SilverRock Golf Course located in La Quinta is a fun and aesthetically pleasing course to play. It's nestled against a dry, rocky mountain, where they claim you may occasionally see some mountain rams near or on the golf course. I, unfortunately didn't see any of these majestic creatures on the day I played. I was able to book my tee time directly through their website a few weeks in advanced. I picked the earliest tee time since July in these parts will easily hit triple digit degrees by 11am. The pro shop is something out of Frontierland in Disneyland. You feel like you're about to go on that Big Thunder Mountain roller coaster. The practice green is small while the complimentary driving range has plenty of space; grab your cart because it's a good distance away from the clubhouse. Depending on your (modest) skill level, the course has 6 different tee boxes to wet your appetite. The course is challenging with more than enough sand traps and water hazards. Be weary of the desert landscape if you hit some errant shots. There may not be rows of huge trees to block your way, but there's plenty of desert environment and plants to knock you off par. A few holes will play alongside the rocky mountain I mentioned and it's a great backdrop for pictures if you have time to snap some. Look out for some of the gullies that cut through some of the holes in the back nine. Although, in the heat of July, conditions were still great. Greens were running well, sand traps were nicely combed, and the fairways/roughs were neatly cut. Trees were never really an issue but if you hit it too far out, you may have some desert issues to deal with. Golf carts are equipped with GPS but they are not quite exactly zeroed in. Overall, I had a great experience playing at SilverRock Golf Course. I'll be looking forward to a future return and maybe then, I'll see some rams. I just wanted to hit a bucket of balls on a nice driving range, and saw that they are open to the public. Wrong choice. It was ridiculously expensive, in the midst of all the construction (dirt, chainlink fences, etc), everyone is driven by cart a long way to the range, with no restrooms in sight, with a waiting line standing there to hit balls. My suggestion is to avoid it for a few more years. read more

What a huge disappointment! After viewing the website which makes no mention of all the construction and paying huge green fees, I was shocked over and over with the lack of quality of this course. There should have been some adjustment to the green fees for the lack of the quality of the facilities and the detractions from the beauty of the course. I would have ranked this facility as 'ok' but it gets a 'could've been better' rating for being so overpriced for 'the experience'. The first disappointment was when we pulled up and there were two portable buildings and a trailer clubhouse. When looking at their website, it appears to be a beautifully manicured course and facility which it is not. With the green fees charged, I was expecting so much more having played another course a few days earlier that was slightly more expensive but the 'real deal' for golf in the La Quinta area. The driving range and chipping area are ok but it's 1/4 mile away down a dirt trail. They do have range balls included in the cost, and a PA system to announce the groups. You get back in your cart and take that horrible dusty gravel trail back to the #1 tee. There is construction absolutely everywhere and it totally destroys the ambiance of the course around all the framed and partially built buildings. The course itself was only in fair shape. One of the greens was totally shot with an orange fungus and there was no way to properly putt over that mess. A couple of other greens had the fringe mowed down and a gravelly substance all over the fringe. On some of the holes once you get away from all the construction there is beautiful scenery. The overall course layout is good but destroyed by the fair conditions of the fairways and bad greens. There is also one hole with a ravine running right through the middle of it that wasn't much fun. The potential is there but the construction as mentioned before was shocking and very detracting from the implied ambiance that the website showed. The pace of play was awful. We teed off at 11:20 am and finished in 5-1/2 hours. We waited on almost every hole. The marshall was friendly enough but he needed to tell the groups in front of us to pick up the pace. On one par five there were four groups on the hole at the same time; one on the green, one waiting to hit approach shots, my group, and a group on the tee. Unbelievable. The staff wasn't very welcoming or friendly. Wait a year or two to go here if you go at all, or call first and ask how their construction is going. My friend who recommended this course was appalled when he heard what it was like; in the past when he golfed here this was a gorgeous course and a great experience. Not anymore. read more

