Having dined at the Slanted Door in SF, I was very excited to find out that they are opening a new location in Napa CA. The location could be a bit hard to find and GPS told me to make a U turn on the right. I didn't see a parking lot so I just made a left turn and a left again into their huge parking lot. It was pitch black when we arrived and couldn't see any signages on the building (other than the small clear Slanted Door sticker on the glass). We assumed the dark gray building was it and it was! We entered and was greeted right away and seated in a small 2 person table in the corner. I came here for an early birthday celebration and was excited to try many dishes. We ordered the crispy vegetarian imperial rolls, bbq pork spare ribs, chicken clay pot, shaking beef, bok choy. The vegetarian imperial rolls was a good starter. It comes with four mini rolls, lettuce for wrap and a side of vermicelli noodles. To eat: take a lettuce and wrap the noodles, imperial roll and add some sauce and roll the whole thing up! We were not going to order the bbq pork ribs but our server was raving about how good they were and he was right! Usually ribs are fatty or not much meat but not these ribs! A pile of 6 ribs, tons of juicy meat slathered in bbq sauce, it was great. Hand wipes provided. Next up was the chicken clay pot. This dish was definitely missing something. It was just chicken (with skin). Although the flavor was good, I would recommend adding a veggie in the pot such as mushrooms. I would also recommend no skin for easier eating! Shaking beef ($54!) is pricey but a must get item here! The meat is grass fed tenderloin and comes with watercress, red onion and lime. Delicious, moist and cooked just right. The Bok Choy was a let down. The bok choy was all chop up and you only get a plate of stems. The leaves were all chopped off. I would recommend keeping the bok choy in tact and stir frying it. Not only do you get better presentation but you get the full bok choy (the leaves!) For dessert, we ordered the poached pear. It was served warm in a sweet syrup with pear, snow fungus, Chinese dates and ginger. Overall, a good place to have dinner. They are new and still working out their kinks. The servers and wait staff asked for feedback which I gave them and they said they are still new and could change things up. I would also recommend having at least 1 type of pho on the menu!! It was my mother in law's first time in Napa and we ended our day with a lovely dinner at Slanted Door. First off, the space is beautiful. Modern, industrial, and chic but still warm and inviting. We started off with cocktails which were all delightful, even the ones not on the menu. Our server Deon was wonderful, attentive and gave really great food/wine recommendations. The yellowtail, scallop tartare, and white Pekin duck with duck fat fried rice were standout dishes. I still think about that fried rice, it was so good. The service was really excellent and made our experience so enjoyable. Can't wait to come back here the next time I'm in Napa. read more

I've been wanting to try one of Charles Phan's restaurants and finally got a chance to visit the Slanted Door in Napa. The ambience was absolutely amazing. I loved the exquisite architecture and design of the restaurant. Dining in the thoughtfully designed courtyard was such a treat. It felt like a hybrid between a museum and a well-curated garden. Our large party had dinner reservations for an early dinner, so it warm and pleasant sitting in the courtyard. The service was phenomenal from beginning to end. I really enjoyed their interpretation of upscale Vietnamese food. Everything was well-executed, they infused some creative twists into classic dishes while maintaining the staple Vietnamese flavors. We got a good mix of some cold and hot starters as well as a combination large plates. I loved the softshell crab (the green mango mixed well w the crispy wild blue crab). The bbq pork was pretty decent. The cellophane noodles probably had the best flavor profile IMO. The glass noodles had the perfect level of saturation and saltiness from the crab "juices" (combination of dungeness and blue crab). read more

On Saturday. I made a reservation on open table for two. I called to ask if I could add another person and to see if they had availability. This was around noon and I had 745pm reservation. They have voice concierge Jasmine, Jasmine confirmed I could change it to three offered three different times and transferred me to the host. I got VM. I let them know what Jasmine said left my number ask them to call or text. At 4 I had heard nothing I message them through open table. At 7 pm I found an email they cancelled my reservation at 5pm with no explanation. I would have kept the two, or if Jasmine had said no changes that would have been fine too but I didn't ask for the reservation to be cancelled. read more

