Was looking for a quick to go meal in the area and was craving rice noodles so decided on Siam Sunset. Ordering online was quick and ready by the time indicated. Siam sunset is located in a more run down area and only street parking available. Once you're inside, there are many tables and was filled with local Thai community. A great hole in the wall Thai breakfast spot in Thai Town! My friend and I visited for some breakfast on an early Saturday morning and our experience here was pretty good. We shared all the dishes we ordered: - Pork Porridge: Warm, comforting and full of meat! This was delicious and I liked the amount of juicy pork meatballs in this dish. The savory flavor and fresh ginger were also great. - Chinese Donut: Crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. These were yummy dipped in the condensed milk and the porridge. Wish they were fresher though, we saw they were just sitting out. - Fried Leek Cakes: Crispy and tasty, but a bit too heavy. We also weren't sure if the inside was fully cooked. After an early morning hike my friends asked if I wanted to have some breakfast. When I was asked if I was interested in a Thai breakfast I was super interested. I've never had Thai food other than the typical dishes everyone knows. Located in Thai town Siam Sunset is a small shop connected to a motel structure. Its really easy to miss. Again, I've never had or even heard of Thai breakfast items so this was a total treat for me. We ordered several items on the menu like rice porridge, kai grata, chinese donuts and others. We came on a Friday morning for late breakfast/early lunch, and upon walking in we saw so many older Thai-speaking people ordering their regular breakfasts and socializing. For our group of 5, we ordered a lot because we were excited. We got three of their special beverages, we had to pay for bottled water otherwise. The selection of fried rices, noodle dishes, and curries was wider than most other places in LA. The server was helpful in making sure we had a balanced meal of carbs, meat, and veggies. Had lunch here a few days ago for the first time... The restaurant feels very homey and has authentic food items!! We got 2 items, the catfish and Siam Sunset Noodle. Not a lot of people talk enough about the catfish, which I believe was the star item. The fish had a moist texture, and its thick chili curry sauce elevated the spiced flavor it carried. $2.50 for soy milk with like 3 toppings in it (tofu skin, barley and clear boba) !!! Yummy!! Ginger tofu wasn't that great. The ginger soup was good but the tofu was not silky enough. Boat flat noodle was ok. It was a bit salty and it was lacking something that I can't think of. Maybe it was a mix Thai Chinese restaurant so it didn't have the authentic Thai boat noodle flavor? I dunno Crab meat noodle was one of my fav because there was so much crab in it. Also, the egg noodle was so good. The only downside was TOO MANY SHELLS in the noodle. We ordered a variety of dishes, and each was delicious and flavorful. I would definitely come back. The food was great Thai food. They don't offer cups of water you have to buy water bottles individually. The server came up every minute to ask if we were ready to order and it felt very rushed even though there was no one else in the restaurant. They only accept cash and Zelle but they do have an atm. Sad to see this spot go down hill. The Chinese donuts were tough and day old. The server rushed us to order multiple times and also tried to upsell on soup. She came back a few times asking if we wanted to order even more food even though we already had 5 dishes. When we got the bill, they snuck in $11 which they took off blaming the cash register, but I have a feeling they were trying to squeeze as much money from us as possible. When you miss Thailand. You look for these street food dishes e.g. Kao Mun Gai, B.B.Q pork, Crispy pork and Rosted duck Rice dishes. Price is great as well but they only accept cash so please be prepared. Yelp said they open everyday. But! The sign said they close on Tuesday. On the way in I was contemplating the ground pork but pivoted when I saw the spicy curry with Thai spaghetti on the specials menu. ($5.95?!!) A straightforward dish with sprouts, basil and some cut-up string beans, this gets better as it goes along when you get deeper into the curry, which I'm guessing is coconut-based. I was intrigued by pictures of some of the other options like pork noodle soup. It's hard to exactly put in into words, but between the food, the outstanding service and the setting, Siam Sunset is essentially the ideal example of a neighborhood that you might not know about but shouldn't miss. read more

It's so ginger-ish! packed of spices. perfect soup for winter. Long-Kang juice was impressive but I'm not really juice guy so I just took a sip. Let's talk about meal. We had Kouy-Jub (big flat noodle in herbal black soup with intestines, livers, pork blood, and fried tofu. Mouy-Jub soup was full of flavors. But not too salty, nor sweet. Noodle was a bit harsh hut overall was great!!!!. 