My friend rented out the bar area for their birthday on a Saturday night in December from 7-10pm. We had a minimum to reach and we reached it before we started paying for our drinks and meals. I got there a little late so I didn't order food but I had some spring rolls and I heard the shaking beef was good. We all really enjoyed their Vietnamese coffee espresso martinis and others also enjoyed their mezcal mixed drinks. We got tons of shots of tequila and they have a cake cutting fee if you bring your own cake. Parking is easy because they have their own parking lot. They have somewhat of an outdoor bar area but it was closed since it was raining. Service was great, very friendly workers that were working hard for our large party. Literally stumbled in here after leaving Bottle Rock. It was in walking distance from my hotel so super easy to get to. Plus during Bottle Rock when the hotel bar closed, they remained open which was nice. Upon walking in, we were greeted right away with a friendly smile. That means a lot because I know they were probably busy all day with all the tourist that were in town for the Bottle Rock event. The next notable thing is the music they were playing. 90's R&B. Totally wasn't expecting that, but it was a great treat. The drink menu was very creative and when I asked what they like to make I was told an Old Fashion. I am not typically a big old fashion kind of girl, but I had to try it and it was very very good. So couple the amazing drink, with the good vibe and throw in the 90's music. I was in heaven! At the last minute we decided to order food, which was very good as well. The wings 10/10. Looking forward to going back to Napa already next year and this will be my first stop. read more

I gotta be honest. I had high hopes for this place, but was disappointed. I believe that the dishes they made were incredibly hard to make. However, I feel like the flavors were off. A lot of the dishes were very sweet. I realize that sugar, salt, and fat are staples of gourmet cooking, but it was very over-powering to the flavors. Also, when our cocktails took a little long to arrive (something that we never complained about, but that the server felt guilting about on their own), they poured us a complimentary wine -- a nice gesture, but I gotta drive and don't really want an extra drink. Also, they were really eager to get us to buy more food than we needed. We ordered about half of what they recommended, and we still had to box up some of it. That didn't stop the server from trying to get us to order more dishes, to which we had to keep pushing back against. Lastly, there were a couple dishes that we had to order twice. It seems like the server didn't keep track of our original order, and so they came around to ask if we wanted mains when we had already ordered some. Not a huge problem but just another slight against them. All in all, not the kind of elevated dining experience that we had come to expect from such a reputable place. read more

My wife and I decided to try the Slanted Door for a Friday Happy Hour. We arrived around 4:30pm and we were the only customers in the restaurant. We ordered 4 Happy Hour food items and one happy hour cocktail. The bartender and staff were very friendly and engaging. Our food arrived as well as the cocktail. The food was good as was the cocktail. Our check came and I saw a service charge of 20% added on. This made our Happy Hour tab 78.00 for two people and one drink. I would gladly pay the check fee and I almost always tip 20-30% if the food is good and the wait staff as well. I just don't know why there would be a 20% service fee for 2 people, during happy hour. I would have given this restaurant a 5, but couldn't because they charge an automatic service fee of 20% on your bill. No questions asked & no option for the customer to tip as they see fit based on the service and food. It's wrong to have a manditory charge on your bill versus allowing the customer to decide. That said, the service very good. We sat in the courtyard and enjoyed a nice out door meal of various appitizers. I loved the Crispy Imperial Rolls. I definitely recommend them. The yellowtail was fresh, but did not have much flavor, also very overpriced, $21 for 4 pieces. of fish. The cold coffee drink was also great. I was very excited to try Slanted Door as many people had recommended it to me. It's in a bit of a random location (Google maps will tell you to turn down the wrong street! It shares a parking lot with river terrace inn). But the inside of the building is beautiful. They have large glass windows that look into a courtyard that I bet will be lovely in the summer. We ordered drinks and apps to start. The drinks were absolutely delicious. The apps were a little hit or miss. The banh nam was described as a banana leaf wrapped dumpling but it was just served on a banana leaf. We also ordered wings which were quite good but a little salty. A great touch was they're served with a few wet towels to clean up. Next we had the Gau Choy Gau which were pan fried dumplings - this was my favorite. We finished off with the mango panna cotta. It was just okay. I will normally finish off any dessert on the table and we left about half of it there. All in all, I'm glad I tried it but the meal was a little disappointing perhaps due to how much it was hyped up. The service was lovely! I hosted a business dinner for six at the Slanted Door in Napa and had an outstanding experience. I requested a quiet location in the restaurant so we could discuss business, and the staff generously accommodated us with a room that perfectly responded to my request.   Our server was friendly and knowledgeable--noting the history and style of the restaurant, the seasonal menu changes, locally sourced ingredients, and made suggestions based on our questions. The Slanted Door recommended ordering family style so we could experience as many dishes as possible, and we took them up on their suggestion. The service in general was unobtrusive and highly professional--changing plates, adding flatware, and refreshing drinks without disturbing conversation.   The food was exceptional. No dish was under seasoned. Every dish was cooked perfectly and seasoned to the point where each ingredient and the overall dishes' umami flavors were maximized.  When hosting a meal, I was taught to order enough so that no one leaves the table hungry so we did order many dishes. Here are my notes.   For appetizers, we ordered the Yellowtail, Spring Rolls, Banh Bot Loc dumplings, and BBQ Ribs. The BBQ ribs were the star of the first course. Perfectly cooked so the meat was tender and separated from the bone cleanly and glazed with an addictive savory-sweet sauce, these ribs were unforgettable. However, every appetizer was good.   For the main course, we ordered the Shaking Beef, Salmon, Lemongrass Pork Chop, Pork Belly Claypot, Eggplant, and Cellophane Noodles. Each was excellent, but the Pork Chop was the best pork dish I have had in years. It was flavorful and melt-in-your mouth tender.   For dessert, we ordered the Olive Oil Cake, Pavlova, Che Bap (which is rice pudding). The Pavlova was the standout. The fruit and meringue were sweet and crisp.   There are many choices in Napa, but I would not hesitate to recommend the Slanted Door. read more

