What is up with the horrible atmosphere when walking inside of this particular store? The workers there are terrible! Maybe they hate their jobs, and I can understand if it's the boredom killing them since they barely have any customers... but just their attitudes make me hesitant to walk in to shop there anymore. I've usually liked this store. And I've had 2 good deliveries. But today, a delivery did not arrive, despite the shopper having texted me that she was shopping 5 hours ago. Her call back number was bogus. I called Smart&Final. They said it's up to Shipt. But the online site where I ordered is S&F, as is the payee on my pending credit card charge ($180). So I won't be ordering from them again. And this is a warning to you, too. read more

Really hate going to this place, but it does carry some items which I buy where I can't get elsewhere. You can never find a member of the staff when you need one and when you do, they have no clue as to what you're asking for. Sometimes they are abrupt and make you feel like you're disturbing them so I end up just not asking. After seeing the weekly specials on Tuesday, I drove to this location on Wednesday, during my lunch hour, to buy some vegetables. Unfortunately, none of the items that were on sale were available. Even when the item was available, the prices didn't reflect the sale. I didn't want to walk out empty handed, so I bought some grapes and a pack of zucchini. In terms of size, this place is really tiny compared to the Fremont location. Besides 2 cashiers, there were no one around to help you. I stopped by today to pick up a few items and was pleasantly surprised to see that the store was remodeled. Not only remodeled but clean!! They have also added more items to their inventory, stuff you can only find at a health store such as Sprouts and WF, I found it great! They also have fresh baked chicken, like Rotisserie chicken but baked! It was pretty good too!! My go to S&F is located in Sunnyvale but I'm definitely moving this store to the top of the list. read more

The first time i went here in the winter on what i thought was the coldest day; they had the AC blasting in the store to make it even colder. Thankfully, i filled out the survey and my next visit was much more pleasant. The store is well stocked with your typical buy a gallon of stuff. when their avocados are on special it is a really good deal and I also stocked up on pork tenderloin here now that i am all about brining... yum pig fat!!! I wish they had more organic stuff but again buying cheap bulk the grade of products is down a notch but the pork is top notch. Bonus being next to a Japanese market where you can get sushi to go. read more

One of the few places who will honor tax exempt purchases but it is a hassle since the cashiers have to call a manager to show them how to do practically each time. It is time consuming because they have to delete each taxable amount, manually. I have been hoping that Cosco goes the tax exemption route but to no avail. This store has very good fresh produce better than most regular grocery stores, and also cheaper. Food is stocked early on the weekends and if you go before eight then you will not only get really fresh produce but store are uncrowded before eight. Wow I am super impressed. I had not shopped here in many years but my daughter told me about the remodel and how nice it was now so I gave it a try. The store is beautiful, large and super-organized. There is this girl Paula, Paulo something with heavy Hispanic accent. Today shopping there I checked on a product. The plastic opened or somebody had opened it. So I decided to check and she said are you buying it. I said if it is what I want, she said you opened it, I said I picked it up and it easily opened. Paulo said in my store I make customers buy it if they open it and we don't have return policy. She totally lied, she needs to fix her accent first. I don't get this place. Is it trying to be a Jr. Costco? A resource for restauranteurs? I seriously don't understand the mission of this place and I'm not sure they even know what they're trying to accomplish. I visited Smart & Final twice to really give it a chance. First of all, I couldn't find much I wanted to buy and secondly, I didn't find much that could be considered a savings. I think this chain needs to get its marketing team in one room and make some serious decisions on just what it is this business is trying to be because with Costco close by, I just have no use for Smart & Final. read more

It's not the nicest location that I have been to and the selection isn't great. The worst part was they charged me $5.50 more than they should have on a $20 purchase. Luckily I reviewed my receipt and called them on it. The lady informed me that I needed to look at the price below the item and not above. I stood my ground and she sent her coworker to check. Finally after waiting they finally recognized the erroe and agreed to give me the money back. No apology or anything. Check your receipts because they could be wrong. read more

My family and I moved here from Glendale, CA not too long ago. In Glendale, I have shopped at S&F Extra all the time because its close to our home. I googled S&F as soon as we settled here in Mountain View, but initially, I was disappointed because the one close to our home was not the S&F Extra. I often drive all the way to Sunnyvale to shop for our basic things not offered in Mountain View at the Sunnyvale S&F Extra. The recent upgrade of the S&F to S&F Extra in the Mountain View location is truly amazing. It has been a one stop shopping for my family since, being close to my favorite bakery and pharmacy. Furthermore, its never a problem for me when they run short of sale items because they will kindly issue me a raincheck which they honor for several weeks after the sale date. One of the things I love about the S&F Extra is their reasonable wholesale prices close to Costco pricing, except S&F offers them in smaller portions, well adopted for small family size like mine. One reason why I stopped shopping at Costco years ago was because we discard a lot of food we bought from them. True, the per pound prices in Costco are often lower than a regular Supermarket, but we have to buy in bulk. At a S&F Extra, that's never a problem, we can always buy small portions at wholesale prices. Congratulations to the management and employees for the Grand Re-Opening of the Smart and Final Extra in Mountain View. Such a lame chain! I've spent almost an hour of my time going to a store and loading up on drinks because I've seen one of their ads. My bad for not carefully reading the fine print, but how ridiculous is to have a promotion saying 3 boxes minimum, but 3 boxes max limit? I had a cart full of drinks and I have abandoned it at the register after untrained personnel spent about 10 minutes to figure out why the total is not right, keeping a long line of other customers impatiently waiting. That's because they only had one register opened. So much for saving a buck. Don't make the same mistake. If you're looking to save, that's not the place. Go to Costco, or Safeway. The only place I have found proper popcorn oil (yes, I am an authority on this stuff). Coconut oil has the highest cholesterol available and it is the best for popcorn. Sometimes it feels a bit to ghetto in there for my taste, but I like having access to restaurant supply type goods like packaging. This place fills a niche shopping need for me. It's my store of choice for certain bulk items like 24-packs of individual-sized grape juice or drinks supplies (instant coffee, tea, packs of hot chocolate) for the class I teach. Basically it's where I go for Costco-like needs without the dreadful parking, the hideous lines, or the membership cards and limited member hours at Costco. There's rarely more than one person in line ahead of me. It doesn't have the variety of a gigantic warehouse (though it's big), but it doesn't have Costco's many downsides, either. As for Safeway, they can have very good buys, but I find the bargains more hit-or-miss there, especially when you really do want quantity. Besides buying things for school, I also get things for home that we can't usually find elsewhere, like cases of bottled Mexican Coca Cola made with sugar instead of corn syrup, some non-perishable supplies that we can buy in bulk, or even some perishables that come in large but not ridiculous quantities or in double packs (use one, freeze one). Don't expect to do your family's one-stop shopping here or to get personalized service, and you may find you really like Smart and Final. read more

