Weird experience at this place. I cannot comment on the food because we didn't get any after 40 minutes of waiting. Tried to order a pie to eat in. Blonde haired woman took our order but seemed weird about it. Went back to the counter to see if it was done after watching other tables getting a pie. Blonde haired woman ignoring... so sat and waited. Went back again after waiting and asked a different woman. I love it here. One of the only spots in the hill with their own parking lot (no valet). All of the food is so good. Italian food staples, to a plethora of desserts. They also have a bar, and plenty of seating. Staff is always friendly and the owner is an amazing guy! Def worth any traffic on the hill. read more

This is an Italian style market and grocery store in Federal Hill, close to Venda and Tony's. The three of them compete for shoppers looking for the best quality and best deal on Italian meats, prepared foods, groceries and pastries. I have been here many times and even though is the smallest of the three neighborhood markets, they do have a good selection of items that can easily be enjoyed at a picnic somewhere in the vicinity of our city. parking can be difficult here, but take my advice and park on a side street and enjoy the walk it's on a beautiful street! I ordered a too good to go bag from here and when i walked inside i was immediately greeted and the staff is super nice and interacted with my son which i always love and appreciate. Roma has been open since 1983, and for good reason as their pastries are outstanding! I grew up on Sfogliatelle and they have some of the best I've ever had -- super crunchy and flaky exterior, with a light and creamy filling that has the perfect hint of candied orange. I pride myself on being a cannoli connoisseur and I have to say that their cannoli is some of the best I've ever had. I was worried because they don't fill them on the spot, but rather they're prefilled in the case; however, the shell was still super crunchy and fresh, and the filling was silky with only a slight grain from the ricotta. I also appreciate that they don't put chocolate chips in the filling. Staff was super friendly in this quaint little shop. You can also get breads, canned sauces, and other Italian provisions. Love his place! To celebrate some of St. Jospeph's Day, I bought a traditional zeppole ($3.25). It was very good as the custard was so tasty with a hint of lemon and the dough was light and perfectly fried. I also got an eclair ($3) and a slice of their Siclian style pizza ($2.50). The eclair was a steal for $3, one of the best I've ever had! It felt like it weighed 2 pounds and the chocolate ganache frosting was out of this world. The slice of pizza was huge and the tomato sauce was the best part. It was simple, fresh and perfectly sweet. My only complaint is that the bottom wasn't crispy at all. I've made Sicilian style pizza from scratch, (sfincione), and the crust is crispy while keeping the dough light and airy. Also, their Sicilian bread loaf is unreal. $4 for their smaller one but it's still enormous. I've seen other bakeries have that quality and size for $6 or more. It's becoming my favorite place on the hill. They have everything such as prepared food, bomb sandwiches Italian grocery products, pastries, bread, pizza, etc. So much more affordable than Tony's Colonial and very well priced in general. read more

Went to Federal Hill for Columbus Day Festival and got couple slices pizza from Roma. They were so good but then needed a cannoli. Well I looked at reviews and Roma had good ones so I went in and got 2 cannolis. Am I ever glad they were the best cannolis I have ever had. They were full all the way through which is unusual. Cute little local Italian shop on the famous Atwells Ave. There's no shortage of Italian places there but this shop has a local feel with reasonable prices. I had their calzone but it looked more like a Stromboli to me. Whatever its called it was delicious with broccoli rabe, cheese, and Italian deli meats. I don't know how this place gets such great reviews.???? I went in and order the chicken Parm sandwich, and it was the literally worst driest hard, cold grossest, chicken palm sandwich I've ever had. It wasn't even edible. I thought they gave me the plastic display by mistake and couldn't believe it. The chicken, must've been at least seven days old. This used to be my everyday spot for several years (hence the large # of check-ins). That being said, I no longer come here at all. The last few visits were really disheartening. It is clear that an unnamed cashier no longers wants to work here. Her terrible attitude and lack of care about order accuracy or patron happiness has become more and more evident. In addition to purchasing my own lunch here for years, I always filled my firm's orders (for misc. legal society lunches) here at Roma. On my last visit, they left out one of the subs, but still charged our account for it. When I returned, I was made to wait for over 30 minutes for the missing item and then when I finally received it, they refused to let me leave w/o REPAYING for the sandwich. I showed the receipt (which isn't itemized) and explained ~ via this crazy concept called math ~ how we hadin fact already been charged. As I was now 20 minutes late for the firm's lunch event, I just paid (again) and left. I will not be returning here in the future. Federal Hill doesn't need these 80s type attitudes. It's struggling enough with the times and disgruntled and rude employees will put you right out of business. read more

I wanted to love Roma so much but I've given them too many shots at this point. The food is usually pretty good (I always get subs or pizza) but the service is terrible. I've probably ordered 5 or 6 times since I moved to the neighborhood and every time I've waited 20-40 minutes past my assigned pickup time. Today I showed up with 2 minutes left in my pickup window and they hadn't even started making my order - it was just a small pizza. I was told it'll be 10 minutes when I walked in, and they looked busy so I understood. That was until I realized after about 7 minutes that the guy from the deli counter got called over to start making the pizza, from scratch (dough hadn't even been rolled out). They're not understaffed there either, I counted 7 people behind the one counter - 4 were eating while serving customers. A guy who took over my pizza was popping something into his mouth out of his bare hand as he was making it. Icing on the cake: After I finally got the pizza going on 25 minutes late, I get home to find a long black hair baked into the cheese. I'm all set with Roma but really hope they turn it around. I've walked and driven by here a number of times, but never stopped in to check out the place. Thanks to the Lord of the Pies contest I finally did and wasn't disappointed. The thing that stood out the most was how friendly the staff was there. The guy behind the counter started some small talk which evolved into a discussion and the girl in the pastry section soon joined in. You'd think I was a regular not a first timer. The food is definitely worth checking out. My girlfriend and I had pizza, which was actually very good, but they had some amazing looking meats and cheeses, antipasti, and calzones. I couldn't resist the pastry there and ended up with a very tasty eclair and the wine biscuits were really good too. Getting back to the pizza, the crust was very tasty. My experience is if the crust isn't great, chances are the pizza won't be either. The toppings looked and tasted like quality toppings and the wood fired oven just wrapped it all togethr nicely.