We recently checked out Slanted Door, an upscale Vietnamese restaurant in Napa. We weren't sure what to expect but were pleasantly surprised by the quality and taste of the food. We ordered the slanted door spring rolls (pork and shrimp) and pork bao buns for our appetizer, and for the mains we shared the pork chop vermicelli salad bowl and the cellophane noodles (crab). For dessert we shared a pear tart, and ordered espresso, Vietnamese espresso martini, and imperial pu-ehr tea. I also ordered a cappelletti spritz and an off menu mezcal sour for additional drinks. The food was really tasty but smaller portions compared to your usual local Vietnamese spot. I definitely felt full after, but we did not have any leftovers and wouldn't have felt full if we didn't order appetizers. The service was great and the staff was very friendly with pretty normal/fast service. They also have a pretty decent sized parking lot behind the restaurant so it was very easy finding parking. Overall, a great spot to check out for a date night if you want to splurge a bit, but if you are looking for cheaper traditional Vietnamese food with larger portions, this is not the spot for you. read more

I used to come to ferry 1 building to have dinner with satisfaction. In Napa location which turned out very bad and disappointed with the same menu I used to order in SF. 1) Cha gio were bad, unable to compare others regular VN restaurants 2) cellophane noodles - too much oil and salty with Dungeness crabs tasted unfresheableness like from can...complained about salty to the waitress. The owner should train the cooker to improve, else it would not be able to survive. Never comeback. Not worth it read more

The shaken beef was supposed to be very good but it was salty and not even as good as a casual Vietnamese restaurant elsewhere in the Bay. The ingredients might be of higher quality but the flavor didn't win us over. It took the staff 10-15 mins to greet us and show us the menu. After our first entree, they asked to pack the leftover without realizing we still had other dishes coming. That was a little odd. It turned out they forgot our dish. The crispy imperial rolls were decent, but the accompanying salad was wilted and dark, like it had sat out too long. The crab cellophane noodles were too salty, though still eatable. The pork belly clay pot was a real letdown: inedibly salty with overcooked eggs that were supposed to be soft-boiled. Eggplant were good, but similar to any basic takeout... Food was disappointing, service, on point. Wine selection was also surprisingly limited considering where the restaurant is located. We went as a group and they only allowed us to go with fixed price menu. The term was also a misnomer because they were served "family style" aka shared plates. If this was the case, then we could have simply ordered them a la carte? I'm still baffled by the logic. Everything was over seasoned--I felt I probably gulped down a bottle of soy sauce (and don't get me wrong I love and understand the importance of salt in cooking). Spring rolls were fresh, but they weren't special. Wrapper was too tough/thick as well. Shaking beef was cooked well, but they don't taste authentically "shaken"--the watercress essential to the dish was barely identifiable. Chicken claypot was, hands down, the worst claypot I've had in my life. The real problem was the meat. We were served with only skins but where's the chicken?? We couldn't even get through half of it. There's also banh nam--banana leaf rice dumpling steamed with minced meat and shrimp on top. The ratio of water to rice flour was unacceptably off. We couldn't even pick it up with chopsticks. The flavor may be there but the texture was too odd to encourage trying. It was also saturated in fat. Papaya salad was probably the only reasonable balance that kept us sane. Long beans were swimming in sodium. Cellophane noodles were fine, but there was an interesting spice added. (I liked it a lot, but some members held varying views.) Service was amazing despite food being mediocre. Perhaps it would have been better if they just let us order from the menu instead of setting us up for the fixed price menu that left them no excuse for why they screwed up knowing what to prep in advance? read more

