Drip coffee: 4 Service: 5 Ambiance: 5 Passion Fruit Donut We were in town for a soccer match and I needed to grab an early morning coffee while the team was doing their warm-ups. I checked out for a good look of coffee shop and it steered me in this direction. I was there about 8:30 AM on a Saturday morning. There was a decent crowd inside and a small street market at the end of the block. There are a couple tables inside, a few more out front, and a lovely garden sitting area in the back. I was promptly greeted by Steve, or was it Jim? He was wearing a Howler tee. We had some quick banter about the pastries, his tee and my hat. He was friendly, expedient, and professional... Definitely the kind of service that helps create a customer base of regulars. I had come in about 15 minutes earlier to get the drip coffee and someone else helped me out. While they were efficient, they weren't very friendly or engaging. Unfortunately that's what qualifies I was regular service these days. They drip coffee was a medium roast. It was a perfect time and had a nice balance of flavor and acidity. After checking out the offerings at the market I decided to return to the coffee shop to get myself a breakfast treat, having mistaken a passion fruit donut for what I thought was a coffee donut. I had not had a passionfruit donut before, but I decided to give it a shot. Oh my gods. This thing was insanely delicious. At the first bite the filling erupted, offering the sweet flavors of a passion fruit in a crème form. I will aim to keep this review PG, but suffice it to say if a donut could be erotic this was it. If you ever need a donut for a date, THIS is the one.

I don't understand why a small coffee is $4.50. I brought my own refillable mug which she so kindly filled and was gonna charge me $5.50 but I told her just give me less and I'll do $4.50. The coffee isn't organic. There's nothing significantly different about it. But I was there so I purchased the coffee. They have this cashless system. I'm wondering if that's why their products are so much more than other coffee shops. So when I'm paying $4.50 for a regular small coffee I expect all the amenities: turbinado, sugar, or raw sugar, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. But they just had the regular plain sugar out which I don't like it all. It actually causes me to have a reaction cause it's so depleted. I saw no honey in sight. So I asked and luckily, she gave me some honey that they had behind the counter. I felt bad because it was almost empty, but I got what I needed for my coffee. She said she gave me a little bit extra coffee since I'm using a refillable mug, which was nice. That's the two stars. I will not come here again. I have been wanting to try it out because this shop has been here a few years and it was close to my work today. But $4.50 for a coffee when I can get better quality organic coffees for on average three dollars and at one of my favorite spots in Oakland for $1.50! Maybe this cashless thing is making things more expensive. With this economy especially, I think it'd be better to go back to cash and pay lower prices. Some pluses, nice seating area outside in back and in front, compostable utensils and packaging, good looking pastries ... though I didn't dare ask the cost of those.

I really like the people that work at the signal coffee. I stopped in when I was at the farmers market because I really wanted to paste drink coffee sadly they didn't have many pastries left just a jalapeño scone, which sounded terrible to me even though it looked very good and one other thing the ambience was cool and I love that they had a clean bathroom and a really nice backyard oasis to enjoy your coffee in. Parking is a little bit tricky on Webster Street, but you can find it on the side streets.

Stopped in for a Mexican Mocha while in the neighborhood. It was delicious! The space was quaint and full. I liked the coffee theme wallpaper that's on the wall! I will return again, likely for another Mexican mocha soon.

The coffee had really great flavor, but we were a bit disappointed that it wasn't served as hot as we requested. We came in closer to closing time, so we understand the team was getting ready to wrap up, but the customer service felt a little rushed. Since we were still paying customers, we expected a bit more politeness and attention. Overall, the coffee itself was decent, but the experience could have been warmer -- both in temperature and in service. Have a really cute outdoor space to work throughout the day . I wish they would expand their hours.

Cute local coffee shop. There are seatings inside and they provide wifi so it seems like a great place to get work done. They also have a outdoor patio area in the back, which looks like a nice, relaxing hangout spot. I got a black sesame latte, which is their signal espresso with choice of milk and their housemade black sesame syrup. I thought the black sesame flavor was not enough and the coffee flavor wasn't strong either. I would come back to give other drinks a try and to chill in the outdoor patio area.

