Came by for a quick bread fix, and their scallion buns were perfect - not too oily while still be soft and pillowy. Cannot emphasize how many bakeries get that wrong, with a really dry or greasy texture, but the one here hit the spot. Parking is sufficient, as it's located in the same plaza as Valley Supermarket. My family ordered a Chinese sponge cake with crispy layers in the middle. I'm not sure how the name would be translated into English, but it consisted of a layer of crispy sheets sandwiched between two layers of cake. The crispy sheets were very thin and similar to phyllo dough. This cake was not overly sweet since the layer of cream was very thin. Not many Chinese bakeries seem to offer this kind of cake since it doesn't resemble a traditional birthday cake with frosting, but it is a good dessert for those who like the fluffiness of cake without the frosting. read more

I've been coming here for years. It used to be called Taipan bakery and had amazing cakes. But now they've changed names a few years ago and still have pretty good cakes. They are beautifully decorated, fluffy cakes, and the cream isn't super sweet like supermarket cakes. I come here specifically for the gai mei bao (my hubby's favorite). It's better here than at other places - it has a nice chewy consistency and the filling is perfectly sweet. When I was here last week, there were no gai mei bao's on the shelf and none on their cooling carts behind the counter. While I perused the shelf and picked up other breads (they have some new bread flavors - matcha with red bean, double sesame, and mango!), a fresh batch of warm gai mei baos came out of the kitchen! Yay! Of course with no time to cool down, they deflated by the time I go home with them but they were so good regardless. They sell a variety of Chinese breads (pork floss bread and bolo bao) as well as non-Asian style pastries (ie croissants). Chocolate croissants were my kids' favorite for a long time, but they always sold out when we would go. Their egg tarts are really good too - HK and Portuguese style are equally good. This is a favorite stop for us when we're in the SGV. I keep reading about how troublesome the lot can be, but I've never had an issue. I guess we've just been lucky. Keep in mind, it's really small, there's no place to sit, but the bread and pastries here are ... chef's kiss (note: replace dated slang). Yeah, I'm a white guy, but my wife grew up in HK. Our go-tos are the cocktail bun and those surprisingly splendid egg-white egg tarts. They used to have a smaller location on the other side of town, but it was too hard to find, and it didn't survive. Five stars for the radish cake (luo buo si bing). It doesn't sound like much but it is SO GOOD and the best I have ever had. FYI it's made with daikon, not the small red radish you may be used to. Best part is, it's vegetarian, stuffed with shitake mushrooms and has a nice flaky crust. The filling has a nice umami fragrant flavor, just trust me and try it!! The Portuguese egg tarts were delicious. Just the perfect combination of custard texture and sweetness. The crust was good too. My only complaint was with my pineapple bun. It was very good but was ruined when a long black hair was baked into the bottom of the bread. I would suggest that a hairnet should be worn. read more

Bread is good. Nice people. But you can't tell much from outside. But they are inexpensive.

This is not a very conspicuous bakery. It's a very small bakery tucked in a strip mall in Alhambra, and very small, like a hole in the wall. As far as I know, this bakery is not a chain. That said, it's across the street from one of my favorite Hong Kong cafes (U2), so I decided to give it a try. I walked across the street after eating brunch and looked at the bread. The bread is very similar to Kee Wah, except slightly bigger while also slightly more expensive. The difference isn't huge, maybe about 5 cents more expensive. I ended up getting the spam and egg bun there. Like Kee Wah, they don't use a ton of butter in their bread and so it tastes a little less greasy. Not a lot of places serve spam and egg buns, so I definitely like having this option. As stated, Simply Splendid doesn't use as much butter, and overall their flavors are blander compared to popular Taiwanese bakery chains like 85 degrees or Sunmerry. Bland isn't necessarily a bad thing though, and if you're into baked bread like me it's definitely worth a try. read more

This is my family's go-to bakery. We were patrons since Simply Splendid was Taipei Bakery. We ordered my sweet 16 cake, my parents' anniversary cake, my graduation cakes, other birthday cakes, and baby showers and "just because it's a potluck party" cakes. Everyone in my circle loves the crispy cake with minimal frosting and the not-so over-the-top sweet filling. I love their stamp system, where if you spend a certain amount, you get a free $10 voucher. Their pastries are fresh and so tasty. They have increased their pricing a bit, but the variety has also grown, so it makes sense. Their egg, seaweed, and sausage pastries are worth trying...along with all the other pastries. Whenever I happen to find myself in this shopping center, I like to stop into this cute little bakery. I always get the pork bun and a sweet bun that doesn't have any filling. I wish I knew the proper names of all the buns, but it's just nice to look at and be surprised by what's inside. The items are freshly baked each morning, and they also have a variety cakes and other little goodies to choose from. Simply Splendid is in my opinion the best Cantonese bakery chain in Southern California. I come here when I'm craving for traditional Cantonese style pastries and bread. They also have cakes but I haven't tried their cakes yet. I like their egg tarts, green onion bun, green onion and hot dog bun, tuna bun, spam and egg bun, pork sung bun, and taro bun. I have been here several times. They have the BEST bakery items in the 626. It is always fresh and they do not skimp on the fillings. HOWEVER, the service here is always hit or miss. Today I went and was helped by a woman in her early to mid 20s and she was extremely rude. She was very irritated at me when I asked if they had certain items and rolled her eyes when I asked for a box instead of a bag. This hasn't been the first time that she has been rude to me. It was a very unpleasant experience and I only keep coming because of the excellent bakery items. The other ladies are nice and helpful most times. Not sure why the overall reviews here are so low but I truly think this bakery does a fantastic job. Their breads are chewy and authentic. They have a wide variety of selection you can choose from. Best of all, their breads are very similar to the ones you can find in Hong Kong. I also love their egg tarts here. They're so big and flavorful. It's a solid local bakery. I cannot wait to try out their cakes. Parking is super easy here too. They are located in a plaza with free parking. Weekends can be a bit busy as there's a supermarket in the plaza but you'll be able to find a parking spot if you circle around a few more times. read more
