The food was so good that we got take out dinner 3 nights in a row! We where staying at a hotel near by the restaurant while visiting Monterey Bay. Their Saiamese Fish Delight and Ginger dish with Chicken was so flavorful. Yummy! If you can take some level of spicy food, I recommend getting at least a 3 star or medium spicy so that the flavor of the spices really come through. The restaurant is beautifully decorated Thai style and has been there for nearly 40 years. Love the owner! He is super nice and friendly. We stayed in Monterey for a week and got to visit many restaurants and this was one of the best! Our server Douglas was really nice and knew the plates well. He helped me (as I am a novice thai foodie). Really cute restaurant, and the food was SO GOOD! Had the Shrimp Pad Thai, scrumptious and the Fried Rice with Chicken and Douglas made an in-between heat level of mild to medium, which was perfect!! Will definitely come back! Prices in Monterey have gone up quite a bit, but the food here was great and reasonable. Would give them a 10!! read more

We ordered the tum yum soup in the hot pot, the spicy duck (1/2 duck size) and some steamed white rice. We had a bad experience here both the food and customer service were bad. First we were brought the tum yum soup $14...it was cold. I asked the store owner if he could heat it up because it was cold. He gets upset and starts angrily telling me that, that's how it's supposed to be and that they don't use burners. So I put my finger in the bowl, and he's like ohhhhh ok I'll warm it up. A few minutes later he brings it back and it's still cold. He brings it a third time with the burner he had just said they don't do. The broth had an okay taste but there weren't enough mushrooms or other veggies; there were a few shrimp but they had a slight chlorine flavor to them. Secondly the duck $18. The presentation for the duck was nice but it certainly was not half a duck. I have ordered duck several times at different restaurants so I know what 1/2 duck looks like. This was more of 1/4 duck. At this point we were pretty hungry after only really having broth. So we were like fine let's just eat. It had this glaze on top a looked really good. Worst duck I've ever had. The meat was old and hard. Some parts looked like they were duck jerky. The rice was good. It smelled good and tasted good; we ate that with some of the tum yum broth. My boyfriend and I were very disappointed and still hungry we paid and left to go eat something else. We should have known better it was peak lunch time and there were only us and another table there. I am not surprised business was slow the food was just so bad. The food was really bad and flavorless. There was no taste in the food at all. I'm surprised how any food can be cooked this way. If I were to just boil carrots that still has some taste to it. The ambience is amazing, there was good music playing at the perfect volume to carry conversations or remain silent, the entire place is very clean and the server checked on us at the right intervals. I think it's reasonable for diners to have a signature dish to use as a point of comparison between restaurants. For Thai food, mine used to be Pad Thai until I realized that's super boring/white of me, and that a yardstick for quality should be something more effort-laden and unique. That is when I changed to Panaang and my world of Thai did open. On first approach, Siamese Bay looks a little kitschy, with an indoor pagoda and a large framed picture of the owners with Clint Eastwood. That made me feel better because boy, I sure know when I'm looking around, I crave Cleent's reputed expert opinion on Thai food. Of all the times I've been here, I've never once seen another staff member but for the sour looking and gruff waiter/server/host/manager, with a perpetual frown. That said, stay tuned for what's next. Of the starters I've tried here, the big stand out winners are the shrimp dumplings, like little bundles of shu mai joy, and the tom ka soup, served in the traditional hotpot. The shu mai were perfectly steamed, fresh, and delicate, and the soup was hearty, flavorful, and packed with chicken, mushrooms, and a generous seasoning of kaffir lime leaves which are my favorite. On the entrée list, he always gets the Pad Woon Sen, glass noodles with chicken and veggies with a generous hand of fresh and crisp green onions to add a crunch to the soft noodles. I have delighted through the special yellow curry with veggies, and the zingy pineapple curry, but what brings me back is their passionately spiced, and well simmered Panaang. I'm impressed with their confident use of heat and traditional spices such as lemongrass and bamboo, and yet are comfortable suggesting a pairing with a very American and local wine (information on every table). Parking is limited and parallel, for those parking while female, but do not let this obstacle dissuade you from trying this authentic gem. Also, bathrooms are SUPER tiny, and awkwardly situated, you'll have to take my word on this. Negative one star just for the cranky server/host/manager and his continual grimacing face, with the cramped bathrooms. Otherwise a solid four stars for dependably good, traditionally spiced, and quality Monterey Thai food. read more

The best fresh summer rolls I have ever had. I love their use of mint inside and the peanut sauce is so good too! I love the drunken noodles, formerly known as spicy basil noodles, but the last 2x I've ordered they are spicer than I remembered. So heed warning. Service: 5/5 even though we waited for several minutes to be greeted to and to be seated Place: 5/5 clean and tidy. Bathroom was small but kept clean. Food: 3/5. Portions are decent for the price. I also ordered the Thai Spring Rolls which were good but it was soft- although to be fair, I opened the container about 20 minutes after picking up my order. We have been going to this place at least since 1988. All Thai restaurants for us are compared to theirs. We love their panang, Mi Krob(only place we have found it). The food at Siamese Bay is literally the best Thai food in Monterey, if not the best in the entire Bay Area. The ingredients are always fresh and the curries are some of the best I've ever had. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes Thai food. The dishes are full of flavor and spices, and I've literally never ordered anything i didn't like. Any dish can be made vegetarian or vegan (e.g. selecting tofu or veggies as a meat or requesting no fish sauce in soups) and Sam, the owner, is always happy to accommodate his customers. Seriously, the food is delicious. My husband and I have been coming here for years. Sam is by far the most friendly and genuine business owner in town. He makes a point to learn about his customers and remembers the folks who return. He makes his customers feel important and cared for. This place has been here for 40 years for a reason!! My husband and I lived in Monterey for 2 years and ate here weekly. Dining in, or take out, whatever you prefer, you seriously can't go wrong. We now live 1.5 hours north of Monterey and specifically go out of our way to travel to town to eat at this restaurant. We recommend arriving between 7-7:30 as most of the crowd leaves by then and you generally have the whole restaurant to yourself (even on Friday and Saturday nights!).
