I spend a lot of nights sitting at home watching Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives fantasizing about all the places I could travel to try new foods. We have our two favorite BBQ spots in Austin but we loved the episode featuring the owners of Slab so we decided to give it a try. We ate there after a nearly 4-hour drive. Because it was only 3pm we waltzed right in, followed by a guy dragging his suitcase straight from the airport. Always a good sign that he just couldn't wait to eat there! For me it was OK. I wouldn't NOT go here but I wouldn't come back on my own. The place smelled musty, which was odd bc normally with BBQ you smell smoke. The staff was ALL extremely sweet and helpful I got the McDowell. The rib was good, sauce was good. Onions didn't add anything and mostly fell off. Pickles were "meh." U fortunately the bun was not up to the task of participating in a sandwich. I eventually just threw it away because it was so flimsy. My husband loved 2/3 sliders. He got full so didn't eat the pulled pork one. We deconstructed the pulled pork one. I found it dry and bland, my husband thought the pork was fabulous. He smokes his own meat and is more of a bbq connoisseur than myself so his 5 star rating of the pork should mean more. We both liked the mac n cheese. The sauces were all really good. read more

It was a Yelp event that originally got me here and it's another Yelp event that has brought me back. This place was having its 10th anniversary celebration and offered a $10 meal deal deal for yelpers. I got their famous PIG sandwich and some ribs and brisket to go. Just opening that brown paper allowed the heavy smoky aroma to permeate the surrounding air. The brisket was very tender and moist, and the ribs were meaty, yet fell off the bone. My family and I decided to get some BBQ for dinner. We parked and then went in to the restaurant. We walked along to the front where there was a large menu and you place your order. The person taking our order was really nice. She gave us a number and told us to sit wherever we wanted. We found seating easily and waited for our food. They are made up of tortilla chips, your choice of BBQ meat, queso, onions, pickles, jalapenos, and the Backyard Red Sauce. I chose brisket as my choice of BBQ. The Nachos were delicious. They had a combination of flavors. All of the ingredients are very tasty especially when combined. For my meal I ordered the O.G. which is a brisket sandwich (chopped or sliced) with pickles, onions, and the Backyard Red BBQ sauce. I chose the sliced brisket for my sandwich. The sandwich was good. Most of the brisket was tender but the exterior edges were kind of tough and crisp. I don't really like that but I was able to cut it off and eat the tender meat in my sandwich. The pickles and onions added a little extra flavor. The BBQ Red Sauce was good. It made the sandwich come together. I also ordered a side of potato salad which comes with red potatoes, onions, seasoning and mayonnaise. It was good. The potatoes were decent sized and the mayonnaise, onions, and seasoning gave it flavor. I also ordered a side of BBQ Baked Beans. The Beans were sweet and delicious. A few side notes. One of my teens ordered the ribs which came with a Strawberry Habanero Glaze on the side. He didn't eat the glaze so I tried it. It was really good. I tried it with my brisket sandwich and it made for a sweet and savory sandwich. My other teen ordered a side of Mac and Cheese. He didn't eat much of it and said that it had barely any flavor but it almost tasted smokey. When we were done eating we cleared our trays and left. Came to Slab BBQ (or as the sign above the door reads Stack City BBQ) for lunch and it was delicious. This place is conveniently located off I-183 and Burnet Rd with plenty of parking and seating inside. The O.G was fantastic; with plenty of meat and well seasoned. The pork ribs were not only perfectly cooked and seasoned but proportionately served as well. I had my sauce on the side. The service was quick and friendly. The place has a comfortable vibe. Ok SLAB, meat was falling off the bone tender! So moist ...I had the Texas O.G. which I am lol but I thought I was eating slow but I'm pretty sure I inhaled it because it was that good! Black angus brisket, pickles, a backyard red sauce (I'm not a sauce girl) but it was sauce'n, no onions, no bones just juicy meat on a nice toasted bun. Once you enter, there's a queue type line but we were the only ones so straight to the counter. Young man at the counter gave us recommendations (which was what I chose). They were quick too, obviously working on it as we ordered it. They bring it out to the table. Nothing was piping hot which is why I was able to inhale it. The smoked Gouda Mac n cheese was goodt too. Yelp said this was Black Owned business but there were none behind the counter but again, they were kind ppl! The music was good, hip hop and r&b. The restaurant wasn't busy at all. You order at the front, the staff provides a number, and bring the food to you. They're menu features an array of sandwiches and meats by the 1/2 pound or pound. My husband and I shared a 1/2 pound of brisket, 1/2 pound of ribs, and a small side of mustard cold slaw. The ribs were super moist and seasoned well. I wasn't a fan of the brisket, but it tasted better with their array of bbq sauces. The mustard cold slaw has some tang, but great to try. Service was very quick and attentive. I've tried this place twice, with consistent results. Dry, overcooked bbq. First trip: brisket and sausage sandwich. Sausage was actually fine, but the brisket was very dry. Second trip: grabbed smoked chicken breast and pulled pork. The pulled pork was incredibly dry, and shredded into tiny pieces. I went there not long after opening, so it's pretty clear I got yesterday's leftover, reheated pork. Either way, it was like wood chips. The chicken was very rubbery, and also lacked moisture. Honestly, this place may be worse than Dickey's. No need to go back. Next time I'll just drive the extra distance to Stiles Switch. read more

