I'm so happy to finally find pizza place I'd recommend to friends visiting from out of town. I always get intimidated when a friend from NYC or Chicago (even though I've never been) asks for pizza recommendations, since I don't know if anything in my repertoire could compare. I mean, as a SoCal native, I always sigh sadly when people recommend me a KBBQ place that simply can't compare... and don't even get me started on SF Chinese food (I hear the South Bay is better; I honestly wouldn't know because I don't eat much Chinese food at restaurants - I cook it myself). That said, all is well now that I DO have a place to recommend! Sliver pizza is absolutely delicious. My hair colorist recommended it to me after I told her I wanted to try Cheese Board - apparently, the chef at Sliver used to work there, until they had a falling out. When I went on a Saturday afternoon, the place was fairly empty, but my guess is it's because Cal students are probably still on Winter Break. Given its proximity to campus, there's absolutely no way Sliver isn't a student favorite. I relent, there are some things Cal beats Stanford in. It's not NY pizza - it's distinctly Californian. You go with the pizza of the day, which for me was something with corn, cilantro, onions, and tomatoes (I can't remember the full description. I just remember how good it was). I've always said California excels at fresh produce (I started missing veggies sooo bad after a week in NYC), so it's awesome to see a twist on pizza that I'd consider "Californian" (as my colorist gracefully articulated, "who puts corn and asparagus on a pizza?!"). The crust is thin, but not as thin as NY pizza - with a crisp bottom and a slight, satisfying chew I've never tasted in a pizza before. As someone who adores mochi muffins, I'm a sucker for anything with a light touch of chew. The combination of toppings was great, but honestly, it's the chewy crust that melted my heart. But don't even get me started on the green sauce. I don't know what the heck they put in it, but it's KILLER. I loooooove that it's self-serve, so you can get as many containers of it as you want. I saw a guy ahead of me get 5 containers of green sauce to go for 1 slice of pizza. No shame; I love it. Thanks to him and Brene Brown's urge to "dare greatly", I took 2 containers of just the sauce home just to see if I can replicate it. Many a'nights have been blessed by sliver vegan pizzas and (stolen large cups of - sorry) their famous green sauce... Right now during COVID times, they're selling it in 3oz containers that you can get in addition to - or independently- of some pizza. Do notttt skip on this sauce! The most recent time it was just my boyfriend who ate - and he ordered a basic Cheese Pizza (I don't get it either, but you do you boy). He didn't open it until we had walked all the way home, and only then did he disappointedly discover that this pizza was quite literally just pizza dough and cheese. Zero red sauce to cushion and flavor the pie. For a boy who loves his basic pizzas and red sauces, he was heartbroken. He tried to play it off, but I sauntered up and played "best girlfriend ever" - I hate sending food "back," but the things you'll do for a boy... I couldn't get through to them via phone for the life me, so I drove the pizza back to Sliver, went in and asked the (one) woman working about the margarita-less Margarita Pizza. It was in that moment that I, a Cal student and Berkeley local, and my boyfriend, a poor naive visitor to the Bay, learned that Sliver NEVER uses red sauce. Who knew?? I came here on a weekday in the late afternoon to grab a single slice before getting on the Bart. Sliver only offers one flavor of pizza each day and the flavor changes every single day. When I went, the flavor was "crimini mushrooms, yellow onions, mozzarella, goat cheese, fresh herbs, infused rosemary & chanterelle mushroom olive oil". The slice comes with a small "sliver" on top, which is a nice bonus. The pizza was really oily, so I had to grab some napkins to blot off the oil. Sliver used to be located near Purple Cow near Shattuck, and they opened this Southside location (replacing Pieology). My all time favorite is the corn pizza, as I've always been a fan of corn. Add in a delicious layer of cheese, crispy crust, and their magical green sauce, and it gets you pretty close to heaven in your mouth! The green sauce is addicting and I've definitely seen people scoop extra containers (even saw someone bring a jar!) of it to take home. TL;DR - If you're in the area, you need to stop by. Check their schedule to see what the pizza of the day is, order ahead if you hate to wait, and make sure to get lots of green sauce. This is a classic Berkeley establishment, and the Telegraph location is ideal if you're in the area and want food quickly. If you order ahead ~15 min, you can literally walk in and out with your pizza. Fair warning, there won't be the outdoor seating/ambiance in other sliver locations (or cheeseboard in North Berkeley), if that's more your style. The pizza changes daily, and their schedule is on the site. A few consistent things: pizza is always on thin sourdough crust, no marinara sauce (instead you get sauce on the side,) and your orders will come with a sliver on top (~1/2 the size of a regular slice). All are vegetarian, with vegan options available for order. It's also a great, mission-driven company. Seriously, if the great food isn't enough to convince you to visit, they also work with organizations committed to ending human trafficking. Sliver is a movie night / happy hour staple and a crowd-pleaser, but I would never go on my own. The pizza is very greasy and just kind of meh, no matter the daily rotation. I have the same issue with Cheeseboard, whose pizzas are remarkably similar. The two are roughly equal in terms of quality; however, unlike Cheeseboard, it is quick and easy to get a pizza from Sliver. The green sauce is genuinely great on its own, but it's also the only salve from all the fat. Everyone I've eaten with ends up covering every slice in the stuff, so buying a 10oz tub (or two) is necessary. I would like to reverse engineer that sauce and put it on my soft-boiled eggs in the morning. There's not much more to say. It's average pizza at a reasonable price and pretty convenient. read more

