I have an LG dishwasher that needed repair. I called Smart Step Repairs because they are local, have mostly great reviews and their website claims: "Our company offers shockingly low rates for speedy, high-quality service." I will say that the technician came out promptly, was professional and quickly identified a problem. It took a few days to order the part but the repair was done professionally and quickly (less than 30 minutes). However, I found their prices to be quite high. Almost $500 to replace a gasket. Also, the payment was requested to be made to ABV Systems and the receipt address indicates Brooklyn, NY, not local as advertised. Original POST - I had a terrible experience with Smart Steps Appliances. They came to fix my broken fridge, but the guy said I needed to add refrigerant which would cost me about $800. But he was not sure it would fix the problem. OK spending that much to get a "chance of fix"? Then I asked what if it does not fix it? "Well, if it works for more than 24 hours no refund" was the answer. Just out of curiosity, I asked how much to repair if it was a bad compressor, and he said it would cost $3300+ to replace it. Hello? Do you know what a brand-new fridge would cost? Smart Steps Appliances is a scam, and I don't recommend them to anyone. UPDATE on 5/26: The owner took the initiative and contacted me. He offered ways to rectify the situation. This is a positive sign the company is willing to own its responsibilities. I am updating my review to 3 stars for now. 2nd UPDATE on 5/30: The owner Alex came today in person. And he vacuumed and refilled the refrigerant in the fridge. He also explained the pricing and why the fix is on a "best-estimate" basis. He looks very professional and proficient. My stove downdraft fan will not come up so I called Smart Step Repairs. Alexey is an incredibly knowledgeable young man and he is a perfectionist who will not give up! It took several tests and multiple tries plus cleaning of build up grease, took over an hour & he never gave up and he got my downdraft working!!!!! My fridge stopped working so I called Smart Step Repairs. When I called, I was able to get an appointment within a day of my call. On the day of the appointment ANDREW was the service technician and he arrived on time and was very professional. Andrew explained to me his service call process and was able to diagnose the problem quickly and communicated what was needed to repair explaining that it would be more cost effective and reliable to repair it versus buying a new fridge eventhough my fridge was already 20 years old but had no problems until now. He was efficient, kept a clean work area and responded quickly to my text messages when I had questions. I also appreciated the fact that he would text me before he was on his way. Response was quick. They tried to fix my fridge and even though they weren't able to and came out twice, they only charged the service fee.

I chose Smart Step Repairs based on the number and level of reviews. They came to diagnose our oven that stopped working, no power. They had quoted us $600 for a control board and labor. This oven had broke previously and the previous solution was a $50 fuse. Before scheduling the expensive service I replaced the fuse myself and the oven works perfectly. I've not experienced a repairman lie to me before therefore the one star review and cautionary story. read more

We really liked these guys at first, and had used them for several fixes in both of our properties in Northern Virginia. They did a great job, the service technician was highly professional and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, our most recent fix went bad immediately after installation. It was a stove top that needed to be replaced, but in the subsequent days we noticed the connector pieces in the back started sparking. The timing is uncanny, and it's pretty clear that it was either faulty installation or a problem with the part itself causing the issue. Smart step wouldn't stand by their work and come back to fix. We also couldn't get a return call in over six months in order to get the warranty information on the part purchased from GE. I called upwards of 20 different times and was told I would get a call back, but never did. We ended up having to go with someone else. read more

Our oven wasn't heating properly. Then technician was knowledgeable about our unit and diagnosed the problem quickly. Smart step guy was able to get the two parts needed in under 48 hours, and our oven was repaired the following day. The price was very reasonable, and the service was best in class. So, I called this repair service again because it had previously provided outstanding response time and a durable fix when the washer failed and these more traditional services also could not respond within a reasonably short time. Our 16 year old SubZero fridge had a loose handle and slanting shelf. Alex came the next day and fixed the shelf and identified the tiny screw, which was needed to fix the door handle. He ordered the screw, called to let us know when they'd be over to fix the door. When he came he was missing the exact tool key he needed to install it, went to Home Depot to get one and came back 3 hours later and fixed the door. When our refrigerator started acting up, I found Smart Step Repairs via a Yelp request for bid to three companies, including Smart Step Repairs. They responded quickest and had a reasonable $85 fee for a technician to diagnose the problem, which was then applicable to the repair. In our case, the replacement part was backordered, which added delays outside of Smart Step Repair's control, but once they were able to re-order the part on a Monday, they received delivery on Tuesday, and came to fix our refrigerator on Wednesday. read more