Very good dining experience. Delicious food and nice ambiance. We had a great waiter, Deon was terrific! He was friendly but not overly so. He had good knowledge of the food and was just the right amount of attentive. The Scallop Tartare was sublime. Unique and tasty. The rest of the meal was very good. The ribs were big and flavorful. The pork chop was mouthwatering, although honestly could have been cooked a little more. Some parts were very rare. And the cellophane noodle were perfectly savory. However I did find the noodles hard to eat, they are slippery devils The place has a romantic vibe, with a fire place and tasteful art in subdued light. I'd go 5 stars except I did feel the pork chop was undercooked. But I'd give it an 1/2 star if I could. read more

Great beef pho!! Generous amount and great broth. I really enjoyed. Great price compared to quality

They call themselves a Vietnamese restaurant. The only thing Vietnamese about it are the spring rolls with pasty peanut butter-like sauce, that was tasty. We saw the pho soup on their page, but the waitress gave us a story about how the owner "wanted to keep it traditional from his childhood by serving pho soup on saturdays only." She proceeded to say they serve pho on Saturday's BRUNCH TIME only. What the pho kind of excuse is that? What a gimmick. I have never heard of that "tradition" from any of my Vietnamese family members & friends who grew up in various parts of Vietnam. They all said that "tradition" doesn't exist and they serve and pho 24/7. I asked Vietnamese restaurant owners from all over about that and they all said that that's not a tradition. There was only 1 or 2 other parties there. The waitress filled up our water just once, rarely came out to check on us, water cup empty for a long time. She lever came to fill it up again. To make things worse, they tack on a 20% gratuity tip on everyone's bill whether you're eating by yourself or party of 20. They send you the same check (with the already 20% mandatory gratuity tip) with ANOTHER tip line, in hopes you'll tip twice. The worker said the tip is for the employees (duh). But why not be transparent from the very start (about the automatic 20% tip) of us getting there and why not put that on the food menu when we are ordering? They're really big on their wine menu. And other foods that are not Vietnamese fusion at all. Like I said earlier, the only thing Vietnamese about it was the super overly priced spring roll that they put on their fancy looking plates to make it look extra fancy & "upscale" when it's actually not. Just tastes like any other spring rolls except slanted door's pricing is 300% marked up. They sat us (party of 2) in the back corner right by the kitchen (to left of us). Lots of ants crawling on the blue or gray wall, no ants on the table. But still what's up with their ant problem inside the restaurant? I would not recommend this restaurant. I would give this place negative 10 stars if I could. read more

Slanted Door Napa debuted November 7, with the familiar modern sentiments that is absolutely pleasing and inviting. There are plenty of outdoor space in the inner courtyard area in between the restaurant and the kitchen. I love it! The arching light details over the bar and the high ceiling in dramatic darker color interior, the Vietnamese dishes and cocktails, our first visit to the Napa location is absolutely a treat. My favorite dish from the Ferry Building location is still the it dish: imperial roll. Other highlights include the shaking beef and the chicken clay pot. read more

