My wife and I stumbled into this cookie shop a few years back. Gourmet cookies, $1 apiece. Not too bad, but we were in a hurry so didn't pay too much attention. But tonight after we mistook our movie time and had 30 minutes to spare, we sauntered in again and gave a good look at the menu and the place. Tickled to see they are still in business, along with Pier 49 Pizza, while the tenants of the other nearby shops have come and gone. That says something about their quality and value to still be around years later. There was a young baker in the back, patiently rolling out dough and cutting out sugar cookies and popping them in the oven. And there were two others, one arranging freshly baked cookies onto the display shelving (older ones go to the back of the tray so they'll be pulled first, while fresher ones get put up front), and one to take our order. Very friendly. Oddly, I don't recall the shop smelling like fresh cookies, which is -- as most any child and realtor agent knows -- the most wonderful smell in the world. I'll have to go back a few more times to be sure my smeller is still working ;-) There were a few varieties that were sold out, but we found the selection to be adequate. I'm not a big fan of any icing thicker than a human hair, so I stayed away from the stacked sugar cookies, but the milk chocolate chunk and walnut, and the dark chocolate and white chip cookies really got the taste buds going. The $3.50 made-before-your-eyes ice cream sandwich between two cookies of your choosing was calling, but then I asked about their shakes. They make their shakes from hard ice-cream! WA-HOOOOO! They don't make it out of that nasty, liquid-based soft serve junk. They have a selection of Dreyers hard ice cream there and the shakes are made from that. You can make your own cookies and cream shake there for $3.50 as well. But instead of the traditional oreo in vanilla, you can add any of their fresh cookies to any of the ice cream flavors they carry. This is the only other place in Utah Country that I know of, besides the BYU Creamery, where you can get shakes made from hard ice cream. This alone has made me a fan and likely to accidentally find myself going out of my way during the commute home to sample more of the possibilities. Only downside I've found so far is there are only about 8 seats in the shop. On the other hand, it doesn't take too long to eat cookies, so if someone is occupying the seats, they'll probably be on their way shortly. Of course, if it's fair weather, there is plenty of outdoor seating between the movie theater and the cookie shop, which we took advantage of tonight. read more

I'm a bit of a cookie snob, so every time we head to Utah, I scope out a new bakery to try. This time we were in American Fork for a wedding, so we decided to try Smart Cookie. First of all, the cookies were pretty overpriced. I had read good things about Smart Cookie, so we forked out the money for 8 cookies. We got a mix of frosted and unfrosted (which are cheaper). The vanilla cookies were my favorite. The frosting is very good, but the cookies are nearly raw in the middle. I like my cookies to be baked all the way through, so I couldn't stomach the middle of the cookie. The lemon cookie was very similar. It seems like they underbake the cookies so they will remain soft. The red velvet, on the other hand, was rock hard. We only ate a few bites of that one. Again, the frosting was very good, but it all had a similar theme. I believe they are cream cheese based frostings. The unfrosted cookies were wholly unremarkable. We ordered one mint fudge, and it tainted the rest of the cookies. Everything had a mint taste. The toffee tasted like plain chocolate chip, and we couldn't find any peanut butter flavor in the peanut butter chocolate. We were pretty unimpressed with the unfrosted cookies. Smart Cookie was decent, but not worth the money. We've had better elsewhere in Utah, so we won't be back. read more

Whenever were in the American Fork area, my wife makes me take her here. The atmosphere is very inviting and the cookies are amazing. Sadly, their prices have gone up a little bit recently and they pass it on to the customer but that doesn't stop us from going. Hint: get the snicker doodles! read more

I've been going to Smart Cookie for years and have always had a good experience going there. Unfortunately, last night I had a very bad one and won't be going back for my favorite cookies again. My daughter and I walked in just before 9pm to get some cookies to go, upon walking in I noticed that they only had a few more sugar cookies left, and not of the flavors I wanted, so I asked the girl working if they had anymore in the back, and she was very confused by this question and was telling me the flavor of cookies that were right in front of me, so I just ordered 8 of the non frosted cookies. I did understand that it was later in the day, and that they sell out of certain flavors, but sometimes I've been there and was able to purchase cookies that weren't on display at that time. I told her which flavors I would like and I noticed she was picking up each cookie with her bare hands, I then asked her if she wasn't wearing gloves, and she said with a deer in the headlights look, uhhhh no, while wiping the cookie crumbs off her hand away, didn't offer to put them on, so I told her that she should of been wearing gloves, and that I don't want the cookies. So I left... I really don't feel like she was being nasty, but I do feel like she wasn't properly trained on how to handle ready to eat products, and that she was a bit confused by simple questions. I gave 2 stars because I do know that they made amazing cookies, but I can't eat a cookie that was touched by a strangers bare hands. Eww. read more

After all the hype about this place is think I got my expectations too high. My sister and I love sugar cookies and had to try theres. It was thin and simple. Wasn't anything special. They did though have this lemon cookie that was pretty good. The only advice I would say is to make the cookies softer. Again its my opinion, they obviously are doing something right. read more

While I'll admit I pretty much don't care about the non sugar cookies, the sugar cookies in all flavors are to die for amazing. Perfectly fluffy, chewy, light, but dense. Really delicious cookies with a variety of flavors available. We got ice cream cookie sandwiches and highly recommend them. We also got some frosted cookies to bring home to the kids. They needed more seating available indoors though. There was one bar with 5-6 seats and then one table, which was already occupied. We went and ate outdoors. Love that they are open late on weekends when everything else seems to close at 9 in Utah county! We will definitely be back. read more

The Smart Cookie Company is awesome. I visited this dessert heaven while on a business trip to Salt Lake City. From a friend's recommendation, I drove down to this store to try its baked goods. Instead I was surprised to find that the Smart Cookie Company is not your typical bakery. They offer a unique dessert that combines cookies and ice cream. I got to choose two different cookies (many flavors to choose from, size was generous) and an ice cream flavor. The ice cream cookie sandwich was huge. I have been a frequent visitor of the Provo store but now that they have an American Fork store, it's much closer to home and so I hit that more often. Thoughts: 1. The Staff. Awesome. I've only ever seen hot girls at both stores. Very friendly. Very fun. 2. The Store. Love the decor. Warm. Cool pictures of smart people like Einstein and others that go with the whole theme of the store. Very nice. 3. The Food. I'm telling you. If you haven't been, you just need to go. Just go. Schedule a date night with your wife or girlfriend THIS WEEK. For me, there are really only three things on the menu. I've had everything. First thing you MUST try is the Ice Cream Cookie Shake made with a Frosted Sugar Cookie. It will blow your mind. Almost every other shake you've ever tasted will pale in comparison. No joke. And ask for it just that way, because I don't think it's 'officially' on the menu board. Second is the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich. My fav is made with two milk chocolate toffee cookies and a scoop of cookies 'n cream ice cream. My "alternate" that I only occasionally order is with two snickerdoodles and a scoop of cinnamon ice cream. YUM. Third. I don't even know what to put for third. There are like six other things that tie for third place. Italian Soda's are fabulous. Blackberry is my personal fav. Love the frozen hot chocolates, but I think they only do those in the winter. Just went in to buy 3 dozen sugar cookies and was told they could not sell me that many. They said because they had to have cookies left in case another customer came in and wanted some I could only buy 2 dozen. That's great business right there!!
