We came here for the first time in many years. Chef John joining the team brought us back. On a Sunday we came for dinner. We had an excellent server though he had enough going on that we were greeted and assured on three occasions that he would be right back. Drinks were good. I ordered a dinner salad and thought the quality excellent. I had crawfish etoufee and wife had a Cajun chicken dish. Both were great but very spicy. I had peanut butter pie for dessert. It was fabulous. We came back for Wednesday lunch. Same drinks (Manhattan mule) were still great. My oyster stew was wonderful. My wife thought she had a great lunch. Peanut butter pie was still fabulous. We had another excellent server. At this time, I can think of only one other open restaurant in Astoria that competes in food quality. With quality comes higher price. We will bring friends here but only those who won't suffer sticker shock. This place is DEFINITELY worth the price in our opinion. read more

This place was such a lovely surprise. We came on a Saturday night without a reservation but found a table on the bar side. We ordered a side of fried oysters as an appetizer, and it was delicious. Not too breaded either. For entrees, we got fish and chips and blackened salmon. My salmon was cooked perfectly and tasty, as well as the mashed potatoes and green beans. But when I tasted the fish and chips, I wish I had ordered that instead! Maybe the best fish and chips I've ever had. Not too breaded with generous portions of halibut and a delicious tartar sauce that looks homemade. The fries tasted a lot like McDonald's fries, so excellent :) For dessert we got the coconut cake. We stumbled across this restaurant in Astoria during the fire and smoke and Covid emergencies. It's a great restaurant with original Cajun-style meals. The roasted oyster decadence is one great meal. I'll try to recreate it at home. The gumbo is also fine We returned the next day tor lunch snd had the best oyster stew ever; it's usually a creamy soup with a few oysters. I'll start with the good- we were seated immediately without having a reservation. Clam chowder and calamari were good. Calamari tasted fresh! We had to wait a really long time for our food and our waitress and maybe manager, apologized quite a bit and offered a free appetizer while we waited. They were very nice. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and very personable. We all had the alderwood planked salmon with dungenous crab in a Rosemary beurre blanc sauce. The salmon was cooked to perfection and we had a great Chardonnay by Canoe Ridge that had a great finish to it. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the Silver Salmon Grille. From the food to the service and everything in between, this was the perfect place to have our Christmas Eve 2017 dinner (plus, they have paper-topped tables and crayons!!). We were a party of eight with a reservation on December 24. Our server was top-notch, I just wish someone would have caught his name (gentleman with dark hair/facial hair and glasses). He was so nice and knowledgeable about everything. We had one person in our party with severe nut and seafood allergies. The server was very accommodating and took every precaution to make sure there was no cross-contamination with his dishes. Between the eight of us, we ordered a little bit of everything: three bottles of wine, two Cajun spencer steaks, two alder-planked salmon dungeness, one scallop special, one tortellini Alfredo, an oyster stew and a kids fish and chips. Everything we ate was worth writing home about. All proteins were cooked perfectly, the garlic mashed potatoes were rich and the butternut squash side was a perfect accompaniment to each dish. And can I just talk about the amazing clam chowder?? It was rich, thick and had tons of huge clam pieces. We were all so impressed. After all of that, we still wanted to check out the dessert tray. Our group ordered two chocolate mousses, a creme brûlée and the Swedish cream/creme. It was all delicious, but the Swedish cream/creme was five star. Thick and pudding-y but not heavy, and it was topped with a tart marionberry sauce. We went to Astoria to spend our Christmas holiday, and I would hands down return to the Silver Salmon Grille again (even though it is an hour and forty-five minutes away). read more

