My partner and I went to Smart & Final looking for patties, and unfortunately we had a really uncomfortable experience with an employee named Joe. He's a tall guy who walked by, grabbed our cart, and slammed it to the side without even saying "excuse me." It came off extremely rude and disrespectful. We decided to report the situation to management because there was no reason for us to be treated that way. While speaking to the manager, Joe started yelling at her and loudly talking about us within earshot, making the situation even more uncomfortable and unprofessional. Customer service and basic respect go a long way. We were simply shopping and did not deserve to be treated like that. Very disappointing experience. read more

We already like Smart & Final in Pleasant Hill, CA, but after a long, hot, active day, we stopped to pick up some staples. My girlfriend also wanted some batteries, and the chipper, upbeat Eliza, our cashier, got a couple cartons from the locked case via the manager. We thanked her and she replied in the most cheery, genuine voice, "That's just part of my job." Eliza's response said it all, made us happy and proud to shop at Smart & Final. Eliza's easy smile and knowing manner would grace any organization. So often, employees at other stores only reply with a sullen, dispirited "No problem." Eliza should be a training coach. I've been shopping at Smart & Final for several years and never thought about reviewing this great store, so this is way overdue. Why I started shopping here is because the prices are similar to the big box stores and I can get in an out of the store in less than an hour. The meats are fresh, produce as well and they have a great selection of dairy and frozen foods. With food prices continually going up, Smart & Final really has some great sales and every day low prices. I also have their app on my iphone and they even have digital coupons for their special value deals. For a smaller store, the selection of foods is quite extensive. The employees are friendly and always polite and professional. I would say like other stores, I avoid Mondays as some of the shelves are bare, but you will find constant restocking going on. Out of all the smart and final locations I have been to by far my favorite one to go to is in pleasant hill. Today after work I decided to go grocery shopping since this location always has what I look for. Today while I was in line getting up to pay, myself and the person in front of me overheard a man in front of us complain to the employees manager about the employees. I felt disgusted and disheartened hearing that man going towards the manager to get the employees in trouble for simply speaking their native language and said it was "unprofessional". I find nothing unprofessional about the employee having a conversation of what appeared to something work related. No one should ever have to hear that or get in trouble for simply speaking another language. This situation definitely needs to be handled with more professional courtesy as a shopping customer. read more

On 10/13/24 at 0830 am my elderly parents in their late 70's were shopping early in the morning in that store and they were badly treated by the cashier who was at the counter. My mom is a cancer survivor and my dad don't speak a good English, they were harassed and discriminated. Cashier was throwing their groceries in the cart and was totally disrespectful to my mom. For the past 5 years my parents are frequent buyers but have never experienced such bad attitude towards them. Shame on that person who provided such bad customer service. read more

RUDE CASHIER!!! BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I remember shopping here before and witnessing the same rudeness from their staff. Lo and behold, I would be a victim too! I went to grab a few things I forgot to buy at Safeway. When I got to the counter, cashier ALBERTINA started to ring up my stuff. I noticed that the large store brand item was much more expensive than the branded one so I told her that I'll grab the branded one instead. At that point, she gave me an attitude! It's so noticeable that I asked her "Please don't give me an attitude!" She quickly and loudly replied "I don't have an attitude, you are! Then she started venting to her co-worker and other customers about me as I turned to get my stuff. Whatever happened to treating customers right? Many others have complained of ongoing customer service problem at this store. It's embarrassing!! What's management doing about it?? They should train their staff members about manners and good customer service! It's the life of their business! As soon as I got the item that I wanted, I returned to ALBERTINA. October 22 went in about 730 to buy some apples $.99 pound reached to pick the apples and then realized there's Fugees there's all different apples all mixed up into this one pile but it says $.99 so I tried to pick the Fuji one that I started picking apples two bags for I didn't know. I just figured they were Fuji get up to ring them out. She goes five dollars a pound. I don't know they're $.99 the sign says $.99 to say these are the ones on sale and go through the whole bag and separate them. They're all mixed up this is a joke. I've been to this Smart & Final a couple of times in the last few weeks. I came here to go grocery shopping for Thanksgiving. They have a lot of deals going on but the only thing is most of their items are in bulk or family size so unless you're preparing food for a huge group, it's probably better to go to Safeway. The one thing that did catch my eye was the Lee's Sandwiches Vietnamese Iced Coffee they have in the frozen aisle. I wanted to get it but it just comes with too many. I called and spoke with the male manager to ask if this store had First Street 12 Oz styrofoam cups in stock since the stores in Danville and Pleasanton did not have them. I live in San Ramon and these were the two stores closest to where I live. He said he had 3 left and he would hold 2 of them at the register for me. I met one of the managers this weekend who was friendly and helpful. This manager also explained that during the crisis right now, his family is watching their young one so that he and his wife who also work in the industry can continue to work and not worry about their child being exposed. They are putting themselves out there in public every day and his attitude made me walk away feeling so grateful I met him. I hope you guys know how blessed you are to have staff like this. I have shopped at the Smart & Final in Concord on and off for years. I especially hit them up when I'm getting ready for a party. They have really good prices on most things, but not great meat/produce. I was never blown away with the customer service at the Concord location. I didn't have high expectations and the collective team didn't seem concerned or even trained to exceed customer expectations. Since Covid, I have gained a new respect for S&F. Their relationship with Instacart has made my life so much easier. They offer same-day delivery and usually within a 2-hour window. For example, it's about 1:30p today and I realized I need salted cashews for a chicken curry salad I'm making tonight. Not exactly a pantry item (at least in my house). Not to worry - I jumped on Instacart / Smart & Final, placed my order and it will be here in about 1.5 hours. read more

