Five years ago, this was the restaurant where we had our very first date. So when our fifth anniversary rolled around, there was really only one place to go. We arrived for an early dinner around 5 PM, full of nostalgia and high expectations...and left with very mixed feelings. We started with drinks and three appetizers to share. The pineapple spritzer was a great way to kick things off...refreshing, well-balanced, and not sweet which I appreciate. Our apps: - Crispy Shrimp and Pork Imperial Eggrolls: we re-ordered this. Tasty enough, but the portion size for the price was genuinely disappointing. You're getting a few small bites and not much else. - Shrimp and Chive Pan Fried Dumplings: The biggest letdown of the night. The dough on the bottom was thick and gummy, and the filling was completely bland.....no seasoning, no excitement. Pass. - Hoisin Barbecue Pork Ribs: The best of the three in terms of portion, but brace yourself -- these are an absolute mess to eat. I would not order these again. With mixed feelings about the food, we jumped straight to dessert, which is where the meal was redeemed. The burnt Basque cheesecake came topped with diced caramel apples and crispy strudel- one of the best desserts I've had in a long time. Overall, this visit left us a little deflated. Amazing! We had a great dinner here with friends last night. We were quite surprised that the open space didn't really make the restaurant too loud. The waiters were so fun and helpful with the menu. We started off with some delicious appetizers of imperial rolls and barbecue ribs. I ordered the water lily cocktail, which was very delicious and has since sparked a new personal interest in milk-washed spirits. Since the restaurant was family dining style we just kept ordering and shared everything! We tried the roasted duck, vermicelli crab noodles, the asparagus side dish, pork and shrimp dumplings, and shaking beef with jasmine rice. Everything was so yummy! Wow! This place is such a hidden gem in the City Center plaza! I never see anyone eat here and I can't imagine why! My boyfriend took me here for a nice lunch and I can't wait to do it again! We got the sashimi and the bbq pork bao to start, and I have to say that I'd come back for the sashimi alone. It was fresh, refreshing, and a delicious way to start my meal. I also ordered the lemongrass sausage and it was wonderful! Nuanced with depth, and a great solid meal :) For drinks I got the Water Lily, and my boyfriend got a non-alcoholic Paloma. I chose this place for our Valentine's Day dinner this year. It was a huge disappointment and I will not come back here again. Parking was easy to find and the restaurant is located under the escalator. I don't mind the automatic 20% service fee but service should be expected. Our server Tavitha was weird then it got worse. We started with the spring rolls $18 which were delicious. Then it went downhill from there. Our reservations were for 5pm and it was 5:45pm until we received our first course. The restaurant wasn't completely booked and there were plenty of open tables. After an hour, the rest of our food comes out. The bbq pork ribs $28 which were awful. I told our server to let someone know these are super chewy, grisly and inedible. Tavaitha doubled down and said it was prepared "asian style" and I'm like what are you talking about? She had no clue and questioned what grisly meant. The shaking beef $58 was underwhelming. It was large steak pieces missing that infamous shaking flavor with a ton of red onion. The lime sauce made it okay to eat but it was tough. The rest of our order: bok choy $13, white rice $5, Dungeness crab $55, and papaya salad $16. I thought the crab was on the small side right at 5" and it was tough to eat. The pieces don't come out when cracked like fresh crab. The flavor profile was there, paired with the garlic butter and "egg custard" which essentially are the crab guts. Also, the hot chili sauce option is $12 - to which their own siracha should have a warning label. It was hot spicy AF. The chili garlic was good and I wanted more of it. I'm giving this 2/5 stars because service was so slow despite the restaurant not being jammed packed. We seen at least 3 other tables seated after us leave earlier than us because our server was everywhere but our table. Servers didn't clear or refresh our plates for our main entrees. Then when we were done, our leftover food was confirmed as packed, assured by the busser that "all the food" was packed, which it wasn't. And our server was a little pretentious for her own good. I didn't trust her after the asian comment. I wish the food was better and was hopeful when I made the reservation. After receiving my bill, I asked about the pork ribs- why they weren't packed to go? I was told the kitchen threw out all the pork ribs YET you served them and charged me for it. After being told it was prepared "asian style", I'm having trust issues here at Slanted Door. I thought the overall dining experience was sub par with a shameful 20% service fee, only enjoying the spring rolls = $269 dinner for two. After telling the server the third time about the pork ribs, it was eventually removed from the bill. read more

