Sometimes I wish yelp had half stars I really do. Because this review should not be four stars it really should be 3.5. But I rounded up due to our very patient waitress who was very understanding of our large group. She ended up splitting up fourteen checks which is insane and I commend her on doing so. I wouldn't of. To the food; silver sake has a good amount of options besides sushi which is good for those who don't love sushi. I got a bento box with beer teriyaki and a California roll. Boyfriend got the same but with chicken teriyaki. We spilt a large beer (five dollars on Thursdays!) and the garlic roll. Our food came out fast, which was a plus since we were starving. Garlic roll was great and we loved the sauce but on the small side for a high price (12 dollars). The bento boxes were not bad but pathetic on size portions. Especially the meat, there was barely any. After sharing half a roll I assumed I would barely touch my bento box but I ate literally everything on it. I was completely done with my food before other people in our group were served. The birthday boy even had this order forgotten about! I saw an add in the SNR or the ticket or something like that. I thought I would try a new place. I was heading out to that area anyway. The sign says Light and healthy sushi. That sounds like it would be good quality fish with little adornment. That's what I was hoping for. I was disappointed. So I walk in and this place is small. A little sushi bar and some tables. I always start off with some Tako sashimi when I go to a new place. I feel I can judge the quality by ordering this one thing. The octopus is cooked, but should be left pretty rare in the center. I find the best sushi bars take the care to cook the tako this way. The bad places have it cooked all the way through and it is chewy and rubbery. So I sit down at the bar and order this. The chef tells me they don't serve it. What???!!! no Tako!! Maybe some Aji, no dice. He says the only sashimi they have is Tuna, Yellow tail or salmon. I look at the menu to see if there is anything else I might like. Every roll has tempura shrimp in it. I settle on a small roll. It has the fried shrimp in the middle and is covered in 3 different sauces. That is not what I call "light and healthy sushi" I ate half the roll and asked for my bill. It wasn't good at all. I walked into this place really excited about trying a new place, but left really disappointed. Maybe I built it up to be something it wasn't. The menu didn't get me excited. The owners though are worth the visit--yelling, shouting, and berating each other like some Hong Kong tinged Laurel and Hardy routine. I am a huge sushi fan as a matter of fact I just had sushi for lunch yesterday! So today when I came to Silver Sake I was excited for lunch! The place was completely dead when we got there and the food had no flavor. My lunch ended up costing $65 for 2 rolls and three hand rolls, and mixed tempura, rather pricey. The tempura was some of the worst I have ever had, there was hardly any batter at all so it was like fried vegetables, yuck. I'm not really sure how everything had no flavor at all but they managed. Silver Sake is a favorite spot of my friends who have gushed and raved about for a long time. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and give it a fair chance and objective review. I took their recommendations into consideration but I didn't have any expectations or knowledge of Silver Sake except for their website and Yelp reviews. This review is based upon two visits. There are a few standard menu items or dishes on which all Japanese and sushi restaurants can be critiqued. The ability of a Japanese restaurant to execute and present these standard dishes are a good barometer of its authenticity, character and quality. Silver Sake's cookie cutter assortment of rolls was unimaginative, unimpressive and typical of what people think is sushi so I selected their Chicken Yakitori and Beef Kushi (skewers), spider roll and Chirashi Don. These are some of the standards. The chicken and beef skewers had no flavor, no seasoning, no char, no hints of smoked charcoal and the beef had the texture of shoe leather. These skewers bore no resemblance to the yakitori, kushiyaki or kushiage that you would find in an authentic izakaya where you would experience flavor explosions. The soft shell crab in the spider roll was decent but not the best I've had. Chirashi means "scattered" in Japanese and this dish is one of the best ways to experience a variety of fish or sushi, served over sushi rice, in its best and purest form. The true flavors, scents and textures of fish are allowed to come through and not masked by sauces or buried in rolls smothered in sauces - which isn't sushi. What's the point of eating a roll if you can't taste the fish? However, the fish here was as unremarkable as the presentation and the dish was a severe disappointment. The sushi "chef" was a big, stocky white fellow who wore a flat brimmed (not cool) ball cap backwards, a shirt with a sports team logo and wrinkled pants. That smacks of authenticity and professionalism. I observed as he clumsily prepared several rolls