It was my first time there and I was there for a deaf event that was held. Afterward I decided to get something to eat and went to Sloopy's dinner. The wait was only 10 minutes and there was a line of students. I ordered the taco salad with grilled chicken. A few minutes later I was told by our waitress Nicole that they did not have the grill chicken but had fried chicken instead. So I opted for that. I'm not an OSU grad so I don't have any long-term sentimental attachment to Sloopy's Diner. I was on campus for a meeting around lunchtime and we were planning to "do lunch" after the meeting. Someone in the group was an OSU grad and suggested Sloppy's since it was close and convenient. For anyone who's not familair with Sloopy's, it's in the Campus Center. We had a group of 6 for lunch. Our waitress was excellent. She was there promptly to take our beverage orders and was back quickly with the drinks. She took our orders and the food came out fairly quickly and it was served hot. Sloopy's has such a pleasant atmosphere for any type of conversation -- my friends and I love to joke around here. Upon asking my friend, Ian, for a review of the diner, he says, "Do not get onions in your food. Sloopy's has good onions, but I just don't like them." Needless to say, Sloopy's is Ian-approved. Very poor customer service from their manager, David. There was a mix up with orders and my friends were accused of a dine and dash. While trying to clear this up, David threatened to ban them for life and disregarded the receipt they showed to prove otherwise. He also interrupted them and threatened to file a report against them during a phone call afterwards to ensure the issue was settled, and hung up on them. Let me start off, if you are on campus and have a meal plan, this place is pretty solid. But there is little to no reason to go if you aren't. The food is usually mediocre at best, though prices are fine, except some things that are a bit overpriced. But there are definitely better places to go in the area. The "Sloopy's Pancakes" were very tasty. They had peanut butter and chocolate chips, quite good! However, the BLT was a little questionable. At first they forgot the tomato, but they quickly brought some after we asked. It was also dry since it didn't have mayo or anything on it. However, I may have overheard that the person who made it was new. Overall, the staff was nice, and the service was pretty quick. We waited another 15 minutes before we got our drinks, and I lost track of how long it took to get our food, which consisted of a total of 4 pancakes, 2 orders of bacon and a cinnamon roll. The server was very nice, but we were 1 of 3 tables and there were at least 2 servers, 2 hosts (one may have been a server as well) and one person running takeout, so there should have been no reason for that kind of a wait. Snoopy... Sloppy... whatever the name is. OSU certainly has its share of interesting on-campus dining options, and I must admit that I'm actually a fan of this little diner inside the Union. Sloopy's seems like THE place for meetings, casual dining with friends, and just a way to use your meal plan on something other than take out. It is much more low key in the summertime, but I think that is genuinely reflected in the student staff. I haven't had any awkward interactions with the workers here and the diner atmosphere here makes it seem almost too weird for it to be collegiate dining. But something about it works. Some standouts from the lunch meetings I've had in here include: - Garden Skillet topped with avocado, this is great for someone that's craving a savory breakfast item. - Chicken fingers are definitely a step up from some of the wings they have at Woody's next door, and you get a choice of dipping sauces to go with it - Salmon pasta was meh, but the fish itself was quite delightful for on-campus dining - Biscuits here were great! After your meal, be sure to grab one of their milkshakes or bump up your order to the nearest block with a cookie or two! They have a buckeye shake which I've still yet to try, most likely because the candy itself is so rich! But soon enough I'll sink my Californian taste buds into one. PS- NO TIPPING!! Their prior Student teacher is also a waitress here, so they were pumped to see her on her stomping grounds. This eatery is inside Student Union. It's a 1950s Diner setup with all the decor to match, and 50s music you know and can't help but sing along to playing out. It's American fare, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner: omelets, burgers, wraps, salads, and some simple entrees. Because this joint is thru OSU, your can find all the nutrition info online - good to know, for surfers and faculty. I got the Spinach Salad. Spinach, sliced strawberries, sliced almonds, poppyseed dressing. I needed some meat protein, so added grilled salmon and quinoa/lentils. Not bad. Nothing to brag about. But, it did fill me up. Would it have been awesome if the salmon where grilled fresh? Of course! All in all, it was a decent meal to eat while keeping an eye on students. Decent food - we came here as a large group so it took some time for our food to come out. In the meantime though, they were able to hook me up with a chocolate strawberry milkshake (custom request) and I enjoyed sipping on that. My food was nothing special, although