Sideboard is a one-of-a-kind (technically, two-of-a-kind as there is another location in Danville) cafe with a delightful variety of baked goods, salads, sandwiches, sides, and drinks in a casual, homey setting. Over many years of patronage, I've never tried anything that I didn't like. My favorites are the fried brussels sprouts, BLAT (seasonal), fried chicken, and mac & cheese. During winter months, their hot chocolate is a must! I love to meet up with friends here and linger for a while on their patio or the adjacent park where they offer picnic service. There's indoor seating too for days when the weather is less than ideal. The prices are on the higher side, but the portions are generous. I only wish they had some smaller portion options for the budget-conscious. Overall, I always have a great experience and find the customer service to be kind and welcoming. Originally I gave this place 4 stars in my other review but yesterday for their brunch I came back and it is completely worth 5 stars! The quality is great and I'm even more surprised that their prices aren't higher. I had the French toast and the bread was extremely thick and filling. Followed it with the bacon scramble that for being so little ingredients had great flavor. Ordered a side of toast and it was so great & yes they bring out soft butter so makes life so much easier! Went there at 4:30 yesterday. Really not as good as any other time we've been there. Ordered the corn pudding (delicious) which is under $10 by itself and I think $18 with salad. The salad was bagged lettuce with half a cherry tomato with no dressing. It came out a full 15 minutes before anything else so I was done eating before bf's salad came out. Drink came even later. First time visiting for breakfast and the place is very warm, welcoming and super adorable with its shabby-chic vibe. Place is set up for self service: order at the counter, take a 'table sign and food delivered to your table. Utensils, condiments, napkins and water are at the 2 sideboards at each side of the restaurant. When you get to the counter, oodles of pastries in the display case: scones, housemade English muffins, cinnamon buns, chocolate cake....and yes, you end up getting one...two...or three items to go while you dine for breakfast! *** 3 - 3.5 stars for breakfast *** = POACHED EGG on ACME LEVAIN BREAD - just that, simple and straightforward, but not toasted as noted = BACON (side) - 3 thick strips - nice crisp = CRISPY POTATOES (2/5) - I love a potato and expecting lightly crispy, with a creamy interior..these were like a hard shells and dry with no ketchup available. Heard a lot about this place and its modern American cuisine. The fried brussel sprouts were really good. Hard to mess these up though. They were crunchy and crispy. We also got the meatloaf sandwich which was just ok. It was a little thick and dense so it might have been better if it were a little lighter. The steak sandwich was ok but not tender enough. If you're going to put steak in a sandwich, you need to make sure you can bite through it without tearing out the whole piece or tearing the sandwich apart. The deconstructed pot pie was just ok as well. The flavor was really good and the pastry was cooked well. But there wasn't enough sauce for all that pastry. We dined here when it wasn't cold to sit outside. Love the location- they have quite a few things to keep kids busy in the small park in front of the restaurant. You line up, place order and get a token to sit outside/inside and wait for your food to arrive. Service was prompt and we all loved our food. I have been here several times over the last two years, usually after I take a hike with Lafayette Reservoir. However, today I was simply craving their food so we drove all the way from the Oakland hills after a hike. I had the Veggie Scramble with wild mushrooms and baby arugula. It was delicious and the arugula was very fresh. Also, they have handmade ketchup which is worth taking home. My friend had the Eggs Benedict, Sideboard allows you a one egg option for a reduced price, which is appreciated deeply by the people who do not feel like eating too much. We cleared off our plates completely. Not a crumb left. Then we got a piece of carrot cake and more coffee. In case you haven't read yet, their lattes come in soup size bowls. There is ample outside seating and a lot of people are also chose to sit inside as well. We were there on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but the heat lamps and the blankets were really appreciate it because it was windy and a little cold. The service is friendly but you are expected to get your own silverware, condiments and water. There's ample public parking around this location. My only wish is that they would get touchless payment options. You can only pay here with cash or credit card. read more

I was expecting this place to be great based on most of the recent reviews. Unfortunately, the food wasn't great for the price. With The Hideout less than a mile away, I'd choose them for breakfast over Sideboard. Their quirky decor is unique, but I was surprised to find that it's a cafe that also serves a full menu. You don't receive service at your table, other than when someone brings out your food. You have to get your napkins, silverware, and room temperature water. I got the French toast and thought it was ok; I think it's a little pricey ($8.75) for 2 pieces with no sides. Would have loved if it had more bananas on top! Also got a mimosa, which was almost $10...yeesh. If I ever come back, I'll try their pastries or their lunch. The French toast didn't impress me at all. read more