First time trying SIGNAL Coffee Roasters! I went on a Saturday afternoon. There was a small wait. I ordered an iced mocha and I enjoyed it. There is an outdoor seating area which isn't made apparent at first glance. I think it makes this place a hidden gem. The staff were nice and quick to make my drink. Nice interior and garden. I'll be back!

Was walking to the food place my friend and I decided to get lunch at when we walked past this coffee shop. After eating lunch, we went back to this and tried their Ube Latte. I've been in search of a good Ube Latte but sadly this didn't meet the taste that I'm looking for an Ube Latte. I like the patio at the back. It' was quiet when we came and it's also has a cozy vibe.

Came by around 2pm on a Sunday and the place was pretty empty. Ordered a black sesame latte half sweet, but it didn't have any sesame flavor--or coffee flavor either. Mostly just tasted like milk. That said, the outdoor patio is really nice--shaded by trees, hanging lights, and a small fountain. Super peaceful and relaxing. A few tables inside as well. Staff was friendly and drinks came out in a reasonable time. I'd come back to do some work or chill outside, but probably wouldn't order any lattes.

Their bag of beans has ruined other coffee for me. We got the Guatemala honey ~35$ for a 12 oz bag but it's sooooo good. Even brewing our prior favs back to back with this one makes it a standout. I don't know why this place isn't more popular but don't buy up all my beans please lol It's a small store front with paid street parking which isn't the easiest on weekends but worth it to grab a bag. Such a cute and homey feeling coffee shop. The BEC English muffin was delicious! One of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had in this area. Love the little patio out back. The baristas were very nice. I will say the price for the size of the coffees is a little on the higher end but I've noticed that's normal with small cafes in the Bay Area. read more

Super cute ambiance, especially the outdoor patio in the back. I would definitely come back to this cafe to work or just to relax and read a book! I had the empanada (corn and chili), but I wish I would have also gotten the ube latte because it looks like that's their specialty. The empanada was good, wasn't mind blowing though. read more

I decided to give this little coffee shop a try based on a rec from a friend. Parking was pretty easy but you do have to feed the meter. Staff were super friendly and inviting. I got an oat milk latte and bagel with green chili cream cheese. The latte was really good -- very smooth and delicious. The bagel didn't quite work. I loved the idea of green chili cream cheese (w/ chilli's from New Mexico) but the bagel was very chewy and difficult to eat. Loved the cream cheese though! The outdoor courtyard was cute and had a relaxing vibe. Indoor seating looked cozy. Overall I really liked this spot. I want to try the breakfast sandwich next time! read more

Great cozy and casual place. Love their ube latte and their "substitute" for dulce de leche latte. When I got here they did not have the DDL latte so they made me a coffee with condensed milk and cinnamon which tasted amazing. read more

I was in Alameda for work and decided to stop by during my break. I loved the inside, especially the display on the left of the register that featured Signal merch and Mother's Day items. I appreciated the simple, easy-to-read menu. I decided on a matcha latte and a breakfast sandwich. The matcha latte was good (the smiley face latte art made it even better), but the breakfast sandwich was only ok-- it was kinda sad and dry. I would come back here if i'm in the area again. I'd love to try their other drinks (I'm looking at you, ube latte and dulce de leche latte) and their pastries. I'd also love to check out their outside seating area. I'm sure it would be lovely to sit and sip as the weather warms up! read more

Came here since I was craving specialty coffee and was pleasantly surprised with their flavors. I've had An ube latte before and typically they are always good. I ordered the ube latte and was great but my boyfriends order was alright. I believe he got some orange blossom latte. The flavored syrup tasted so odd to me in the coffee and wasn't sweetened. We didn't get to try the pastries but will make it a point the next time around forsure! read more

Not a bad coffee spot. But seems the flow through of orders etc is a bit disorganized. And lacking efficiency. Saw several customers had to go up and ask for their orders and saw the barista/servers rushing to get their orders out. read more

Really loved this place, the lay out inside, the concept of selling (and naming) local pastry/ food makers. Thank he court yard with the fountain at the back is so peaceful. I was delighted to hear that they are soon to open a second one just a across from the Alameda movie theater on Central. How exciting. read more