Sliver Pizzeria offers one pizza every day, you can choose from a variety of different sizes, from a sliver all the way to a whole pizza. The prices are unbeatable too!! I thought I would be extremely bothered that there was no protein on the pizza of the day, but the combination of pizza toppings was so different and interesting, I completely forgot it was lacking pepperoni and chicken. I got a whole pizza to share with three people and we finished it in one setting. The two sauces they have are super great. I personally like the green sauce more. The inside has plenty of seating, from bench tables to couches. Its a great place to meet up with friends. Also, you get your pizza instantaneously. If you are a fan of Arizmendi, Cheese Board, or Gioia, you will want to try this pizza joint, at a new location. They have a daily special (always vegetarian), which is available as a slice, half pie or a whole pie. Its' cheap, thin crust, freshly baked, laced with seasonal veggies, artisanal cheese and uber delicious. Make sure you get a few pumps of the green pesto'ish tangy salsa sauce from the side. This adds a new flavor dimension to your palette, as the succulently crispy sour-dough crust, dances with the tomato sauce and delectable toppings (in my case, the green sauce worked well with the Bulgarian feta on the daily special) - I nearly drool as I recall my experience. You serve yourself, order at the counter (there can be a line, but it's worth it). On the plus side, there is ample seating, and large flat-screen TV's to lounge around. They also serve beer, Kombucha and made-to-order pizza and salads. My goto though is the daily special pizza slice. Parking can be challenging, so be prepared to walk a little if you are planning to drive there. read more

The last time I had Sliver was back in Nov 2013 - almost 3 years ago - and I couldn't pass up the perfect opportunity for delicious vegetarian pizza and their specialty green sauce. Sliver, like Cheeseboard (also in Berkeley) offers only one kind of pizza per day. On a Saturday, their pizza of the day contained: Fresh cremini mushrooms, caramelised onions, baby spinach, mozzarella & campo del montalban cheese, parsley, pine nuts, and garlic olive. Phew what a mouthful. I opted for a slice - only $2.75 - which also came with a 'sliver' of pizza on top! Score! To fuel my immediate hunger, I devoured the sliver first and saved the bigger slice for later. No experience at Sliver is complete without topping (or dousing) your pizza slice with their specialty green sauce - out of this world. SLIVER used to be located on Center St right near Downtown Berkeley BART, but have since moved to Telegraph Ave. This was my first time going to their new location and the extra walk from BART was completely worth it. They serve one type of pizza a day (check their website for their weekly rotation) with a whole pizza (8-slices) costing $20, half $12, and slice $3. I got a slice, and it's customary for them to throw in an "extra" mini slice, so I really got two slices for the price of one! You can always expect fresh ingredients, warm pizza, and an excellent combination of flavors. The pizza on this particular day was heirloom tomatoes, corn, kale, and red onions. Mm... Inside, the restaurant is very spacious, with a combination of small and long tables, as well as 3-4 TVs playing sports. You order at the counter and then seat yourself. Since they only make one type of pizza a day, the line moves quickly and there is virtually no wait-time for the pizza to be ready. It feeds about 3-4 adults. It was ready immediately. No waiting for it to be prepared as it was already since there is one pie of the day and that's it. It's always vegetarian. I kind of like the gimmick, but in the end, I don't know if I'd return so quickly. I enjoy making my own choices. Berkeley seems fast on it's way to becoming the city with the most pizzarias per capita this side of the Tiber river. Thankfully, the pizza is so excellent that I am embracing this culinary flux, most recently while dining at Silver. Dining is kind of the wrong word: let's say "jamming". If not for Harrison Barnes (#40 on the Golden State Warriors) promoting a playoff viewing party at this spot, it would have taken me longer to find out about Sliver. I don't go downtown much, I'm not a student, and Cheeseboard, Zachary's and Little Star are all moments away from my house. But Sliver makes the case for forsaking the regular haunts, by offering an amazing product and a very fun environment. The Pizza: Daily pizza changes but always let's the cheese take a major role. No tomato sauce to distract from the pungent flavors like lime or fresh corn that accentuate each killer combination. The one-pie-fits-all approach is a great one for my burnt out brain: you can just trust that whatever you eat was figured out long before you became too ravenous to think clearly. Even if you think you don't like asparagus, it is likely to end up surprising you in a great way. The crust is sourdough-ish, sturdy and thin and the ratio of the toppings to the base is perfect. You bite into a great layer of cheese and veggies, not too crispy, definitely needs some chewing and savoring, and never too overloaded with toppings either. The People: I went for a Warriors themed night and the maitre'd was handing out prizes to a slew of Warriors fans, all ages. At one point the kitchen just gave away some free pizzas. This place exudes good, playful vibes. Hip people working behind the counter, busser busting her butt to keep the place comfortable for customers, and chefs in the kitchen who will smile and wave at you as you head out. This is an excellent, non-pretentious, and gourmet restaurant. A great place to feel the Berkeley community and come together for a good meal (and beer, if that is how you roll). read more