We used to dine at the original location in the ferry building. A group of six of us went to the Slanted Door San Ramon after golfing in Livermore. Space is large and popping. Parking is easy. Our server was really knowledgeable and took our entire order without writing anything down. Pretty impressive memory. He also knew the wine list inside out. I had a really enjoyable lunch here this afternoon--they were also serving brunch, which was a nice bonus. We ordered the crispy imperial rolls, chicken pho, and xôi mặn (a savory sticky rice dish with sliced Chinese sausage and mushrooms). Everything was flavorful and satisfying. We couldn't resist trying the cinnamon roll from the brunch menu for dessert, and it was definitely worth it. Had a nice Mothers Day adventure here tonight. I only wanted to do a to-go order but that wasn't an option on such a busy night BUT fortunately I was able to book a last minute appt and when we entered we were sat immediately by the lovely door greeter. Since we said we would be quick she asked if the bar was ok and we agreed. There we got to see exactly what was happening in their wide open kitchen and a lot was happening! Spring rolls 10/10 best I ever had! Shrimp imperial rolls 8/10 but didn't have the chance to try as suggested as a wrap (with the lettuce and noodles) after they started bagging the food. Here is what we ordered: - Arnold Palmers (delicious and they gave us free refills!) - Crispy Pork Belly (I forgot what the exact name was on the menu as I couldn't find it on there but it was so tasty and unique -- I've never had a dish like this, it was crispy and well seasoned on the outside, and had a chewy texture on the inside, which was a balance we enjoyed) - Crispy Imperial Rolls with Tofu (also had a great texture and flavor profile, the sauce was a highlight) - Shaking Beef (we got this for our main -- also cooked really well and paired nicely with rice. I also enjoyed all of the grilled veggies it came with) We also ordered a noodle dish in addition but later realized we ordered too much for 2 people. This was opened at an awkward time for lunch so we stopped by. It was happy hour and they only had a specific happy hour menu. Some of the apps were priced well, but the rest of the entrees were regularly priced as their normal menu? Upon entering, we were greeted by a kind server who ended up being our server for the first half of our meal. Drinks came quickly but it took awhile to order. The server was attending to another table that walked in after us, which was understandable, but there were a lot of people who could've assisted us. A lot of people were just standing around for the duration of our meal and not there when needed, but elsewhere, such as preparing utensils at empty tables. It was 3pm, so it was pretty empty. On to the food. Everything was so salty except for the carpaccio, which was the only thing that was lacking in flavor. It was 3 pieces of meat with chips and all we could taste was shallot oil, but no flavor. The imperial rolls were probably the best thing we had and the fish sauce paired nicely with it. The chicken wings were soooooo salty. The chicken wing was salty itself and with the fish sauce, took it over the top. The shaking beef was $58 (lol) and it came with big pieces of beef cubes. It would be better if the beef was smaller as you had to cut the beef like it was a piece of steak, which is uncommon for shaking beef. There were more onions than beef, but again, salty. The yuba noodles were good, but had less noodles and more veggies. I asked for hot sauce or Thai chilies and they have a $12 chili sauce sampler (lol again cause what). I didn't get that and ordered a side of the Thai chilies in fish sauce ($3). You would think if I'm paying for $58 for shaking beef, you'd just give me a side of Thai chilies. They will nickel and dime you here for everything. I wish the server would ask if I wanted everything to come out at once because they gave us our apps and awhile passed and no entrees came. Our kids wanted the noodles as they're picky eaters, but I wish they would've asked. If I didn't ask about it sooner, they would've gave it to us when the apps were done. The service was ok-ish until shift change and some Asian lady took over. She seemed nice, but she poured our water when they gave us a carafe of water and she poured water in my husband's glass of tequila that he didn't drink yet. It was water with a hint of tequila at that point. We had our kids with us so we were distracted and didn't notice till after. Not sure how that happened when their water cup and their drink cups are completely different. Then when I asked for napkins, she grabbed a dirty one that was folded in half from our table, handed it to me and said "I'll grab you more." This was extremely odd and somewhat rude. Honestly, I expected better food and service for the high price point and location. We didn't finish the food and got a lot packed up, but even when we tried eating it at home, it was just too salty. On my arrival the staff was very polite and super nice. I came there for some lunch and they have a great lunch menu if you're not looking for anything heavy. My waiter/ bartender was Ricardo. He is so sweet, very knowledgeable. He definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to the dishes here. I ordered the chicken pho. It was amazing. Super light broth, great chicken, good flavor. They give you a lot. So I was really happy to be able to pack the rest and have it for dinner. Ricardo suggested on me trying a tea called " A thousand days of Red Jasmine" I believe and it was super good. I also got a dessert called chè chuối (coconut milk, thai banana, tapioca pearls). We went on a Thursday night and it wasn't crowded at all but was ignored by staff for 10 mins until we were seated. After being seated and looking at the menu for 20 mins, our server never came back to check in on us. We had to flag down a different server to get our order in. So excited when they opened in San Ramon a few years ago. But it was just not the same. Don't care for the vibe at the San Ramon mall. The large glass walls made sense in San Francisco to see the panoramic view. In San Ramon, there is nothing to see but a suburban mall. It is just a big room with tall ceilings and hard surfaces. Made me think of a fish bowl. The music playing was jazzy but maybe that was why it was too loud, to combat echoes. I think there was a potted plant at the reception desk but it was too small and spiky to soften the big space. Vibe seemed cold to me. Service was efficient. The server knew what she was doing. However, the room was so big, it took a long time for her to check on her tables. Even though she only had 4 occupied tables, it was quite a hike for her to get back to me every time I requested something. The food saved the visit. It was excellent. I only had time for a couple of appetizers before my appointment. Got the green papaya salad and the sashimi. The