This place hasn't not changed their recipes for over 20 years! My friends & I call this place "Ghetto Thai" but it endearing to us because the food is delicious that is in the hood! I came right when it opened and ordered a pad thai, pad see ew, and tom yum noodle soup. I saw everyone recommended the beef jerky so I got it too. The beef jerky was a good move--it was salty and satisfyingly chewy while the sauce gave it a really good tang. The pad thai and pad see ew was great--there was a really nice char on the noodles and good proportion of noodle, meat, and veggie. My only complaint was that it came very greasy. I've been coming here for years. My grandma loved this place. We now come on special occasions. I went this past Sunday with my mom and literally ordered the whole menu. Jk. Dishes: Crying Tiger 9/10 Beef was a little over cooked for my liking. Panang Curry Medium with chicken 10/10 Flavor was on point. Seafood soup 10/10 The soup had enough fish, shrimp. The best part is that they include the lemon grass. It really makes a difference in the flavor Combination fried rice 10/10 I can devour the whole plate of rice. It's so flavorful that you'll be dreaming about if for a few days. One thing to note is that it tastes better with a little bit of lemon. Combination chow mein 9/10 The protein was cooked to perfection. The only thing is that the noodles were leaking a bit of flavor. Shrimp Pri King 11/10 I believe this is the name of this dish. The shrimp and vegetables all come well together. This dish has Chinese long beans, basil, red and green bell pepper. One thing. Make sure that you check your receipt. Last Saturday my bride and I had time on our hands because our beloved Trojans didn't kickoff til 7:30pm. So we trekked over to Thai Town in East Hollywood with hopes of rediscovering the vintage Thai cuisine and an authentic Thai scalp massage -more on that later- that I usta regularly treat myself to when I lived in Thai Town for eighteen months after graduating from college. If my goal was to regale Leti with the upper crust restaurants that firmly imprinted Thailand's savory cuisine on the LA dining scene, then I would've gone straight to Jitlada, Sanamluang or Hoy-Ka. But today's objective was to recreate the look and feel about how I first discovered Thai food on my first post-college job, thirty three summers ago. So we found ourselves near the intersection of Normandie and Melrose, where Khun Dhom and the world's smallest parking lot greet you with all the subtlety of a fiery Thai chile pepper! I'd already warned my bride on the long drive over from Diamond Bar regarding the small, family run restaurant's relative lack of stylistic flair. Khun Dhom appears to be a family run affair, and as we Yelpers know- Sometimes the best and most authentic recipes come straight outtve "hole in the wall" establishments! We ordered a small ton of food- Egg rolls, 2 Kung Pao Chicken dishes of varying spiciness, Chicken Pad Thai and Pineapple Pork Fried Rice. The sole mistake we made? I shoulder ALL of the blame for, because we knowingly violated one of my few cardinal rules: When in doubt, order the house specialty; And, never order non-regional entrees from international cuisines. In other words, why on earth order KUNG PAO CHICKEN from a Thai restaurant!!! We subsequently compounded our mistake by doubling up on it, ordering a medium heat version for me and a "hot as you can make it" for my fiery-tongued bride!! As the photo attests, we got what we deserved: The world's lamest and most "Albino" looking take on Kung Pao, ever!!! The chicken wasn't pan-fried, the peanuts weren't caramelized and it sorely lacked any of the green onions and decadent, almost faintly chocolatey mouth feel of great Kung pao!! If this was golf and I was afforded a mulligan (a do-over) I'd gladly would've substituted the Chicken Satay, Angel Wings or Papaya Salad! But, whew boy, Khun Dhom delivered like a champion on the THAI dishes! The Chicken Pad Thai was so good I was licking my plate of leftovers back at home!! The egg rolls were abundant (six), glassy, shiny and unctuous. My son's Pineapple Pork Fried Rice was riven with bug crunchy Cashews and wok'd to a beautiful caramel sheen. THIS IS the wondrous Khun Dhom that I first discovered as a baby-faced college grad, when $10 got me both a Pad Thai and an egg rolls. The times and prices have rocketed by...but sheeeeeeeeit, getting five entrees, two sides and a drink for $65 isn't too shabby! Pro tips: The cramped parking lot and dingy, sparsely lit, malodorous bathrooms aren't for the faint of heart! Keep that in mind before draining half of your days water ration before arrival! The brother and sister (?!?) duo who run the front of the house work their fannies off with a constant stream of dine-in and takeout orders. Pls don't skimp on tipping them lavishly. read more

I've have been passing by this restaurant for almost 20 years, and I never gave it a try. Last Sunday I came to this restaurant for the first time, and it did not disappoint. The pad see ew was amazing, very flavorful, fresh, and the Chinese broccoli in it was very crunchy. The seafood soup was amazing, there is actually real crab in their soup. As for the crab fried rice, it was soooo good. The rice was fluffy and they added a lot of crab in it (the crab was real btw). You can taste the char on the rice, which elevates the flavor. I also ordered a large Thai ice tea, and the Thai ice tea was enormous, and it was also really good. I'll definitely come back here. The chairs in the restaurant are very uncomfortable though lol. read more