For me, this store is fairly convenient -- in the same shopping center as a big Walgreens, and next to a Japanese foods store where I occasionally patronise. I'm well aware that for a couple hours (typicaly 3PM-7PM) the cross roads in this area are congested. But I do most of my shopping after 7PM when there is very little congestion in the immediate area. My first experience was about 5 years or so ago when Costco dropped one of my favorite drinks: Langers pure 100% Pomegrante Juice! I don't do:. NO "Juice Drink", NO Pomegrante 'Cocktail', etc. S&F had it for only 10% more than Costco _used to_ have it (but has never again carried it.) About a year ago I added S&F to my regular weekly shopping ring (including Milk Pail, Costco, and Safeway) , and have NEVER had a disappoing experience. About five times during year, I found one or two of my habitual purchases NOT on the shelf. For all but one case, the check-guy up front called someone, at my requst, who fetched a fresh supply of the items from some kind of huge storage facility in back, and replenshied the main shelves The fifth time was an actual depletion of stock of Tropicana Premium OJ, on sale that week for a tiny bit more than half price. And that night was a Tuesday, the last night of the sale, The kindly check-out clerk wrote me a 'Rain Check; It was only his signature and product price and date on a blank area of a advertising flyer. And, Oh, Yes they did honor the rather unorthodox rain check a few days later. S&F is well stocked with most groceries and often much lower prices. In fact I find their bakery offerings to be noticeably more fresh, and better tasting than all but the outrageously more expensive stores. In general their 'store brand' -- First Street -- is the match or berrer of similar competing store (E.g. Safeway, Lucky's, Nob Hill ....) This is a true acount; I am not a 'shill' for this company, and I have nothing against the other grocery chains at all. True, I treasure the monetary savings. read more

The cashiers will literally walk away and adjust carrots if you take too long to get to the register. It might not be the fault of the cashiers but the store lay out. The registers are set up in such a way that if you're medium height, people will be unable to see you when they're in a certain part of the store. So when cashier's walk away to fiddle with shelves, they will not be able to see you. All too often I come up the registers with their lights on and no one in sight to ask for help from. I just want to get it and go, not play hide and seek. read more

Good prices, good selection, but customer service? Ha! A t this store, a few months ago I purchased a large can of tomato puree which the checker put into a single plastic bag. When I exited the store, I decided to carry the bags to the car and leave the cart there. The bag containing the 6 lb. can of puree broke and the can fell onto my sandal-clad foot, splitting the skin and badly bruising a toe. As I stood there bleeding profusely, the checker "Manager Stan" walked out. My daughter called attention to what had happened and he responded "That's too bad," and started to walk away. She asked him if we could get some ice. He pointed to a machine containing 20 lb. bags of ice and said "there's some" and kept walking. I hobbled to the car and attempted to slow the flow of blood with tissues while my daughter returned the cart. She met "Manager Stan" returning to the store; he asked if we had found ice. She said no and a few minutes later he returned to our car with a plastic bag containing a few pieces of ice and said "here." That's all. I wrote to S&F corporate to complain and received a letter and phone calls from corporate employees who assured me that I would be hearing from the district manager soon. A month later, after attempts on my part to reach him, I finally received a phone call. His final comment was that he would speak with the employee and "thanks for your call." The end. I'm not sure what I expected, but certainly some concern (maybe even a 25-cents off coupon!) - not necessarily for what turned out to be a minor injury - but for the attitude of the store employee. I've worked for many years in customer- and client-facing positions and would never treat anyone in such a casual, uncaring manner. read more

Just had the most unbelievable example of poor customer service at Smart and Final. The store manager refused to honor a sales price. I wanted 4 cases of Gaderade, the store only had one. I asked if I could get 6 12 packs at the sales price. He said NO and just walked away. I also walked away from my completely full cart! They are not smart and that is my final time shopping there! read more

A nice resource for odd things at a reasonable price. Lots of oversized disposable serving items and BIG containers of "industrial" foodstuffs. I've always found the service to be good. When I called to find malt, the person who answered the phone knew they carried it, volunteered to check stock before I asked and when he came back to the phone was able to tell me the size and the price even though I hadn't requested that information initially. This is specialty store for big and cheap and does a credible job of it, though the prices aren't always the best. read more

This is a nice store except for two problems. First, it is in a horrible spot for easy automobile access. The Grant and El Camino Real corner is always heavily congested, and it is difficult to both enter and exit the parking lot. 2nd, they never seem to have enough checkers to handle the volume of customers in the store. I would suggest that you go instead to the Smart and Final at Fremont and Mary in Sunnyvale. read more
