This place is pretty on "point." They have your standard café fair, but what I really enjoy is all the window light coming into the space. It's great in the mornings. I come here usually before or after church on Sundays, so it's a part of my routine. The staff is always super courteous and prompt, but not the most gregarious. Maybe they're just woefully under-caffeinated? The popovers alone are worth a visit, for sure. They are big, light, fluffy, and sugary. The coffee is delicious, and although I've yet to try the sandwiches, they've been constant distractions every time I've visited. I did get to try the Chocolate Orange Pinwheel (raw, vegan), which is the perfect afternoon treat. I'm also a huge fan of the teapot option: try the honey ginseng green tea if you can! While seating can be scarce on beautiful weekends, it's really worth it if you can nab a coveted spot (all the better if it's near an outlet). After reading/hearing several raving reviews about this, I decided to check out this gem on a Sunday afternoon. This coffee shop is truly a perfect fit in downtown Providence on Westminster St. It has nice decor, high ceiling, cute and catchy sign and a complete variety of coffee, food and dessert. I didn't get to try the food or dessert, just coffee. My first impression of the place was everyone has his/her laptop sitting by the window and I felt bad that I just wanted to chat all day long with my husband (poor thing). But talking at a normal volume didn't seem to make people turn heads or stare me down. So ladies, feel free to get a table and talk away. I ordered a Chai Latte but they "ran out". I asked how long it would take to make one they said 5... 10... 15 minutes... (with an annoyed face like really, did you really want me to make that for you?) Since they didn't say no but offered to make a new pot, I decided to wait for them to brew a new pot. After my anxious 15 minute wait, I sadly found the Chai Latte to be watery. I didn't ask for skim milk but maybe because it was a fresh pot, it wasn't "brewed and stewed" as long as they would like. Really, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if you said "we don't have chai latte anymore" and I would order something else. But when you commit to making it, I expect it to be good! Maybe I caught the staff during a late Sunday afternoon but they looked like they had a long day and had already checked out. Parking is very tough around there. I circled around the block 2-3 times to find a parking spot. If you run out of patience quickly like me, consider parking your car few blocks away and walk over to Westminster. I am reviewing my experience from when they had just opened. Summary: Scattered. I ordered a coffee siphon, which was fumbled by the owner (man) for lack of experience. Advice: You have to figure these things out before opening. Since it was fumbled he offered to make another the next time I came in -on the house. Nice enough. I went about 5 miles out of my way to visit again the next day. Went in and only his wife was working and said he was out walking around downtown. I explained I came for a make-up siphon. She didn't know about what had happened (I guess didn't believe me) so she allowed me to wait until his return. I got bored and walked around downtown myself, I was about to leave after having wasted 20 minutes already when I saw the other owner (man). I walked over to him and explained I came back for the siphon. He asked if I could wait 5 minutes until he got back. I said sure thing. I went back into the cafe and waited about 10 minutes before he shows up. I've been sitting around waiting for about half an hour by now. Here's where it gets worse... Instead of making my coffee I've been waiting 30 minutes for, he runs to the back room to make doughnut batter. When he returns from getting batter, he decides to make donuts for everyone. At this point I'm thinking this guy must have forgotten somehow, so I walk up in front of the doughnut machine so he sees me and hopefully has an epiphany. Eventually, at his own leisure, he made the siphon. I sat down with my coffee. Meanwhile another couple had ordered a French Press. The owner (woman) sat it down at the couple's table with a timer and said something to the effect of letting it sit for 3 or 4 more minutes. What? Three OR four? What's the point of the timer? A minute of difference can make the coffee taste completely different! I hope things have gotten better because I haven't been back. read more

Totally unwelcoming! I visited this cafe for the first time yesterday morning. I followed a few other customers in. As the came in and approached the counter, the man and woman working the counter greeted the other customers warmly. When it was my turn, the staff talked to each other while making the items for the other guests. I waited patiently. The woman took my order after waiting about 5 mins. As I waited everyone including others that came in after me got their food. The gentleman behind the counter gossiped and chatted with the other woman. Never saying, you food will be coming up shortly or anything. Finally, I see toast pop up. It has to be mine because everyone else has been served. The man kept chatting and chatting and chatting. I had to point out to him that my toast was ready. He ROLLED his eyes at me and slowly walked over to prepare my food. He slowly prepared it and then placed it on the counter near me with a look of disgust on his face and walked away. I'm still not sure what I did to deserve such awful customer service. Maybe this guy has a thing against people of color. That was the only difference I could see between me and the other customers. I'm not trying to figure it out. I will never be back. I told the hotel that recommended me to eat here about my experience also. read more