with trembling hands and uncertainty. The female server was unprofessional. She stated that she didn't like sushi - then why was she there? A female customer had come in and began a conversation with the server. They obviously knew each other and spoke about things with a familiarity which one could safely assume that the customer was actually a server, too. They complained about other employees, service and other restaurant issues. That was not appropriate in the dining room in front of guests. Ultimately, I was not impressed. I've had some of the best real sushi from all over the world and this never even come close. There is no distinction about Silver Sake which would set it above or apart from other similar restaurants. I believe their Yelp reviews are based on the typical Americanized fake "sushi" experience. It's sad to see all these positive reviews from people who have no clue and think they're having good sushi. I think that the infatuation of my friends with Silver Sake is based upon their personal relationships with the staff and belief that the food is actually good. Trying to explain real sushi to someone is difficult because one can't understand what one doesn't know or has never known. It's like trying to explain color to a blind person who has never had the gift of sight. It's like trying to explain that Kobe or Wagyu beef is better than the beef in a McDonald's cheeseburger to someone who doesn't understand and doesn't know any better. read more

We went in on a Monday evening and immediately got a sports bar vibe, the game was on and the few customers that were there were yelling at the tv, ordering beers, and apparently all knew the waitresses and cook. I knew what I wanted and was craving a fresh rainbow roll and seaweed salad. No seaweed salad on the menu so went with calamari. Boyfriend had a teriyaki chicken and beef bento box. The orders all came out at different times, we didn't get the appetizer first either. Calamari was rubbery, which is a dish that's hit or miss but the chicken and beef were just subpar. The rainbow roll I was so looking forward to was a terrible disappointment. It looked suspicious right away, appearing discolored. I'm sorry I tried it, it was terribly "fishy" my date described it as "skunky." The egg was dry and clumpy as well as the wasabi. We returned it and they didn't charge us but mostly ignored us to chat and show picture on their phones. I should have known better and read the reviews before coming here. I had been here a about a year before and the service and quality were acceptable, but apparently it has gone downhill since. I placed an order to go just after they had opened and was told it would be 20-25 minutes. Not a problem, I ran an errand and got there 30 minutes later. I was told they were almost done as I paid. The place was not that full (about 7 other people there) and they had 3 people working the sushi counter so I didn't see any reason to question that. 20 minutes later I finally had my food in hand and was out the door (I was not even offered an apology for the lateness of the food). I was concerned that since the rolls had been what was holding my order up that I should check the tempura that I had also ordered, but I was already frustrated and just wanted to get home. That was a mistake. I only live a couple of minutes away and it was obvious when I got home that the tempura had been sitting around for quite awhile (probably since the order was supposed to be ready originally). The tempura was cold and soggy. On top of that, the rolls just weren't that good. The fish was not firm and when I first opened the container there was a distinct fishy smell. The avocado on one looked like it had been smeared across (if I didn't know it was supposed to be avocado, I would have thought it to be a smear of wasabi). The scallop garden was disappointing as well with the "tingly" sauce being very bland. Needless to say, I do not intend to return again. read more

O M G I was not a fan of sushi and this place has completely changed my mind! I checked this place out because a friend invited me to go see another mutual friend who is a sushi chef there (shout out to Jon!) I am so glad I went! I can't remember what the first thing we ate was but it was raw fish (big surprise, I know) with soy sauce & sesame seeds, I was wary but I always try everything at least once, and I was so glad, it was delectable!! Soft, just the right consistency, & extra delicious. Next I ordered a calamari stir fry dish of some sort (mostly for the miso soup & salad) the main dish ended up not being my style, either that or I was too impressed by the sushi that Jon had served us while we waited! It was a piece of heaven, I asked him what it was called and he said "I don't know" he had just created it! I couldn't get over how good it was so I ordered some more to take home, by the end of the night it had a name the "NorCal Special" I definitely suggest you get it when Jon is working (Sat. nights). I went here for dinner on a Friday night. It's small, some might consider cramped. Everyone was having fun. The staff was great. Food was amazing. The waitress for my table