I really want to like Sip, but I am underwhelmed every time and feel like everything is overpriced for the quality/quantity. I came here on a Wednesday night and sat at the mostly-empty bar with a colleague. It was difficult to get the bartender's attention to order more drinks and an appetizer, and the ahi tuna tacos weren't good and tasted fishy. There are better wine bars in the area that are cheaper and have more attentive staff. read more

Drinks- I got a blood orange martini, good but not amazing. My husband got a grapefruit basil cocktail. We were both skeptical of the drink, but once it came out we were really suprised. It really was a great drink I definetely recommend. Neither of us are big fans of grapefruit or gin alone, but for some reason this drink worked. Food- Ahi Tuna poke small plate was tasty but again not amazing. The sweet potato fries were more like wedges, they were simple but really good. It was like eating a whole sweet potato that was cut up in 5-6 pieces. Caprese penne pasta was again simple but good. Lots of cheese, but other than that a light entree. Dessert- There was an apple tart that we got. I'm not the biggest fan of any apple dessert, but our waitress told us it was her favorite. We really loved apple dessert! Surprisingly easy to get a table for two here at 7pm on a Friday. It's a bit loud indoors, but the hostess was good natured about moving me outside. Service was surprisingly helpful and patient, even when faced with a smartass customer. Waitress was discreet and left the table alone when a kerfuffle bloomed. Wine was decent, but a little pricey (pay attention to taste, half glass and glass)--but the glass is a very generous glass indeed. There is a big column in the middle of the restaurant and it might have been the reason that it took a while for our server to even realize that we were there. Other than that, this place was cool and we had a good dinner. The bartender made a really good old fashioned...I liked it so much, I ordered another at Avery Bar across the street after our meal. I get that this is a wine bar but that doesn't mean that I have to have wine here. I am an American adult. I get to make my own decisions! The sushi was pretty good. The presentation of each dish is wonderful. The taste is even better. I highly recommend the ahi tuna flatbread ($15), and ask them to add truffle oil dressing. It is not spicy because it has a great balance of seaweed salad. The sashimi platter ($18), while a little pricey, comes out with 2-3 large pieces each of tuna, salmon, and yellow tail. I think the dish is worth it because the quality of fish is amazing. Lastly, I recommend the Blush cocktail. The tequila makes it a strong drink, but the citrus flavors stand out as well. read more

I loved this place! I can't say I know a lot about wine but I certainly enjoy drinking it. This is a great place to learn about your own wine preferences! You can try just a sip which is 2 oz or you can order 6 oz or 10 oz. I enjoyed many little "sips" of Chardonnay and a couple of reds. It was wonderful. The bartender was very well informed and was a great help when assisting me in finding a wine to suit my taste buds. We had a bit of a miscommunication after ordering food because she delayed putting in the order to wait for our friend but it was an honest mistake. I ordered sushi and it was wonderful. Overall I had a wonderful experience here and the atmosphere was very modern. It was a little pricey but I thought it was worth the experience. Went here to celebrate my friend's engagement - great space and decor, fun for a dressy night out with the girls! Drinks were solid - we tried several and everyone seemed pleased with their selections. Between all of us we tried the cucumber basil margarita, the red sangria, the grapefruit basil martini, the Sweeney Todd, one of the bellinis, and several wines. All got good reviews in our books. Desserts were good and the cheese plate was tasty as well. Our waitress was very sweet and polite but very forgetful. One of my friends ordered several "sips" of wine throughout the night. Of the 4 she ordered, our waitress forgot 3 of them. She'd come back to the table and ask if we needed anything and my friend would ask about her most-recently ordered sip, and she appeared to literally have NO recollection of her order. 5 stars for the delicious food and wine, 1 star for the service. Both the entrees we got were excellent - I highly recommend the miso salmon with lobster mashed potatoes, and the rare seared tuna loin with crab fried rice. Very creative dishes and a ton of great flavor. Our appetizers, kobe sliders and tuna sushi, were also excellent. The service here, however, was pathetic. We waited about 45 minutes just to get our appetizers. We asked the waiter three times about the status of our food during those 45 minutes, and it seemed like he was avoiding us. We eventually get our apps, the manager comes apologize to us for the long wait and only offers to get us ketchup and mustard for our kobe sliders because the waiter forgot to bring them. Food literally came out 5 minutes after we got our appetizers. The food was great, but the staff did a terrible job keeping us informed about the status of our food during a long wait. I would come back here for drinks, but never again for food. read more

