Let me tell you, you can NEVER go wrong with eating or ordering from here cause I have ordered a plethora of things and never dislike anything that I have received. I have gone here for years, have seen parties and weddings here, hell I even held my graduation party here haha. They were very accommodating when I was planning a party for 60 people here. Now let me tell you, inside this basket they will load it up with stir-fried shrimp, squid, mushroom, scallop, and veggies to fill your heart's desire. Pescetarians, be aware that the BIRD'S NEST may be the best of Chinese cuisine that you'll ever encounter! How good is the crunchy BIRD'S NEST and accompanying fillings? It was so good a group from another table was intrigued by how appetizing the BIRD'S NEST looked and asked what we were eating. GHETTO AS FAAAHK.. I hate using the word ghetto. Growing up in Chicago it becomes a common part of your dialog. Over the years, I had to learn when to properly use it and not do so for every little damn thing. Like most Chicagoans, (That includes you too suburbanites) But in this case, it's relevant. It's ghetto up in here! If you plan on visiting, its food is much like a fortune cookie. The cookie may not be great (the vessel, the restaurant, its workers, the cleanliness, etc) but the magic contained inside is where the treat is found. (The fortune, the taste) Order only the best dishes and you'll dig it. Go beyond the normal stuff you always order at Chinese restaurants. Seriously. I've had takeout and dined in. Ordering the right entrees are key. I suggest going through reviews with a fine-toothed comb, then view Yelp photos and then surf Instagram food porn. I've managed to pick all the best dishes and have been pleasantly surprised with food choices. Now, the bird's nest, often gets praises, but to me it's the blandest dish they offer and these guys are not the greatest at following directions if requesting something spicy. I had to douse mine in Sriracha sauce just to eat it. Definitely not good "to go" either. The seafood potstickers, when fresh, are pretty fantastic. When the appetizer arrives at the table the sweet smells of seafood enter your nostrils and the pleasant taste should cause an appreciative sigh. What's so ghetto? Service and the location. I mean.. sure, its Uptown, but I'm not talking about the neighborhood. The restaurant attracts oddities and the workers do not know how to deal or cope. Also, there's a difference in the level of service depending on who is taking the order. The older waiter, will take special requests to make a dish spicy or extra fried. While another will say, it's as it is. I've ordered lunch specials and requested it spicy (different time of the day) and the dude waiter obliges. And its awesome, because it was made to order. Spicy and tasty. - Moving on, one occasion this past summer some dudes proceeded to dump out sand from their sneakers onto the middle of the floor. Between two guys, there was a sizable mound. They did this despite gawks and jaw drops from other customers and glares from the oldest waiter. I guess they had a great beach day, got plastered at Crew and stopped in for a bite and foot cleanse. Seriously.. Who would clean off their bare feet & tap out shoes in a restaurant and then leave like it's not a big deal. A six inch sand dune left as part of their tip. And, these guys had the nerve to leave a light tip. - The same night, but later, I was dining with family. A transient walked in off the street, I knew because I could smell him enter. He wanted to hit people up for money. Anyone could surmise he was homeless by his look, his dirtied hands and ragged-soiled attire. When he saw me and my party I knew he would approach us first and so, he did. All the Asians huddled in fear. And once he had had his fill(donations), he approached the other patrons. That's when the waiter jumped in to stop him. She quickly shooed him out. I looked over at my cousin and said "I bet you this moron thinks we're related or knew each other and that's why she didn't say anything in the first place" Mind you, when he approached us I glared at her and her co-workers directly, with my eyes saying "seriously, what the FUCK!!!!" And guess what.. that's exactly what this idiot said to me. "I thought he was your relative" I'm pretty sure this is something that happens from time to time out here, homeless people begging inside. But for her to give us that response, instant hate for this place. No apology, she acted like the shit was no big deal. I swear if a situation goes down like that again(anywhere), I'll tell the asshole waiter to get the person a chair and they can join me as an invited guest. Although the food started out tasting pretty fantastic, the flavors soured pretty quickly after that. I've never been back. - The Men's room is weird. Over the years of having some successes in business & revenue, you'd think they could have updated it. One can't help but to have an unrealistic fear of getting shanked with a fishbone. And the murder weapon would probably come from the fish tank. - There's an unused stage which looks like it was once used to house a Chinese hand-puppet show. Marionettes or glove puppetry. - Last. What is the deal with the fish tank? Could you clean the damn thing once in awhile and for goodness sakes don't use toilet water! The water is staining the tank! If you've ever owned a fish tank, you know when a person is being lazy. Poor fish. I hope when they die they aren't used in the potstickers. Had I not experienced the last situation, I would have rated them four stars. The availability of good Chinese fare till midnight on the North side is unheard of. F- this place. read more

