Pro: I think they are the only restaurant in Chicago that advertises "We only cook with rice bran oil, sesame oil or olive oil--no canola, corn or soy oil ever!" So for that they stand out already. Pro: all the sandwiches tasted great. Con: They messed up the order a lot. I asked if any of the donuts were yeasted or if they were all cake donuts. The guy told me they were all yeast donuts. But when we got them they were clearly cake and the receipt said "three cake donuts." The kitchen seemed to mess up my order as well. The receipt correctly said I was supposed to get the gluten free corn bread. But it looked like I got the biscuit bread that the sandwich normally comes with. I'll post a picture. Ordered a 12oz golden latte. They gave us a 16oz one and charged us for it too. Con: The make your own sandwiches were a small half sandwich and there was no way to know on the menu. Pro: the price for the half sandwiches is only $6.50. For high quality ingredients that's a good price. With all the mistakes I would have normally given a worse review. But because there's really no competitor in the Chicago area for a restaurant that uses this quality of ingredients I'm giving it a higher rating. Hope they clean up their mistakes. read more

During the pandemic it has been challenging and Smack Dab is a very small operation with a small outside seating area. We ordered outside though our mobile phones the green eggs and jam biscuit , donuts and a latte. It took longer to get our order as they do quite a take out business. I wanted to get a boat of donuts but I didn't just want to be stuck with cinnamon donuts. The barista instead offered me a cinnamon donut and a gluten free chocolate chip cookie. When the staff praises how good the cookie are, trust them. This cookie satisfied me a bit more than the donut did. As per usual, I did get a coffee on the side. In total, I was here for about an hour and forty minutes catching up on journaling. A relaxing spot to get some work done and catch up with friends. Smack Dab is a 1 minute walk from the CTA 22 bus stop. Very friendly staff and great art hangs on their walls. While I was sitting there, it was great to hear staff greeting some of their customers on a first name basis. They do have food choices here which I would like to try the next time I'm in. VISIT TWO: I tried 'The Classic' which was their egg biscuit sandwich with mayo. Although it was plain and simple, it was delicious. SO GOOD. I couldn't pass up their chai donut, so I went for it. I'll be honest, i feel like it is a bit pricey compared to _amount_ of food but it sure was freaking delicious. We had one of their breakfast sandwiches with the home made biscuits and we were very pleasantly surprised at the taste. It was simply perfect and there was no spillage of anything inside the sandwich (like many other sandwiches). The donuts were also very good, i personally tried and loved their cinnamon one. I did order a Latte but I guess my order got lost somewhere (since it was VERY busy) and didn't get it until after i had finished my sandwich, which was a bit of a shame. Whoa! I love the full-serve version of the pop-up, especially with the expanded menu! They've got bagels, scrambles, and now you can add ham off the bone to your sandwich! I definitely did that, getting my classic biscuit sandwich with the chive bar mayo, bacon jam, and ham. It was fantastic. Very kind people. It was the first time I had ever been there. They greeted me and I felt welcome right away. After reading about Smack Dab on Eater Chicago's "Essential Sandwiches to Try", we decided to give it a go. Who doesn't love a good breakfast sandwich on a Sunday morning? Smack Dab do NOT disappoint. We ordered two items: the Best Seller and one of the weekend specials, a Breakfast Torta. The sandwiches arrived quickly (the restaurant estimated an hour, food was here in 30 minutes) and they were hot and delicious. The delivery driver even called to confirm where to drop off the food (we have a weird building--most delivery folks leave the food at the wrong spot). The Best Seller deserves its name; the biscuit was flaky, the eggs were perfectly seasoned, the bacon jam gave a sweet smokiness, and the garlic chive mayo brought a nice herbaceous note. My partner had the Breakfast Torta, which was full of soy chorizo, egg, and cheesy goodness. It was also enormous! I was super impressed with everything, and will absolutely be keeping Smack Dab in the breakfast rotation. Hit it up if you haven't yet. read more

I cannot put into words how obsessed I am with this place. I absolutely adore Smack Dab, and for so many reasons! I have celiac disease, which can make going out to eat tricky. Smack Dab has SO many options for me, and I've never been even a little disappointed by anything I've ordered. Everything is always super savory and flavorful, and you can tell that they take dietary restrictions seriously, which is something I really appreciate. The veggie hash and breakfast sandwiches are my go-to orders, always with their incredible garlic-chive mayo. The staff is also just fantastic. Everyone always seems so happy and eager to help; it seems like they really care about their employees, which is super important to me. I order delivery quite frequently and it's always nice to see the little thank you notes and coupons they include with these orders. Add free parking in a private lot, and I just might be a customer for life. It was a little hard to find Smack Dab. I had to call my friend when I overshot it, driving north on Clark Street. Smack Dab is located jin a little strip mall ust south of the McDonald's at the corner of Pratt and Clark. That strip mall location means free, private parking. Yay! You don't see that much in Rogers Park. Inside, I didn't even get a chance to ask if there were any vegan treats -- because there are lots, and they are displayed proudly. I had a flight of three vegan donuts (I uploaded a photo). They don't look big, but they are dense. I ate them over three days. I also purchased a vegan coffeecake to take with. I still haven't finished it. Not because it's bad, but because it is dense and moist. I can only eat a few bites before I'm full. Thank goodness it keeps in the refrigerator. Smack Dab also offers egg sandwiches and non-vegan treats, so you can take your carnist and vegetarian friends here, too. I didn't explore that part of the menu at all. I only know it exists. Smack Dab offers oat milk for their non-dairy creamer. I tried it. Skip it. Like so many fake milks, it kind of diffuses in the coffee, then dissolves into nothingness. The coffee is better black. They do have some kind of loyalty program, but I didn't get the details. When we were leaving, Purple Grandma showed me that she was at 8 of 10 visits that would qualify her for something. Sorry -- you can check it out yourself once you become a regular customer. I didn't realize I missed donuts till I had them at Smack Dab. I highly recommend this hole in the wall bakery and café, especially because vegans get a selection here. read more

Id been eyeing this place for a while and finally went here to grab a quick breakfast with a friend and it was great! We went around 8:30 so it was earlier and quieter and we got seating. By 10 there was a line and not as much seating since it is on the smaller side space wise. Nonetheless that didn't seem to deter people's enjoyment of their food and drinks. My friend got the biscuit sandwich and I got the cornbread. We also both got cinnamon donuts which were so good. We both thoroughly enjoyed everything and the staff was super friendly, we got coffee to go as we were leaving and told the barista to surprise us and we were not disappointed! This place is a little hidden gem in Roger's Park. My cousin, who had been here before, suggested we go here for brunch, although we arrived there at noon on a Wednesday. Luckily the place was not packed because I brought my 10 month old son with me. We were able to get a seat inside with a high chair. There's limited tables inside but they do have more tables outside. The high chair, by the way, came with a tray - other moms would probably think that's a bonus feature! I had the Lox and Bagel. It came out already prepared and was delicious. My cousin had an egg sandwich, which she devoured. We did want to try the Mac and Cheese but was told they only sell that at dinner and/or weekends.
