Sideboard may be my favorite neighborhood spot. The food is consistently tasty. The folks who work there are super nice and go above and beyond. And pre-covid, I loved perusing and occasionally buying the little trinkets they had. In terms of food, some of my favorite items are the tostadas salad with chicken (the tangy crumbled cheese on top brings everything together), the beet salad and the enchiladas. Oh, and their French fries (and dipping sauce) are *chef's kiss*. Honestly, the fries are the closest I've found to Blue Barn (in SF) fries. They also make a simple but surprisingly tasty grilled chicken for kids. Other pre-covid perks: This is such an amazing family spot. It's the kind of place where you don't need to worry if your kids are being a bit noisy. They also have a bin full of toys for kids to play with while you eat. I came here after seeing the burger pictures on Yelp that looked tasty. I went to order without looking at the menu and I asked the cashier to help me find the burger on the menu and he said "there's only one burger and it's the SB burger." He did not help me find it on the menu. I looked through the list of menu items and found two burgers, the SB burger and a veggie burger. I asked him to describe the burger so could decide if it was the kind of taste I liked for burgers. He said the SB stood for Sideboard which didn't help me decide the taste. He said it was the most popular item so I said I'd get one. He asked how well to cook the patty. I asked him what it was made of because depending on the quality of their meat I want to know whether I can trust them to do a patty not well done. He said hamburger meat which did not help me make my decision. I asked him what was the hamburger meat made of and he said cow. I had felt he was speaking in a condescending tone the whole conversation from the beginning, but I tried to ignore it. When he said hamburger meat is made of cow, I felt very insulted. I'm in my 30s and dressed well and speaking clear English. For him to assume I don't know hamburger meat is made of cow is very insulting. Still, I was patient and I explained that I want to know the contents of the patty: what parts of the cow are inside. He said it's a patty with a tone that suggested he thought I was wrong to ask him this question. Overall, I felt the cashier treated me like I was dumb and was rude and disrespectful. Great spot for brunch in downtown Lafayette! There are plenty of paid parking lots close by, so finding parking is a breeze. Parking has been free during covid the last few times I visited. Sideboard is a popular spot for weekend brunch, and there was a line about 8 people deep at 11 am on a Sunday. The line moves quickly though and the servers are attentive and helpful! The interior decor is homey and quaint, with a farmhouse aesthetic. I ordered an iced chai latte and the breakfast sandwich. The sandwich was okay. It was a pretty basic sandwich, nothing too special. The chai was great and had an excellent spiced flavor. Their drinks are huge! They serve hot beverages in big goblet-sized mugs. The biggest plus of Sideboard is their ample outdoor seating. They have a wide range of different sized tables spread out across two storefronts. I've been wanting to go to Sideboard for a while now.. so after a nice hike at Briones it felt like the right time to stop here for lunch! It was pretty packed in there on a Friday afternoon so finding a table was hard. I don't like how you have to pick your own table, especially when groups of two are able to steal tables for 4 people or more. I ordered the chicken pot pie off of the specials board. Since it was cold outside, a nice warm pot pie sounded so comforting. It wasn't a traditional pie with the dough fully encompassing the filling, but rather filling topped with a scone. Sound's good on paper... very disappointing when I got it. The savory scone was very thick and dry. While it has a decent flavor, it was cold and hard to eat. I couldn't cut it with my fork so I just ended up picking it up and eating it that way. The pot pie filling was chicken and spinach in a mushroom gravy. The filling had just one flavor to it so I got tired of it quick. I also wish there were more ingredients inside. Potatoes, carrots, peas.. something.. anything! It did come with a side of cranberry jam/relish, but it felt disconnected. What made the pot pie more disappointing was the price of it! Way too expensive for something so bland. I am sad to say that I don't think I will risk trying something new at Sideboard again. read more

