The food and coffee are great. But as a fairly liberal person, I'm torn between the cost of the products and giving their workers a livable wage. I particularly felt nickeled and dimed when I asked for a cold brew with less ice and was charged a dollar more. This place is a treat, so I don't come often but the prices seem to soar every time I come in. They're fairly transparent in explaining why they charge what they charge. I'm content with being an irregular customer as I can't justify being a regular with some of the prices of these menu items. read more

A bit pricey but super delicious! I got a vegan build your own sandwich on focaccia with cheese, garlic mayo, tofu, and onion jam. The onion jam was delicious but just left me wanting to try to the tomato jam! I also got the donuts! The thing I like best about Smackdab donuts is that the cinnamon and sugar one tastes like a cider mill donut which has been impossible to find vegan! My husband and I were intrigued to go here after seeing there gorgeous breakfast sandwiches on Yelp. We went for ourselves and got just simple egg sandwiches and they were phenomenal. They look small, but they pack a punch and I got fuller than I thought I would. The only annoying thing is that upon check-in on Yelp, I was eligible for the coupon of $5 and a boat of donuts. Looking online, their donuts looked delish. We got there about 12:30 on a random Thursday and they were sold out of all of their donuts. I'm not sure how and why they didn't have anymore for the lunch time people, but this was pretty frustrating since we got ourselves excited to try a couple flavors. Even just one. We're from out of town on a little vacation, and I was looking somewhere that offered vegan donuts along with a brunch menu. Hands down the best vegan donuts I've ever had: they're actually deep-fried cake donuts (most vegan donuts aren't deep-fried for some reason??) and all three varieties were delicious. My happy camper latte was perfect, and I also built my own vegan breakfast sandwich-- love the savory jam! There are also plenty of non-vegan options, so my non-vegan partner was happy, too. Disappointing to say the least. Late, missing food. I was hungry and ordered food from Smack Dab. I waited till well after the latest estimation time and the driver eventually turned up late. I opened the bag and the green eggs and jam, flax bread, and tomato jam were all missing. I called Smack Dab and told them, asking if there might be an extra bag the driver forgot. The staff person said they would send out the two items. Sounded fine, mistakes happen. But then, I got a call back saying that the owner insists they packed the bag themselves and that those items were there, basically insinuating I was lying. Very unpleasant customer service. I told them the bag was stapled, so they can't blame the driver for taking anything out. They continued to tell me the owner says everything was there. I asked to speak to them. The owner refused. So, I paid my hard-earned money to get a hot breakfast sandwich, plus delivery fee, plus tip and I now had no money, no breakfast, and was treated like I was a liar. It was upsetting. Suddenly I had to somehow prove I was not lying & beg for my food. They said the owner decided they were too busy now, so they couldn't deliver my food after all. They refused to redeliver which is what I wanted. They said they didn't have any more time to talk, would be in touch with the owner's email address, and hung up on me as I was saying "Please don't hang up on me". Grubhub had to intervene and the restaurant refused a full refund, allowing only the items missing. As anyone who orders delivery knows, this now means you need to re-pay for delivery & tip, wait another hour from somewhere else, hoping you get food instead of accusations, and eat at a totally different time than the rest of your household. In my opinion, a good business should have apologized and resent the food promised. I hope they realize this when they find the missing food later today, or that someone else at least enjoyed the items if they were put into another bag by mistake. I felt humiliated, hungry and ripped off. read more

Literally the cutest little hole in the wall I've ever encountered. Their tofu sandwiches are soooooo good and their vegan donuts slap. I do wish when doing an online order you could pick your donut flavor, but that's my only critical feedback. So happy a friend introduced us to this place. Update: I cannot say enough good things about this Cafe. They serve Halfwit coffee, some solid breakfast fare and on the weekends they do pizza. Everything they make /sell has some sort of gluten free and or vegan consideration and it all tastes great. When the cafe first started out, their espresso drinks were good but pretty basic. However, they've kept their basics and added in some great, creative drink and food options. In particular, I'd recommend the Honey Bear latte which comes with a pleasant amount of sweet and a dash of spice. They also do great donuts like s'mores chai, horchata, or classic cinny sugar. Aside from the food and drink though, this organization is super invested in the local scene. I've lived in the neighborhood for 8 years and have been them make a dedicated effort to being a part of the community and being as inclusive as possible. To say they are LGBTQIA+ inclusive is not enough. They are an exemplar for other places to follow, especially with the support and outreach I've seen them do for the trans community (among others). My only gripe with the place is the overall small and awkward size of their cafes. Part of this is the space they are working with and I'll admit that Metropolis will remain my favorite Chicago coffee. But that being said, I respect the hell out of this place and can assure you that every penny you spend here ( it is a tad pricey-er) stays in the community and is worth it. read more