Ate dinner on Tuesday evening. Not exactly a packed house but the chalk board listing specials also said reservations recommended. I immediately asked if I had reservations. I understand if the place has people waiting out tbd door but come on! The host was not friendly and set the tone for the rest of the evening. To reinforce my assertion I pointed to another patron and let it be known she was not comfortable . Things went down hill from there waitress was very unpleasant. For a upscale want to be restaurant this place could use some coaching. Chowder was great! Filet MIGNON WAS Fine but I kept asking just how much better it would have been with a nice server. Bottom line: great service, good atmosphere, clean restaurant, decent menu, decent food but not worth the price we paid. Four us went for a late lunch. The steak tips were tasty but $17 for the small plate. The crab cakes were $17.50 for three of them. They seemed to have a lot of filler and not much crab, again tasty but small for that price, and nothing about them went above and beyond. The cheese-filled tortellini was decent but the sauce was very bland and thin. I added veggies for $5 but could barely tell there were any in there and they seemed to not be fresh. Also I had the blackened salmon with it for $9, which was delicious and perfectly cooked. The seafood stew had a nice flavor but was a small portion that had only a few oysters (4or 5)in it for $18. Stopped in for lunch on our first rainy day in a long time. Met friends in the lounge for a relaxing lunch prior to visiting the Sunday Market. Very high quality food and decent service in the lounge. Other servers kept popping in to watch the football game, so I am not sure if it was that slow in the dining room, or if they were not being attentive to their tables. Moderately priced but not out of line for quality. Beautiful property with a very classy vibe. Food is good overall. However paying $18 for a sandwich, you should get fries that aren't barely an inch long! Oysters are delicious. Service was attentive but our small order took an unusually long time getting out of the kitchen considering the time of day and number of customers. The clam chowder and garlic cheese bread were excellent. The oyster stew was very spendy and a disappointment based on expectations set by a friend. There were very few pieces of oyster and the stew itself had a very unusual sweet taste that overpowered any taste of oysters. Very disappointed. We visit Astoria once a year for the last 15 years. On this trip we have always enjoyed the food at Silver Salmon. I ordered the Halibut with Dungeness crab, and blue cheese. The halibut was so small, that $32.00 was so overpriced. I never found any blue cheese or Dungeness crab. The fish was very dry. I took the sauce from my mothers steak to dip the fish took get some flavor. Also the dinner salad was very unappetizing. The lettuce was wilted and the ranch dressing was very watery and didn't even taste like ranch. My mother ordered the Top Sirlon steak. It was a chunk of meat with little flavor to eat. If I could put a half I would. My little brother and I came in tonight, after working late and still in Carhartt work pants and tee-shirts. I run a crab boat in Alaska and the on the coast. My little brother works on a large king crab boat in Alaska. This is a town that is in large part successful because of the port and the fishing community. Yet after 20 minutes and some awkward looks we still were left unattended to. No drinks, passed by many times by multiple people on staff without a look or even an acknowledgement. We got up and left because the service was so poor. On a side note, it's the one year anniversary of our father passing. We were only trying to get a nice dinner to celebrate his life and get to bed because we have boat work early in the morning. I've been here before but will not be coming back. You shouldn't ever judge a book from its cover. On a side note we had prompt service and smiling faces at the supper club just down the street. Spent 3 days vacationing and fooding around Portland, including a drive up to Astoria and the coast for a day trip. We dined at the Silver Salmon Grille for a late lunch, off of the dinner menu, and believe it was one of the top 2 meals we enjoyed on our trip, which included several of Portland's top restaurants. We both enjoyed salmon dishes, one stuffed with crab and Gruyere, and the other cooked over an alder plank. Both were cooked perfectly, fresh, and extremely flavorful. The planked salmon (with dungeness on top) was the winner, but both were excellent. The side vegi medley was more than the typical, sauces were amazing, and desserts looked wonderful (but no room after dinner). Our waiter was very professional and courteous, and the room was inviting. And this was the off season....great job SSG! If local, this would be our go to place for wonderful seafood..... I do not lightly disparage a business since I know that business owners are a hard working lot who, for the most part, try to do the best they can in sometimes difficult situations. I also find it interesting