This place could really be great if they would work on their service. The food and wine was really good, but our meal (salad and small plates, 2 sips of wine) took about 2 hours. We ordered 1 sip and waited. Our salad came and we waited (without our waiter coming by) to ask if we wanted more wine or water. Our small plates came and we grabbed the waiter to order another round of sips. He saw someone out on the sidewalk who he knew so we proceeded to have about a 5 minute conversation with her before going back inside to get our drinks. And then they came about 15 minutes later. The restaurant was not really busy and it seemed like they had plenty of wait staff, so I don't think being understaffed was the issue. I will happily come back and try it again in a couple of months - hopefully they will have trained their wait staff better and I will hopefully revise my rating upward. This neighborhood needs a really good restaurant like this - take it up a notch Sip! read more

It was a beautiful Saturday evening and we were walking through downtown Boston trying to decide where to grab a bite to eat. We stopped here and it proved to be a great choice. We were hungry and wanted to try several different dishes so we decided to share a flatbread and several small plates. We had Prosciutto Flatbread, Block Island Calamari & Skillet Roasted Mussels. Everything was delicious.! At one point I think we were fighting over the mussels. I also really enjoyed the calamari and the sirachi aioli. This review is ONLY regarding brunch. I've been here numerous times for dinner and absolutely loved it. Brunch was another story. Pricey, poor service (gave a 10% tip...I never give below 15 usually), wrong order delivered and waitress INSISTED it was correct (blueberry pancakes, not really that hard to notice they don't have blueberries involved). Lovely bar! Lots of wine selection, diverse menu, great atmosphere. I got the poke bowl which was HUGE, but it was so delicious that I powered through and finished the whole thing. I went here last night with a few friends and the entire experience was incredible! We split a number of the appetizers paired with wine: polenta fries (AMAZE), mushroom flatbread, meatballs and guacamole w/chips. For my entree I tried the scallops which were probably some of the best scallops I've ever had. The entree itself didn't look that big, but paired with the leek risotto it was definitely filling. Wasn't a huge fan of the nntz, nntz music that was playing when we first arrived, but they changed the music shortly after we got there and it was a much more welcoming atmosphere. Egregiously awful service. One star for food. My boyfriend was really excited to check out SIP. I was curious to see how it's change since Bina Osteria closed and SIP opened its doors. When we walked in, the hostess was kind and greeted us warmly. We decided to sit at the bar hoping to enjoy drinks and dinner. It took quite some time for the bartender to notice us--she was busy talking to a friend visiting at the bar. When she finally came over to take our order, she stopped us (I kid you not) in the middle of our order to help someone else. Another person ended up taking our order, but after we ordered appetizers took our menus away without asking whether we wanted to enjoy dinner. Finally, no one cared to ask how our food was. They were, however, excited to hand us our 10 minutes after we finished our sliders. I didn't think the experience could get any worse--but it did. After overhearing me tell my boyfriend how displeased I was with the service, the bartenders proceeded to talk with one another about 'how we shoulda just said something'. Well--talking sh*t, isn't going to fix it. Left pretty enraged. Went to PF Changs. Had a great experience there. Save your money, go elsewhere. read more

I had been wanting to check out Sip since it opened, and finally got there last week for a little girls night out. Great outdoor seating area perfect for people watching and enjoying the last few weeks of glorious weather. Menu is a little odd, as it mixes a bunch of different types of food without having a real theme. But it's great if you're with a friend who wants sushi while you're craving a quesadilla. The night I was there we split the margarita flatbread and the arinchini app. They were both delicious! The pizza was fresh and cheesy, and the app was flavorful. The wine list was good, probably not a hit for real wine snobs, as it didn't seem SUPER specialized, but it worked for my friends and I. Fun option to try small $2 "sips" if you want to taste a few things. I'd say the drinks were a bit pricey, but not shocking for downtown Boston. Our service was good, not amazing, but fine. I really enjoy this place! The food is pretty delicious (I've had the California Roll, Rockin Shrimp -- I might have the name wrong but it's fried shrimp with buffalo sauce, and Calamari), and I find the idea of getting sips of wine fun and exciting. I wasn't all that impressed by their cocktails though, which is why I went down a star. I'd stick with the wine/prosecco here. They have a fun inside as well as a nice outside patio area where you can sit on nice nights. They also don't rush you, which I enjoy. read more