a decent amount of french fries and a large portion of the main dish meant I was very full. My co-worker tried to order a milkshake on the way out of chocolate and peanut butter, but they got it wrong and then tried to say it wasn't possible (it was). They were able to rectify the mistake though and also gave us the other one, rather than throwing it away. Score! And very kind of them. Are you even an osu student if you havent been to sloopys??? Located in the ohio union, sloopys is like a mini old skool dive for osu students. You can definitely eat here as a non student too! They have a very expansive menu including breakfast, lunch, and dinner items. Some of my absolute favs are their pancakes, pastas and shakes. The cajun chicken pasta is amazing. It has the perfect balance of cheesiness and heat. I also love their shakes, the cookies and cream and strawberry are my go to, but you really cant go wrong. Been coming here the past 4 years since I started college, but recently have had consistently terrible experiences. The last two times I've come here, we ordered then waited over an hour for our food to come out -- we ended up leaving because of how long it took. The first time, it was about an hour and a half before we left; the second time (this past Sunday), it had been an hour, our server said she had to "call in" the order multiple times, and at that point they hadn't even started making our food. We saw two groups of people who were seated AFTER we ordered receive their orders before us (note that we ordered an omelette and turkey burger; nothing crazy). I don't blame the servers, but management has to do a much better job at staffing and sending orders out. Also, there should be an option to tip servers. read more

Sloopy's is a diner in the southwest corner of the OSU Union. I went for lunch and, seeing as this place is in the Union, expected counter service, but it turns out that Sloopy's is a sit down place. I tried the classic American breakfast; eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast with coffee ($6.75). It was all pretty respectable. Of course, it's hard for eggs and bacon to be spectacular or terrible, but this was pretty good; cooked well and not greasy. A Fifties style diner in the heart of a modern student union? Yes. Does it work? Indeed it does. Upon entry, you will see a glass case dessert area featuring pies, doughnuts, candy apples, and a whole host of goodies. This is also the area where you pay, so many people stopping in for treats or coffee do tend to cause a line during busy times when you are trying to cash out. This is annoying, but the food is worth it. Diner counter and tables, with those little boomerang shaped Jetsons like shapes and chrome edges adorn the interior. (You may have to wait to be seated, but they give you a pager, so no worries.) Take a look at the menu and realize you will need to come in here many times to try all the selections that look good. My advice, go for breakfast regardless of time of day. Great pancakes, eggs, bacon, shredded hash browns! Breakfast can do no wrong. Burgers, fries, malts? When in 1955, this is good, too. Burritos, soups, chili, omelets. Hell, it's all fantastic. Two items of note: 1) the servers and staff are all students. They cannot accept tips, as tips are supposedly built into the costs. Weird and guilt inducing, but this is how it goes. 2) Fifties music is always playing. Always. Think about this. Some of these songs are going on 60+ years old. Do these students know any of these songs? This is the equivalent of roaring twenties flapper/Charleston songs being played in a restaurant in 1985. Cool but bizarre. This is great spot for breakfast right on the OSU campus. The service was quick and friendly, and because this is on campus the prices were very affordable. I ordered a buckwheat pancake with whipped cream and when it arrived it had the word "Ohio" spelled out in the whipped cream. Fun. I enjoy a good diner experience, and this place has it all. Sloopy's is, simply put, not good. As it is technically campus dining that isn't shocking but every time I go I am disappointed. The price to quality/quantity ratio is out of whack. The chicken fingers come with chips, not fries. The fries cost extra. For chicken fingers. In what society is this acceptable? Since the fries cost extra, you'd think they'd at least be good. Wrong.. they're consistently soggy. The pancakes are thin and spongey, they'd be better if they just used pancake mix from a box. The saving grace for Sloopy's would probably be the milkshakes and floats. Also, the service is usually quick and friendly. I've purchased via Tapingo and Grubhub at this location. It can get busy during busy hours on campus. The food is always warm and made decently close to on time. I love the buffalo chicken wrap and fries, they are so good! My only complaint is that the red onion chunks are MASSIVE and it kind of sucks to bite into a wrap/sandwich and just get straight red onion. I will admit, Sloopy's is a decent place. It is inside of the Ohio Union at OSU, so is really a campus dining facility. But I would consider it the best among them. It's a table service establishment with surprisingly good food. I think that the best items are the breakfast foods [in my opinion, biscuits and gravy or the garden veggie skillet] and the milkshakes [the chocolate chip cookie one, oh my goodness]. The prices for most meals aren't bad at all, though the desserts are way too expensive. Therefore I strongly recommend this location for any student with a meal plan, it's probably the best bang for your buck, and open until like 3am usually. For visitors, it's also not too bad. And who knows, Obama stopped in last year, you never know who you'll see. The customer service staff is completely students, so just be prepared for the inevitable awkward waitress/waiter. read more