First time out in two years due to a health problem that is now fixed. Super hot June day. You can only make a reservation for two or more players so I ended up paying extra as a walk-on. Cart guys are great. One single in front of me and I didn't see anyone else till I ran into a foursome on the 18th (temporary par 3). I played the green or senior tees at 5089 yards. I think of this as a target golf course where you have to pick a target on every shot that keeps you on the short grass. Selecting the right tee minimizes the need for layups and makes for more fun. Tees are good, fairways not so good, greens are very slow, traps are OK. Marshall super nice. Lots of house and resort construction along the way. read more

SilverRock is slowly becoming my favorite golf course in the California desert. Pristine fairways, beautifully manicured greens and a friendly staff. It can be a bit windy at times in La Quinta so make sure to check that beforehand. One round was so windy it was nearly unplayable--however, the course did give us the option beforehand to cancel without penalty, so that was really on us. I agree with the other reviews about the absurd focus on pace of play. We played as a foursome and finished in 4 hours and 15 minutes. We were not held up, but neither was the group behind us ever seen and yet various marshalls pestered us all through the round. While the course is nestled under the mountains and picturesque, the significant on-going construction and lack of amenities probably means you could spend that much money elsewhere and have a more enjoyable experience. read more

There's several issues with the staff at this course. Definitely do not trust what they say on the phone because it will be a different story when you show up. In my lifetime I have played all the legendary courses including Augusta National, Torrey Pines, St. Andrews, etc. and I think this course has the potential to be one of the best in the world. We just played this course yesterday. I wanted to play earlier but one of my friends has a stiff back. We started at 8 and once we hit the back nine the heat was horrible. It's why you pay only 41 bucks. The course was very challenging from the blue tees. I could have carded a 43 on the front but one of the challenges was almost bar none every green had massive bunkers surrounding the green. Needless to say you better be able to get out of traps in one if you want to score. The greens surprisingly were not fast. I'm a 24 handicap and shot over my handicap carding a 103. Believe it or not it could have been a lot higher. Some of the fairways are beat up but the strength of this course is its layout. There are very few gimme holes. You'll be playing in dead bunkers which are placed along the sides of almost every hole. The sand is hard so I had little trouble hitting out of these. My recommendation is to play first thing in AM and get out by 11 AM. There is construction going on but it only really impacted one hole. I won't pay full price unless the course is finished and slight improvements are made, however this is a steal if you want to play a challenging course in the La Quinta area. read more

I am a La Quinta resident and I booked a Tee time for myself and 3 guests online for March 22, 2019! When I received my email confirmation, it specifically said "4 players at $60.00 per player for a Total of $240.00"! I notified my group that it would be $60 per guy! After I checked in and paid my $60.00 I went to wait for my group! When they checked in, they were told that their rate would be $119.00! I went to the Pro Shop to inquire what happened and proceeded to be lectured by the Staff! Bottom line, the City of La Quinta should be ashamed of the reservation system and more ashamed of the Pro Shop Staff! I will never play there again! Hi read more

I want to update my review after Randy's response, which I appreciate. On our pace of play, we never encountered the group behind us, so if pace of play was an issue it started there. The Marshal even commented on how fast the group in front of us played and my main issue with the staff is not with marshaling fast play. Randy, the tone of your response sets the tone for the staff, its the customers fault. Please read reviews before you book a tee time. First the course Layout has potential despite some blind shots and strange holes that make you layup, but like I said it has potential. The greens were not in good shape, 4 was unplayable. Par 3 might be the best holes on the course and the overall condition of the bunkers and surrounds was poor for a course wanting $100 a round. The Staff Just wow! Whoever is the GM of this course needs to train the staff on customer service. Like others said the Marshal was on us but we were playing at a 4 hour and 30 minute pace and the group behind us was never seen. The group in front of us was playing fast, I did not have an issue pushing fast play. I have an issue with the attitude. The cart staff was rude, aloof and not welcoming to start your round. No one smiled or had a good attitude. You are in the service industry, at the very least smile. Overall Unless there is a major overall on the condition of the course and the staff I will not come back. There is so much golf in the greater Palm Springs area, why deal with uptight, non friendly, expensive golf, with pour playing conditions. read more

