I created a Yelp Account just to review this guy. What a total scam. Spends 5 minutes arbitrarily shaving parts of your head. A quick chop here and there. End result: this spends 5 minutes with you charges you 14 bucks, you walk out like a moron and with hair sticking up in the back of your head, and he makes 168 $$ an hour. Sly is genuine. He cuts with care and diligence and does a great job of meeting your requests. I had always had one trouble spot on my hair whenever I parted it, and when Sly came across it, he came up with a solution, made the cut, and made parting my hair MUCH more manageable. Cambridge local -- I've been coming here for years. Once you walk in you feel welcomed accompanied with plenty of seating. Very nice atmosphere inside and well decorated; there is usually some kind of movie playing or casual banter to keep you occupied. As for the haircut, VERY good and DETAILED -- just tell them what you want and they'll do it. They're not in the business of guessing what people want; they're far too busy for that. I always go in and get a nice skin (zero/bald) fade with it a little long on top and it's always done to the T. Very quick and deliberate, as long as there is not a line, which generally moves pretty quickly. I recommend this place to everyone including people that do not live in Cambridge. For $15 a cut it is unheard of and also unparalleled with the quality of haircut you can get -- especially for the area! Sly has been like family and always taking care of me and my fresh cut. I just wish I could upload a pic of my haircut but I don't have the courage to do so. I had particularly asked him not to make my hair short and but he failed in doing so. I asked him to use scissors and he literally chopped off a huge part of my hair and that left me puzzled. Eventually the haircut ended with a '0' size on my left side and a '4' on my right side. When I pointed out that my hair is uneven, he just said that its what I had asked for. On further discussion, he started getting really rude with heated up comments and I was really not sure how I should respond to such language. (I noticed there are others who have shared similar experiences here) It's one thing to commit a mistake and a totally different thing to not accept it and turn violent against your customer when they point out your fault. This haircut has been a nightmare for me. I would rather cut my hair with a 'lawn mower' than go to this guy ever again. read more

I hate to be the odd one out here, but I really did not have a good experience at Sly's Barber Shop. I told him what I wanted and he immediately understood and essentially said that he knew exactly what I was talking about, which made me feel confident that the haircut would turn out as great as people on here had said it would; however, that didn't happen. He started razoring my hair and he was going so quickly that it was somewhat uncomfortable. I was disappointed because he had me facing away from the mirror the whole time, so I couldn't see what he was doing. After a few minutes, he starts to take off the cape thing, while I was still facing away from the mirror... So I stopped him and said, "wait, before you finish, can I actually see what my hair looks like??" and he was like "Oh yeah sure." So he turned me around and I wasn't pleased with a part of it so he quickly tried to get it more how I wanted. In the moment it seemed fine after he touched it up, so I paid and left. When I got home, I realized that 1. The front section of my hair was completely uneven. There were some hairs that were half the length of others. There was also one section of hair that was way too long and kind of stuck out, so I had to cut it myself to make it even. 2. I also noticed that he hadn't shaved the bottom of the sideburns, so they were longer than I wanted and I had to shave that myself. 3. The thing I was MOST pissed off about was that he actually entirely shaved part of my normal hair line off around the top section of my sideburns. So yeah, maybe if I wanted to shave that upper section of my sideburn everyday it would be fine, but I don't, so now it's awkwardly growing back and looks weird next to the thicker "normal" length of my hair there. Why he didn't leave my normal hairline as is, or at least ask me before shaving it off (remember I wasn't facing the mirror so I couldn't see) is beyond me. Another thing... The entire appointment (including talking, cut, paying) took only 10 minutes! Some people might like that, but maybe if he had slowed down it wouldn't have hurt as much, and my hair might have actually looked good! Anyway, yes, there are many good reviews here. And in fact I went because my friend got a great cut at Sly's. But I didn't, and I felt like I had to share my experience because I am still upset with the service and cut I received. read more

This is a hidden gem of a barber shop in Cambridge. The building and aesthetic is a little shady but the haircut and price makes up for that. The place is owned by Sly, a very nice family man who greets you when you come in and you just sit along the wall until it is your turn. I asked him what I wanted and he gave it to me perfectly in like 10-15minutes. He does keep a nice conversation going throughout the haircut and asked if there was anything he could fix up at the end, but there was nothing to fix with mine. You will not beat the pricing anywhere in the Boston/Cambridge area, mine came to $15 with tip included. Another reviewer said he spins you away from the mirror, which is true for most of it but he'll still spin you towards the mirror sometimes during the haircut. It is a great alternative to a Supercuts chain and you can feel good about supporting a local business. Overall, I would definitely go back again. read more

Seems to me that the service has gone way downhill. Used to be quick and precise, but now Sly seems to be genuinely disinterested in getting things right. Not to mention the lack of attention to basics, also he never bothered to ask what the customer wants. Recently I had a haircut there, and the finish was very sloppy. Perhaps he was just tired. Large areas in the back were uneven, and he simply did not seem to notice. Also I had seen at least two occurrences where customers did not pay after the cuts. Maybe these were friends, and it makes me wonder whether the glowing ratings indeed came from the same cohort. read more

For the past few years, I've been cutting my own hair. I do enjoy it, but it started because all of the other barbers I'd gone to could not get it right. Well, I decided to give it another shot today and found out about Sly's here on Yelp. I was a bit skeptical since there were only a few reviews on here (all perfect) and the price seemed too good to be true, but I decided to give it a shot. I walked a good 20 minutes just to check out this place. The shop was nice and clean. There's a nice flat screen TV on the wall in case you get bored waiting. All of his equipment looks new. A few regulars also came in while I was waiting, which is always a good sign. Sly asked how I wanted my hair and I told him what I had told all the other barbers: "Leave the top ALONE and tight on the sides." At first, the sides weren't as short as I had hoped, but I realized that just saying "tight" really doesn't give a good idea of short I want it, so I asked him if he could go a bit it closer. He had no problem with that at all. A regular cut costs $12, but I gave him $17 and left with the haircut that I've been trying to get for the past few years. Definitely worth it. read more

It took me more than a few years to find a good barber back in my home in Colorado. I'm spending a few months in Boston, and among my fears was finding a good barber. 4.5 stars on Yelp is nothing to be taken lightly, so I decided to give this place a shot. Although it was a lot smaller than I expected it to be, it definitely made up for it in the price and quality of the cut. At $14, this haircut was the cheapest I've had. Although it was not as detailed or polished as the cuts I get back in Colorado, the barber was skilled and helpful. Very friendly environment, for sure. Slys barbershop is a great neighborhood spot for all walks of life. He caters to every hair type and does a traffic job. Sly has learned to say hello in quite a few different languages so he can make all of his customers feel welcome. He's the kind of guy that makes you feel you have known him your whole life. Referred here by a friend who had a good experience...Hands down the worst haircut I've ever gotten. I have a fade I asked him to shorten the sides and thin out the top, since it was getting thick, but wanted to keep it long. He proceeded to cut large chunks off various parts of the top on my head. I couldn't see what he was doing since he had me facing opposite to the mirror the whole time. Now I have one inch bangs, and 5 inches on the top of my head in random spots. Sides are all different lengths as well. Had to cut all my hair off so I can go out in public. Thanks for setting me back 4 months of growing my hair the right way. If you don't know how to cut a fade or are uncomfortable cutting someone's hair since you've clearly never done it before you should say so. Bottom line, If you want a fade I recommend going elsewhere.. I also feel compelled to say that it was not Sly that cut my hair. read more