They offer only the topping of the day, which makes it superbly easy to order up without contemplating many usual toppings that other pizza shops usually provide. Life is made more simple that way without those choices, sometimes. The pizza is warmly served right out from the oven and I adore how this spot has a mini bar for draft beers to be ordered up with the pizza. Their signature green sauce is bountiful and you can help yourself at the counter bar for that. It compliments deliciously with the pizza! There is a communal table and adequate booths inside. It is great to watch whatever heated sport's game that is on because they have three big screen TVs hung up. Can't ignore that kind of entertainment. Sliver is essentially Cheeseboard for 20-somethings. Whenever anyone asks me where they should eat in Berkeley, I always recommend Sliver. It's close to the Bart, isn't too expensive ($2.50 for a big slice + extra sliver on top), and the flavors (one served per day) are almost always delicious. This place is also great for groups on a sunny day; if I can't find somewhere to sit inside, I always just grab a couple boxes to go and walk a block towards campus to sit on the grass along Oxford St. When it comes to atmosphere, Sliver takes the gold in trendy-but-casual. There's a bar (it's a pretty small space so it probably gets crowded, especially since happy hour is every day 4-7pm) and then the rest of the restaurant, which is pretty well-separated from the bar area. Live music is playing in one corner, taking inspiration from Cheeseboard. While Cheeseboard has more of a folksy, family vibe, Sliver's music is much more hip and jazzy. The pizza is always great. Sliver pizza is already 5-star-worthy without meat, and on the plus side, I feel (slightly) healthier when I eat this compared to a regular Dominos pepperoni pizza. In my opinion (and I think I've been to Sliver over 50 times), the best flavors are potato, corn, and potato + corn. You can't really go wrong with more regular flavors like roma tomato, but some of my friends dislike the more creative flavors (especially ones with pears or peaches). HOLY SMOKES this place is good. I heard nothing but good things about Sliver, and boy did they exceed those expectations I had coming in. The line may be somewhat long, but don't let that discourage you from trying it, because it goes by extremely quickly. The line was out the door, but we were able to order, pay, and get our food all within 5-7 minutes. I ordered 2 slices and my boyfriend ordered 3 slices. You literally get your food as you pay. Not only that, they are so generous with giving away slivers (little slices)! So if you can't eat that much, don't order too much, unless you want to take home leftovers. We easily found a spot even though the Giants game was going on. My boyfriend ordered a beer from the bar, and got another sliver! This place is awesome for people who are indecisive because they only provide one flavor a day. We had the "Fresh Corn, Red Bell Pepper, Onions, Mozzarella, Cotija Cheese, Cilantro Avocado Pesto". Avocado and Pesto? I WAS SOLD. Each bite blew me away. The cheese was delicious. I don't think I ever had corn in my pizza before, but it was a super delicious sweet touch. I really like the decor of this little place, with a bar off to one side and booth and table seating to the other. The big-screen televisions really give the place a casual, hang-out vibe, while the booths lend an intimate enough feel to focus on who you came with instead of what's being broadcast. Prices are super reasonable, and I'm a fan of their complimentary sauces that serve to cut the grease just a bit. There's none that I don't like! You should try the pear pizza. It has this unique taste that will melt your heart and make your stomach happy. I tend to order a whole pizza for my roomie and I to share. It's a big pizza but we always manage to eat them all. The ones we don't finish is wrapped up and becomes our lunch the next day. Can't believe I have not written a review about Sliver. Well, part of it is they already have a good reputation on Yelp. I guess this is just the icing on a multi-tiered cake with all its embellishments. My favorite sliver pizza is still the one that reminds me of a delicious Mexican corn taco (without meat of course). It has corn and some other veggies I cannot recall, but all I know is they throw in a lime. My oh my that pizza is to die for. Other than that, all the other pizzas are excellent. The spicy cilantro green sauce just adds to its deliciousness. At $3 a piece, I can see why it's teeming with Berkeley high school and college students alike. It's also a great place to catch a game, especially when the Warriors are playing. It gets crowded at game time, so be sure to be early! That's what I plan to do tonight ;) read more