Wow I'm wondering where Lee O. plays regularly. I'm a single digit and I thought greens were an excellent speed. Just find your line. Some fairway issues as he stated. I was fine with quality of traps. Ladies in proshop friendly. Outside staff exceptional. If I were still working in the business I would have tried to "steal" the young man who helped us when we dropped our clubs off. Yesterday was the first time I ever played here. We played 18 at our course then came here for another 18. It was hot so we were moving. Husband and I started at 11 and we were done by 130. We let a single play through. But we did skip a hole because a foursomes didn't have the courtesy to let us play through and although marshal was there he didn't talk to us or them (that I saw). Cart girl served us beverages and when it was her last pass she let us know. A lot of maintenance people on course (considering what I'm used to - in summer after 10 am) but they were always aware of us as players. I had a hard time conceptualizing distance. It looked shorter than it was (and said on GPS). My problems not theirs. Plus almost drove one into canal I couldn't see. Again my fault. Didn't play great but will definitely do better next time with knowledge of course. Is the back nine considered easier? Shot 3 over on back. Enjoyed! read more

A great golf course with very scenic holes. Many holes border the mountainside. Different tee boxes for every talent level. I would give 5 stars except for two reasons: the rental equipment could be better (though it was fairly priced); and the service staff could be a little more attentive. I've been playing SilverRock for nearly 15 years and have always considered it one of the finer courses in the valley. Unfortunately today did not live up to the reputation. The greens were in a word, awful. Many bare spots and bumpy. Fairways were not in very good condition either. The few bunkers I was in looked like that had been flooded. 71° and sunny in Palm Springs? Yeah, it doesn't get any better than that. That's what my friend and I experienced yesterday while golfing at SilverRock. And not only was the weather perfect, but so was the course. And the staff was great, couldn't be better. From the starter who greeted us in the parking lot to the friendly girl working the counter at the grill to the beverage cart person and right down to the guys cleaning our clubs at the end of our round. Everyone was above and beyond nice. Management is picking some great employees and they should let the employees know they're doing a great job. As far as the course, the conditions were absolutely perfect. This was our second time playing the course (last time was about three years ago) and both my friend and I had forgotten how challenging some of the holes were. Challenging, but fair. I was in the PS area for about a week and did a lot of golfing, and this was definitely my favorite course. Five stars all around! read more

On the second hole, off the Tee I tore a few ligaments in my right knee. A few holes later we ran into Tom and he noticed I was not playing. I told him I wasn't able to play and explain why. Randy, you're gonna want to get another starter. He was a a$$ hole to us and when we mentioned to other workers at the course they all knew it. This is a known problem. I get it's not easy to let people go but when the rest of your team knows of the issues, it's going to impact morale for everyone on your team and leave customers like me with a terrible first impression of your course. It's not cheap to play here so I'd expect exceptional and at the very least pleasant people we interact with. And DEFINITELY the starter. story: we showed up to play for my dads 70th birthday today and headed over to the first tee. We arrived to the starter glaring at us and said 'have you ever player here before?' Us 'nope'. Him 'that explains why you're late'. Us 'here's the time on my phone that says we're here at the exact time of our tee time'. Him 'that's not how tee times work here, you should be in the fairway now'. Uhhh ok. Why argue with us I. The first place and None of us have ever played a course with that rule. He was seeing stubborn on purpose. Then he lectures us and doesn't say anything about 'enjoy your round'. Ok. We then tell this to others on the course and as I mentioned they were all like 'oh yeah he's a 'bleep'. And that's your first interaction on the course? I'm sorry. We only have 70 players on the whole course today. I'm not sure why he's giving you any issues whatsoever. Especially when it's such a slow day'. We all played crappy our first few holes as we stewed over his terrible treatment of us. Not the way we should have ever been treated in general. Def not for the money you pay to play here. And def not for a birthday celebration. We played the whole round right behind the foursome in front of us. If we had been an issue, it's one thing. For the sake of future rounds. SilverRock was one of the finest golf courses in the Coachella Valley. Great track. Good customer service. Excellent practice facilities and an excellent teaching staff. Exquisite Arnold Palmer design. Unfortunately, the new real estate development required a rerouting of several holes. The redesign was botched. All four "new" holes have issues. In particular, the beautiful finishing hole has been replaced by a confusing short par 4, with an unusually unfair green. One of the worst designs for a finishing hole seen anywhere. Disappointing! The course is in great shape and was my favorite place I played all week and I played several of the pga west course. Awesome views, multiple Ram sightings... Even got close enough to one that I would have touched him. The course was well lasted out, not too hard from the shorter tees but could be a real bear from the back tees. I will definitely play here again next time I'm back. If you can, play with a local so you can get a discount. The local rate is more than half off of the out of town rate. read more