Placed 2 orders through Doordash, and both orders were missing items. For the first order, Signal forgot to pack a bag of beans. For the second order, Signal forgot to pack 4 iced latte cans. Signal Coffee Roasters appears to be operating at a very low SNR. Update: I placed another order through Doordash today, and this time, they forgot to give me 2 of the pourover pods I ordered. It seems that this place, despite its name, is operating with no signal at all, just noise. read more

Absolutely loved this place! Found this location on a whim with my best friend when we wanted to find a new coffee shop to try! The outside of the storefront is lowkey and slightly unassuming until you're greeted by lots of natural light reflecting off of the minimal and natural interior design. The coffee is fantastic; we ordered an iced ube latte and Vietnamese Iced Coffee to start. I also grabbed an iced mocha to-go. Would definitely come back again! read more

I usually like to try new small businesses during my weekends off. Called in for takeout order on 4/2/2022. 2 ube lattes, 2 toasties, and 2 empanadas with sales tax ..land it came out to a $50. Bit into my toasty and didnt realize it was burnt until I flipped it over to see the one side burnt. Pretty disappointed. With the cost of that toasty, I had to finish it. This is such a beautiful space, I love sitting in the back patio. It's a great little oasis from noisy Webster st. They have fantastic coffee and delicious treats (including boichik bagels!). On the weekends they feature items from other local small businesses, too. A fantastic addition to the west end. read more

I love the patio in the back - it's a gem of a garden and a perfect place to catch up with friends or just relax alone with a delicious coffee. Super cute coffee shop that has recently graced the West End. I came by to pick up some beans as a gift and the staff helping me was very friendly and helpful! Better yet, you actually get a free cup of coffee or $3.50 off your drink for purchasing a bag. Signal Coffee Roasters is definitely on the list of places that I'll be rotating through for my weekend coffee! I stopped by on a Saturday morning. Signal Coffee has some seating indoor and a very welcoming outdoor seating in the back. It seems like a very peaceful place to have your coffee and do some work in the mornings! I ordered a latte and a ham and cheese croissant. The ham and cheese croissant is from Crispian Bakery. When it's warmed, it was an absolute delight - crispy and flaky pastry with nicely cooked ham and melted cheese in the middle. It's the perfect savory breakfast! As for my latte, it was a solid. I enjoyed the coffee flavor. It was the perfect strength for me - not too dark or too light. Perfect combination with my morning pastry! I definitely enjoyed the morning coffee/breakfast at Signal Coffee! It didn't disappoint on my visit! read more

I ordered the Ube latte and I felt like it was lacking in flavor and I couldn't taste the Ube syrup or espresso at all. Their patio is aesthetic and great for studying or hanging out with a friend, but I felt pretty disappointed with my drink read more

My husband gets his hair cut at the barbershop down the street so I wandered in here as I was walking around. I ordered the chai and the autumn spice latte. I got both iced. Both were SO good! I will definitely be coming back at his next hair cut. The service was great, they were quick and kind, the drinks were great and it was such a cute/clean shop. Can't wait to come back and try more drinks!! read more

Super cute space! After a 5 miles walk, this was a treat! The ube latte was delicious and so was the triple chocolate concha! I appreciate that they bring in unique stuff from small bakers and bakeries. The empanada was also very good. Owner Brendan was very pleasant and seems to love what he do, and that really shows in his place and products. read more

Owners Brenden and his significant other are a delight, and the employees are nice and welcoming. But need to have someone on the register who knows what they are doing. First we call to get 2 bagels to go, the employee says okay it will be ready in 5-7 mins. We show up 10 mins later, lady says oh sorry we are backed up. Can you wait so we can start your order? Really we called. A person then asked the cashier to open a bottle for her with the bottle opener. It looked like it flustered her so much that she slowed down her productivity dramatically. So we leave and cancel our order cause we had no time to wait longer. Why do we get a call an hour later saying your bagel is ready, of course now we don't want our items anymore. Things seem to fall apart when Brenden isn't there at the cashier. Great place, questionable employees. read more

We LOVE this little coffee shop and were SO THRILLED when they opened. I have a soft spot for the ube latte on ice, but all of their coffees and teas are wonderful. Brendan is a gem, the service is always wonderful. They have great outdoor and indoor seating, their courtyard is especially lovely. read more