A little secret: I've been to Sip several times now and I've yet to have a glass of wine there. Look, if there's a cocktail menu, I'm on it. I enjoy wine, but not when I go out. I can't help it! I'm usually going to Sip to meet girlfriends after work and that cocktail menu is just calling to me. On my last visit, I had the White Grape Martini. So. Good. Light and not too sweet. Doesn't compete for your taste buds while you're eating, but still tastes good! Since I'm typically there for "happy hour," my friends and I tend to get lots of apps to split. I've enjoyed everything I've tasted there: Tempura Green Beans, Edamame (hard to screw up), Hand Hacked Guacamole and sides of Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Lobster Mac & Cheese. My favorite app hands-down is the "Hot' Potato Chips. This is an order of potato chips (I'm hoping are handmade) served with a fondue of blue cheese with bacon crumbles. I could eat vats of the stuff. The wait staff has always been super friendly. I've gotten there before the rest of my party and they'll still seat me. Very attentive yet never rushing you. The atmosphere is what you might expect from a downtown wine bar- very clean and polished and low lighting. Lots of tables with outdoor seating in the summer. Tried a couple of cocktails, which were well made: tasty and not crazy strong or weak. We shared a seaweed salad (solid), dragon roll, seared ahi tuna, and spicy girl roll. The seared ahi tuna was on the sushi list, but was just tuna on some white stuff - not bad, but expected a sushi. The other two were tasty, but came on a thick sauce - almost like mayo. Randomly walked by Sip after work with a friend and decided to stop in for a drink and some apps. I was pleasantly surprised when we got our menus and saw that you can pretty much eat ANYTHING you want. A full sushi menu, salads, pasta, flatbreads, and a great selection of apps. It felt never ending. Of course at a place like this I worry that there's no way everything can be that great... We shared the blackened scallops served with a delicious sweet yet spicy sauce. We also had the buffalo chicken fondue. I know it's not easy to mess up buffalo chicken dip, but I was really impressed with the spiciness of this dish. It wasn't overly cheesy and had lots of pieces of chicken. Delicious! We each had a Smokin Hot Shandy to drink which was really good but a tiny bit too sweet. Interesting smoky and refreshing flavor though with the mezcal and beer mixed together. I also picked up dinner to go and had the caprese penne with kobe meatballs. It was so good! Went here with a friend to grab a bite for dinner on a Thursday night. There was a good amount of people but we were seated right away. This place can be sort of tapas style or more traditional, but we decided to do it more like tapas. For our dishes we went with the kobe sliders, the rock shrimp, the buffalo chicken flatbread, and the spicy tempura tuna roll. The kobe sliders were probably my least favorite part of the meal. Though the meat was seasoned well, I felt like they were a bit charred and left a bit of a burnt meat flavor in my mouth. The buffalo chicken flatbread was decent, but nothing to write home about. It did carry a good spice that wasn't overpowering so I give it that and was a good size as well. The spicy tuna roll was a great dish from this place. It had a nice texture to it and went really well with the sauces on the dish. Definitely recommend checking this dish out if you are into sushi. My favorite dish of the night (by far) was the tempura rock shrimp. Each piece was so light and flaky and cooked perfectly. The flavor imparted on the shrimp was so delicious and had just the right amount of spice to keep you going back for more. I could have eaten this dish all night probably (and it's a decent portion) because it is that good. Definitely a must order, even if you're not the biggest shrimp fan. We also ordered a couple of drinks each, my friend ordered a couple white grape martinis which I tried and wasn't the hugest fan of, but I prefer a little sweeter alcohol usually. I also had a moscow mule which was a bit limier than I like, but had good flavor. Overall, this place is a nice casual place to grab a bite or drink. Great atmosphere and perfect for anything from a date to a large group. Worth checking out if you are looking for a menu with some variety. read more

Also - I was supposed to meet a friend for drinks at Sip and it turned out that they were holding a private event. Love the concept of tasting various wines by choosing either a sip, half glass, or full glass. Very pricey though even if you do just get a sip or half glass, but it really is the best way to taste various wines. The only thing missing here is more variety in the wines. I saw mostly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, a few Chiantis (only spicy ones), and no Rieslings among other notable favorites. I enjoyed a deliciously fruity Gruner Veltliner, however, from the famed Wachau region in Austria. I couldn't comment on the food since I've only come here for wine tasting. read more

Okay - I can only review the drinks because I did not actually eat any of the food. However, I can say that it was aesthetically pleasing and smelled amazing. The wine list here is great, and pricey. It is nice because you can order a "sip" a half glass or a full pour. That way if you want to try the wine you can without committing to a $25 glass. The cocktails we ordered were a mix between great and interesting. Interesting in a not necessarily good way. When I return I will stick to the wine list. Excellent wine bar, although I have only gone mid-week. Music is relaxing, lighting is soft and calming. I love that they offer "sips" ranging between 2.95$-6.12$ which is about 1/3 a glass of wine. I like to be able to try new things, and this is perfect for me. At the bar during the week there are great bar specials, and delicious 5$ sliders served with ranch chips. My mom and I dined at Sip before the ballet and had a great time! Our server, Michael, was absolutely adorable, helpful, and so much fun. We started with the arancini, which were fab. Super cheesy and delicious. Then we shared the rice bowl and the mushroom flatbread. Everything was really delicious, fresh and interesting. I will say that I find it a teensy bit interesting that they market themselves as a wine bar, considering their wine list is sorta...meh.
