Shy Bird is definitely a good spot for a decent meal. I usually order takeout from the restaurant but it was my first time dining in person at the South Boston location the other night. Over the years, I've tried their Whole Bird, Ranch Fried Chicken Sandwich, Rosemary & Black Pepper Fries, House Salad, and a few things from the brunch menu. Their Whole Bird has always been consistent with a flavorful skin but occasionally runs a bit dry, especially in areas of white meat. I absolutely love the rosemary fries, which are cut super thin and have a great crunch. I don't really enjoy the house salad and would not recommend ordering it as a side as it is a very plain salad. I've quite enjoyed the fried chicken sandwich and its sauces give it a nice tang and spice kick. The sandwich does get a bit overwhelming on the flavor once you are half way through and I found myself washing the taste down with plenty of water. I would say that Shy Bird is a bit pricey for the kind of food they serve. Though some items are good, the portions are a bit small and the quality is slightly below what I would expect when I'm paying the same costs at another restaurant. However, not many restaurants will serve you a whole rotisserie chicken so Shy Bird can definitely check that craving off for you! The ambiance of the restaurant is pretty nice as well, each table was decorated and they offer outdoor dining as well. read more

Went for Sunday brunch with a friend and in a word - WOW. We were seated quickly. Water and coffee to the table. We ordered the pretzel for an appetizer -- no snickering until you have had it. The dipping sauce is a divine mustard flavor. She had the chicken benedict and I had the breakfast wrap. The wrap had a perfect crunch, the eggs were soft and buttery. And they included a small green salad that was delicious. The chicken portion was huge. She told me some of the best chicken she has had in a long time. So service and food were stunning. I've visited the Kendall Square location once and recently got to visit this one. Both experiences were great, the atmosphere is almost exactly the same and the food is so delicious. I know you'd want to order the rotisserie chicken since it's a staple, but everything else I ate was just as amazing. My table ordered the spicy shrimp skewers, sb dunks (fried chicken bites), dressed cucumbers, and warm kinderhook cheese as apps/sides. 100% would order each and every one of these items again. For my meal I got an umami grain bowl with rotisserie chicken. This was also such a great meal, and after devouring the appetizers I had to take half of my bowl home. Our waiters were very kind and attentive, constantly refilling our cups and engaging in conversation with us. Came here for wfh shybird, where it's 20 for a meal and unlimited drinks from 9-3 pm. Food and beverages were fine. The major drawback was how loud they blasted the music all day. We asked the manager to turn down the music and she refused, saying that it would make the music too quiet for those sitting outside. If you're advertising yourselves as a good place to wfh, I think it's reasonable to keep the music at a level where it's not droning through sound cancelling headphones. read more

I took my wife here with some friends from out of town and we were super impressed with both the service and the flavor explosion that the chef provided with our meal. Went there to work due to a wifi problem at my humble abode. I was one of two or three people there at the time (maybe around 10:30am?) and I was helped right away by a very friendly host/waiter. Had some good tasting berry tea and the breakfast burrito was delicious. I was able to connect to one of three Wi-Fis they have available, and was also able to go upstairs into a small meeting room for a Zoom call I had. I love this place! The staff is so nice and professional. Maybe I'm just lucky but it hasn't been horribly crowded or loud anytime I have gone either. Ordering chicken is always a gamble because most places over cook and under season it. I am happy to say Shy bird does neither. I ordered the lentil bowl with mushrooms and asparagus with the rotisserie chicken and it was super flavorful. The chicken was juicy and tender and all my veggies were cooked perfectly and even had a little spiciness.. We also ordered a side of the SB dunks which are chunks of breaded, fried chicken with dipping sauces like barbecue, pecorino ranch ect. They too were cooked perfectly and I was so happy to see they used all white non processed meat. Like eating chicken nuggets that have had a major upgrade. I've been to shy bird twice since they opened in the Southie neighborhood. Both times have been pleasant experiences. First time we tried the dunks and grain bowls. Second time we tried the whole bird and some side dishes. The whole bird was probably the best thing we've had so far. It was very juicy and flavorful. Even the breasts were juicy which was impressive. We got the sauce flight which included a creamy sauce, tangy sauce, bbq, and other classics. I do wish there was a spicy or citrus sauce option. There's a large bar in the middle of the restaurant that serves up some classic cocktails. There's always open seating here even during peak times so no need to worry if you don't have a reservation. We tried Shybird for the first time. We made a reservation online, but opted for bar seats. It was a decent crowd for a Monday holiday. The staff including host, bartenders, food runners were all friendly. I ordered the cucumber appetizer, my husband the chicken nugget appetizer, bith were tasty. I then had the steelhead trout with parsnip and roast potato. I asked for the mustard sauce on the side and was very pleased that I did because it did not need it, was delicious! The SB Dunks are overly salty, greasy, fried chicken that is too old and hard to eat. The Harissa Bowl was not any better either. It's mostly very greasy rice and quinoa, however they are not listed as ingredients in the menu. To top it off, the quinoa was not entirely cooked. It is all going in the trash. They automatically add a 4% kitchen appreciation fee without telling you. They suggest 18% minimum tip when ordering take out. Good job on the paper containers. read more