She doubted me at first and didn't think 2 sunny side eggs on top of Mac n cheese would be good but come on, throw some perfectly crisp bacon on top and you have what's pretty close to perfection. Sweet local restaurant feel. However, the food was average at best. And the "bar/cart" area where you grab your glasses, water and silverware leave me weary. My husband ordered the stake sandwich, he says "it was average, dry and chewy". I got the fried chicken sandwich and it was stringy, dry and the slaw had a weird flavor I couldn't quite put my finger on. We got the Mac and cheese for my 3 and 4 year old and good thing we only ordered 1 serving! It looked like it had been sitting for at least half the day and they just threw some cheese back on top and reheated it. I'm a Mac and cheese snob and tried it...soft noodles, bland and almost gross taste and super oily. I did not blame my kids for not wanting to eat it. We also ordered the Brussels sprouts- they were fine, the aioli was mostly mayonnaise. And the garlic fries were average. Overall, would not recommend and not worth the $69+ spent. Oh, and to add about the silverware, it's laying in a drawer for anyone and everyone to touch every single utensil and the drawer dividers the silverware is sitting in is very dirty looking. First time visiting this cute spot but was disappointed with the service when ordering coffee and food. The employee at the register did not care that it was my first time and when asked if I can order for dine in she almost seemed disappointed as if her job was going to get harder or as if my presence was not welcomed. She had no customer service skills and so their young employees should be trained further. The young man helping the lady ahead of me also was greeted by the customer instead of the other way around. When asked if I would get my own creamer, the employee shook her head and gave me an annoyed look as if to hint "get on with it lady stop asking so many questions." Great brunch with barista coffee and freshly baked goods. We found this place after a Sunday morning run at Lafayette Reservoir. Every classic meal is prepared with a cool twist. Love this place for lunch and brunch, although super crowded on weekends. Also gets crowded after school when the kids get out. Service is fine, nothing to speak of but the staff is a bunch of young kids. The food is pretty good, we order eggs, sandwiches, salads and desserts. They have all sorts of pastries, including large slices of cake, muffins, brownies and breads. My husband is into their coffee drinks which are often really sweet. They bump really loud music which can be a pain if you're there trying to have a conversation with friends. You're allowed to bring dogs if you sit outside on their patio. There is also a green space across the parking lot you can sit with picnic blankets, but it's super hot and sunny and there is no shade. read more

When an employee came to clear the table she asked "How was everything?". Prompted by her question I decided to let her know I found egg shell in the meal. "Well we made food with real eggs here, most people don't" The lack of empathy and ownership in the response along with how we were treated the remainder of our stay there left a bad impression. So imagine how much my heart fluttered when I stepped into Sideboard and saw "Bucket o' Fried Chicken" on the center of their menu. $17 for half a bucket of fried chicken - uh yeah, let's do this! What did I get? $17 of pink. Salty pink. Chicken was pink and a smidgen bloody. Tried a second piece and had the same issue. Given the 15 min wait time that was disclosed, I'd expect it to be more thoroughly cooked...Batter had poor adhesion - it fell apart in small chunks. Salt seemed to be the only seasoning and it was overdone. Definitely disappointed considering some of the positive reviews that brought me here in the first place. Cost is usually an indication of quality and taste, but Sideboard failed to deliver here. 1 point for refreshing mint infused water - it was quite refreshing. 1 point for introducing me to Mike's Hot Honey - definitely going to buy some to keep around, it drastically improved the chicken. read more