veg/fruit was crunchy, a great alternative to leafy green salads. Loved the texture. Also loved the play on salty and sweet. It was also a little spicy but this was fleeting and didn't linger on the tongue. The yellowtail was very fresh. Nice contrast of crispy fried shallots to buttery fish. Love a garnish that compliments the fish instead of masking it. Expensive?Maybe. Another slice of yellowtail would have been nice. They had food advertised outside that pulled us in to try the place, only for us to find out they did not even have what was being advertised. That already set the tone. We still decided to give other menu items a chance, and that turned out to be a mistake. The food was mediocre, overpriced, and nowhere near worth what they charge. Then came the mandatory 20% tip, supposedly to "pay their employees' wages." That is ridiculous. Paying your staff is the restaurant's responsibility, not something you force onto customers and disguise as a tip. A tip should be based on the quality of the food and service, not automatically demanded regardless of how disappointing the experience was. Policies like that do nothing but leave a bad taste and make the whole place feel dishonest. Only leaving a 2 star because the interior and layout was not bad. To make it worse, the Vietnamese coffee was terrible. It tasted watered down, inauthentic, and careless. If you are going to charge premium prices, at least serve something that resembles actual Vietnamese coffee instead of a weak imitation. Overall, the experience was misleading, overpriced, and deeply disappointing. False advertising to get people in the door, mediocre food, watered-down drinks, and a forced 20% charge on top of it all. We ordered Papaya salad and vegetable spring roll to share as our starters. I really love papaya salad and this doesn't disappoint! Fresh and crisp with a light dressing, one of our favorites. The vegetable spring roll was big!! Very filling and came with a peanut dipping sauce. Delicious (but I will say when we got the other food we ordered, maybe we could have skipped the roll as I was pretty full. After our starters were done, they came and took our main order. We decided on the glass noodle w/crab and skirt steak. I've had the noodles with crab in the past, another favorite!!!! It's spacious and in the middle of Bishop City Center so it looked promising but the pho lacks flavor, the meat tastes fake and the hot sauce they give you tastes spicy but has no flavor which is something I have never experienced before. I found two eye lashes in my pho and the manager told me that I have "good eyes" because he had to look really hard to see them. They offered me something to make up for it but I didn't want to spend my calories on food I didn't like. Banana leaf dumpling appetizer was good but not enough to make me come back to this place. As a San Ramon residence, I've walked by this place regularly. Finally one night, my wife and I decided to try it out. As I entered, the place felt like a huge cafeteria. The open concept is cool but it felt like a food court at the mall. The Mackerel was overly sweet and felt like I was swallowing a fish jolly rancher. The spring rolls we ordered tasted like something I could have bought for 5 dollars in China town. The crab noods were good but be prepared to order at least 3 orders to get a nice fill. Literally, same hot sauces that come FREE in any Asian restaurant. Exact ones Asian restaurants provide in the containers on every table top. This is where the majority of the stars went on this one: my wife and I ordered an app, 2 child size menu items and 4 drinks. We sat at the bar, due to the cafeteria like venue, and at the end they put in an automatic 20% gratuity. I would understand if we came with a crew of 6+ but for two people who sat at a bar to automatically charge 20% is steep. We didn't get outstanding service. We got subpar service. We got regular Apple Bees service. Overall the tipping culture has gone haywire but that's for a different discussion. Robbery along with the child like portions is definitely why I wouldn't go back. So why 1 star when the only positive thing so far were the noods you might ask? 3 out of the 4 drinks we ordered were good. That's it. Be prepared for Slanted door to be permanently shut doors soon. I've been to the SF location many years ago when this was the only hip Vietnamese cuisine back in the early 2000s. It was where you'd take your dates. It's where you'd dress to impress. Either the times have changed or I'm just decades older. Maybe a little bit of both. I do remember it being a little upscale, but I was stunned when I saw the $58 shaking beef here. I am sure the filet mignon is of high quality, but north of $50 of anything is not in my wheelhouse. I shared my opinion with our server Brooklyn. She said she's new, but she is so professional and sweet. She's also a doppelgänger of a famous gymnast or an actress turned duchess. If you go there, you'll know what I mean. We had some good laughs with her. Thanks for being a good sport Brooklyn. Today I had a nice healthy lunch here. Everything was delicious. My buddy and I shared all dishes. The crispy imperial roll and fried soft shell crab are both served with lettuce and Vietnamese herbs. Both are deep fried with a lot of flavor on its own. That is why the lettuce and herbs are there to spread the flavors. To eat, you make a bed of lettuce, put some of the fried goodies over herbs, vermicelli and their sweet fish sauce. It's a burst of flavor and freshness. The final dish is the chicken vermicelli. I was a little disappointed that the portion is a bit small. My friend and I devoured every morsel and leaf of our appetizers and main dish. It's that good, but also not that much of the good stuff. We had to keep asking for more lettuce and they didn't seem to charge us so we appreciate that. I don't mind eating high end Vietnamese cuisine and paying a little premium in a nice venue. I would even pay a few dollars more for let's say their Imperial Rolls but give a little more rolls and side veggies.