Absolutely recommend this place! Have been a bunch of times and each time the coffee, pastries, bagels were great! The customer service is amazing - helpful and informative. Highly recommend the Ube latte, their bagels with chili cream cheese, and any baked goods from the many guests they invite like Bake Sum Pastries. read more

Delicious! Had the breakfast sandwich with bacon on some kind of high end English muffin and eating it was a meditative experience. Then I got the banana bread and holy guacamole that was amazing too. Both the drip coffee and the Vietnamese iced coffee are really good as well, highly recommend! Emma enjoyed it too! read more

Just grabbed a coffee and some pastries from here! Super cute, the staff is nice too. Huge plus is that all of the pastries seem to be locally sourced, so you don't have to go to the other side of island for your Crispian Bakery fix anymore! One thing that stood out : One individual (I'm assuming manager or an owner?) was initially sitting at a table/talking with a friend, but as soon as a queue formed he went behind the counter without hesitation and started working the register so that the rest of the team could focus on fulfilling orders. It's a small thing, but as someone who has worked in service, this speaks volumes about workplace culture and ownership. Overall it seems like the owners have a clear vision for this place and the team is doing a good job making it a reality. If you're on the West End, definitely consider a visit! read more

Love the ambience, the outdoor seating is important to me, since I'm COVID cautious, I prioritize businesses with outdoor spaces and capacities. Love their options in the fridge too! I've been coming here for awhile, ever since one fine afternoon I was in town on business and was feeling a need for craft beer. I was once the world's predominant authority on craft beer in my own mind, but years of chugging ales have decimated my tolerance for it. Anywho, the first thing you'll notice about this spot is it's out there, pretty far off from downtown Alameda tucked away in an old military pier alongside some other more enterprising establishments. Lots of parking so there's that. Inside, they are definitely doing that thang, massive brewery stacks dominate the background but the space is massive so it supports an almost endless amount of tables, benches, and spots to hide out. Arcade machines, outdoor activities (even a kids sandbox) really add the "Adventureland" elements that make it more than just a standard brew joint. If you've had their beer, it's definitely on the expensive side, but they keep a healthy variety that I would say is all reliably refined and delicious. Its no 2000 era Bells or modern day Founders, but I particularly like their love hazy and the Mexican style lagers. My friends who like sours say they are also quite good. Although this place is really not directly affiliated with the business it's definitely a reason I go so I can't leave it out -- they have food trucks outside that handle most of the food there and the one they have there always has one of the best burgers I've ever had in the bay, hands down. It's a blackened blueberry and blue cheese burger and even though I don't like blue cheese, this unholy alliance is faaaaaaan-friggin-tastic. Must try. Service is casual, they do flights which is a great way to try things. Not sure about any happy hours, would love to see them get a mug/growler thing going here for discounts, they might have something already I'm just not aware of but nothing is obvious when I've gone. It's a great spot to kick it with some friends on a nice day or late afternoon, having a few beers and relaxing. California doesn't really do the beer garden thing like we do in the Midwest, you'll find spots like this all over Michigan so it's nice to see something of the same type here finally. I believe dogs are allowed too ala Texas vibes, but not 100% on that so I'd check ahead of time. Personally, I cannot stand seeing dogs at restaurants and bars so even if they do allow it, those aren't your kids, can we start reporting places that allow dogs without signage? If I brought a raccoon in on a leash would you be fine with that? It's a sanitation issue. Anyways, I digress, if you like beer, you like fun, and you like damn fine burgers, this is the best spot on the other side of the pond. 'nuff said.

Perhaps I'm used to the underground mall in New York with all of their decadent pastries in the Chelsea marketplace in New York, but this particular spot in Alameda was supposed to be one of the best pastries here on this cute little island. Perhaps it's just a cute little island aesthetics, but the pastries seemed rather traditional. The Yuzu tart was tasty and had good flavor, it was also around 2 PM on a Sunday, so maybe all the good pastries were gone. Service was great and very helpful, and another large family came in to the pastry shop as we were leaving. Maybe I'll try it next time and see if they have different seasonal pastries.