Ah this place is so great! They introduced me to sunflower butter on an egg sandwich and spicy dark hot chocolate. Not my favorite latte in the city, but I've never had a bad meal or bad service here. You do have to bus your own so I wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for a fancy sit down meal. read more

Amazing experience! This is a place that does everything right. I work in a coffee shop and I frequent a lot of cafes whenever I have time, and this is exactly the atmosphere I want to spend my time chilling/working in. DRINKS are pretty great. Although they don't do exquisite latte art, the flavor of their espresso drinks acheived the perfect balance between the sweetness of heated (but not burned) milk and the well-balanced sweetness, acidity, and slight bitterness of the expresso. It is refreshing and delicious. FOOD is also really great. We got the egg and cheese croissant, a cinnamon bun, and a yoghurt parfait. Honestly, everything was GREAT. The egg and cheese in the croissant was freshly made and doesn't look like one of those egg patties that are served in many cafes. The warm cheese keeps the croissant and the eggs together, so it is not messy and difficult to eat. The cinnamon bun was fresh and just the right amount of sweetness. The yoghurt parfait has so many fruits in it, with the perfect amount of granola and yoghurt. The presentation of everything was incredible too! If I lived in Providence, I would come here as often as I could. I will def go again if I visit! read more

I come to Small Point Café quite a lot. Being a student I love love love to come to Small Point to attempt to get my work done in a peaceful & relaxing environment. The coffee is amazing. The workers are friendly and welcoming & the food is fresh. The iced lattes are always refreshing (they are my personal favorite) and if your lucky enough, the hot cappuccino's are topped with a foam mosaic artwork that is likely to impress everyone around you. Also try out the NAE NAE toast if you find yourself always craving a simple yet totally satisfying avocado toast recipe. If you come to Small Point on a Saturday or Sunday with a group of people looking to escape distractions and get work done- be aware that you may not all find seating. It gets super busy in the middle of the day and unfortunately becomes hard to find seating arrangements. Even though you may think you were the first to think of Small Point Café as the best place to chill and accomplish some amount of work- its likely half of the providence area students are thinking the same thing. read more

Seating is hard to find when they are busy, but it seems to turn over fairly quickly so you shouldn't have to wait too long for a spot. This place is so cute and I love the illustrations in the seating area. The menu is on a chalkboard right behind the counter so it's easy to spot. I am on a cafe adventure and my goal is to visit every cafe in the state of Rhode Island, maybe the country perhaps the world. I did some local business and I yelped cafe's and Small Point made its way to my view. It was within walking distance. It was a very hip vibe with music that was a bit strange. Their atmosphere was funky and somewhat disjointed. I like the funky - what was disjointed was they had a wall with political postings and drawings. I thought it was strange. For a cafe that has some of the best coffee in the area, why would they side-trail into political meanderings? Focus on what you're good at - create a sense of unity centered around the almighty bean and steer clear from childish drawings. I won't post them - they are silly. Well as far as their coffee - it was as crisp and clear as you get. Medium black is the ultimate test..and Small Point gets an A+. One of their gluten free bars caught my eye. Their peanut butter with sea salt - made with organic granola was a wonderful addition to their A+ coffee. Thanks guys. read more

My husband and I stopped in here on a hot day to grab iced coffee since we live right down the street. I'm not sure if it was because it was a little later in the morning (around noon), but the coffee tasted old and watery. It almost tasted like tea (?). Happened across Small Point when my grandma was visiting and we needed something quick and light for dinner. Got in right before closing, and the owner was kind enough to let us sit and enjoy our sodas and sandwiches. Big points right off the bat -- nice staff. The food is solid. Nothing too fancy. Breakfast sandwiches available, rotating selection of two types quiche, a soup or two, about four different lunchy sandwiches (come w tortilla chips). There's a selection of scones, croissants, cookies, etc available. You get the idea. I bought a cranberry pecan scone once, delicious. Crumbly and buttery, with what looked like bits of cornmeal in there for a little added texture. Nice. I've had a couple egg and cheese sandwiches on english muffin with tomato and spinach there. Once the egg was undercooked, but overall they're nice. The coffee and espresso: Excellent. Probably the best latte I've had in the city. Pour-over, French press, and regular drip coffee available. Don't waste your time with the cafe au lait -- It tasted weak and watery. Go for either regular coffee or the caffe latte. Tea: haven't tried it. Available by cup or pot. Free wi-fi, couches and tables available. Great for work, casual meetings, or a coffee date. Again, the staff is nice. They're honest too, which I really appreciate. Told me honestly that they order their baked goods from a bakery in Mass. (I think -- I can't remember the town) and they don't really prepare food (soup, quiche) in-house. That's totally fine, esp when they admit it. Zero-waste establishment, which is really cool, but wouldn't make me go if the coffee was bad. Final verdict: get yourself to Small Point, enjoy a latte, and use the bathroom while you're there. You won't regret it. read more