I had not been to this place in years, and after this visit I found out why I hadn't been back. Things didn't start out great when I asked if they had combo plates, i.e. 2-meat plate, 3-meat plate, etc. The girl behind the cash register sheepishly said they did sell the meat by the pound. While that's ok, I like to order a plate and let the restaurant determine how much meat that is and serve it. But it wasn't to be. I have a feeling restaurants do this so you have to order everything a la carte. And that's what I had to do: some meats and 2 sides, individually charged for each. So I got some moist brisket, sausage, BBQ baked beans, and what they called twice-baked potato casserole. The brisket had great potential. It was juicy and had a great char. But that's where anything good ended. It was horribly bland, and if it weren't for the sauce there would have been no taste whatsoever. It looked great, but the taste didn't match the visual appeal at all. The sausage? Meh. There was nothing great about it, but there also was no reason to hate it. Just average. Again, the sauce helped. I did notice that the menu was dominated by sandwiches. There were no fewer than a dozen different sandwiches. Almost every meat was included. Maybe that should have told me I had no business ordering plain meat. But if there isn't a good base of meat, what would the sandwiches be like? The sides. The beans were really good. I could tell they were probably made the day before, which allowed time for the flavors to meld. I have no problem if that was the case. I was curious, though, because their menu said fried onions were mixed in. I found none. Maybe if the beans really were from the day before the onions had just disintegrated into the beans. But I still wanted that crunch. It could have used it. The potatoes....? No. Again, they were labeled as a twice-baked potato casserole. No way. These were just some mashed potatoes. And they weren't good at all. Again, a huge lack of salt. Pepper, too. No seasoning at all. They were just a glob of starch. I could not believe a BBQ place in Austin did not make their own sweet tea! They had a tank of unsweetened tea, but for sweet tea you had to get it from the soda fountain. Yuck. I got Coke. As for the restaurant itself, it's ok. Seating is plentiful. The dining area was a little dark, stemming from the fact that the location is on the interior of a strip center, with the only natural light coming from the front of the restaurant. The music was a curious choice. Rap music that was incongruous with the food being served. I attributed that to the summer hires who were probably high school students. I wanted this place to be good. I need more restaurants in my rotation. Unfortunately this one won't be a part of that. This was my experience on one day, so maybe if I went on a different day at a different time it would (could?) have been different. read more

I don't often eat BBQ (the LINES) but when I do, I have very discerning standards. First plus - catering, yay! Slab delivered to my church (hence no photos) and I got the tail-end while it was cold and it was still DELICIOUS. Most importantly, the brisket was delightfully moist, with a crispy smoked crust that knocked my socks off. BBQ sauce is just right - tangy, smoky, a touch of sweet to balance. Don't tell my mom, but the baked beans could be better than homemade. I may have gone back for thirds. Sadly, no mac 'n cheese or smoked sausage, so there's an in-house visit in my future.