The food is so much more fresher, it has the small store hidden gem atmosphere, and more than anything the service may be a 4.5/ or 4/5 at times, they try their best to get you what you need. This place is close by so I'm trying to figure out what's gonna be my go to wherever I don't want to cook. So far I have had: chowmein, pad see ew, green curry, beef jerky, and shrimp coconut soup. The coconut shrimp soup is the reason I've been coming back and it's so good I'm certain there's something else I'll love. The jerky was a surprise, it was recommended by our server. Work bro took me and work crew here since this place was near his house. The place was small, the parking lot was small, and to get to the restroom was definitely an adventure. What was not small was the menu. Oh my, so many selections and so hard to pick. We decided going family style and ordered duck salad, chicken pad see eew, combo meeat pad kra pow, and chicken kung pao. Yes, we had a chicken lover in the group. The food wasn't eye opening or anything, but the flavor was decent. Sadly they didn't treat their meat so beef and chicken were both dry and undesirable. Rice was not free and we were charged $3 for it. Duck salad was actually the best one on the table. Overall experience was meh. Shrimp Pad Thai was average in taste, but literally we only found 2 pieces of shrimp in the entire dish. Angel Wings were interesting and I loved the crispy flavors and the accompanying sauce. I love their beef jerky. It is unlike any other beef jerky you can find at other Thai restaurants. At other restaurants, the beef jerky is just plain and salty, but here it has lots of flavors. I especially like the pieces with a little bit of fat. Nice burst of flavor and it tastes so good with their sticky rice and sauce. I usually order to go. The lady who usually helps me is super nice! Parking: very limited and tight parking spaces. A nightmare for me because I don't like small spaces since I am admittedly bad at parking in tight spaces. What a great little mom and pop shop. There is a tiny lot with limited parking that is shared with a few other businesses. Inside is a bit outdated and most people order as take out but we decided to eat in. We got the beef pad see ew, chicken pineapple coconut curry, and papaya salad. My favorite was the pad see ew. The noodles were so flavorful and well cooked. My bf actually wanted to order a second plate! The papaya salad was ok... the dried shrimp was a bit too large and was difficult to chew. This is one of my dad's favorite restaurants in LA. This place has the best beef jerky in town. We literally have to get atleast two orders because it's just that good. The pad thai and pineapple fried rice are pretty good too. They're generous with their proportions. Parking can be difficult because it shares a tiny parking lot with other stores. Good thing is, this place delivers!! The staff always have a smile on their faces and are always so friendly. They have a few tables inside, so it can get packed during lunch. YELP 100 CHALLENGE 2017 - PART 3: 96/100 I know. It's hard to say the name without chuckling, so go ahead and let it all out. (I'll be honest: I couldn't help but smirk, at the least! It only goes to show how immature I am.) Moving on! It's a small restaurant, probably could seat about 40 at the most (if at that.) My friend who recommended to have lunch here suggested to sit at the regular tables (vs the booths.) From his experience, those booths tend to sink which means the tables end up being uncomfortably too high (or the seats becoming uncomfortably too low) to enjoy a meal. My friend frequents this place, so he let us do all the ordering. The menu is pretty extensive, so it took a minute for a run-through. We started off with the shrimp tempura. It was more breaded shrimp (there really was nothing tempura about it.) The seasoning was good and the size of the shrimp was decent. The downside, other than it NOT being tempura at all, was that the breading was too thick and overcooked, therefore the bites were slightly tough. Overall, was okay. I never pass on angel wings whenever I see it at a Thai restaurant. Good crisp on the chicken and the stuffing was proportionate to the chicken meat. What makes this app, though, is the dip. It's like they created their own version of jardinière of a dip: the sauce was sweet, that aroma of the basil, the crunch of the peanuts and some other things I couldn't break down. I enjoyed that a quite nicely. We requested for the seafood soup mild, and that's exactly what we got. The broth was pleasant with the aroma of lemongrass emanating from its heat. They didn't skimp on the seafood either. There were plenty of pieces of fish, shrimp, calamari and mussels. We all gave thumbs up on this, a definite repeat on the next visit. The catfish with spicy curry sauce was a bit spicier than as requested at mild. The pieces of fish were sliced thin and small and the entire dish got too busy with its sidekicks. I had a small bite, but nothing more. The leftover went to my friend's cat. It wasn't horrible, but it definitely needs work. Ordered the beef panang curry, which, like the catfish, was also a bit of a downer. It was disappointing for a basic Thai dish. Although the sauce was great, the beef was REALLY tough. It took a bit of work to chew and break them down. Most of us kinda overlooked it after a few bites. I had no idea what morning glory is, but since it came with the option of adding crispy pork, it was a must-try. We were all pleasantly surprised with the outcome. The leaves were fresh sautéed in garlic and whatever else they used to yield that delicious sauce/broth. That plate got cleaned up rather quickly. This is a definite repeat! Large rice was perfect for a party of 4. The service was decent. Ditto the prices. A few spaces of parking are available but can get busy since they share the lot with a few other businesses. You could get lucky with street parking, too. Overall decent experience. 3.5 stars. read more