I love American Diner food, and Sloopy's does it well. You can get good eggs, omelets, bacon, ice cream, anything you would expect from a diner. The food comes out around 10-15 min., so you have to plan ahead. I have nearly been late to a few morning classes because of this. On a side note, I am slightly joking, but Sloopy's is not a date place. Expect to have your conversation interrupted several times by your waiter who not only wants to take your one side plate away, but also have a joke thrown in for good measure. Really, does the kitchen need my one plate that urgently? Plus, I felt like he was there so often that I almost felt like pulling out a chair for him. I got sick shortly after the first time I went here one night, probably as a result of food poisoning from the nachos or biscuits and gravy, but somehow my illness left me after about an hour. I've been here twice since anyway. It's not bad; it's a whole lot like the Silver Diner chain in the D.C. area. What I love the most about Sloopy's is that I can get breakfast for dinner which is definitely my favorite meal! Tonight I ordered their garden skillet which included hash browns mixed with eggs (ordered how you like), mushrooms, peppers, mozzarella cheese and topped with sour cream and avocado! It also comes with a side of toast and I couldn't resist ordering a side of bacon which was delicious as well. It was a very filling meal but the only suggestion I would have is to place the sour cream and avocado on the side rather than on top of the entire meal. Open 24/7 during the school year. 7am - 2pm in the summer. It's a diner with diner food. First time i came, i ordered a pulled pork sandwich. It was ok. There was some hiccups with my friend's order. She ordered a burger with mushrooms and no onions. The first time they brought it out, there were onions and no mushrooms. The second time, there were neither. So the student wait staff is still learning! They got it fright the third time around. That being said, they are all extremely friendly! Comprised of students attending the university, I had a great time talking with a couple of them on my second visit. I ordered three gigantic pancakes with banana and granola topping for $4.25. The waiter bet me that I couldn't finish it. Of course, now I had to finish it and BAM I did (took two breaks). Soo, it was an enjoyable experience. The food is average so don't expect too much. Pancake quality is pretty much the same no matter where you go though and this place definitely fits the bill for that. I would definitely go back if I'm craving another stack of pancakes... although next time i will probably just get one or two. read more

I was here with a three year old, and with campus restaurants that seems to be a rarity, but they managed to rustle up some crayons for him, and found a kid cup for his water, even if it took them awhile. That aside, the place was clean, and the grilled cheese with bacon was exactly right. The salad was about what you'd expect from any diner, with lettuce, lots of carrot, and one sad looking tomato, but the ranch dressing tasted exactly like Wishbone Ranch, which happens to be my favorite, so that saved it. My son got chicken tenders and french fries and gobbled them down. For campus food, Sloopy's is a great diner! I can't name too many colleges who have that kind of place on your meal plan. But really anyone can go to Sloopy's, as long as you don't mind being surrounded by college kids. I had the Turkey Burger, and it was good! My sister had a turkey club sandwich for around the same place and said it was good! My brother had the fish sandwich and it was HUGE. He ate the whole thing, of course. My favorite thing about Sloopy's is the brunch. The breakfast sandwich on a biscuit is a foolproof hangover cure. The pancakes are fluffy and delicious, with several flavor options. The service at Sloopy's is very average...a college student was waiting on us so we didn't expect too much. I eat a late breakfast/ early lunch almost every day on OSU campus. Today I decided to try to save $1-$2 by eating at sloopy's instead of heirloom. It took 15 minutes for anyone to come to my table, and an additional 30 minutes for my food to appear. It's NOT busy in here right now. The employees here (students) do not work for tips, and it's obvious. The food options are uninspired and, for the most part, unhealthy. This is unsurprising considering it's a diner, but they could at least amp up the quality of the ingredients and their preparation. I ordered a custom scramble (they define this as having the ingredients "mixed into" the egg). It came out with a pile of (clearly canned) black beans, barely warmed, plopped on top of some scrambled eggs. Sloopy's earns its third star only for its location and price. read more