3.5 stars. I'm not a fan, but I wouldn't say that it's just okay. Silver Seafood offers authentic Hong Kong style Chinese food served in gigantic portions. We selected this place based on a few reviews we've seen online, so we went over there and took a quick glance at their menu and saw that a lot of the prices were reasonable. The Yelp and Zagat stickers on the window also convinced us to try it out. My friend ordered Egg rolls and the Seafood Chow Mein and I got the Vegetarian Tofu Curry. They were huge! We couldn't finish them, so we had plenty of left overs. Our service was great and I have no complaints there. Our waitress was attentive and kept our beverages full. However, ambiance is very tacky. It's full of Feng Shui decorations from China Town and the bathroom was disgusting. I went to wash my hands and I was totally mortified at how filthy it was. The walls were dirty with graffiti. (Mind you, I'm used to Chinese restaurants not having very clean bathrooms so I avoid them as much as I can.) I wonder how they even pass government inspection. Ordered takeout on the 4th of July cuz that's what how the husband and I started hanging out before we dated and got married. So this year with the holiday on a Tuesday and much housework to be done, we kept the tradition alive. We ordered the beef chow fun (minus bean sprouts) and the eggplant dish. Eggplant dish came with a little pail of rice. Both dishes were very tasty but the chow fun could have used a few more pieces of the tasty beef. Both dishes were very generously sized. Good value for the price. We also ordered a lychee mango smoothie. Unlike many places that offer smoothies, theirs here are a pretty good size. Very flavorful. Takeout came with full plastic silverware and fortune cookies. The staff is super friendly. We've dined in before- good free parking in the strip mall lot adjacent to the restaurant but you need to put a placard the restaurant gives you so you don't get towed or ticketed. I have eaten at Silver Seafood several times in recent months, after learning about its existence recently. Each time, I selected one of the family set dinners, which are a great deal. It was so nice to find a restaurant on the North Side serving traditional Hong Kong/Cantonese cuisine, and has a roomy dining room. Parking is also convenient with the free adjacent lot. The only minuses were that the restaurant decor is a little outdated, the vibe a little quiet (it was never crowded during each of our visits even on Friday/Saturday nights), and the service a little slow (though the food comes out quickly). However, I was very satisfied with the quality of food and the generous portions. In addition, the menu does not have as much variety as some of the Chicago Chinatown restaurants. Dishes I particularly enjoyed during the three dinners include the ginger onion twin lobster, ginger onion crab, chan giang pork ribs, mixed seafood basket, steamed oysters with black bean sauce, and combination fried rice with chinese sausage. This restaurant is a great option for those on the North Side who want a proper Cantonese dinner and are short on the time to drive all the way down to Chinatown. We came here to check out their Dim Sum. It is made to order. The choices are limited, however. They have your basic dim sum plates. Aside from dim sum, we also had the clams with black bean sauce. It was very tasty and delicious. The service is attentive and friendly. Some dim sum plates worth mentioning: the corn dumpling was pretty tasty. I have not had that anywhere else. You get 3 of them. The custard bun was nice and hot, but the filling was lacking in my opinion. The rice noodle dishes were not up to par, I would pass on those. The spare ribs were pretty good. Overall, the dim sum options here are lacking. They don't have the usual egg custard tart or tofu pudding with the sweet ginger syrup. Those are dim sum staples for me. If you are looking to get some good Dim Sum, I would not recommend this place. Rather, check out Furama across the street. I have lived in Buena Park for 17 years, and I have known that Silver Seafood is on Broadway, across the street from the Uptown Theater. To be perfectly honest, I have driven by this restaurant for years and have been turned off by their awning and sign graphics. I can only imagine that the interior is as depressing as the exterior. I would have never considered trying it until last night, after I saw it featured on Check Please! After finding their menu on-line (a difficult task since they do not have a website), I gave them a call. The server could barely speak English. On top of that, the room was very noisy, so I had to YELL my order over the phone. It took 10 minutes to place a