Awesome course, every hole different, water and sand, plus mountain goats. Really. Played it for first time. Spectacular scenery. The par 5s go back and forth over water, quite the test. I played it with a few people who have played it before, which helped. It's a serious course. Played from the combo blue-white tees at about 6250 yards. Very fair, you get to blast away with driver on most holes. The par 3s give you a chance for birdies and pars. You could walk it because fairly flat. Got it for $115 and I think it's worth the price. Greens are all sloped and nuanced. Though the slope was 127 seemed tougher. Though the carts have GPS it was cartpaths only. Fairways could use more yardage markings. read more

Average to poor golf outing for the following reasons. 1) Aggressive on-course marshal that hounded us even though we were right on top of the group in front of us. He found us guilty by association because we were part of a larger outing and told us to hit into the group ahead. When we finished the round (at 4 hours and 20 minutes) we complained at the pro shop, who did nothing other than say they would talk to the marshal. Meanwhile, our golfing experience was ruined. 2) Greens were in poor shape and we were told they were battling a fungus. We played in March, so heat was not the issue. 3) The place is a construction zone with a temporary pro shop, temporary parking lot, and offroading to get to the driving range. Overall, not likely to play here again for a while considering all of the other golfing options in the area. read more

We played Silver Rock today and the course was wet beyond belief. Very muddy and not scenic due to the construction. The starter said it will be another 3 years before all is finished. Funny their prices certainly don't reflect the condition of the course. read more

Came here for a 24 man tournament for the final round of 5. The course is good. The staff is TERRIBLE!! All they did all day was tell us to pick up the pace even though we were with the group in front and playing under the pace. The marshals would follow and watch us the entire time. Our tournament came down to the final match and we were all at the 18th green to watch and they yelled as us to get back to the clubhouse. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! If you want a fun course, it's great, but you'll have a terrible time due to the staff. Will NOT be coming back...EVER! read more

This public course is very well maintained and beautiful to golf at. There are lots of bunkers and some water so I appreciate the red tees' position especially on par 5 holes. The staff is all super nice and their restaurant has good food. It's one of the nicer public courses I've ever golfed at. The resident card is well worth the investment. The course is beautiful. The layout is challenging, but fun. The surrounding scenery is awesome. I enjoyed the golf. What I didn't enjoy were the rude, snotty employees. The Marshall bird-dogged us all day about slow play. We played the round in 4 hours 15 minutes. For a track like this, that' s moving along pretty well. His chief complaint is that there was a hole and a half opening in front of us. Well dumb ass, that's because your starter wouldn't let our group tee off until the group in front of us was on the green and putting. Do the math, that already creates a one-hole divide. Duh. So with that said, we were only 1/2 a hole behind, and still humming along. At any rate, the Marshall followed us all day like we were shoplifters in a mall and he was security. We had eight guys (two foursomes) and after the first group holed-out on 18, they were watching group two's approach shots. The jackass Marshall lost his mind and told the group to get the carts back to the cart barn because the staff was waiting for them. Earlier the starter had told us that the last group of the day was teeing off at 3pm. It was now slightly after 4 pm. As you can see, there was no need to rush the carts back, no one else was going to need them. Furthermore, we teed off at noon, so that means that 18 foursomes teed off after us. That's 36 more carts still out on the course behind us. Our two carts weren't desperately needed for anything. Skip forward, the second group finished and we all drove to our vehicles to offload. We had inadvertently parked near the restaurant, not the pro-shop. As we were unloading, two more employees, younger guys, came rushing up to us and began hollering at us to hurry and return the carts. They tried to intervene and stop us from off loading, but I think that since there was eight of us and two of them, they huffed and puffed but ultimately drove off mumbling stuff under their breath. The guys at the cart barn were okay, but the Starter, Marshall, and two "enforcers" were way out of line and in my reading of other people's YELP reviews, this is their normal behavior. Over 150 courses in the desert, don't necessarily need to put up with their crap, I can play elsewhere. read more