Have been dying to try out this spot ever since I got a taste of the chicken. I had it cold and day old AND if was freaking delicious! Had to go in person and try it hot and fresh. Needless to say it didn't disappoint. The space wasn't too big and gave a cozy but slightly industrial feel to the space. We sat at the bar area in high top booths. Our server, Dillion, did a great job even though it was only his 2nd day. We started off with the premium room temp tap water that they bring to every table and a cocktail called Under The Counter (very refreshing and tropical with coconut, pineapple and orange). Surprisingly the tap water was quite good and no weird aftertaste of chemicals or minerals. We started off with the Dinner for 2 (whole bird, fries and greens salad with the pecorino ranch as our sauce choice). This combination was really wonderful and a balanced meal. The green salad was lightly dressed and served as a palate cleanser for me. The pecorino ranch sauce is my all time favorite after trying all the sauces. We couldn't stop eating the chicken (moist, tender, well cooked and seasoned) and before long it was all gone. We wanted more but alas the chicken was sold out shortly after 7:30pm. Definitely, go early and order more than you think especially if there is a big eater in your group. . We also order the Roasted Cauliflower with lemon aioli but didn't taste like lemon aioli. It was good but would have preferred the cauliflower to be cooked a bit longer and have more char. Some of the bigger pieces were still quite hard to eat. The SB Dunks with Chipotle BBQ wasn't my favorite. I felt the chicken breast nuggets were a bite dry compared to the whole chicken. The side order of Rosemary and Black Pepper Fries was addicting enough I had to order another one We finished our meal with the Pretzel appetizer with Honey Mustard. Since there was no chicken to be had Looked at the dessert menu but it was lack luster for me. There was no chocolate dessert of any kind. Closest was a chocolate chip cookie but alas it contains almond flour and I'm allergic. Can't wait for warmer weather to go back and sit in the patio. I can see that they are using their email base in an attempt to influence voters to vote against question 5 on the ballot. Question 5 refers to wait staff being paid min. wage before tips. This erroneous email spews nothing but greed and selfishness and the owners should be highly ashamed of themselves for allowing it. An email like this tells me they don't actually care about their employees, they just want profit. I usually go for the Work from Shy Bird and love the experience almost every time, but my most recent visit was disappointing. I had reservation of three, we were initially seated at a booth. Shortly after the female manger approached me in a very unprofessional and rude manner. She told us we have to move outside (it was raining) or to a small cramped community table that already had multiple people sitting there, due to the fact that we were doing the Work from Shy Bird special they needed the booths open for lunch. The problem wasn't us moving it was the way she delivered it. She didn't approach us in a polite or considerate way at all. She was very dismissive and if I wasn't with friends I would've just left, her lack of courtesy, was the main issue. After being moved to the small cramped table we were left waiting for 25 minutes without anyone asking what we wanted to order. To make matters even worse, I noticed other guest were being sat at the booths with the Work from Shy Bird menu. While the food may be great the poor service and lack of the manger's professionalism completely overshadowed it. read more