Hands down one of the best dinner experiences I had in Napa! Excellent sitting outdoor and a beautiful bar with the best Vietnamese food/fusion! We had Jasmine for our table and she was amazing and made us feel special! We tried the seasonal salmon and corn with spring rolls and a bottle of Frank Winery Chardonnay, which was fantastic! Overall a great addition to the Napa food scene! Love that they are here and hope they stay. A bit off the beaten path in that it's more than a walk from downtown, but ample parking or a very short Uber if you're staying in town. Atmosphere is hittin a solid vibe. High end feel but lovely and very far from stuffy. Kind of a cosmopolitan swank to it. Service was excellent! Super friendly, professional, accommodating, and attentive. What more could you ask for? Professionally decanted an aged bottle of Pinot. Frequent unobtrusive check-ins. Open to adjusting portion size for shared courses to accommodate the number of guests in our party, and offered excellent advice on volume of food ordered. Food was delicious, entertaining, and well presented. We enjoyed the following appetizers: scallop sashimi/ crudo which were scallop perfection. So silky and sweet. Perfect fresh spring rolls with nice fresh snappy shrimp and fresh herbs and a not overly sweet dipping sauce. The deep fried crispy spring rolls ( Imperial Rolls) were also tasty and not oily. And the BBQ spare ribs were perfect blend of savory and sweet and tender without being mushy. Entrees were equally exceptional having enjoyed the shaking beef, the chicken clay pot, and the lamb chops which were, in my opinion, the best part of the otherwise amazing meal. We had a side of the green beans which were perfectly cooked and nicely seasoned. Dessert was also perfectly executed poached pear with white fungus soup and crème brûlée. So why only 4* you ask? Yeh. All the above comes at a pretty steep price. Is it worth the price? That's where you have to decide. You're not going to find any Asian inspired food in Napa that compares (except maybe Kenzo, but that's a totally different vibe). Certainly not at either of Morimoto's terrible restaurants. Those places are train wrecks. So if you're jonesing for some devious food with an Asian kick while you're in Napa, I highly recommend. read more

Beautiful dining room. Second server was attentive. Food was a total bummer- cold, rushed, and gummy. Food came way before drinks-dumplings that were under cooked, flavorless and separated immediately- and not because they were stuffed- poor execution. Cellophane noodles with crab- again barely warm, gluey and 2 pieces of crab. Clay pot and radish cakes were better. Other items - not memorable. Sauces taste bottled, flat. SO many other options in Napa- this was so disappointing. And, auto 20% gratuity no matter the party size. My sister called to reserve a table for a party of 12. A night before the reservation my sister emailed Sierra and reached out to them about the menu to make sure they can accommodate the size of our party and they assured us that they can. When we got there the place was nice. The people were nice, I felt so confident that we made the right choice. We were presented with two menus 1 is for a family meal (recommended for big party) and the 2nd menu is a regular dinner menu. Our server was Charlie. We told Charlie that we will go with the regular menu and everyone is ready to order per plate and that is where the experience change from amazing to beyond disappointment. If I didn't have a guest with me I would have left. Charlie said due to the size of our party we are only allowed to order 3-4 main dish and Charlie will do us a favor by allowing us to order 1 more main dish because of the size of our party they cant accommodate our order with the size of there kitchen. First, if you cant handle our order why take our reservation with a big party? Why have so many tables when your kitchen cant handle it? How do you expect us to eat 5 main dish to be shared with 12 people? I was so embarrassed that we chose to not eat first and let our guest eat first and we will take whatever is left. I need to make sure that my guest and 12 years old niece can eat first before the rest of us can. How embarrassing is it that I have to take my guest and offer fast food after we dine at your restaurant because we did not have enough food available. The portions based on their recommendation were not good for sharing at all As beautiful as your location is the service was completely horrible. If you are looking to experience enjoyable dinner and great food for a large party, I will not recommend this place not unless you plan on going to a fast food to finished the night. If you plan on bringing your family to dine here or if you have a guest with a party more than 4 people. Be aware this will not be the place where you can enjoy good meal and great food. Food didn't match the price point and service was disappointing. The papaya salad tasted like soap, and most dishes were just okay--the vegetarian egg rolls were the only standout. Our drink arrived late, was said to be non-alcoholic, then later confirmed alcoholic after we'd finished eating. No apology or offer to fix it. They kept the drink on the bill. Only after pleading our case to have it removed did they remove it. With automatic 20% gratuity the goal for a waitress is to rack up the bill any way they can. Although I had some issues with the food and service the primary complaint was with the drink I ordered. I ordered a gin martini with a twist, something in order often when I'm dining out. The drink arrives in a small cordial glass that's not even three quarters full. The waitress asks if I like the cocktail. I reply that it tastes fine but it's extremely small. She replies that the pour for this drink is between 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 ounces. That's less than a shot glass. At $20 I find it extremely insulting. I've ordered my share of martinis at restaurants and this is absolutely by far the most pathetic pour. I left feeling like I had been ripped off. read more