Why do I love Smart & Final? I have many reasons. I love cooking! You can find a great bargain here for certain items and catch some killer deals on sale. Let's first start off with the how cheap it is to make your own appetizers for parties. I have come to this S&F many times to make a large tray of bean dip. Here is the breakdown for the cost. Beans * Vegetarian* 7lb can ($4.99) Sour Cream 3lb tub ($4.19) Cheese 2lb ($7.99) Total= $17.17 These are the main ingredients needed for a 6/7 layer bean dip. To add the extra layers all you need is onions, tomatoes and olives. If you want to go the extra route you can add guacamole. Do you know how much a very small tiny serving is for bean dip? Let's not mention it will break your pockets and you will have a minimal amount of servings. The drinks selections are also cheaper per unit to pack with a daily lunch. Keep an eye out for the *first street* brand which is always a few dollars cheaper on items and are just as good. I also like picking up whole frozen desserts that do not require to be warmed up. You only need to thaw and serve! Upon check out they have some things that are discounted at a very low price. I love buying paper plates in bulk here, they come in handy during the week when you don't feel like doing the dishes. Smart & Final is always a win for me. The thing I love about Smart and Final is that it's the only place I can find large cans of fruit cocktail, sliced peaches and pineapple chunks in light syrups. They are located in a strip mall along with Bank of America, Rite Aid, Staples, Pet store. I been a customer for years, but now getting around to writing a review. The checkers are always pleasant and nice and their own brand products aka First Street are pretty good....a couple of my favorites are their black olives and any tomato sauce canned products. They open to the public, however, most of their customers are business owners like restaurants/food services and business offices. This is not a Smart & Final EXTRA! store, but other cities have them and they offer more items. If they offer coupon specials you need to read the fine print....many times they limit you one per customer and sometimes a minimum purchase amount. Their return policy with receipt has no hassle whenever I've had to return anything. Sometimes, due to stocking new items arriving....they have products everywhere and many times it's hard to get around with a cart. The store offers good prices and large variety of products and brands to choose from. I would recommend this store for your shopping needs. read more

It tries to fit into a little niche between warehouse megastores, discount food stores, chain drugstores, liquor stores and party stores. It Fails. -You are better off going to Costco for a greater selection (plus hot dogs!). -Better to go to Party City for party supplies -FoodMaxx has more food at cheaper prices -TJs has much better variety of desirable food -Target has a wider selection of everything -Bed, Bath and Beyond has better kitchenware -BevMo has 100 times more booze If you want Italian Soda mix, they do have it here pretty cheap. Never been to a Smart & Final (SF), but heard about it thru word of mouth. Always remembered it as being exclusive to members back in the 90's, but that's no longer the case. Asking a SF employee about membership was like a caveman coming out of hibernation. Times has changed. Age is just a number. Walking thru each of the aisles, I've found the place to pass in the bargains in bulk. Savings were found on items substantially here and there. Others, not so much. On this visit I've found good buys on wine as well as hard liquor. Also, seen a customer checking out with a ridiculously giant drum of ice cream. It's a one stop party source for sure. What makes the business format great is its convenience. Getting in and out of there is effortless. Everything is organized for an intuitive experience. read more

My first Smart & Final experience was the now defunct store on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley. The Pleasant Hill facility is close by, so Gayle and I use primarily to help cater small work or family related events. I guess that makes us an occasional part of the small restaurant trade of which Smart and Final appears to serve. This Smart & Final has wide aisles, easy checkout, and best of all no Costco-related traffic jams or crowds. They have everything a regular grocery has plus some party and restaurant supplies. It's about twice the size of your regular TJ's and a lot less crowded. The ambiance is more on the Costco side of things. The floors are cement and the signs are basic. I did notice a few items in the cooking supplies that I wouldn't expect at a typical grocery store, maybe add a touch of restaurant supply too. If you don't need a ton of selection, Smart & Final will be fine. They have everything you need and it may be faster to get in and out in the small store. read more