First sip was tasty. Downhill after that. After that, it was an expensive glass of water. Took home a piece of coffee cake that was small and different. Not what was expected. Fun place for many of the local mom's and young adults to hang and families to picnic. Folks in in town love this place for atmosphere and food, I get it. Next to the plaza, food and beer, etc. I won't come here in my own due to this being third time with okay food. Only came with friend who like the pork quesadilla which looks like a hot mess. Hubby and I met up with here with 3 friends. Had just an OK experience, not great so we will probably not be back since it's more of a trek for us. The server cleaned the table with a wet towel as the previous diners had left it messy, but the server never came back to wipe the table dry. After 10 minutes of waiting for her to come back, I went ahead and dried it myself with a paper towel. I couldn't put anything on the table as it was wet. Hubby was not very happy. Hubby and I are on a low carb diet so we ordered the Bacon and Cheese Scramble. It was one of the two dishes that's low carb in their menu. We also ordered a side of bacon to share. I tried to order avocado to go with my scramble but I was told by the cashier that avocados are "out of season" for them. The scramble was good. Definitely filling. Our friends had scones, potatoes, bacon, Breakfast Mac and Cheese and beignets. My friend didn't care for the potatoes, and my other friend loved the beignets. The tables inside quickly filled up after 10:30 am on a Sunday. It was super windy that day so the tables outside were not ideal. I'm sure it'll be nice to eat outside when it's warm and not windy out. They have lots of pastries if you're craving something carby. Coffee is quite good black. Burger is excellent every time. Fries or salad on the side is always great. Steak sandwich, chicken sandwich, veggie sandwich are all good options. Excellent caesar salad. Everything they bake is delicious too. Nice options on dips for fries the best are spicy ketchup and pesto aioli. The only things that suck are the weird occasional additions to the menu. The Cubano is awful and they used to try to do a soft shell crab sandwich that was terrible. If you stick to the basics you'll get a really great meal here every time, but they always have a few things that shouldn't be on the menu read more

I've been a fan of Sideboard as a company since the Danville Hotel days. Now that the Lafayette location is open, I can say with confidence that with all other things being equal, I prefer this store to the renovated Danville store. The food is a major draw. Sideboard prides itself on using high quality ingredients, and it's something I think is reflected in both the taste of the food and the prices. Breakfast is great - I love ordering the Veggie Scramble with extra bacon on the side - but I find myself wandering in to Sideboard after 11 AM most days, which leaves only the lunch/dinner menu available (we want breakfast all day!). For dinner, you can't go wrong ordering any of the salads; my favorites include the Thai Chicken Salad and the Pink and Golden Beets Salad, but the warm Sauteed Peasant Salad is very comforting and filling in the brisk autumn and winter months. Those who aren't gluten free will also enjoy the Bucket of Fried Chicken, which is only available at this location (obviously, this is a recommendation from my husband, who is a bit of a fried chicken connoisseur and definitely not gluten free). Oh, and the French Fries are a must! Try them with both the Spicy Calaca Ketchup and Creamy Herb dips. Of course, no visit to Sideboard would be complete without a treat from the pastry case. There are always a few gluten free goodies, including muffins and scones, freshly baked every day. My favorite mid-afternoon treat involves the Carrot Cake (daunting but worth it) and a cafe au lait with almond milk. Delicious! The things that set the Lafayette location apart come down to the location and the service. While both restaurants offer great patio seating, complete with blankets and outdoor heaters, Lafayette has less crowds and a lovely view of the park across the street. I've been told you can pre-arrange a picnic basket, which is something I can't wait to try when the weather warms up! The vibe at Lafayette is definitely more relaxed than its Danville counterpart, and part of that stems from the easygoing and personable staff here. I've experienced nothing but friendly service that's truly concerned with serving the best food possible, and that care goes a long way. I'll be returning again and again to this location. I like the food here and the general atmosphere - its cozy and within walking distance of the nail salon I go to with my BFF when I am in town. The patio is great to sit at and people watch. They have interesting (and pricey) salads and some bakery options that are really good. You need to double check the ingredients sometimes because things that aren't listed show up - like pomegranate seeds in the Sautéed Peasant Salad. The last time I was there I ordered the Chai Tea and wasn't overly impressed. Only in Lafayette can you get away with charging over six dollars for lukewarm slightly under-spiced tea. But to their credit they remade it to actually taste like chai and I appreciated that. :) read more