simple order, and I almost hung up half way through the process. The only thing that kept my cool was that the server eventually gave the phone to someone else to finish taking my order. After telling me that it would take 45 minutes, the food was at my door and piping hot within 15 minutes. That's what I call FAST!!! I have to say it was very good. The beef was tender; the shrimp were large and tasty and the hot and sour soup was loaded with seafood (even if I could not tell what kind). All-in-all, not bad. With the glut of Thai, Vietnamese and Korean restaurants in my neighborhood, it's actually refreshing to find a good Chinese restaurant. Oh, and by the way. I travel several times a year to China. Definitely experienced better. We visited this place upon learning that LSC across the street was randomly closed at 9pm on a Sunday... after getting there. The decor is nice, a very jiu lou feel. Bright room, white table cloth, Chinese lanterns, a mirror to make the room look bigger, a good number of big round tables with lazy susans. Yep. China. To be honest, the food wasn't bad, pretty average. We picked 4 dishes, family style, was very full for $15pp total. The clam in black bean sauce is pretty tasty. Just don't eat the ones that aren't open! They're not very fresh smelling, so who knows how long the dead ones had been dead :/ The salt and pepper squid was bland and the squid seemed overfried to the point it was crunchy. In their defense, it seems like kind of a canto-ish style Chinese place, but don't try their garlic eggplant and expect the delicious Sichuan version. The beef in sate sauce was also a bit overly sweet, but savory and saucy enough, pretty good with rice. They offered us a sweet red bean soup was dessert... it was very sweet, but a good way to finish the meal. The service was pretty atrocious though, and why this is 2 stars instead of 3. Yes, we were there past dinner rush, on a Sunday, so I am totally fine with people in the middle of clocking out or chatting at a table in the back. But somebody keep an eye on your damn customers to at least see they're ready to order and are done with their meal, etc. Whatever. Silver Seafood represents the deliciousness of Cantonese/Hong Kong style dishes. We loved the seafood crispy chow mein, shrimp with walnuts and the basic Young Chow fried rice. The seafood was perfectly cooked, plump and tender. The sauces were light and packed with flavor. The baby bok choy in our chow mein was crunchy and fresh. Fried rice is actually hard to get right... the wok flavor is hard to achieve and often, restaurants make the rice oily and drenched in nothing but soy sauce. I tried their Kung Pao fish fillet lunch special. It was not bad for $6.75. But I was not a big fan of their beef rice noodle with soy sauce. When I was looking at the Chinese menu for that dish, it was supposed to be something else that I always like, but when I got it, it was actually really wet with soy sauce. I guess they really did add soy sauce to their dish vs what I was thinking of. So that dish was a little too salty for me. In the past, I've tried their walnut shrimp and it was good. Came here for dinner with a friend on my birthday. I'm not sure what time they close, but we got there around 10:30 on a Tuesday night, and he and I were the only patrons present. We were quickly seated and orders were placed. I looked around and it was fairly clean and decorated like any other fair-priced Chinese restaurant would be. I had to use the restroom and when I walked in, I noted the lights were completely out. I ran back out, ok...walked, and told one of the guys working about it. I couldn't hold it, so I ran, yes...ran this time, back in, held the door open with a child's high chair, and used the toilet. While I was washing my hands, a cute older woman came in and mounted some industrial-looking lamp on the door of one of the stalls. Whatever works, right? Here's a tip: the place is called Silver SEAfood, not Golden Beef or Diamond Chicken. The restaurant is telling you - up front and without hesitation - that you come here to eat the stuff that grows and lives in water. I perused the seafood menu from their web site and picked out a couple of options. Then, I called and asked which of my options did the worker like. "Clams in Black Bean Sauce." You're on. I ordered. Ten minutes. Jumped in the car and drove to Uptown. I was nervous to park in the lot. I have heard horror story after horror story about people getting towed. Park in the lot and go across the street? Tow. Park in the lot and stroll down the block? Tow. Park in the lot and go to a restaurant in the strip mall? Tow. I wasn't about to go out like that. So, I parked in the lot, exchanged side/evil eyes with the lot snitch and rounded the corner to go into Silver Seafood. To my surprise, there was a party going on, complete with a magic show (I think it was that guy from Saved by the Bell). No one was working the front counter. I looked around the dining room and didn't see any wait staff. I was starting to get nervous. The lot attendant looked like he didn't play. In fact, he walked in front of Silver Seafood, stared me in the eye, held up a cell phone and smirked. Oh, hay-ell