was really patient. I kept sending her away because my oldest son (8) wasn't having a good time. Another woman came over and whispered to me that I could order pizza from round table if I wanted if the boys wouldn't eat what was in the menu. They like sushi and Japanese food. I told her that I was hoping to get nigiri tobiko for my oldest but it's not on the menu. She could tell he was grumpy, made him promise to be good and she would find out all color of the tobiko they had. She came back and talked to them a few times. He was so happy when she brought him his nigiri with Orange tobiko in the pieces and black and green on the side that he could put on as he pleased. They were so nice. Talked with them about the movie they were going to see. My kids loved the food. We had soft shell crab appetizer and it was great. Both women listened to all of the things that the boys wanted to tell them and they engaged them back in conversation. It made our night really nice. Thank you. My wife loves this place, I'm not so pleased. The sushi is good and plentiful. No concerns there. However, the dine in (table not at the counter) experience is not so good (unless you are a regular). Service is slow, you don't have a dedicated waiter just one of three folks walking around, who often stop to visit with the regulars. The shop itself needs work. Looks hastily thrown together. I would imagine my experience would be better if I was a regular since on both visits, I have seen regulars talking with the staff, getting food extremely quick, and probably getting comps. read more

Pretty good sushi... If I can't make it to Mukunis. We stopped in last week after a nice hike at Ancil Hoffman. I was starving so it seemed to take even longer to get our food. Once everything came out I was happy and everything was good. BBQ Tuna was yummy... Served with a homemade BBQ sauce on a bed of cabbage. The tuna Pepperfin was my favorite! I popped in the other night on the advice of a friend. Came in and the atmosphere was quiet but festive. All the other customers had smiles, seemed to be enjoying their food, and the waitresses were friendly. Sat at the bar and got to listen to the chefs make the food. I've never seen someone cook and be happy and converse with the customers like I did last night. Everyone who approached had a smile on their face and joked around. The food was fantastic. I read through the other reviews and honestly can't see what they're talking about. The flavors and variety were beyond anything I've had in my area. The Bubba Roll was something I would have never thought to create. I was a little skeptical when I saw the ingredients but the moment I popped a piece in my mouth I wanted to start living at this place. Granted, this is more of a bar atmosphere and less like a restaurant atmosphere. If you want some quiet place to go with your kids then this probably isn't the place for you. I noticed Silver Sake when I was shopping at Eve's Market a couple months ago but I finally tried it a few weeks ago. Their slogan is "light and healthy sushi" but the majority of their rolls contain tempura (shrimp, veggie or soft shell crab). Speaking of rolls, there is a looong list of rolls (fairly priced) and hard to choose from! We finally asked the chef/owner (a former Mikuni chef) for some suggestions sans tempura and everything he prepared was really good. My one complaint was the spicy scallop hand roll. Would you guess that it contained a large piece of tempura wedged into the hand roll? Next time I go back I'll have to make sure I enunciate when I say NO TEMPURA. read more

Really decent prices however I think Monday and Tuesdays are when their major specials are featured, just fyi. Really fun place and was pretty crowded for being mid-week. We had some chips and dip which were fried seaweed chips and avocado and tuna pieces- it was really really good! Also had some fresh sashimi which was excellent and a roll that I blanked on the name of it (sorry) but it was legit. I highly recommend this place. Really lucky find on our way to Tahoe!!! We're from Hawaii and craved Japanese food, and omg did we find the right place. We felt right at home. Excellent neighborhood sushi and bento box place, large portions and reasonably priced. Our server was friendly, personable and attentive. We had the cupcake roll, agadashi tofu, sashimi, miso soup, teriyaki chicken and shrimp tempura. Full, fat and extremely happy! I have officially found a place I love better than Mikuni- yeah I said that! I still love Mikuni obviously but this place gives them a run for their money - since they are cheaper!! Ok so the first thing to mention- this place has set the bar high for sushi done light and healthier! They pride themselves on this! And they truly love up to that. She had the miso soup and their namesake roll. She loved it- best roll she's had! We split the Cali roll and it was so good! I had shrimp tempura and it was literally the best I've ever had anywhere hands down and I've tasted many. I ordered seared tuna by mistake and he decided to give me the thing I actually wanted at no additional charge! And it was amazing- the BBQ albacore that is.