Service was incredible, food was insane, and we got free donuts to boot. I asked for help ordering- there were too many awesome vegan options. Staff steered me towards the hash bowl w tofu scramble and focaccia toast, then gave me a free vegan donut since it was my first visit. The potatoes were gorgeously seared and seasoned. If you live in this hood you already know that Smack Dab is your place for LGBTQ friendly vibes and the best biscuit breakfast sandwich you can get. My partner grabbed a ten dollar New York style pie on Friday night and it blew my mind. It can be hard to find a good New York slice in Chicago but SmackDab has it and in a gluten free option as well! After eating that pizza I had to stop in for a sandwich and donut and I was not surprised to find the green eggs and jam. This sandwich comes with a beautiful greens omelette, sweet caramelized onion jam, and a creamy green pesto. Insanely good! We also had the chai which was ginger heavy and very spicy, which we loved! I was inspired to go here after going to the grocery store for a coffee cake, expecting company, and then looking at the generic thing in my hands packed with preservatives sitting on the shelf for who knows how long thinking "I'm going to give this to my guest, my two year old, and probably eat the leftovers all week?" I put it back on the shelf, looked for bakeries in my neighborhood, and found this place a few blocks from my house. What a breath of fresh (doughnut-scented) air, and worth the trip! A friendly and genuine human greeted me when I walked in, told me about the three delectable coffee cake varieties they make and had ready: Gluten-free and vegan double chocolate pepita bread, vegan berry swirl coffee cake, and conventional cinnamon swirl coffee cake. I got one of each. I also got a sampling of the three donut varieties they make each day, which I think were said to be vegan or GF too. I joked that the only other thing I needed was half and half (I intended to go to the grocery for a liter), and they earnestly tried to find a way to fulfill that with what they had. Much appreciated and good for a warm-hearted laugh! I'll definitely be going back as frequently as I can find an excuse to do so. Obsessed doesn't even cover it. We've been eating at Smack Dab since they were just a pop-up at a bar in Rogers Park. We love the owners and the staff. I don't care how long the line is, I will always wait. The egg sandwiches are so bomb and what I would recommend your first time trying them out. We have transitioned to a vegan diet and it's as if Smack Dab transitioned at the same time to off even more delicious and diverse options. We love the vegan hash and fried rice for brunch. And of course the delish donuts and variety of coffee drinks. They have a great selection of bakery goods that I always bring to parties or just grab to enjoy later at home. We just tried their new dinner options. We had the vegan nachos and the vegan sausage pizza. HOLY BALLS! They can do no wrong. We just increased our weekly visits to at least twice a week. read more

I tried this place for the first time today and ordered their breakfast biscuit (the best seller one) and a latte made with oat milk. The space is very cute but seating is limited so be wary if you go during peak hours if you are going with others. Now to review the food - since that's what most people care about - AMAZING. The biscuit was so soft and the egg was really great on its own. But the star of the sandwich was the bacon jam. It was incredibly flavorful and made the entire sandwich come together! I am docking a star simply because of the limited milk choices for the latte (whole milk or oat milk). I would definitely give this place a go and I will 100% be back to try the donuts one day :) read more

My husband and I tried Smack Dab for the first time today, and we will definitely be back! I had their veggie scramble which was a lot more food than I expected and was very full afterwards. I think the meal was perfect when paired with the buttery biscuit and roasted tomato jam! I was hesitant about the ham but it proved me wrong and was delicious! My husband had the bestest seller, which he thought was absolutely amazing and also a lot of food that left him full. We both had a blood orange donut while we waited for our meal and that was also a great decision! My only issue was the prices were a little steep, so it wouldn't be something I would be able to grab every weekend. However, I would absolutely go in and grab a biscuit ($3) and make my own sandwich with that at home! Highly recommend, and a place I would absolutely go back to! read more