Been a couple times when they were in a primo spot in the SF Ferry Building and suitably impressed, I was excited to see what's up in Napa. The space is very tasteful and restful. Interesting and yummy concoction seemed to employ a grapefruit marmalade as the sweet stuff. Totally cool. Beverage manager is on the job. Wine list is eclectic, old-world, new-world and tight. Intriguing. For eats we asked for the spring roll, hamachi crudo with the crab cellophane noodles to follow. Crudo was exquisite. Slightly oily, fragrant of the sea with crisped shallot to add a sweet note. Spring rolls very fresh with thin sliced pork, poached shrimp, vermicelli noodle, mint, aioli and a peanut sauce. Very refreshing, slightly chewy and generous. Cellophane noodles with crab was surprising in how much flavor could be packed into so few elements. Satisfying on so many levels. Fragrance, texture, depth, the crab sweet and again, slight hint of the sea. Restrooms very stylish and clean. Subtly but thoroughly lighted. A completely private w/c at disposal. The restaurant opened at 11:30am am on Sunday for brunch, and the first thing they mentioned was they ran out of "Five Spice Chicken", "Pork", and "Cellophane Noodles". WTF! Why bother opening! They should have at least put that on the door, so that we could have gone elsewhere. Never coming back again! We ended up ordering food we didn't want. The "Pho Bo" was very salty. Super cute place for lunch! I saw the menu online and thought I knew what I wanted but to my surprise the menu was different in person - might want to update that. Nonetheless, this place is gorgeous to sit outside for a meal! The menu provided a good amount of options which was great. I tried all of my family's plates and they all had great flavor. I had spring rolls and Vietnamese shrimp/pork tapioca dumplings. These were quite tasty. Nothing was too oily which is always what I look for. Slanted Door was iconic during its 15-year SF Ferry Building era. It was also iconic prior, eons ago in the Mission district. Signature items like the ginger lime cocktail, shaking beef, crab and cellophane noodles were just perfect. We were disappointed when they closed for good in SF, but super excited and hopeful to visit their new location in Napa during our recent trip. First thing to note is the building location which is super easy to miss, in a very nondescript building with signage that cannot be seen--even your uber/lyft may have trouble finding it (it's next door to the Westin Verasa). We expected to find a packed house after 5pm, but to our amazement there were only a handful of people in the huge venue that has a generous bar area, courtyard, and inside dining. Chef Dong was talking with bartender Zach and we managed to introduce ourselves to them and how we were fans of the SF spot. We ordered the famous ginger limeade and Chef surprised us with an amuse (daikon rice cakes). Such warm, personable staff here. Zach was also very polite and professional, which elevated the overall service. The crispy imperial rolls were just as good as we remembered, as were the fresh shrimp/pork spring rolls. Another thing that did not change was the pricing--be ready to fork over some $$. Meals are pricy, but you're also buying the experience that covers all 5 senses : ) read more

We live in Napa and wanted to stop at the bar for a bite. Upon our arrival, we were detained by security in the parking lot due to BottleRock. Long story, security let us in to eat at the bar. Once inside, the restaurant was empty. We found a seat at the bar and were provided with the happy hour menu. As we viewed the happy hour menu, a rude lady who worked there, and I assume was the manager, came by and said "happy hour is over", as she kept walking. I looked at my watch and it was 5:04 (happy hour ended at 5:00). Taking in to account the time we were detained in the parking lot and the time it took us to take a look at the menu, pushed us a few minutes past happy hour. Due to her attitude, we left without trying anything. I did notice they had a restroom designed as coed and one bathroom, specific for men. I found that really weird... The bartender seemed he would've been fine serving from the happy hour menu. The female manager (assuming) was super cold and rude. Good luck with your new location. Went here for a birthday and had a great experience. I am gluten-free and dairy-free, so it's always a struggle to find menu items that aren't just a plain protein with vegetables. I was actually able to have dumplings for the first time in years (made with glutinous rice flour) and the two entrees we had were both delicious. The chicken clay pot and the salmon were both good sized portions and we couldn't finish them between the two of us. Service was great and very quick. Drinks were filled promptly, and used plates were taken away quickly. The space was unique and the interior was considered and intimate. Highly recommended. read more

I also need to say we went there for happy hour and dinner after an orchestra concert (Sunday) and we had a lovely visit. I want to start off by saying the customer service is top notch and the staff are very friendly. I am giving this place 3 stars because the limited options they had (no rice entrees) and 2. The beef pho had absolutely no flavor and the noodles tasted soggy. I replaced the pho with the wings and it was a little better.