8/10 Khao-Kloog-ka-pi( shrimp paste fried rice) with many elements; chili, lime slice, sweeten pork, scramble egg, shredded raw mango. Mix all together and cheers! Guarantee the taste same as Thailand! Must order! Next one was a full platter of duck, roasted pork, and crispy pork belly. The portion was large and easily filled up the whole party. Well, I think I wrote too long so to conclude, I'd say Siam Sunset is a gem in Thai-town LA. The food is absolutely delicious! My table had the duck noodles (with soup and dry), chicken and rice, pad see ew, and larb. So fresh and flavorful, all for a great price. But one of the highlights for me is the staff. I left my bag with wallet and ID at the table and didn't realize until the next day, when they were closed. Chayyasit (James) actually called me and returned my bag, safe and sound. I offered a tip as a thank-you, but he just smiled and did not accept the tip. Many years ago I review this place. It was my favorite original Thai restaurant. I've been coming here for almost 40 years. Travel over an hour just to have authentic Thai food that cannot be found anywhere other than in Thailand. Even during Covid, the place was going strong. Price, foods, service was typical Thai hospitality. Then I learned that the place has changed ownership, Why? Today I travel there again in hope that the place remains the same. NOPE! No more parking in the lot, the place seems run down. A place that on this normal Saturday afternoon, where there use to be waiting lines. A place with 20 tables but just 2 was occupied. The menu changed with the time as is the prices, now comes the foods. I ordered my usual feel good food 'Guy Chap', fried Chinese chives. It hasn't changed, tho 30% more in cost. But what gripes me is they always ask what would I like to drink, not this time. Foods. Same out quickly ( only 2 tables ), and 3/4 finished with the food, I had to request water. Not the waitress but some dude ( the new owner, I assume) came back with a warm bottle water and wanting me to pay for water. He looked at me and ask do I still want it? I said no and took the tips I was going to give and bought cold bottles at 7/11 nearby. It ب_ب what Covid did to the world. But I considered myself as family to them. Siam on Sunset instantly joins the restaurant rotation, especially for early mornings when I'm not hungover. They open at 6am and often sell out of the crueller/donuts by 9am. "Everything is good" is often unhelpful advice when you're ordering but it is true here. Below is a ranked list but I would re-order each and every one. 05. Rice Porridge with Duck 37. Pad Kra Pao with Pork 57. Roast Duck Noodle Soup 26. Combination 09. Pork Blood Soup I absolutely love the jok or rice porridge here. Finally, a beautifully thick congee (粥) that will warm your stomach and is gently flavored with white pepper, scallions, and ginger. Even better that they also have rice soup (稀飯) on the menu! I'd really like to try the 59. Goi Jub (Kuay Jab) next time which has offal, pork blood, pork, tofu, and boiled eggs. They overcharge the bill and try to not give back change bill so they can get those as tip. Chicken Hianam Rice was alright. Chinese donut was fresh. Ice coffee was ok. While I was dining there, I asked for cup of water. They said they don't offer water, only sell bottle of water. The upsell, really ? A restaurant in America, can't even give out free tap water ? Price on the menu and this were my order : chicken rice : 11:50, Chinese donut 1.50 for 2 pieces. Ice coffee : 2.50 Total : $18 (should have been $16 before tax) What Hollywood sale tax account to 2 dollar on top. The server came to take my $20 bill and said have a good day, expecting that I'm not going to ask for the change. I stare right to the cashier (probably owner) and they took a while to come by my table to give the $2 change. Mind you, I was the only customer dining there on Friday 7am. I knew at this point the business was trying to push for the tip, so I just awkwardly got up and left the tip. I just left a $4 tip on a $16 meal that take CASH only place. I love coming here for breakfast, yes, breakfast! The food is fresh and authentic. I've had many different Thai food joints but they usually open late. This one, opens early! The service is phenomenal! Staff are very polite and efficient. They provide excellent service for a small mom and pops joint. Granted it's connected to a hotel, so you gotta look for the hotel to find this restaurant. I enjoyed the food, I normally order a lot more but today wasn't too hungry. Their pad kee Mao was a tad bit spicy for mild which is pretty solid. Noodles were flavorful and protein were quality. Wasn't chewy and was tender. They will run out of Chinese donuts easily 2 hours after opening. The average wait time on a Sat/Sun for take out is 30-40 minutes. Siam Sunset is located in the same plaza as a motel. Strange isn't it? Every time I got sick and had a doctor's appointment at Kaiser, my mom would take me here for Jok and soy milk. Thai Jok and Chinese Jok doesn't taste the same. It's hard to explain, but boiled rice isn't all equal. The nostalgia I've experienced at Siam Sunset has now been wiped away. The prices are affordable and cheap for the large serving size. The flavors are just meh. Perhaps I was wearing rosey covered glasses. I did only come when I was sick as a child. Thai people in LA eat here. It's easy to make but we just don't make it ourselves. We ordered 4 dishes for 2 people (we were quite hungry), and it came out to about $32, such a good deal. We ordered the combo rice, the pork blood soup, the leek pancakes, and the special menu noodle dish. The pork blood soup was BY FAR my favorite - it has the jackpot of all the good stuff (lots of pork blood, intestines, livers, kidneys). It's probably not for those who aren't as adventurous with their food. I also love soup, so I may be a little biased. The combo rice reminded me of the Chinese rice plates you find at Chinese restaurants, so it was just ok to me. The special menu noodle dish was a hit!
