Such a cute coffee spot! Each time I've visited, I truly enjoyed the experience. The workers are always kind, and they even offer free stickers! It's the little things that make customers smile! The outdoor patio is beautiful and dog friendly. So far, I have tried their iced mochas and vietnamese iced coffee. Both were very good! There was one visit when their espresso machine was not working, and they offered to subsitute cold brew for the viet iced coffee - it's delicious either way. I have already recommended this cafe to many friends in the area and everyone that took me up on this recommendation has always had pleasant experiences. read more

It's 2:30 in the afternoon and they close at 4:00, and they say they won't brew any more drip coffee... They say they generally dont brew after 12 noon. They said oh you could have an Americana. What kind of real coffee shop, won't brew hot coffee after 12 noon? So no coffee for me. It's too bad because they're my neighborhood, coffee shop. Came in with passing and I believe I ran into the owner. Very nice man. I like their seasonal drinks and selection of drinks as well. Cute. You'll hear that a lot in the reviews...for good reason. It is indeed cute. Staff is service oriented and tries. Great back patio, great space in general, unique offerings for drinks and even some food. That being said...as a roaster, it's kind of disappointing they don't have pour over or any other offering highlighting their beans or roasts, not even a light roast. Maybe they don't have a market for the purist coffee demographic? Definitely not a spot for purists or coffee nerds, great for a date or to study or catch up with a friend. read more

Person working the front when i went was nice enough to let me taste the coffee I was looking to bring home before purchasing while there though I tried the vietnamese coffee and an onion cheese empanada, which both were very good. Get the dulce de latte. Not iced like I did. Amateur move. The dulce de leche can't mix in an iced drink. But it did mix a lil bit after 2 hours of walking and my drink got to become room temp. Yay! Boichick bagels in Alameda! I'm sitting at Signal as I type. I'm having the Mexican Mocha and a bagel and they are both very tasty. The sleek atmosphere would be at home in the lobby of any downtown SF tech giant (including the techno rap playing at 8:30am). Three stars because they still have A LOT to learn in customer service, communication, music volume, and their line management in painful. Chat away with your new customers, yes, but please refrain from having long conversations when you have a line out the door. They also need to learn to consistently make their drinks the same way each time. For friendly, efficient service, and/or a relaxed place to work, I suggest going to WesCafe down the street. For Boichick and great coffee when you have the patience to wait in line this place rocks (quite literally). I like having multiple coffeehouses to choose from on the west end. read more

Delicious coffee, Boichik bagels (our favorite!), super yummy empanadas, incredibly kind and attentive staff, and fantastic ambience. We came here in the first week of its opening, so they're still nailing down some of the mechanics (it's not easy opening a restaurant!), but overall we just had such a lovely experience/morning. We ate some scrumptious treats, and sipped our wonderful beverages as we chatted on the back patio. Apart from everything being thoroughly tasty, and the service being so warm, the back patio is foliage covered with tons of happy potted plants, trees, a fountain, and plenty of space for sitting and enjoying yourself. 5/5 - can't wait to come back here. read more

This place is cute if you are in need of a charming space to take a date or hold a brief meeting. The design of the shop, its location and ambiance is fantastic. If, however, you are seeking a satisfying, beautiful and well-made espresso drink - look elsewhere (like Highwire or Coffee Cultures, in Alameda, or the Crown in Oakland). Signal wants Blue Bottle prices for poor taste and shoddy execution. I've visited their Wester Street shop several times because it is close to where I live. I want to like this place (that patio!). I want to support it and say good things about it, but I have grown frustrated giving it chances and being disappointed. Hence, this review. Signal is mediocre at best. When I visit Signal I either order an espresso, cappuccino, or a latte. Espresso drinks I have been served have had a wild range of temperatures and often large bubbles in foam consistency for lattes and cappuccinos - yikes. I used to work as a barista, this is basic stuff to screw up. There is no attempt at latte art (they put a lid on all their drinks on purpose to literally cover this up). Using a lid on every drink is wasteful, as I often don't want the lid. So i turn around and recycle it right away. Ditto the paper cup (wasteful) because I usually stay to drink in that amazing garden. Why bother asking your customers if they are "here?" or "to go?" if you're not going to listen and instead put the coffee in paper every time? This is a great opportunity to reduce waste, save money, and please your customers. When I stop by Signal it seems like I am being helped by a different barista every time which suggests, as a business, they are struggling with pretty high turnover. So if I had to guess why it appears like the people at Signal don't quite know what they are doing behind that gorgeous espresso machine, I'd say staffing issues, poor training, bad management? All three? A combination? It's a shame because on the surface it looks like they've got it together. But their product suggests something else. I've noticed the bulk of positive reviews come from customers who have ordered sugary latte products where the taste of coffee is indiscernible and it takes little to no technique to produce. Which probably accounts for why Signal's overall score on Yelp is positive. At any rate, fellow coffee lovers, be forewarned. If you don't mind consuming meh... coffee in a lovely environment then support this place. Two stars for the coffee. But five for the patio! Seriously, nice work there. read more