that I am not commenting so much on my own review as the Silver Salmon's reaction to a bad review they received in the weekend supplement of the local Astoria Daily News. My wife and I were at the bar in the Silver Salmon (something we do on occasion as they make kick-ass martini's) when two of the barkeeps were talking about the bad review in the paper. In my innocence and naivety I said, that while I agreed with the paper than the service and quality of food in the restaurant was not what I would describe as enjoyable, that my wife and I DID enjoy sitting at the bar for a couple of drinks. We were well into our first martini and seriously thinking about doubling down, when one of the barkeeps let me know in a not so subtle and simmering manner that he did not care what anyone thought and the newspaper was not going to get anymore advertising business from them. And with that he proceeded to ignore us for the rest of our stay. As my wife and I were seriously planning on spending not only more time and more money at his establishment, we both felt unwelcome and took our business elsewhere for the evening. I used to have a nightclub with live music, two bars and a full service restaurant. There was never a time when I did not welcome criticism as well as compliments. The compliments were nice, but the criticisms are what I learned from. With an attitude like we experienced that night, I dare suspect there is no room for improvement at the Silver Salmon. I'm not usually a fan of salmon unless it's sushi or smoked, but on a Sunday night in Astoria, there weren't a lot of nicer dinner options for my boyfriend and I to walk to from our hotel. We were seated promptly, but there weren't a lot of patrons at all. We were seated right underneath the Air Conditioning fan despite plenty of tables around us, and had to deal with frozen gusts blowing over us on a night that wasn't that warm. We both ended up straying from the salmon and going with the petite filet dinner. We were given bread while we waited, and waited, and waited. Finally, for what seemed like half an hour, our server came to tell us there was a mix-up, and that we would have to wait a few more minutes. He grabbed the empty bread bowl that we chowed down waiting for an actual meal and offered more. Thinking our food would be just a few more minutes, we declined. It ended up being a few more than just a "few more", and finally we got our dinner. My boyfriend asked what the vegetables would be and the server told us a "green mix", but there wasn't much in the mix that was green, and my boyfriend couldn't eat some of what was on the plate. We both ordered medium steaks, but his was more like medium-well. When our food arrived, the server also said that they would "make it right". I assumed at the time that it meant at least a percentage off the meal. When our check arrived (by some other worker we hadn't seen before) there were no adjustments made. Just as the random worker took our payment away, our server came back with a plate of plastic desserts trying to offer us one for free. After eating a whole basket of bread and our dinner, why would we want dessert, even if it was for free? It seemed like a poor afterthought, and after we witnessed people enter before us and leave after us as we waited patiently for dinner, the last thing we wanted to do was stay longer to freeze and stuff ourselves to death while we ate dessert. The food was fine for what it was, but the experience wasn't great and it definitely soured our opinion of this place. If we ever return to Astoria, I don't think this will be on our list, unfortunately. read more

We stopped in here for lunch after running a 10k over the Astoria Bridge. We. Were. Starving. The menu has a lot of fresh choices, and none of us were disappointed. We ordered oysters, clam chowder, a cheese burger, and a Monte Cristo-type sandwich that I can't remember the actual name of. Everything was good. I loved the clam chowder. My cheeseburger was small, but had a fresh and hand-made patty, which was quite tasty. The oysters were perfect, and came with potato latkes that were good. My sister said the Monte Cristo-thing was really good. It had avocado, bacon, turkey, cheese...yum. The steak fries were waaaaaay overcooked, and frankly, if I were a waiter, I wouldn't have delivered them to the table, but I was too full from the chowder and burger to care. The service was excellent, and no one seemed to mind that we were in our running clothes. They even redeemed our "clam bucks" from the race, and we each saved 5-bucks on our lunches. If they hadn't burnt my fries, I'd give them another star. But they saved me 500 calories, so good job, I guess. I'd eat here again, certainly. read more