naw! I looked again for wait staff. Nothing. I was quickly turning into DMX and my mind was about to be lost up in there, up in there. A lightbulb went off and I called the restaurant. It rang six times before someone ambled to the front counter. She answered and I walked in to get my order. She seemed annoyed but, not only was my food getting cold, I had a car to save. And I let her know that if it was towed -- "Your car won't be towed! Now, here's your food!" Um, ok. I grumbled all the way to my car (not towed; the attendant was clearly disappointed) and home. "I KNOW she didn't talk to me that way! I don't even WANT this food anymore! This BETTER be good. Blahblahblah." But, I was hungry and it smelled pretty good AND the dish had been recommended. I opened the bag, spooned out some rice and prepared to eat just a few clams. "Mmm. That's pretty good." Chomp chomp. "Mmm. Maybe I'll just have a few more." Chomp chomp. "Ooh, yeah. That's gooooood." Before I knew it, I was sucking on clam shells, had black bean sauce in my hair, was breathing heavily and, somehow, was wearing only a tank top and jams. I didn't know what happened. I was confused and didn't know where I was. I felt used, dirty and cheap. If there was a way to give 0 stars, I would. This place is completely unprofessional. My family and I have been going for years now, and we thought we had some sort of rapport with the staff. A few months ago, we decided to hold my nephew's Baptism reception here, scheduled for July 2013. We made a reservation months in advance and everything seemed fine. We come to finalize the menu today, and the manager explains that they cancelled our reservation because they took another reservation which shut down the restaurant- WITH OUT TELLING US AT ALL. I can understand that a larger reservation taking precedence over a smaller reservation. That is simply business, and I don't care about that. But the fact that they simply CANCELLED WITH OUT SO MUCH AS A PHONE CALL BETWEEN TWO MONTHS IS RIDICULOUS. WE HAD THE INVITATIONS PRINTED WITH THEIR ADDRESS, AND YOU CAN'T CALL WITHIN TWO MONTHS? Don't be scared by the decor of this place. It's definitely nothing fancy..just some tables and banquet chairs, but the food is pretty good! I know this is a seafood place which I hear is great, but I come for my peking duck fix. It's a two course peking duck meal and it leaves me feeling satisfied every time. I'd recommend getting the moo shu wrappers instead of the boa buns (just personal preference). I've been here many times for the duck and look forward to trying their seafood next time! This is what I get almost every time I go: Fresh steamed bass (like, swimming in a tank in the back fresh), ong choy with garlic sauce, chinese sausage fried rice and beef with green onion (my boyfriend's choice, not mine). Having grown up eating in Chinatown, NYC every Sunday evening I can honestly say this is one of the only places that is reminiscent of those happy days. I think it's a fresh fish. Came to this restaurant for a wedding reception. Gave it two stars bc the food was decent. The only dish that really stood out to us was a dish with a crab claw type puff. The puff was filled with real crab meat as well as the crab meat from the attached claw. All other dishes were alright. This restaurant lost 3 stars for their service. While some of the servers were nice, there were others that weren't as courteous. All food was being placed on a lazy Suzan. When we saw food coming, we tried to rearrange plates (which were huge) to make room for the new plate. At one point, a server just stacked a plate of food on top of two plates still containing food. Why would one do that if we're still eating?! Then they started clearing plates to give us fresh ones while we were eating. The best mongolian beef I've found outside of Chinatown. The kung-pao chicken is HOT! Every place always puts the little pepper picture next to the kung-pao chicken but this place doesn't mess around. I liked the pot-stickers, they were big and meaty but my fiancee thought the flavor was off and gave up on them after 1/2 of one. The eggroll is lightly fried, too flaky/pastry like for my taste, but the flavor is average. EDIT: October 25, 2007. I think they might be suffering from the Check Please effect.. We gave them another try, and the delivery took over 70+ minutes, and the Mongolian beef this time was not very good at all. my first 5 star review! First I want to state that some people on here give way too much precedence to service and cleanliness for a Chinese restaurant. It's a right of passage for a Chinese restaurant to get shutdown for a health violation! (jk) Service may not be as good as your neighborhood Applebee's. Maybe because the servers are old school Chinese people not willing to put on a fake smile with 20 flares on their uniform. The bottom line is that Chinese and Asians value food quality and value, not service and ambiance so if you're looking for good sweet and sour chicken with a birthday candle and song, probably want to start somewhere else. It's all about expectations. Whew, with that off my chest, this restaurant is delish! We were looking to fulfill our typical Argyle Street fix