Course was in okay condition, some greens a little beat up. The reason for one star is because of the ridiculous course marshals . To start off we were told by the starter to let the group in front of us clear the green before starting. So we may have started behind pace due to this. We had a 3 some behind us as well which didn't help things. We were told to speed up our pace because of this, and the marshal would sit at the tee box watching us and following us down the hole to be sure we did. At first I understood but after being berated three times and told to skip a hole our entire group was having a bad time. Being rushed, followed, and watched by the marshals is not fun. We paid good money to play the course and they asked and expected us to skip a hole. Ridiculous. We asked to let the threesome pass us and he said that it wouldn't work and would "ruin the entire days schedule". His brilliant idea was to split our foursome into two groups. Wouldn't that just take longer? Absolutely ridiculous. The funniest part is that we finished our round in 4 hours, the cart guy asked how our round was and after telling him about the harassment we endured he started laughing saying you guys are ahead of pace. He said "I think I know which marshal it was". I've never felt less welcome at a business let alone a "quality" golf course. To top it off there was a lot of construction going on which was not very scenic. Out of all of the courses to choose from we were thoroughly dissatisfied with our choice to play with SilverRock. I would not recommend this course to anyone. read more

Silver Rock is an easy course; all you have to do is make sure to hit every fairway, dodge the bighorn sheep, clear the bunkers surrounding every green, and stick your lines on multi-tiered and fast greens. Fat chance. This used to be on the tour, but upon looking at the championship tees, and noticing how the wind can whip and swirl through, I can understand why the players decided it was just too difficult. I hit an unprecedented 13/18 BIR my first time through here (Bunkers in Regulation), and probably should have brought a beach chair and an umbrella. The next time through I got smart and clubbed down to take those bunkers out of play whenever possible. Silver Rock is beautifully maintained, moderately pricey, and most certainly a target golf course. Swallow your pride here and choose your shots. You're always within reach of water or bunkers, so if you're not hitting your distances, prepare to be hitting out of some tough surfaces. If you are having a crummy round, just take a look around you- look at the gorgeous mountains jutting up right next to you (bounce one off them if you hit a power draw), the lush green grass that is a sacrilege to mother earth, and realize you're playing something worth remembering. And with latest technology in GPS on your carts, you can pinpoint exactly where you want to throw your club when you duff it into the water. 4 Stars P.S. Golf in the desert does not get any better than this!!! I have played most of the top courses in the Coachella Valley (Tahquitz Resort, Escena, Shadow Ridge, Classic Club, Desert Willow, Indian Wells Resort Courses, PGA West) and this is probably one of the best. I think it's one of the best layouts and its never in bad shape. We normally go out at least once a year in the summertime when rates are cheap and the course is never that bad (unless it's punched). I know that they recently closed one of the 9's in order to build the resort, which is a shame because I'm sure it will take away from the charm of the course. I like the old desert style courses without houses all over the place. Do yourself a favor and play this course as well as the Norman course at PGA West if you're in the La Quinta area. read more