The owner of this restaurant is amazing, warm, and cares tremendously about her customers even when her own employees didn't help us. Here's why: Crispy Potatoes (Garlic, Fresh Herbs) - Subbed out the cream for avocado. As delicious as these potatoes looked, I kid you not, these were by the far the worst potatoes I've ever had in my life. The description says crispy but these were not crispy by any mean. It was cutting my socket, my jaws were clenching like it was sugar cane, and there was absolutely zero flavor. I did not think messing up potatoes was possible. When I dropped it on my plate, it had the buoyancy of a stone. I brought them back inside because it was hurting my jaw, and the front counter said "Oh, we can remake that for you but the description says it's crispy." And I was like "No, this is nothing even close to crispy." The owner sees us, and asks what's wrong and I explained. Without any hesitation, she takes it back and apologizes profusely, and thanks me for my feedback. When they brought it out the second time, it's just slightly better but I feel bad for bothering. Avocado Toast (Lime, Salt, Arugula, Baby Tomatoes) - It would've been good but the bottom of the toast was charred black. My friend could not bite through the bread. When the owner brought back out my remade dish, she saw the Avocado Toast and said "I'm taking that back for you. This is completely unacceptable." We really appreciate the attentiveness of the staff, and really disappointed because we heard so many great things about this place and no one else around us had this issue at all. Came here on a Wednesday morning and it was quite busy. Lots of seating indoor and outdoor and they even have picnic baskets and blankets you can borrow to lay out in the grass right across the restaurant and enjoy your food there. You order first and then you get a number and seat yourself. Their lattes were delicious and they serve it in a huge cup or should i say bowl, lol. The food here is always delicious. Most of the drinks are tasty. Service is " your on your own" kinda deal. The staff just bring out your drink and meal. You have to get your utensils, water, napkins, and plates. Seating is 1st come 1st serve. It can get ridiculously loud inside. I recommend sitting outside. Great place if you have kids. If free people had a cafe... Literally the cutest spot. I'd do lunch or date night here honestly. Type of place you could study/ work at for hours but also have a glass of wine. They have live music on Wednesday at 7. I got the Mac n cheese which was so good and my friend got the peanut wings, which she loved. I went to order without looking at the menu and I asked the cashier to help me find the burger on the menu and he said "there's only one burger and it's the SB burger." He did not help me find it on the menu. I looked through the list of menu items and found two burgers, the SB burger and a veggie burger. I asked him to describe the burger so could decide if it was the kind of taste I liked for burgers. He said the SB stood for Sideboard which didn't help me decide the taste. He said it was the most popular item so I said I'd get one. He asked how well to cook the patty. I asked him what it was made of because depending on the quality of their meat I want to know whether I can trust them to do a patty not well done. He said hamburger meat which did not help me make my decision. I asked him what was the hamburger meat made of and he said cow. I had felt he was speaking in a condescending tone the whole conversation from the beginning, but I tried to ignore it. When he said hamburger meat is made of cow, I felt very insulted. I'm in my 30s and dressed well and speaking clear English. For him to assume I don't know hamburger meat is made of cow is very insulting. Still, I was patient and I explained that I want to know the contents of the patty: what parts of the cow are inside. He said it's a patty with a tone that suggested he thought I was wrong to ask him this question. Overall, I felt the cashier treated me like I was dumb and was rude and disrespectful. I'm not a huge fan of the seating. The benches aren't very comfortable and it can be pretty loud. Stumbled upon this place while we were in Lafayette for brunch on Saturday. When we arrived, there weren't that many people, which was good for us since we didn't have time to wait. It was very nice and cozy inside. Basically, you order at the cash register and then find a table. The servers will bring the food to your table. I decided to get an iced vanilla latte (w/ oat milk) and the ceviche salad. The salad was delicious! I highly recommend. It's very fresh and citrusy. The latte was good too - they have paper straws. The Fiesta Bowl is amazing and surprising. It's the best salad I've ever had in my life. It's not under salads. It's under plant based I just think everyone in the world should try it and they will be amazed at how kale can taste so good with that good dressing and there are all these little delightful poppings going on from pomegranate seeds and quinoa, and it has texture from beans. The iced coffee was delicious- the mixture of simple syrup, milk, and chicory had an aftertaste that was sweet and subtle like honey. My favorite item was the meatball sandwich, which had a huge chunk of meatloaf that was sandwiched between two soft and fluffy slices of bread. The beignets were also super light and buttery! I got a brownie and maple scone to go- the maple scone was amazing! I could eat it every day with my morning coffee. Sideboard may be my favorite neighborhood spot. The food is consistently tasty. The folks who work there are super nice and go above and beyond. And pre-covid, I loved perusing and occasionally buying the little trinkets they had. In terms of food, some of my favorite items are the tostadas salad with chicken (the tangy crumbled cheese on top brings everything together), the beet salad and the enchiladas. Oh, and their French fries (and dipping sauce) are *chef's kiss*. Honestly, the fries are the closest I've found to Blue Barn (in SF) fries. They also make a simple but surprisingly tasty grilled chicken for kids. Other pre-covid perks: This is such an amazing family spot. It's the kind of place where you don't need to worry if your kids are being a bit noisy. They also have a bin full of toys for kids to play with while you eat.