but we decided to change it up a bit and check out this place after several friends recommended it. Looked like a standard Chinese restaurant that you'd find in Chinatown. We ordered the dungeoness crab with garlic ginger sauce and a seafood vegetable noodle hot pot. Best dungeoness crab i've ever had! The brown sauce looks like standard brown sauce mush, but it was amazing! The hot pot was so fresh, light and tasty! The squid was more tender than usual. Super food! Super staff! Must be good because most of the customers are Asian. Salt and pepper pork chops are amazing as is the chicken lo mein! Salt and pepper shrimp are super! And the chicken and bitter melon is not for everyone, but is excellent. Did not have the steamed oysters this time, but they are a meal in them self. It is a must try restaurant. read more

The food at the oddly unassuming restaurant is spectacular! And, the prices are phenomenal, too. I started with the Hot and Sour Seafood Soup - incredible! Oh... emmmm.... GEEEEEEEEE. I love this place. For me, this is the best take out in Chicago. I enjoy their General Tso's Chicken. I order peanuts to be added to it. It is perfectly breaded and is coated with a sweet and soury tangy sauce that will make you lick your lips, the fork and fingers. I will assume you might use your hands and go all in with your face because it is good. For starters, I usually will go with egg rolls which are just okay. Kind of heavy breaded wrapping paper that is not my favorite. However, the Crab Ragoon is darn good but I have yet to meet a piece of fried dough, stuffed with crab and cream cheese that I have yet to like. And, you get some sweet/sour sauce to dab into? Took my mom here this week, she wanted some seafood- but did not want to spend big bucks. She loves Shaw's, but she would not let me pay. Got to love the out-of-town guests who want great food really cheap. You normally get what you pay for. Well, for once, we got quite a bit more than we paid for. I had the scallops with veggies- it was perfect. Huge scallops, great sauce, but not too much, zucchini, bok choy, mushrooms (a variety of them), carrots, etc. Scrumptious!! My mother ordered the steamed clams- I knew she was not totally sure what she would get, and I was right (got to love when that happens). She had the black bean sauce, mild, with them. They were good, not great. But a heaping huge portion. She was upset that they were just steamed clams- no veggies. That is what the menu said, and that is what she got. No false advertising here. My meal was big enough to feed both my mother and I, and still have some left over. Hers too! The pot stickers were OK, nothing to write home about. Oh, they do have parking in the lot next door, but you do need a tag from them. My Mom wants to come back. Good enough for me! read more

I love seafood. I love fresh seafood. I love eating late. I love doing all of these things on a budget. Silver seafood is awesome. Free parking, late night menu (half price), super quick service. The wait staff isn't overly friendly, but that is no surprise at any good chinese food spot. Hong Kong style food is pretty darn good. I highly recommend the shrimp and walnuts, spicy smelt, and spicy tofu. These are my favorites. You really cant go wrong with anything on the menu though. Make sure you get a parking pass from them, they will tow you out the lot before you even get your carryout. read more

We've been going to Silver Seafood for a few years now (started going before their appearance on Check Please!), and I have to say the service was much friendlier this time. I'd love to give them 5 stars, but some of the dishes aren't fantastic and the decor has remained the same over the years, so it's not for everyone. But people come here for the food -- specifically the seafood. So if you are new to Silver Seafood and a little intimidated by the long menu, permit me to make a few recommendations: - Go with a group (4-8 people) so you can order several dishes (or just order a lot and take home leftovers). - Order the seafood potstickers instead of the crab rangoon for an appetizer (and if you're really adventurous try the intestines). - Get one chow fun noodle dish and one fried rice dish (either pineapple or chinese sausage) and skip the white rice. - If you like spicy food, try a "hot pot" dish and ask for extra chili sauce on the side. - Get at least one vegetable -- such as chinese broccoli in oyster sauce or hollow vegetable in garlic (but they are pretty similar to each other). - Try a "salt and spice" dish (crab or smelt) for some finger lickin' food. - Don't be put off by the simple english names of the food. "Fish fillet with pork" is actually a mound of delicate fried fish with portabella mushrooms and a little bit of pork served in a pie dish over a bed of perfectly cooked baby bok choy. - Skip the shark fin soup and let them keep swimming! read more

I enjoy seafood and they had one that I have not had before. The shrimp chop suey was flavored well and the serving was more than adequate. The soup that came first was excellent. The place is roomy and popular with the Asian community judging by the customers that I saw. It is a worthy place to eat. read more