We made a reservation for a party of 12 and were recommended the family-style menu, which only offered 3 starters, 3 main entrées , 1 jasmine rice 1 side and dessert and $80 per person. I expressed that we wanted a wider selection to cater to everyone's tastes, and the restaurant agreed to accommodate us. Sierra was kind enough to rebook our reservation due to travel delays, and we were grateful for her understanding. When we arrived, the experience quickly soured. After receiving a glass of wine with cork remnants floating in the glass (which I let go, understanding mistakes happen), our server Charlie informed us that, due to the size of our party, we were limited to ordering only 3-4 main entrées. This was in complete contradiction to the arrangement we had made. Despite our disappointment, we didn't want to cause any stress for our guests and reluctantly agreed. Charlie even mentioned that as a "favor," she would allow us to add one more entrée, bringing the total to 5. We assumed these would be generous, family-style portions, but what arrived were small, individual à la carte servings, completely insufficient for a group of 12. Even with 5 entrées, the portions were nowhere near enough to feed everyone. It was baffling and frankly embarrassing. To call it a family-style meal and then serve portions fit for individuals left us feeling misled and, worst of all, still hungry. What could have been a lovely evening with our guests ended in frustration and disappointment. read more

A bit surprised by the number of negative views so having eaten here many times over the last year I felt obligated to submit a review. First off easy free parking behind the restaurant. There is exterior court yard dinning is great in the spring/summer and well behaved dogs are welcome in that area. The bar is large and almost always available for seating if you choose to eat there. Of course full menu across the bar. The also recently added a wall of specialized whiskey's, mezcal, and other liquors if that's your thing. You can just walk up and take your pick. The have some specialty cocktails that I have occasional had, love the expresso martini and the dirty martini. The easy part of this review is the food. It is absolutely fabulous! Rib appetizers are a meal so be careful with those. I recently had some of the best salmon of my life there, mostly because of the unique preparation. Lamb chops, pork chops, and shaking beef are all excellent. Portions are large and go family style here. With 4 people 3 main entrees are sufficient even with some take home left overs. So if you consider this the pricing here is more than fair. The deserts are excellent as well. Yes they add 20% on the bill automatically for the servers, I usually tip at least this so I don't care. Also, I have never had a real issue with service, always great. Corkage for the first bottle is $35, while high it is sadly becoming the norm now at many places in Napa. I generally eat in the fireplace room which seems to be quieter. Bottom line I feel this place is a great addition to the Napa dining scene with hands down some of the best if not the best food in the valley. Have and will definitely return. read more

We were sad to hear about the passing of Chef Charles Phan. We loved the first original slanted door on Valencia Street. I was happy to find their location in Napa & wanted to give it a try & we were not disappointed. Started with papaya salad, it was light & refreshing, but it could use a little acidity, over very enjoyable. The second starter was Imperial Rolls, one of the best I ever had. Any restaurant that wraps with egg roll paper instead of rice paper is lazy & not legit. Wrapping with Rice paper is more time-consuming but is essential. Also please do not add taro to the imperial roll, it just ruins the taste. The slanted door imperial roll is done perfectly! Third was the chicken clay pot, which seemed simple, but so tasty. We add the sauce to the rice, yummy. Last but not least, the cellophane noodles with wild Dungeness & blue crab were amazing. I remembered having this dish at their Ferry building location, this dish here is even better. Great service from our server Danielle, she was attentive. We can't wait to go back & also like to try their Saturday & Sunday brunch. read more

My wife and I have been fans of Slanted Door for years and mourned the closure of the SF restaurant in the Ferry Building (although we're thrilled to hear that they'll be back in their original location in the Mission in 2025). We stopped by the new Napa restaurant in September of 2024 and had some of the classics, including the to-die-for spring rolls, shaking beef, and Dungeness crab with cellophane noodles. These are old school favorites but they are truly comfort food for us! After 5 years without Slanted Door in SF, we were in heaven. The spring rolls were delicious and so were the two entrees. Thank you Charles Phan for keeping the classics around! We look forward to trying some of the new dishes next time. The new Napa restaurant is beautiful. We don't really understand the "meh" Yelp reviews of this place... to us, Slanted Door is a beloved institution and thrived for decades in the brutal SF restaurant scene, and while the new location hasn't yet reached the pinnacle achieved by the original two restaurants, it's important to understand that the originals were honed and tempered by many, many years in operation. We have confidence that the new location will grow into a classic over time. Looking forward to our next visit! read more

