Shubert's is an iconic place similar to Marianne's Ice Cream in Santa Cruz. They just don't make olde fashioned neighbourhood places like this any more! This is the place of first dates, report card awards, after game meet ups, and warm summer evenings with Family. Despite a "Downtown" location, this place is a little challenging to find, but my overflowing, dripping, and delicious cone has always been worth the journey and any wait. Shubert's Ice Cream & Candy has been owned by the same family and has remained in its original location since it was first opened in 1938. The ice creams are all handmade in shop and often with local ingredients. I personally like the Chico Mint (chocolate ice cream with handmade mint chips), although there are many times when I just couldn't decide. Shubert's also sells Pez dispensers, French candies, and novelty toys, but for me that's simply window dressing to the main attraction. read more

Their icecream is rich, smooth and creamy, without being overly fatty or icy. They keep it at a perfect temperature. They have those giant cones, about the size of your foot. or, you can have a baby scoop the size of a golfball. You've got to be crazy not to think this is the most exceptional ice cream parlor that exists. People from Sacramento California will drive here just for their ice cream. They offer unusual unique flavors, like licorice at Halloween time (my mom's favorite). My brother makes sure my mom gets a a half gallon every year for her October birthday. If you are ever in downtown Chico, you MUST visit Shubert's Ice Cream! I read on their official website that they are voted one of the 2 best ice creams in the whole nation. When you walk in, you'll see a lot of candy in the store. They make their own chocolates, and everything looks so good! I decided to order a scoop of their hand made almond chocolate ice cream. Iconic icecream parlor and sweet shop. This place is exactly what you picture an icecream parlor would look like stepping back through time. There are lots of icecream flavors to choose from and making that choice is truly the hardest part. I jokingly (mostly) asked my party if they would judge me if I got multiple scoops. The icecream was a fantastic consistency right between hard scoop and soft serve. Very smooth and easy to eat. We were already stuffed from the giant burgers at Nobby's, but someone had the bright idea that we had to also add ice cream to the menu, so insisted we visit the Chico favorite, Shubert's while there for a recent weekend. I won't lie and say they dragged me there against my will, since I have been known to love ice cream now and then. . . Well, I'm pleased to report: It was incredible! They make it all there, the same family for eons. It's a cute little place, tucked off the main drag of Chico and definitely worth searching for when you're up in this that part of the state. Just tried this place last night and even though it was busy, the staff was able to get through the line pretty quickly and we didn't feel rushed. My boyfriend and I got a Hot Fudge Sundae and a Banana split. The chocolate fudge is super rich so we felt like we could have done without it on both items. The total was about 10 bucks but for what we got it didn't seem too bad at all. Super filling! I should have only gotten the 1 scoop but the scoops are big! All three flavors that we got were really good but I felt like we needed to know the menu more before ordering just because they had so many options! We got vanilla, pistachio, and strawberry -delis! I'm really dying to try a shake because I'm more of a shake person. I do wish there were tables inside to sit down at but the benches outside were just fine too, will defiantly be back to this place, well worth it. read more

We were staying across the street at the Quality Inn and noticed this super cute place and how packed it was. Being that it was a million degrees at almost 10pm we stopped in to check it out and cool off. The servers were cute and friendly. I loved the fact that there was not an overwhelming list of flavors to choose from (I have a hard time picking lol). I got just a scoop of the Chico mint and it was really good. My husband got a malt. That was just meh. Flavor was not very "malty" and there was way too much milk in it. But this is an ice-cream and candy shop not a malt shop so we'll forgive it this time. After hearing about Shubert's through my school orientation at Chico and hearing that it was awarded 2nd place for best scoop of ice cream by Good Morning America I had to check it out. My mother and I sampled the chocolate amaretto which was creamy with a hint of amaretto that made it melt in your mouth. The next savory flavor we sampled was the seasonal boysenberry. The boysenberry was by far the best of all. The ice cream was rich and creamy and you could taste the whole boysenberries. I ended up with a waffle cone with a scoop of boysenberry topped with a yummy scoop of black cherry (another favorite). My mother ended up with a scoop of chocolate amaretto and boysenberry. (Both were about $4 a piece) As we were leaving we saw that they had chocolate dipped bananas that had been made a few hours before. The banana tasted fresh and the chocolate was a nice Guittard dark chocolate. Best of all if your on a budget the bananas are only $1. read more

While the traditional mint ice cream with chocolate chips is a favorite of mine, something about Chico Mints' reverse combo of chocolate ice cream with mint chips makes it all that much better. We also enjoy their various chocolate Easter eggs and always buy at least one of each kind every spring. I have been frequenting Schubert's regularly since my first visit to Chico (stayed at the adjacent Thunderbird), on thru several years of living here. I am a sucker for oldschool eateries that haven't changed much in their decades of business (LOVED Marianne's when we lived in Santa Cruz) That said, I have been consistently disappointed by two basics at Schuberts for the past 5 years of living here: 1) Unfriendly employees/poor customer service 2) Price/Value They could improve one or the other of these things, and vastly improve their customers' experiences. You can't charge close to 3 bucks for a smaller-than-average scoop of corn syrup-based ice cream, and act like a totally bored teenager simultaneously. I hate to say it, but I have to agree with another reviewer- Schubert's has become lazy with age and over-popularity, buoyed more by its ambience and nostalgia than its value, customer service, or its ice cream quality. If you're in Chico and want something delicious and homemade and local in the ice cream department, try La Flor de Michoacan on Nord Ave in the Safeway stripmall. They have the usual chocolate mint, etc, AND flavors like fresh kiwi or tequila read more

House made ice cream, candies and treats, oh my! I always go with the Chico Mint. A classic. Made with Shubert's own bittersweet chocolate ice cream and generous handfuls of the crushed up Shuberts mints (white chocolate mints), how could I ever go for anything else? Except maybe the Walnut ice cream! The smell of Shuberts homemade confections always makes me smile, regardless of how the day went. I walk in, take a whiff and feel better. It is soo hard not to buy all the candy in the shop. I love staring at the displays and playing with the candy toys in there. I came here all the time with my grandfather, and he sadly is no longer with us. But every time I think of Chico, I think of my grandpa ( and playing in his upholstery shop), Cruces Classic cars ( which has been closed for a long time) and Shuberts Ice Cream. read more
