never wants to go back there. So sad because it's delicious!!! This is a "thing" for my family. My parents love it. My aunt and uncle's family loves it, and, when they dragged me, kicking and screaming (Just kidding) to try the ice cream, I loved it. We were in Chico for a football game/birthday weekend. We stayed at the Quality Inn located directly across the street from Shubert's. One night after dinner we walked across the street for a sweet treat. The first thing we noticed is the welcoming atmosphere we saw with benches and tables outside where you could enjoy your treat. Inside is cute and intimate and has a fun layout. I noticed lots of candy and nick-knacks for your enjoyment. A full line up of ice cream flavors and plenty of ways for it to be served...scoops, sundaes, cones etc. The only reason for a four star rating we thought the prices were a little too high. If it came to judging this company based on their ice cream, I'd give them a solid 5; however, I have to deduct 4 stars for bad service and inconsistency among servers. I should be able to get the same type of sundae or banana split from all servers. If I point out the inconsistency, then you should remedy the situation, not argue about it. This ice cream shop is super cute. ;))) and has this old town vintage vibe which is makes you feel super nostalgic. As I entered the shop no one welcomed me but I understand ish since the cashier lady was busy with another customer. Right away someone from the back came out to help me out, which totally redeemed my experience. They have a lot of chocolate and candy in the store but that does make the store feel a bit crowded and I really wish they had one or two chairs/tables etc inside for people to sit at and enjoy their ice cream. They are missing out on that vibe. Kinda hoped it would feel as jolly as it looked. I like the variety of ice cream they have and they do have a few different flavors from the generic ice cream flavors but at the end of the day they still feel not innovative or adventurous. The girl that served me didn't take the time to wash her hands before grabbing the cone and scooping, which was alarming. She also wasn't particularly friendly. Cutest little store - emphasis on the little in terms of the size of the store. Shubert's was right across from my hotel and I couldn't help but go and explore. The store was a lot smaller than I expected; it was very crowded on Saturday and there was literally no room to move. I love eyeing the truffles and chocolates behind the glass, but I never seem to walk out of the store with them. They make some of their own candy and sell candy that appears to be made elsewhere (I saw the exact same Easter eggs, like the peanut butter eggs, at another local candy shop in Folsom, CA).