Asked about Pho. Was told Pho is a lunch item and they wouldn't have it until spring. I have so many Vietnamese friends and have been eating pho for literally 30 years! Ive never heard that its only a lunch dish ...that is false! Asked for icetea...was told they didn't have tea yet. Asked if I could add protein to a noodle dish...was told NO! Was then told the crab noodles was their version of protein and noodles. $32 for glass noodles and canned blue crab (and shells)! No flavor, no sauce, nothing interesting or amazing about this! $18 for 3 dumplings...they were tasty...but come on! Got the check and didn't understand why it was $129...when I asked for the itemized the bartender then decided it was a good time to let me know 20% gratuity is included. Really felt this was purposely done and shady AF! (Sidenote: I always tip 25-30% or more depending...so they shot themselves in the foot) Sad and disappointed...exactly what Napa needs another overly priced mediocre restaurant! Since the San Francisco location is temporarily closed a quick Yelp search revealed this brand new location in Napa that just opened in November. I could still smell the newness of the place, and it's gorgeous and modern. The menu selection is not as extensive as their SF location but still featured some classics Shaken beef, Crispy Imperial Spring Rolls, and Cellophane Blue Crab Noodles. The portions are smaller not family style. Smaller portions and expensive for fine Vietnamese cuisine. When I lived in SF I would frequent Slanted Door but since I moved to Southern CA nearby access to Little Saigon for authentic Vietnamese food and good value when compared to Slanted Door. The servers are new at their job and comped us for the missing sticky ribs with the Cellophane Blue Crab Noodles which was nice of them to do that for us. After dinner while walking out I bumped into the chef "Doung" sitting at the bar and we took a photo together. It's a lovely location for delicious new Vietnamese cuisine but only if you can afford to pay. read more

Love the Slanted Door Ferry building in SF (closed for reno) and cook from Chef Phan's cookbook. Party of 4, seated soon after our reservation time. Seated in main room along the bench, where there is very little room between tables (physically can't can't ingress/egress from one side). Quite noisy as there's no buffering with the high ceiling and hard surfaces. Nice look inside and out. Though, nowhere to wait for your table other than at the bar (if there's a seat) and the outdoor courtyard. Menu has items from the Ferry Building menu (Ferry building location still closed), but is much more limited (our server told us items will be added over time). Server was lovely and tried his best, but the kitchen, for all of our orders, was quite slow. More than 2 hours for dinner (with no dessert). Tables around us were received food much quicker than us. We ordered raw seafood and cooked appetizers - we had not planned on much sharing. They brought out the raw seafood first (after having been seated for more than 45 minutes), none of which I was going to eat ... they had planned on brining the cooked appetizers after we were done with the raw appetizers. They were good about bringing the cooked apps once they learned I was not eating the raw apps. The yellowtail sashimi is sliced too thick and there are only 3 slices. Really, they should slice them into 6 thinner pieces. The raw scallops with leek vinaigrette, toasted sesame and puffed rice crackers were outstanding. The Gau Choy Gau (shrimp and chive dumpling - think dim sum) was also nice. The bbq spareribs were fall off the bone tender and quite good, although a touch too sweet. The crispy imperial rolls were a bit too oily ... though the lettuce, mint and vermicelli noodles with chives and the dipping sauce helped a bit. The lemongrass pork chop with cilantro sauce and pickled chilis was unevenly cooked (undercooked in places) and quite fatty. Mushrooms were good. The shaking beef is not thin sliced, as expected, but rather large pieces cooked to medium rare; lime pepper sauce and red onions were flavorful. Would have liked beef sliced thinner. My husband liked it though. My claypot chicken was good ... however, the more I ate, the more the sauce became cloyingly sweet. Chicken thighs were cooked well, though had rubbery/chewy skin on ... I took it off. Doesn't come with noodles or rice ... ordered jasmine rice. We were not sharing our entrees, and they came out staggered, my husband's came out last, literally 15 minutes after the others, even though we told our server we were ordering each entree for ourselves and not to share. Brussels Sprouts side was a bit overcooked and oily, but had great flavor, a hint of citrus and chili. There is a men's bathroom and a gender neutral multi-stall bathroom. We were told they are taking the urinal out of the men's bathroom (when I asked why men had their own single-gender bathroom) and turning it into a gender neutral bathroom too (when?). My hope is that when they do that, they will remove the outer doors to all bathrooms. Also, they need to clean the stalls more regularly ... the one my friend and I used was disgustingly dirty (floor and fixture). Not a good way to end our evening. read more

There were only three of us. I don't know whose idea this was but it's not a good one. There was a lot of chatting going on and we didn't get. (I think) the attention we should've gotten, the food is great, drinks were fantastic, but the 20% has to go or I'm not coming back. It's my decision to leave what I want to leave not yours. Also, I'd rather pay cash and give it to the person that I value for their service. I don't think management should have one iota of an accounting hand in it.! Came here for my birthday. The service was excellent! Wish I can also rave about the food but we were disappointed. We ordered the pork ribs and they were tough. For the price, we expected it to fall off the bone. We also ordered the banh Nam. When it arrived, it didn't look appetizing. It was just on top of a banana leaf, not wrapped as the menu states. Most importantly, the rice flour tasted undercooked. The bok choy was very salty. We also ordered the halibut clay pot. It was the only dish we enjoyed. I also ordered the Singapore Sling. It was a very good drink! We also had the pear tart which came out with a sparkling candle. That was a nice touch! Overall, the 3 stars is all I can give. There are so many restaurants in Napa we've been to and unfortunately this one is not at the top of our list. read more
