I like this place a lot. The people there are work very hard to keep out a lot of good hot food. The place is clean for how many people they are serving in a day. Hello fellow restaurant-goers, I am leaving a review for Smiley's Cafe due to my outright dismay at the standards I witnessed there. If you love Smiley's Cafe- this review isn't for you. However, if you have a penchant for delicious food, quality service, and nice restaurant surroundings - don't ignore what I'm about to list. Smiley's is a buffet. The one time I went there, on November 15th, 2023, some of my food was lukewarm. If the food is lukewarm in the serving basins; it isn't food safe. And no, I didn't wait for my food to get cold. Secondly, the food doesn't taste 'right.' At least not the soup that I tasted. It tasted more than 'off.' Also, the water that I was served had a dirty film floating on top. I didn't drink it. When my boyfriend and I entered the Smiley's Cafe unit in the mall- none of the tables were clean. If I recall correctly, there were no other customers there. We were assigned a table that I wouldn't have chosen. Because the staff member chose that one to clean. As I was sitting down at the table, I pulled out the chair next to me to set down my stuff. The chair had a huge chunk missing-- ripped open. If I were the restaurant owner/manager, I would have that chair replaced! After getting my food ..I looked up from my chair.. and in the corner of the restaurant; there was a huge spider web-- CAKED with dust. Horrified, I thought to leave- but since I already had my food; I decided to give the place the Genevieve Parry, (or Gordon Ramsay-style,) treatment. After I left, I felt dirty and gross on the inside. Wouldn't recommend, and honestly would vote to have the place shut down. It makes Alamogordo, NM. look like a joke. I already put in a tip to the State of New Mexico's Food Safety Program. I went back in to Smiley's on the 8th of December and took a photo of the spider web- which I've included for my review. Thanks for reading. P.S. My boyfriend wrote this: "There were what appeared to be food stains and small bits of dried food stuck to the wall next to our table, and they looked like they had been there for a while." He also mentioned to me that he got lukewarm food, and another dish with soggy breading. Food in buffet tables should be kept at a temperature of 140°F or above. Arguably the worst Chinese food I've had. Buffet style, it's cheap, and definitely not worth it in my opinion.

The ambiance is not for everybody. It's in the White Sands Mall, but the food is a delicious buffet for a reasonable price. We love to get a bit of everything till our plates are full. Nasty loud rude woman working here embarrassed me worse than I have ever been embarrassed in a restaurant. Very small selection of food. Watch because if you go back for another plate, there's a good chance they will take your dishes, your drinks (even your unopened bottled water) and chop sticks. I can see this happening once but three times? I ate here in spite of previous short comings but the rude woman and getting sick (runs) was the final straw. I have eaten at smileys several times yesterday Sunday February 4th was the worst experience ever. The food was ice cold.and soggy. The only thing that was hot that was the egg drop soup. I did tell the gentleman behind the counter that the food was very cold he checked the steam table and said "it's on". Paid $35 for food that was uneatable. We will not return. read more

I'm not sure how this place has been open so long. Every time we eat here I get sick. I'll go to Juan's across the way instead. Im really not sure what my husband sees in this place other than there are no other Chinese buffets. I've given them several tries but I'm not going back again. Love it but today was different food is great and so is the service except today something happen that I think needs to be changed. We have been going there for years we usually pay $24 including drinks to eat there for two of us which I think is great. But today they charged $27 which i dont mind its still a great price for 2 of us but when I questioned it she said because we are eating seafood. The menu at the entrance says $8.99 buffet and by saying that I figured a buffet is everything that is on displayed because never had they said otherwise. Anyway its a great place, food is great. Good lunch spot. Food tastes good and is priced right. Water has a slight aftertaste but is not unbearable. Buffet was mostly stocked and they take credit cards. Buffet has many of the standards including soups, egg rolls, chicken and beef entrees. Small dining area is somewhat tight but I think you can eat out in the mall area if you want to. read more

The best buffet in town! Only negative is the lack of beef options and it is in desperate need of updating. But all the chicken options taste amazing. This is a slightly-cramped all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet, set into a storefront in the mall and seating about 30. There are about two dozen entrees, and all the breaded items are cooked crispy, not soggy or greasy, and taste fresh. There are also about a dozen light desserts, including kid-friendly items like pineapple, watermelon, banana pudding, and Jello. The entrees are all Chinese items, with nothing American. Best Chinese food in Alamogordo! I love how friendly the wait staff are, they welcome you with a smile and positive attitude. The food was absolutely delicious and extremely fresh. I personally recommend the following dishes, sesame chicken, shrimp with coco sauce, orange chicken, mei fun noodles ( hope I spelled that right) , & low mein noodles. I really really don't understand when someone says the "old lady" is rude. I believe that sisters work/run this cafe and they have been nothing but polite. Yes, not a lot of talk, perhaps a language barrier - but they are very busy and work very hard. As for someone seeing meat left out...what???? One might see a cook in the kitchen shaking a stir fry pan but other than that I have a hard time believing that you can see meat sitting out on a counter as there is a fairly small (doorway) area to even see in the kitchen. The rice has been good every time we have been there (various times from early to just bf close time). Vegetables are always good. Food is not bad but is very greasy. Old lady that works there LACKS tact and common courtesy towards customers. Last time we visited, she was yelling at a cook. Should be conducted behind closed doors so as not to make customers feel uncomfortable. This visit, we ordered a To Go Box with 3 items. The old lady complained that we put too much in our To Go Box. Wow....really...there was hardly any food left in the dish I selected. The fried rice was hard on top from sitting too long under the heat lamps. I love this place. I've been on the fence about Chinese buffet but this place really came through the last time I drove through Alamo. It was my second visit and the first was just as good, but I think I was more hungry this time. We stopped. I loaded my plate with cheese wontons, sweet and sour chicken, lo mein and fried rice. And I pigged out. I went back for seconds. And thirds. It's really quite good for Chinese buffet in a mall that is a relicit of the 1980s. But if this was a town I lived in, I'd be here a lot more to pig out on the food. I highly recommend this. Don't be turned off by the mall or the fact that it's not the most happening place in town. Smiley's is in the mall. It's clean but a little crowded. They have extra seating in the mall promenade. The chairs shriek when you slide them. Entry is a little odd: you pay, they hand you your drink, then they abandon you. Tonight, they seemed to be yelling at each other. You find your own table or go directly to buffet carts. They have two buffet carts and a dessert table. The wait staff was very attentive to the buffets' selections. Both waitresses were observant and very efficient and kept my drink filled. The entrees looked great. There was a rather large variety. Beef; several pork dishes; sesame, teriyaki, orange, and other chicken dishes; two shrimp dishes; several verbal vegetable dishes; two or three kinds of noodles; fried and steamed rice; egg rolls and wontons; and hot and sour and egg drop soups.