Visited 13/10/14. My latte tasted excellent but Providence offers great coffee in a number of places. That's where the excellence ended though. The man who served me was pretty rude. When I received my "for here" latte in a paper cup I asked if it was supposed to come in a real cup. He looked at me like I was crazy handed me a cup and didn't say a word. Great little spot in the heart of downtown providence it filled with college life it has a bit of a rustic charme which fit the setting real well the food is great I hade the super nova tasted delicious could not complain and their drinks are great as well I my favorite is iced vanilla chai! Great location, although I can see parking being problematic on a busy weekday. Ordered an iced Americano, and it was "meh" made with too much water, which rendered it lacking in flavor and it was lukewarm, not ice cold. For iced Americanos I prefer that the espresso be poured over the ice first, more ice added, then topped off with ice cold water. The interior is very comfortable, wifi is fast, and there are plenty of places to plug a laptop into. Looks like a great place going through growing pains, so I'm sure to give it another try. Its been a few months since I've been there so things may have changed for the better. I wish they were open a little earlier and stayed open a little later. read more

Love this place! I've lived so close to it and never had the time to actually stop in but I'm glad I finally did. Great atmosphere, decor, and plenty of seating options such as tables, booths, and couches. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food is fresh and the the drinks are good. This coffee shop stands its own amongst the numerous coffee shops in town. First of all it's hours are longer and so you will find yourself more productive doing work here. It has many specialty flavor coffees, such as turmeric ginger, rosemary, brown sugar coffee etc, so you won't run out of options. The baked goods are delicious as well. They serve a great cup of coffee and I really like the cold brew. I'm giving it three stars because it can be really disorganized. Sometimes I will have two or three people taking my order at the same time but then I will have to wait a really long to actually receive my order. It doesn't seem like they use their staff efficiently. I've also had staff take my order, then take orders from everyone behind me and forget to ring me up. I've always wanted to stop by in here and finally did. Great atmosphere when you walk in, almost like a small underground NYC cafe. Pretty simple menu with most typical coffee shop items. I was disappointed in the sanitation of the cafe. As I walked in, I witnessed one of the employees crack an egg, and throw the shell to the trash can. He missed the trash can, and the egg shell rolled out from the kitchen area, to in front of the counter and sat in front of the drink fridge until he came and picked it up. When I made my order, the man at the counter took my money with gloves on, and then proceeded to finish a customers breakfast sandwich with the same gloves on. As well as I am not fully confident that he had changed his gloves from touching the raw egg shell he had dropped on the floor. The coffee station was also filthy. The counter was dirty and needed to be wiped down, as well as there was a small bin insert in the counter for silverware that did not have any sanitizer in it, and was just there and full. I also did not see anyone come out to the dining area and wipe down the tables after customers had gotten up and left. It's a shame that such poor sanitation will effect my decision to come back to such a place. read more

Lovely little cafe in downtown that is great for studying, reading, or general internet trolling. I had the cold brewed coffee, which was wonderful (next time I'm trying the Mexican Mocha!) and I ate the tomato, pesto, mozzarella sandwich, which was absolutely amazing. It was fresh, and the pesto was some of the best. The menu had a great variety of items to choose from, including all day breakfast- which next time, I'm definitely going to give a go. I really loved this place. Very cute inside, unique. The food was good, I got the Na-Na toast which was sourdough bread, balsamic, avocado spread, and cucumbers. Coffee was good. Seating however was horrendous. There are tables but you got 1 person at each big table with a laptop and they sit there for hours. We were standing for 25 mins waiting to sit, holding our food... and once a table finally became available, people would flock to the table to get it first. It was very aggravating. This café was super quaint and located in the center of Providence. The lattes all looked so good, but I only had lunch. The chicken salad sandwich was delicious. They make it in house and added some great spices for flavor. I added bacon because that's just what I do, and had it on their scrumptious sourdough bread. Or you can come here, wait 10 minutes for a breakfast sandwich, wait another 10 for your coffee, confirm they've forgotten your coffee, finally get the coffee, and eat the sandwich cold. Ravenous for breakfast I wandered into Small Point and ended up with a big bowl of yogurt and granola with fruit and a latte. While the latte tasted a bit bitter, I was pleased with the overall effect of the combo and the enjoyable surrounds. On a second visit, I warmed up with a cup of oatmeal (they have some tasty varieties) and a tea. The tea lineup is impressive with a selection of green, black and herbal (if for some reason you're skipping the buzz.)
